TCB Debriefing 5/19-6/1: Hacks/Hannah Einbinder, JFL, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Fantasmas, Ali Clayton, Ali Siddiq, Clare O’Kane, Paul Scheer/June Diane Raphael, Am I OK?, Make Some Noise, Ren Faire, Jenny Zigrino, The Undervale, Steph Curry, Aubrey Plaza/Joe Wengert, Laid, Steve Carell

1. Well, everything is coming up Hacks (and, by extension, Hannah Einbinder). Coming hot off the heels of a blisteringly hot 3rd season, Hacks, has been renewed for a fourth season (Zaslav allowed a good creative decision to happen?). On top of that, Hannah Einbinder’s very first comedy special, Everything Must Go, just released its first special and set the premiere date of Jun. 13th on Max. Taped live at LA’s El Rey Theatre, it truly was something marvelous, especially as a goddamn debut special (the ingenuity, poise, and sharpness would make one believe this is far past her first hour special). Take a gander with the trailer for Hannah Einbinder: Everything Must Go here.

2. Just For Laughs indeed has filed for bankruptcy protections in Canada as they were operating with millions of dollar of debt to their name. They have begun the sale of select assets to ensure they stay afloat, which still sounds uncertain (THR).

3. Maybe you didn’t get to see Everything Everywhere All at Once in theaters (or at all for some ungodly reason), but thankfully, you’ll have a chance to see the Oscar Best Picture Winner in IMAX come August (Indiewire).

4. While Los Espookys is long gone, Julio Torres is finally on the track he should be on with nothing but accolades for Problemista and more magically real, beautifully funny absurdity with his HBO series, Fantasmas. Take a gander at what he has up his ethereal sleeves with the trailer here, then look out for it’s premiere on HBO/Max come next week on Jun. 7th.

5. Ali Clayton has arrived. She has done so in quite the fashion too with her debut album, Country Queer, that dives deep into discovering herself and her queer identity being from the South. Clayton’s drawl, warmth contrasted with her candor and vividly colorful writing is one of the best ways to kick off Pride this June. Please enjoy and listen to Country Queer now, fresh off the presses from Blonde Medicine here.

6. It’s a rare feat to tell a story over the course of an hour and it be so thoroughly engaging that it makes for a captivating special, especially when it’s a hilarious take on your journey through the criminal justice system here in the U.S. of A. Ali Siddiq has not only achieved said feat, but done a hat trick with part 3 of Domino Effect, which might be the first legit comedy special trilogy that is narratively tied altogether. Siddiq’s poise and uncanny ability to find the comedy gold in his time going to prison are so solid that you kind of don’t notice the special is almost 90 minutes long. Please enjoy Domino Effect Part 3: First Day of School, now on YouTube, here.

7. Clare O’Kane is yet another shining example of someone who did write at SNL and has yet to show off their true potential in comedy (Tim Robinson anyone?). Fresh off Eugene Mirman‘s Pretty Good Friends Records, Clare’s sophomore album, Everything I know how to do, maintains a delightfully bubbly spirit while wading into the deep end of many personal anecdotes about polyamory, pansexuality, rejected SNL sketch pitches, sharp feet, and more often with Clare’s ironically silly flourishes. You can and should listen to Everything I know how to do here.

8. Paul Scheer and June Diane Raphael are taking the next step in their ascent as a comedy power couple by co-hosting an awards show, The Humanitas Prizes, this year in September (Variety).

9. Speaking of comedy power couples, Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne are co-directing their first feature together, Am I OK?, that seems like it’s probably taking a lot of cues from early on in their relationship with a sort of lost Dakota Johnson finding that she might be into women after having nothing but misfires in dating men. See how close they come to real life with the trailer here, then look for it on Max come Jun. 6th.

10. Dropout might have gameshows better figured out than GSN as you can see with the season 3 trailer of Make Some Noise. This game show in particular has such a beautifully simple game, but gets many of the world’s very best improvisers to twist and contort the show into some Dropout magic.

11. Ren Faire, a doc coming to HBO seems like King of Kong, but for one particular Ren Faire in Texas. See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for it on HBO/Max come this Sunday, June 2nd.

