TCB Debriefing 9/7/23: Quiz Lady, Atsuko Okatsuka, Sam Jay, Dreaming Whilst Black, Fallon

News
atsuko okatsuka, dreaming whilst black, hbo, jimmy fallon, quiz lady, sam jay, tonight show

1. Awkwafina and Sandra Oh join forces for what could be a very, very fun buddy road comedy that vaguely echoes Little Miss Sunshine in Quiz Lady. Take a gander with the trailer here, then look out for it on Hulu starting Nov. 3rd.

2. The marvelous Atsuko Okatsuka is about to go back out on the road for her Full Grown Tour. So, you better go get your tickets ASAP before they sell out.

3. If you’ve been wondering what Sam Jay has been up to since it has been a minute since Pause with Sam Jay, you have your answer in the trailer for her brand new hour special, Salute Me or Shoot Me, the long awaited follow-up to 3 in the Morning. Look for it on Max starting Sept. 23rd.

4. Your favorite new British dramedy might be right around the corner with Dreaming Whilst Black from Adjani Salmon. Take a full look with its first full length trailer here, then look for it on Paramount+ (yes, this is where Showtime Anytime was headed) starting tomorrow.

5. Several of the rumblings and rumors you’ve heard from former Tonight Show staff over the last several years were effectively confirmed following a personal apology from Jimmy Fallon himself in response to a damning article published in Rolling Stone. We’re guessing that there’s more to the story of the “freak accident” of how he broke his finger and had to have a huge cast on his hand while hosting for several weeks. If you’re not already listening to Strike Force Five, now is probably a good time to get into it.

6. Apologies for missing out on a debriefing yesterday. We’re putting on two shows this month, one of which is our 13th anniversary (it’s invite only, but let us know if you want to come!).

TCB Debriefing 8/11/23: Asteroid City, BIPOC Late Night/Variety Writers Panel, Hulu Price, Quiz Lady, Jackie Chan

1. Wes Anderson‘s latest and greatest, Asteroid City, is now available digitally across several platforms. Hopefully, you have the home theater set up to make watch an Anderson’s exuberant masterpiece (read our thoughts here). If you indeed do, and are dressed in proper Wes Anderson-esque attire for the occasion, go buy the film here.

2. The Wrap brought together an esteemed BIPOC late night and variety writers panel (Tim Barnes, Greg Iwinski, John Thibodeaux, Celeste Yim, Naima Pearce),  to talk about where they’re at past 100 days of the WGA Strike and reiterate the very reasonable demands that they’re fighting for.

3. Starting Oct. 12th, Hulu will be pretty much $18 instead of pretty much $15 (USA Today) if you don’t want ads. Fingers crossed that the new season of Futurama preemptively did a joke about this.

4. Despite the buzz and glitz of the Toronto International Film Festival being in jeopardy because of the strikes, buddy road/quiz show comedy Quiz Lady that pairs Awkwafina with Sandra Oh is still set to premiere at TIFF (Deadline). We can only promise of an Awkwafina and Sandra Oh two-hander is alluring enough to earn a release next year.

5. Anyone notice that international action comedy star/legend Jackie Chan has quietly return to the big screen? He’s a voice in the latest TMNT movie AND there’s a John Cena/Jackie Chan movie, Hidden Strike, that has snuck its way onto Netflix. For fans of 90s Jackie Chan movies, it might just be right up your alley.

6. If comedians ever tried to form a union again, you’d think artisanal chicken tenders as opposed to the paltry normal comedy club ones would be one of the demands?

TCB Debriefing 7/13/23: JFL Montreal, SAG-AFTRA Strike, Quiz Lady, Kill Rock Stars, WWDITS

July 13, 2023
News
awkwafina, jfl montreal, just for laughs, kill rock stars, papp johnson, quiz lady, sag-aftra, sandra oh, strike, what we do in the shadows

1. JFL Montreal 2023 line-up (minus New Faces of Comedy, of course)

2. SAG-AFTRA will go on strike just past midnight tonight, joining the WGA in their fight for a fair contract from the AMPTP. All union productions will cease that haven’t been shut down already, which includes plenty of comedies and film festivals and film premieres might as well have tumbleweeds roll down the red carpet until a new contract is agreed upon. This will absolutely affect comedies in production, coming up for release (no more fun Barbie press events), and potential upcoming projects (especially since SAG-AFTRA covers voiceover work as well). Get ready for a bunch of reality TV and game shows, even more than what is already being shoved down our collective throats.

3. Quiz Lady, a buddy road comedy starring Awkwafina and Sandra Oh, is set to premiere Nov. 3rd (Deadline) and hopefully both strikes will be over by then and the duo can have a fun late night appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

4. Famous punk record label, Kill Rock Stars, are relaunching their comedy division and starting off with an album release from Papp Johnson. Here’s a sneak peek here.

5. Just a friendly reminder that What We Do In the Shadows, one of the most enduringly funniest shows on TV, returns for season 5 tonight on FX and Hulu. It’s mandatory viewing as far as we’re concerned, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the Television Academy.

6. With both professional writers and actors going on strike, you better bet that stand-up comedy is going to even more crowded than it already is.
