TCB Debriefing 2/12-2/15/24: Bad Play, This Fool, Adam Sandler, Hannah Gadsby, Abbott Elementary, Caleb Hearon

February 16, 2024
News
abbott elementary, adam sandler, bad play, Caleb Hearon, hannah gadsby, kyle kinane, this fool, united theater

1. Big Tobacco, the sketch group and not the corporate beast, made one of the best satires/mash-ups of an art form we’ve ever seen with a wonderfully searing send up of prestige live theater, Bad Play. Round of applause to Brad Beidman, Brian Fitzgerald, Lyndsey Kempf, and Eli Lutsky and a thanks to them now that Bad Play is on YouTube for you to watch just in case you couldn’t make it to the Yard Theater or the Hollywood Fringe when it first made a big splash. Please enjoy Bad Play here.

2. Hulu makes an utterly stupid move by cancelling This Fool (THR) after two critically acclaimed seasons. So much for a full on Bear x This Fool crossover ep.

3. Adam Sandler’s next special will be directed by one of Josh Safdie, whom Sandler previously worked on in pulse pounding sports gambling thriller, Uncut Gems (Deadline). Perhaps, we’ll get an answer to what a handheld stand-up special would be like, especially with some sort of dire ticking clock at play.

4. While it has been a bit since a big time comedian (maybe just a couple of years?) has put their name on a stand-up comedy showcase to present their favorite comedians, we’re really glad to see Hannah Gadsby throw their hat in this ring with a showcase of gender redefining comedians including ALOK, Chloe Petts, DeAnne Smith, Ashley Ward, Jes Tom, Mx. Dahlia Belle, and Krishna Istha (i.e. some of the best stand-ups working today). It really is going to be grand Mar. 5th when Gender Agenda premieres. See for yourself with the first trailer here, then set a remind for Mar. 5th to watch this immediately.

5. Abbott Elementary, the latest torchbearer of the Christopher Guest lineage of mockumentaries and, perhaps, one of the most heartfelt, touching ones yet is renewed for season 4 just as season 3 premiered (Variety).

6. One of the very best in comedy these days, Kyle Kinane, (just go watch Shocks & Struts if you need a refresher) has slated his latest hour, Dirt Nap, for March 4th. You can pre-order it now and get your first peep of it right here.

7. Caleb Hearon is already a star, but is about to have his IMDB STARmeter get upped to where it’s supposed to be with him starring in Lily Wachowski’s upcoming dramedy, Trash Mountain (Variety).

8. We’ll leave you with this: While the Ace Hotel is going to close, the theater formerly known as The Theatre at the Ace Hotel will live on as The United Theater on Broadway (a nod to its past as The United Artists Theater). The big gala shows for Netflix Is a Joke Festival are safe.

Pick of the Day: A Very Big Wig Christmas with Caleb Hearon & Brian Robert Jones (in LA) 12/19

December 8, 2022
News
2220 arts and archives, big wig, brian robert jones, Caleb Hearon, comedy variety, echo park, historic filipino town, los angeles comedy

From opening a night with an audience member getting a flash tattoo to having fashion themes/assignments for all in attendance to both hosts Caleb Hearon and Brian Robert Jones being some of the most talented folks in all of LA, Big Wig has become, without a doubt, one of the best variety shows in all of the LA scene.

As both Caleb and Brian booked and blessed quite a lot, they haven’t gotten quite to keep up the pace of their show being monthly (or being necessarily in one place). So, you have to keep a watch for when and at what theater/warehouse they’ll be playing next.

Lucky for you, this holidays edition of Big Wig is happening Mon. Dec. 19th at 8PM at 2220 Arts & Archives (formerly The Bootleg Theater). They have yet to announce the line-up, but rest assured they will not let you down with LA comedy’s most hysterical performers from every corner of comedy and LA music’s most enthralling singer/songwriters/bands.

All that said, go get your tickets at $20 a pop right now right here.

Pick of the Day: Big Wig with Caleb Hearon and Brian Robert Jones (in LA) 8/24

News
beth stelling, brian robert jones, Caleb Hearon, dtla, illuminati hotties, los angeles comedy, Mae Martin, Sydnee Washington

Caleb Hearon and Brian Robert Jones have gotten more than a few months under their belts of putting on one of the hands down, most fun, truly expansive variety shows (they did a live tattoo on stage of a more than willing audience member on top of stand-up and a handful of beautiful music acts) with Big Wig.

This month, they’re really upping the ante in their new DTLA/Arts District secret location with an absolutely stellar comedy line-up of Beth Stelling, Sydnee Washington, and Mae Martin, but they’re also bringing Illuminati Hotties, a damn good punk band that really feels like it actually holds on to a punk ethos in a world increasingly devoid of it, to their stage

So, you’re never going to want to miss any sort of Big Wig, but you definitely want to make extra sure that you’re not going to miss this one on Wed. Aug. 24th at 9PM PT. Tickets are $17 and you better snag them here.