12. A good amount of the country will have a chance to see the amazing Jenny Zigrino live coming up and a good amount of the country should not miss out.

13. CBS’ Ghosts will have some competition at Netflix with The Undervale (not to mention that it will have the guiding hand of Dan Harmon as a producer) (Variety).

14. Let’s see if Steph Curry can best LeBron and Space Jam: A New Legacy with GOAT, Steph’s animated sports comedy feature (THR).

15. There’s more animated comedy worth keeping track with an animated series order for Joe Wengert and Aubrey Plaza‘s Kevin that follows a cat that wants to not live with humans anymore (THR). Not sure whether Joe or Aubrey (or someone else) would voice the cat, but either of them would be the perfect voice for an wonderfully anti-human cat.

16. The Stephanie Hsu comedy Laid that follows the mystery of formers lovers all strangely dying has gotten a stacked supporting cast now featuring John Early, Chloe Fineman, David Denman, and Andre Hyland (Deadline).

17.. Steve Carrell will be returning to a comedy series that ISN’T the revival of The Office, but, instead, takes him to a college campus with the producing hands of Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses (Deadline).

18. We’ll leave you with this: Sorry for taking so long. Turns out that running a theater while running a bureau is a lot of work.

1. Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, the Rob Reiner documentary tribute to his dear friend and certified comedy genius, Albert Brooks, is truly illuminating and a sensational reminder of how absolutely, devastatingly funny and original Brooks was. As far as alternative comedy goes, you could draw a line from Ernie Kovacs to Albert Brooks to almost anything off-beat done on stage today and this doc makes emphatically sure that you know that and will never forget it. Required viewing for anyone into comedy or even likes laughing, even just a little bit. Albert Brooks: Defending My Life is streaming now on Max.

2. Speaking of “defending my life”, Hasan Minhaj just added a bunch of dates for his Off With His Head tour. Get your tix at hasanminhaj.com.

3. Tig Notaro was in peak Tig form on Colbert. Please enjoy.

4. We were watching this Don’t Tell set from Malik Elassal and noticed that YouTube has tacked on a Wikipedia embed for the page about how the Flat Earth is a scientifically disproven conception based off of the title of the video “Woke Flat Earthers”. We have no doubt comedians will figure a way to twist this new move to some hysterical result (and perhaps go overboard with it in the process).

5. We’ll leave you with this: Can we not do a bunch of bits about saying “happy holidays” this year? There are plenty of actual wars going on versus the fake “War on Christmas”.

1. The newly minted version of @midnight, which will be called After Midnight, will be hosted by Taylor Tomlinson and have Jo Firestone as the head writer and Jack Martin from the actual @midnight as showrunner (THR). Aside from the Jimmys, Stephen, Seth, and John, After Midnight will be the representation for diversity in late night whenever SNL is not on the air (or if/when The Daily Show picks a replacement, presuming they don’t go with an old white guy).

2. Like his HBO series How To with John Wilson, John Wilson is pure human magic on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

3. Jenny Zigrino is a stand-up comedy force to be reckoned with. Go reckon with her on her winter tour all over the U.S. Get tix now at jennyzigrino.com/live.

4. If you didn’t have the coin to catch Mike Birbiglia on Broadway (because you probably never had the coin to catch anything on Broadway), fret not. His latest Broadway show, The Old Man & The Pool, is coming out in Netflix special form on Nov. 21st and you can take your first look at it here.

5. Oh, HBO. How the mighty have fallen and resorted to spam Twitter accounts to troll reviewers (THR). The question now is whether Showtime, Hulu, Roku, or someone else will do a slapdash drama about this revelation.

6. We’ll leave you with this: Anyone looking to open up a bar, please do it right next door to any and all comedy venues, for the love of whatever you believe in.

1. Even those comedy purists that are self-appointed guardians of the label “comedy legend” cannot deny the legendary status of one Albert Brooks. Thus, a documentary on the groundbreaking comedy visionary is more than called for and thank goodness it’s coming in the form of Albert Brooks: Defending My Life from director/friend Robert Reiner. Take your first gander with the trailer here, then look for it on HBO/Max on Sat. Nov. 11th.

