Louis C.K., Amy Poehler, Wyatt Cenac, & More Get Nominations for 2016 Grammys

December 7, 2015
Uncategorized
amy poehler, back to the drawing board, brooklyn, dick cavett, jay mohr, just being honest, lisa lampanelli, live at madison square gardn, louis c.k., wyatt cenac

It’s interesting to note that all the nominated comedy albums were album versions of comedy specials.

Out of the 83 categories that The Grammys span, two categories always have comedy offerings: Best Spoken Word Album and Best Comedy Album.

This year, the comedy nominees are:

BEST SPOKEN WORD ALBUM (INCLUDES POETRY, AUDIO BOOKS & STORYTELLING)
Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic Moments, And Assorted Hijinks-Dick Cavett (Macmillan Audio)
Yes Please-Amy Poehler & Various Artists (Harper Audio)

BEST COMEDY ALBUM
Back To The Drawing Board-Lisa Lampanelli (Comedy Dynamics)
Brooklyn-Wyatt Cenac (Other Music Recording)
Happy. And A Lot.-Jay Mohr (Lolflix Inc.)
Just Being Honest-Craig Ferguson (Lionsgate Records)
Live At Madison Square Garden-Louis C.K. (Comedy Dynamics)

As mentioned above, each of the comedy album nominees are albums derived from a comedy special that was released or aired over the last year or so. That hasn’t always been the case, but there are a lot of lower profile albums that were so great that didn’t have the benefit of having a televised special to accompany it like Mary Mack’s Pig Woman. That’s not to say someone like C.K. isn’t deserving of a nomination, but we just wish there was a wider seeming scope in the field of nominees.

Hopefully, that’ll change in the coming years even if they have to add another category or two.

“Jimmy Kimmel Live“ to Return to Brooklyn for a Week of Shows When Colbert and Fallon Aren’t Taping

With The Late Show with Stephen Colbert nearly capping off the beginning of this new era of late night, there is going to be, once again, jockeying for position.

On the week of Oct. 19th, Jimmy Kimmel will do another week of Jimmy Kimmel Live in Brooklyn, which has been cleverly timed for a week where The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Tonight Starring Jimmy Fallon will have taken the week off.

With such a move, you can only wonder if he’ll do remote segments around 30 Rock or The Ed Sullivan Theater.

Either way, Kimmel should have a much easier trip this time around as a hurricane probably won’t have just happened.

We had no doubts that the Internet would back a remix album of underground rap made from cat sounds and “Meow The Jewels”, that very kind of remix of Run The Jewels, indeed reached its Kickstarter goal.

So, with that part finished, El-P, half of Run The Jewels, had to go audition cats, obviously. Watch that and throughly enjoy here.

The prolifically funny Dave Hill has somehow not blessed us all by recording a live comedy album for all of us that need a piece from Dave preserved forever in time.

Luckily, that’s changing next month, Sept. 3rd, at Union Hall when Dave records his very first comedy album off the consistently awesome label AST Records. The show itself is already sold out, but it would be most certainly worth trying to stand by for tickets.

You Can Now Watch ‘Tell Your Friends! The Concert Film’ on Hulu

A couple of years ago, Liam McEneaney made concert film/doc about his great comedy show in Brooklyn Tell Your Friends! and for awhile you could only see a trailer or maybe get the DVD of it (which includes a soundtrack if you’re interested), but now you can watch it for free on Hulu.

It has Reggie Watts, Christian Finnegan, Kurt & Kristen, Leo Allen along with interviews with Jim Gaffigan, Marc Maron, Janeane Garofolo, and more.

Whether you’re waiting for FYF or can’t go, it’s a pretty nice way to spend 80 min. this Sunday.