Pick of the Day: Lance Bangs Presents (in LA) 9/2

June 28, 2022
News
brandon wardell, Caleb Hearon, david gborie, elysian, fred armisen, girl god, ian karmel, la comedy, lance bangs, moses storm, natalie palamides, reggie watts, stand up comedy

If you Google “Lance Bangs”, you’ll first read that he’s an American Filmmaker. While that’s very true, Bangs is also a curator of the underground, seeking out those thrilling voices, often in and around comedy that you hope to bare witness to at a live comedy and/or music show. Having worked with the likes of Jackass to Tyler the Creator to Marc Maron to Nirvana to George Harrison to John Hodgman to his latest work on Moses Storm’s acclaimed HBO special, Trash White, Bangs is one of the most respected figures behind the scenes.

So, the fact that he’s curating a very special night of comedy at The Elysian come Fri. Sept. 2nd should be something you mark down on your calendar immediately, right after you immediately get tickets.

The line-up features some of the best folks he’s worked with that happen to be some of the best, most clever, most subversive, funny voices in comedy.

That includes:

  • Fred Armisen
  • Reggie Watts
  • Girl God
  • Natalie Palamides
  • Caleb Hearon
  • Moses Storm
  • Brandon Wardell
  • Ian Karmel
  • David Gborie

It’s such a stellar line-up and you can see all of that for only $20. Go get your tickets for Lance Bangs Presents @ The Elysian on 9/2 right here.

Caleb Hearon, comedy central, stand up comedy

The fact that Caleb Hearon doesn’t have any sort of album or special is borderline criminal. Hearon is one of the sharpest comics on stage these days and if you haven’t gone and seen him yet, that is also borderline criminal. Hearon has a polish and panache and a sensibility balanced between acerbic and aspirational. Again, go see him take the mic wherever you can, even if it’s out of your way.

For now, in this moment, you’ll have to settle with Hearon’s Comedy Central Featuring set that just dropped today. It’s just a taste of Hearon’s comedy stylings, but it’s a great one that has the story of being comedically skewered by a student of his (ironic considering Hearon’s own roasting skills in his youth)

Watch and see Caleb Hearon’s set here.

Pick of the Day: Padma Puts On a Virtual Comedy Show 12/17

December 15, 2020
News
amber ruffin, aparna nancherla, Ayo Edebiri, Benito Skinner, bowen yang, Caleb Hearon, chelsea peretti, dulce sloan, emily v gordon, fair fight, georgia runoffs, hasan minhaj, jo firestone, joel kim booster, john early, julio torres, kumail nanjiani, marie faustin, matt rogers, Meg Stalter, michelle buteau, mike birbiglia, mitra jouhari, naomi ekperigin, nikki glaser, padma lakshmi, patti harrison, patton oswalt, phoebe robinson, roy wood jr, sarah silverman, Sydnee Washington, tituss burgess, w kamau bell, wanda sykes

We told you that there would be plenty of big time comedy benefit shows for the Georgia Runoffs and, lordy lordy, there sure are. This latest one is being put up by the one and only Padma Lakshmi that’s very explicit in this regard by being called, “Padma Puts on a Virtual Comedy Show for the Georgia Runoff Elections: An Evening to Benefit FairFight”.

Stacey Abrams’ FairFight was instrumental in registering voters and contributing to Biden’s 2020 Election win and will undoubtedly be crucial in the upcoming special Georgia Senate Runoffs.

So, they tapped Padma for a live benefit show and she, in turn, got one hell of a line-up that includes:

Hasan Minhaj, Phoebe Robinson, Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Peretti, Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon, Benito Skinner, Mike Birbiglia, John Early, Roy Wood Jr., Julio Torres, Michelle Buteau, Patton Oswalt, Aparna Nancherla, Caleb Hearon, Wanda Sykes, Joel Kim Booster, Tituss Burgess, Meg Stalter, Patti Harrison, Nikki Glaser, Ayo Edebiri, Jo Firestone, Amber Ruffin, Dulce Sloan, Naomi Ekperigin, W. Kamau Bell, Mitra Jouhari, Sydnee Washington, Marie Faustin, and Andy Cohen.

There will also be music from King Princess, Perfume Genius, Waxahatchee, Brittany Howard, Local Natives, Aloe Blacc, and Cautious Clay.

Lastly, the evening’s virtual festivities will be hosted by none other than the Las Culturistas themselves, Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang.

Reads like a festival line-up, doesn’t it? Well, we still can’t do that in person right now, but you can enjoy this gigantic Padma Puts on a Virtual Comedy Show comedy live-stream on Thurs. Dec. 17th at 6PM PT/9PM ET at youtube.com/padmalakshmi and donate to FairFight here.

Pick of the Day: Outdoor Comedy Night 10/17

October 15, 2020
News
adam conover, ali macofsky, blair socci, Caleb Hearon, laci mosley, live comedy, steve hernandez

A line-up of Adam Conover, Ali Macofsky, Blair Socci, Caleb Hearon, Laci Mosley, and Steve Hernandez is so solid that they would be worth seeing in almost any setup.

Fortunately, we’re not just hipping you to another show on Zoom. This will be one of those, in times like these, one of those live, in person, outdoor shows that you might have started to hear about.

So, you just might want to catch them, live and in-person (socially distant and, again, outside, of course) this weekend at a just outside of a studio stage. To hammer the point home about being outside, it’s called Outdoor Comedy Night @ Sibling Studio in Atwater Village and they will have an early and a late show, 7:30PM & 9:30PM, for $28 a pop.

You can and should go get your tickets here and here respectively.