2. Have no idea when the next season of I Think You Should Leave is going to come out? Fear not as Joe Kwaczala’s Funny Songs & Sketches can (and very much should) be your fix for carefully honed and precisely engineered tomfoolery. Kwaczala really lets his imagination run wild on a sonic canvas and that includes the “perfect” country song, hyper specific, very personal commercials, and even a behind-the-scenes sound byte of the “best” actor of all time. With that said, please enjoy Funny Songs & Sketches on repeat wherever you get your comedy albums.

3. Ava Pickett, writer on The Great, is moving from historical dark comedy in Russia to England in the 10th century. Sky Studios is indeed developing her medieval comedy series, Welcome to England (Deadline). To get in the mood, maybe binge through the first season of Blackadder.

4. Thanks to an interim strike waiver, a dark comedy starring the likes of Michael Shannon, Judy Greer, Eva Longoria, and Luis Guzman just wrapped under the helm and pen of Courtney J. Camerota (Deadline). Called Dead Guy, the movie will, of course, follow a dead guy, specifically one that just died, being passed around by neighbors who don’t want to be associated whatsoever with his death. An inverse on the premise of Weekend at Bernie’s? We’re game for that.

5. We’ll leave you with this: As anti-comedy actually still is comedy, does any other art form accept attempts at its antithesis?

4. Your favorite new British dramedy might be right around the corner with Dreaming Whilst Black from Adjani Salmon. Take a full look with its first full length trailer here, then look for it on Paramount+ (yes, this is where Showtime Anytime was headed) starting tomorrow.

5. Several of the rumblings and rumors you’ve heard from former Tonight Show staff over the last several years were effectively confirmed following a personal apology from Jimmy Fallon himself in response to a damning article published in Rolling Stone. We’re guessing that there’s more to the story of the “freak accident” of how he broke his finger and had to have a huge cast on his hand while hosting for several weeks. If you’re not already listening to Strike Force Five, now is probably a good time to get into it.

6. Apologies for missing out on a debriefing yesterday. We’re putting on two shows this month, one of which is our 13th anniversary (it’s invite only, but let us know if you want to come!).

1. HBO has wisely ordered Sam Mendes & Armando Iannucci’s series, The Franchise, following the inner workings of making a super hero movie (Deadline). So, the pitch would be that one season of Entourage where Vinny plays Aquaman, but done well and for smart people?

2. While getting the green light in Saudi Arabia, Barbie will not screen in Kuwait and possibly not in Lebanon either (THR). Claims that it “promotes homosexuality” and “contradicts values of faith and morality” are being cited as well as “diminishing the importance of the family unit”. Well, that’s almost better marketing than the heaps of praise that Barbie has earned and will guarantee a long run in theaters, much longer than probably first projected.

3. Twisted Metal, the adaptation of the armageddon demolition derby/race video game of the same name on Peacock, sets a record for the streamer as their “most binged comedy premiere” (Deadline). That somehow edges out Poker Face?

4. A friendly reminder that the third season of Only Murders in the Building is now streaming on Hulu, complete with Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep.

5. There is a Soviet Era Kung Fu comedy called The Invisible Fight set to premiere at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland (Variety). From the sounds of the premise, it’s echoes The Last Samurai, but set with Chinese monks/Kung Fu masters and Soviets and done up as a comedy. Oh, Black Sabbath is playing in the background? Hopefully, this gets U.S. distribution.

6. Day 100 of the strike has come to pass and Bob Iger has mainly learned that he shouldn’t say realistic demands are “unrealistic”.

5. We’re only two weeks away from 100 days since the WGA went on strike. Seems like it’s going to go on a lot longer and Greg Gutfeld will get to pathetically keep calling himself the King of Late Night (on top of the AMPTP putting profit margins over sustainable livelihoods).

John Early Wonderfully Gives All Sides of Himself on “Now More Than Ever”

June 30, 2023
News
comedy special, hbo, john early, max, now more than ever

A comedian on the threshold of doing an hour special can take a look at the landscape of comedy today and very easily get the notion of doing something, anything different, since the majority of comedy specials are still predominantly comprised of a single person on stage talking for an hour in front of a full theater or club. Then, comedians like John Early opt to let their imagination run wild and give us a rollicking pastiche of all facets of themselves as Early did with Now More Than Ever.

On paper, there are several different levels to Early’s hour on Max (notably referenced as HBO Max in this special, which will be a fun deep cut reference the more time that passes). Early couches his genuine, painstakingly crafted stand-up as interstitials within a sort of rock-doc/concert film for his fictional band The Lemon Squares (though they’re pretty damn fun as a cover band). So, that’s technically two sides of Now More Than Ever.

Then, there’s the meta/mockumentary element where John has the sort of chaotic fun that he has done so long with his long time comedy collaborator, Kate Berlant, showing comedic discord behind the scenes with The Lemon Squares. On top of those three layers, there seems to be final topping of Early being satirically self-aware of himself, his material, the concept of a comedy special, etc. Early doesn’t recuse himself from “being part of the problem” when calling it out in jokes and takes a mischievous pleasure in shouting out his parents out in the crowd with a spotlight and dragging them at the same time. In some schools of comedy thought, there might be “too many hats on hats” here, but Early’s magnetism, shrewd observations, and impeccable Britney voice does really ties everything together.

Suffice it to say that there’s a lot that’s packed into Now More Than Ever, but it all meshes together in a dreamlike fashion, blurring between varying levels of verisimilitude of John, but resulting in a special that’s a hilariously delightful greeting card to waking up in the awkwardness-fueled, tech-obsessed, new-new lost generation of the 2020s. It might be the choice special to watch on July 4th weekend.

John Early: Now More Than Ever is now streaming on Max, formerly HBO Max.

Trailer for John Early’s First HBO Special “Now More Than Ever” Promises a Blend of Mockumentary and Stand-Up Special

May 15, 2023
News
hbo, john early, now more than ever, trailer

In just over a month, John Early‘s very first HBO hour special, Now More Than Ever, will debut. As we’ve said before, this is long overdue for Early who has given us years and years of outstanding stand-up, characters, and TV appearances, etc. etc.

True to form, Early is transcending the form of a traditional stand-up special, not unlike his longtime comedy partner, Kate Berlant, by blending his real life stand-up with a rock mockumentary special for the fictional(?) band The Lemon Squares for Now More Than Ever, all in front of a live audience. So, expects bits and bits within bits and bits about the bits within bits and general John Early comedic revelry for what looks to be one of the more fun specials of 2023.

Also, this appears to be a return to form for HBO doing atypical specials as they were doing right up until the pandemic started.

Get a look at it for yourself with this first official full trailer here, then look for it on HBO on Sat. Jun. 17th.

John Early’s Solo Debut Hour Special “Now More Than Ever” Set for Jun. 17th on HBO

April 10, 2023
News
hbo, john early, mockumentary, now more than ever

Given everything that the brilliant John Early has done in his comedy career, Would It Kill You to Laugh?/555/Search Party, the prospect of Early doing an hour special should be a thing of the past. Early is as deeply funny as he is a boundary pusher and has been doing so for several years (even in bit parts such as he’s wild role as a compulsive liar on I Think You Should Leave).

Yet, Early won’t have had a solo hour comedy special until this Summer (you could count his episodes of Netflix’s The Characters as his own special, but it’s only 35 minutes) per HBO’s announcement of one this morning. It’s refreshing and surprising to hear that it’s something that HBO is ordering up rather than trying to write off for tax purposes.

Per Early’s particularly off-beat/alt/meta sensibilities, the special entitled Now More Than Ever won’t just be John standing on stage going through great bits. Variety reports that it’ll be done in the style of a gritty ’70s rockumentary, which makes it a de facto mockumentary. There will be cover songs, but, as one might expect, there will be interstitials that, maybe, might feel like a comedy version of Daisy Jones and The Six (though we’re sure there are many more layers to it than just that).

It’s hard to say what exactly Early has up his sleeve for us, but the mystery of what John is going to do, whichever of the multitudes of himself he chooses to show up as, is all part of what has been so enthralling about his comedy all this time. That’s why you should set a reminder for Jun. 17th when Now More Than Ever is set to premiere on HBO.

This White House Plumbers Trailer Promises a Dramedy Miniseries of One of America’s Biggest Blunders

March 31, 2023
News
david mandel, hbo, justin theroux, nixon, trailer, watergate, white house plumbers, woody harrelson

The historic American debacle that has forever been known as “Watergate” (so infamous that it would be the go-to reference to name so many public scandals that followed it) has been and will very likely continue to be reenacted in TV and movies due to how truly incredulous and botched the whole affair was.

Thus, HBO, Veep’s David Mandel, Woody Harrelson, and Justin Theroux have assembled to do a mini-series, White House Plumbers, following E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy, the bad actors that were caught at the Watergate Hotel tampering on behalf of Nixon’s re-election campaign. It’s fitting that Mandel is at the helm here as there is plenty of Veep-style humor baked into Watergate as one can see in the trailer that dropped this week. White House Plumbers will very likely enter awards consideration as a dramatic mini-series, but probably much in the sam spirit that Succession is a drama.

Take a gander at the utter ridiculousness that spiraled into Watergate with this trailer for White House Plumbers here. Then, look for its premiere on HBO starting Mon. May 1st.

Marc Maron Shows the Beautiful Side of Dark Comedy in “From Bleak to Dark”

February 14, 2023
News
comedy special, hbo, marc maron

These days, the label of “dark comedy” often, and unfortunately, gets conflated with being an “edgelord”, a comedian wheeling and dealing in verbal schadenfreude, or someone mistaking the defense of free speech with ignoring the fact words can have consequences (and that’s almost never an infringement on their rights).

Any fan of Marc Maron can probably quote word-for-word their favorite bit or their favorite episode of WTF and illustrate that there is another side of the dark comedy spectrum that is dark simply because that’s the genuine, vulnerable reality that it explores (and often makes for some of the most hilarious, human jokes that reminds us that we’re not alone). Maron has operated in such a space for years, but he really puts this notion on display in his latest hour, the HBO special From Bleak to Dark.

Spanning from the very untimely and tragic death of his girlfriend, celebrated filmmaker Lynn Shelton, to more global concerns of the world more transparently falling into entropy, Maron paints his bits delicately with a muted, but sharply nuanced palate.

He’ll dream up faux solo shows that highlight the disturbing future ahead instead of just making the observation of not knowing what to do according to the climate-change-action-gospel of Greta Thunberg or do an extended act out that acutely illustrates the problem with The Joe Rogan Experience and its legion of listeners rather than roasting Joe in a more traditional fashion. Rather than just simply describing what’s wrong with the world in a Seinfeld-ian mode of “What’s the deal with…?” or decrying these times in his advanced age with “Back in my day…”, Maron jovially revels in the existential nature of the present. “I don’t want to be negative, but I don’t think anything is going to get better ever again,” is how From Bleak to Dark opens and, in these times, that feels almost a comforting thing to hear in that we’re not alone in this feeling that lives somewhere in the title of the special.

There are several heavy passages/set-ups that really come from Maron’s penchant for being as vulnerable as he can be, even exploring the idea of him even being able to be funny after Shelton’s passing. The payoffs are all worth it as you can see here in Maron’s story of his first joke he came up while grieving Lynn’s death. It’s a beautifully sad story with a great punchline, which, arguably, could be a tagline for life itself (at least in Maron’s darkly humorous vision of it).

When watching this hour, one might take note of the gorgeous multi-colored cloud filled backdrop, very atypical of a stand-up comedy special from any era. Director Steven Feinartz told us that the backdrop was actually inspired by a conversation between Lynn and Marc about their love of Pacific Northwestern sky. The sheer contrast of Marc’s post-modern gallows humor (ex. his insistence about someone having a tight 5 in a place such as Auschwitz) and the billowy flourishes of color is emblematic of finding the humor in the darkness and, in a more zoomed out perspective, the joy when there seems to be nothing else but despair.

Marc Maron: From Bleak to Dark is streaming now on HBO Max.

Looks Like Marc Maron Is Going to Show Exactly How to Do Dark Comedy These Days in Upcoming “From Bleak to Dark”

January 25, 2023
News
comedy special, from bleak to dark, hbo, marc maron, stand up comedy, trailer

No matter which phase of Marc Maron’s career one may look at, there is an unmistakable tangle of dark comedy threads throughout his work. Of course, it comes from his candor, which was much more political in his earlier years, then got intensely personal over the last decade and half or so. In either case, Maron has a preternatural feel for how to find the comedy gold in the darkness of the human experience as opposed to what a lot of “dark comics” do by simply trying to channel unfiltered shock in their material.

With how times have been going and are currently going as you read this, Maron might be one of the most crucial voices in comedy and this latest special From Bleak to Dark might be further proof of that fact. Set to come out HBO on Sat. Feb. 11th, we’ve heard excited whispers of this new hour that Maron has been largely working out a clubs, namely The Comedy Store, Largo, and Dynasty Typewriter here in LA.

The trailer for From Bleak to Dark, just released today, seems to very much validate said whispers and we can’t wait to watch it to get in the perfect mood for Valentine’s Day.

We’ll all be able to see for ourselves when From Bleak to Dark premieres on HBO on Sat. Feb. 11th.

New Other Two, Hacks, and How To with John Wilson, and More Coming in 2023/Are All Safe for Now at HBO Max

December 21, 2022
News
hbo, hbo max

Since the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, so many properties have gotten canceled (even if they had been previously renewed) including Minx, Love Life, Los Espookys, Made for Love, Gordita Chronicles, and even two Looney Tunes projects. That’s just counting the comedy productions at HBO Max that were nixed amongst several others that were taken off the platform.

A preview of HBO Max’s entire slate in the coming year was just posted today and, effectively, doubles as a notice as to what’s safe from Warner Discovery head David Zaslav’s ax. In this teaser, Barry, Righteous Gemstones, Somebody Somewhere, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, How To with John Wilson, Real Time with Bill Maher, A Black Lady Sketch Show, Rain Dogs, Velma, And Just Like That…, Julia, Doom Patrol, Our Flag Means Death, The Other Two, Rap Sh!t, Harley Quinn, and Hacks are going to premiere, come out with new seasons, etc.

That’s still a healthy offering on HBO Max’s side of things, but we won’t be surprised if things change up again quickly somewhere along the way in 2023 due to any number of circumstances (ratings, trying desperately to cut costs, etc.).

For now, just enjoy what will be on HBO Max in 2023 as shown here.

Atsuko Okatsuka’s The Intruder Is So Good That It Should Change Up Some Already Released Year End Lists

December 12, 2022
News
atsuko okatsuka, comedy special, hbo, stand up comedy, the intruder

It’s kind of a grand error by several publications that year end lists often get published in late November/early December (i.e. not the actual end of the year). As such, there is always something that’s worthy of mention that gets unjustly left off and, for 2022, that glaring omission might be Atsuko Okatsuka‘s first HBO special, The Intruder.

Atsuko has meticulously and carefully honed her entire comedy act and brand as well as her audience in a way that’s pretty undeniable. Her unstoppable charm and warmth combined with a thoroughly fresh and fascinating story (unknowingly getting moved to the U.S. from Japan as an undocumented immigrant and living as such for 7 years) and perspective (and a marvelous splash of style) have led her from being a beloved LA comedy staple to headlining across the country (and then there’s her Tik Tok fame). All of these qualities are dazzlingly on display in this HBO special, The Intruder, Atsuko’s most high profile work to date.

Atsuko exudes such great magnetism in this hour that it’s clear that she has been ready for this stage of her career for quite some time now. Her presence and command of the stage holds several narrative threads involving being undocumented and getting lost in pandemic hobbies, all stemming from the main one about a home intruder and how and her husband attempt to deal with him. In fact, there’s a hopefulness, a word rarely juxtaposed to stand-up comedy, to Atsuko’s observations and stories that might be a beacon of what stand-up comedy can (and maybe should) be (rather than re-hashings of what it has been since the 80s with updated references).

Undoubtedly, it’s one of 2022’s best specials and one can only hope that the new HBO keeps Atsuko around for more to come despite being on a cancelling spree.

Here’s Your First Look at Atsuko Okatsuka’s First HBO Hour Special “The Intruder”

Wherever Atsuko Okatsuka goes, she is a very joyful, very stylish breath of fresh air on top of being one of the funniest comedians taking the mic these days. Okatsuka is finally getting her due this year from being such a performer with the debut of a whole hour long HBO special entitled “The Intruder”.

At the risk of tipping off too much, especially if you haven’t seen Atsuko before, we will just say that her story of immigrating to America is one of the most fascinating ones we’ve heard in comedy (and, of course, so very timely). The journey, the self-styled vibrant aesthetic, the moves, and the carefully honed observations and stories of a former undocumented immigrant turned dancer turned comedian, as you’ll see, should leave an indelible mark on this year’s comedy special landscape.

See for yourself with this first look at Atsuko Okatsuka: The Intruder here, then look to stream it on HBO Max on Sun. Dec. 10th.

Get Ready for More Havoc from the Privileged with Season 2 Trailer of White Lotus

News

Though the upcoming season of White Lotus trades Hawaii for Sicily and an almost an entirely cast and a supposed focus, according to creator Mike White, more on male privilege as opposed to mainly the obscenely wealthy, it all looks just as satirically juicy as the critically acclaimed, beloved, award winning first season.

Having Aubrey Plaza, Michael Imperioli, and F. Murray Abraham next to a returning Jennifer Coolidge amidst a very enticing ensemble cast is frosting on the cake of the next chapter of the fictional White Lotus luxury resort franchise. Thank goodness that that the premiere date is only mere weeks away, specifically Sun. Oct. 30th on HBO/HBO Max.

Get a taste of the Italian flavor of chaos that’s to come on season 2 of The White Lotus with the first official trailer here.

Nathan Fielder Will Get a Chance to Outdo Himself Again as The Rehearsal Gets Second Season

August 19, 2022
News
hbo, nathan fielder, the rehearsal

Nathan Fielder took the Internet’s attention captive with four seasons of Nathan For You and his satirical, intentionally unwitting(?) attempts to improve real-life small businesses. While Fielder had a hand in How To with John Wilson, we’ve all been waiting a long time to see what Nathan had inevitably been working in secret on.

The Rehearsal on HBO was that very thing that we’ve been constantly refreshing any sort of social media feed to see any news about and it truly hasn’t disappointed. If anything, HBO gave Nathan a near infinite sandbox to play with in the concept of having people prepare for tough life situations via near identical rehearsals complete with fully immersive sets and trained actors. Fielder, of course, doesn’t leave the humor inherent in the premise to fuel the show, but, as always, goes deeper and follows the truth of whatever real people have gotten involved with Nathan’s comedy experiments. There is a great deal of Nathan having to adapt and deal with the direction of the show that’s actually part of the show and one might fervently ponder, even more than in Nathan For You, how much Nathan is in control and how deep his rabbit hole of “all-of-this-being-a-bit” vs. “it-being-real” goes.

The incredulity of it all might be the point rather than trying to figure out how much Nathan is in on everything. How else do you process, slight spoiler here, Nathan trying to “rehearse” as an actor of one of his “acting classes” that’s all set up to be the veritable theater group that he uses for the actual rehearsals for the show itself?

It might be Nathan’s most brilliant work to date and something that really highlights comedy truly as art.

Thank goodness that HBO is giving him a whole second season where Nathan will undoubtedly pull several rugs out from underneath us all yet again.

The Rehearsal is streaming now on HBO Max with the season finale airing tonight on HBO and streaming on HBO Max.

Get Your First Look at Los Espookys’ Season 2

July 29, 2022
News
ana fabrega, fred armisen, hbo, julio torres, los espookys, season 2

Long ago, in the Summer of 2019, Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega, and Fred Armisen unleashed the horror fantasy comedy series Los Espookys into the world. The mesh of all those genres were only starting to come into prominence (and What We Do in the Shadows definitely hadn’t gotten its due yet) and Los Espookys, especially with the original voices of Torres and Fabrega, was truly unlike anything that had been on television before.

The macabre has never been this trippy and funny and, on this side of the pandemic, it might be the perfect thing for Summer 2022. You can see for yourself in the first look at season 2 here, which is finally coming over 3 years after its series premiere.

Then, make a reminder on your phone for Fri. Sept. 16th when Los Espookys officially returns, exclusively on HBO.

Atsuko Okatsuka Set for Second Hour Special at HBO

The rise of Atsuko Okatsuka in LA to becoming a beloved nationally touring headliner/viral sensation has been a distinct pleasure over the years. Atsuko is, without one of the funniest comedians working right now, and such a delight to see on any and every stage, especially with her playful, yet sharply observed comedy and incredible story of how she got to where she is right now.

So, we’re thrilled to hear that the hour special to follow up her first one at Hulu will be at HBO and is set to tape this Fall. The prospect of the whole world (the part with access to HBO/HBO Max) getting to see Atsuko’s bits that we’ve doubled over laughing at dozens of times makes us pretty damn happy.

There are no details as to when/where the taping will be, but you absolutely should be there when it happens.

Here Are Your Latest Hints as to What Nathan Fielder Is Up to With ‘The Rehearsal’ (Trailer)

News
hbo, hbo max, nathan fielder, the rehearsal, trailer

With Nathan Fielder, like any actually good thriller, there’s always more to his bits/pranks/comedic performance art experiments than what is first presented. Talk of The Rehearsal has been swirling for what feels like years now and HBO just unveil the first official trailer of Fielder supposedly prepping people for real life situations via a painstakingly crafted “real world” rehearsal.

You’ll see Nathan deal with people that seem, like the good unsuspecting folks on Nathan For You, unlike any sort of performer or people connected to comedy in any way, shape, or form. Of course, Nathan has a penchant for setting up something where chaos is inevitable and then following with whatever happens and never breaking whatever his own personal “fourth wall” might be. Again, all enticing, but there absolutely has to be more underneath what is already a wild premise (though we’d expect nothing less from the mind behind Dumb Starbucks).

Thus far, this Rehearsal trailer promises the follow-up from Nathan Fielder that we’ve waited years plus the pandemic for and, thankfully, you’ll only have to wait until next Fri. Jul. 15th on HBO Max for it.

Take Your First Look at Nikki Glaser’s First HBO Special “Good Clean Filth”

News
comedy special, good clean filth, hbo, nikki glaser, stand up comedy

While Nikki Glaser has very much planted a solid foot in the world of reality TV with Welcome Home Nikki Glaser? and F Boy Island, she is still very much the razor sharp, endearingly and unapologetically blue stand-up comedian that worked her way up to where she is now.

Glaser is going to thankfully remind us all of that with her latest hour special, the first one for HBO, Good Clean Filth, where she looks to be more earnest about her life, especially when it comes to sex. From the trailer, it looks like the perfect follow-up to her Netflix hour, Bangin’, where she so sweetly got so hysterically dirty about the prurient parts of her life.

Take a gander at Nikki Glaser: Good Clean Filth for yourself here, then look for it on HBO on Jul. 16th at 10PM, then HBO Max shortly thereafter.

Meg Stalter Might Be Getting Her Very Own HBO Max Show “Church Girls”

(via THR)

Turns out that Meg Stalter’s turn as Kayla in HBO Max’s jewel original series, Hacks, stole so many scenes that HBO Max is giving her a pilot for her very own show.

Called Church Girls, this comedy pilot will be somewhat based off Stalter’s life as a closeted Ohio Christian girl, but undoubtedly have Stalter’s charming chaos woven all throughout it since she is co-writing it.

If you want to get a taste of what Meg does when given her own show, go and binge her wildly fun and demented podcast, Confronting Demons. We hope that sort of energy finds its way into Church Girls, then results in a series order so more of the world can marvel at one of the purest expressions of chaotic good in all of comedy.
