Watch David Rees and Paul F. Tompkins Discuss the Importance of Signatures

December 9, 2015
Uncategorized

Going Deep with David Rees’ latest topic that most of us take for granted is signatures, the thing that most of us scribble, rather than sign, more and more as the years pass by.

David is joined by Paul F. Tompkins who perfectly hits the point home of the weight that your signature could carry, even if you’re pulling a goof of some sort.

Seeso is really making up for all that lost time on NBC’s comedy slate over the last couple of years.

Just in its beta stage right now, you already know that Seeso has a lot to offer even though they’re just getting started.

Now, they’ve gotten an official launch date: Thurs. Jan. 7th.

In addition to their vast array of offerings, they’ll adding a bunch of original content including a show called Before the Morning After where comics like Greg Proops, Jena Friedman, and Alex Edelman will riff at a diner, the long awaited hour stand-up special from Rory Scovel, Matt Besser breaking ridiculous records on Besser Breaks the Record, live variety and stand-up shows The UCB Show and Live From The Barrel House, an animated comedy The Cyanide & Happiness Show, an Australian musical comedy series with puppets, Sammy J & Randy in Ricketts Lane, and a modern dating game show, Dave & Ethan: Lovemakers.

With other shows from Jonah Ray, Cameron Esposito & Rhea Butcher, Dan Harmon, Thomas Lennon/Robert Ben Garant/Kulap Vilaysack, and more also on the way, Seeso is making the $3.99/month subscription fee sound worth it.

Dan Harmon, Justin Roiland, Dana Gould, and More to Guest Write for MST3K Revival

So, make the 12 episode goal happen already.

As if having the perfect cast of Jonah Ray, Baron Vaughn, Felicia Day, Hampton Yount, and Patton Oswalt wasn’t a cherry on top of Mystery Science Theater 3000 coming back, Joel Hodgson announced this morning that they’ll have a stellar guest writing staff:

Here’s a list of writers who have already agreed to come help out:

  • DAN HARMON, the incredible mind who created Community, hosts the Harmontownpodcast, and co-creator of the very funny Rick & Morty.
  • JUSTIN ROILAND, the other creator of Rick & Morty, as well as a very talented voice actor/comedian/artist, and a huge MSTie.
  • ROB SCHRAB, an original remote writer for MST3K, co-founder of the seminal Channel 101… and now, director of the next Lego Movie.
  • NELL SCOVELL, a long-time collaborator and friend, will be “in the house” too. She’s currently writing on the The Muppet Show but has worked on The Simpsons, Newhart andIt’s Garry Shandling’s Show, among others.
  • ERNIE CLINE, the New York Times best-selling author of Ready Player One, which will soon be a movie from Steven Spielberg! If you’ve read RP1, you know how good Ernie is with cultural references.
  • PAT ROTHFUSS, the New York Times best-selling author of The Name of Wind, has offered to have a “story breakfast” with me and go over “story beats” for the next series… and a few of you can join us!
  • PAUL & STORM, the hilarious musical act, W00tstock founders and stars, musical contributors to Despicable Me 2, my good friends and the hosts for Friday’s live “Final Countdown Telethon” will be contributing riffs and some special music!
  • DANA GOULD, the brilliant comedian and former Simpsons writer, who will also probably appear on camera as well for a cameo or two. But actually, that gets into the area of our Guest Cameos, which is a topic I want to save for tomorrow.
  • ROBERT LOPEZ, the EGOT-winning songwriter from Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon andFrozen, has offered to write some original songs for us!

The main writing staff was handpicked by Hodgson and, like pretty much everything with this revived MST3K, he was glad to bring in new blood. He added in this announcement:

So, our next staff writers are mostly people I’ve met in my travels, who I thought were funny and who have a knack for movie riffing. They come from all walks of life:

  • One is a teacher at a Montessori school,
  • One works in a bookstore,
  • One does graphics for a college,
  • One is in advertising,
  • One writes for a women’s online magazine,
  • One has a local public radio show,
  • One does IT for a design firm…

For the MST3K loyal, Joel also has got you covered:

Pretty cool, huh? I’m excited to have so many new faces and voices helping out. But I also want to make sure it’s not “too” new – you know, even as the show changes, I want to make sure we’re honoring MST3K’s past.

So, like I said, we’ve now made offers to all of MST’s original writers. While it seems like most of them won’t be available to join us, at least for now, I still hope they’ll decide to join us later. We’ll always be glad to have them back, even if it’s just for an episode or two when they can spare some time.

And actually, I’m happy to tell you that a few MST veterans have agreed to come back and “Pitch” in – not just as writers, but in other creative departments too – to make sure MST3K still has the spirit of the little cowtown puppet show you know and love:

  • CHARLIE ERICKSON,or, as he’s now known in the international DJ scene, Chuck Love, was the musical genius behind the original MST3K theme song, as well as the arranger of the haunting “MST3K Love Theme.” Charlie will be back to work on some new arrangements for us… and hopefully some new music, too!
  • BEEZ McKEEVER, MST3K’s original “Prop Diva,” will return to design special costumes for the bots. (Watch for her special line in the credits: “Robot Fashions created by Miss Beez of Duluth!”)
  • CRIST BALLAS, our original MST3K hair and makeup designer – and a long time friend – will also be joining us in that department, as well as plying his real trade: creating Academy Award-winning special effects makeup!

And finally…

  • PAUL CHAPLIN – old “Pitch” himself! – the veteran writer (over 144 MST3K episodes!) will be back demonstrate his mastery of “the craft we call riff”… and more important, to show the newer MST3K writers how we did it back in the day!

As it stands now, the Kickstarter for MST3K has raised $4,190,969 and are almost at its 9 episode goal of $4.4 million. There’s only 56 hours to go (just over two days) and it’d be great, especially with all the above info, if they could get to the $5.5 million goal so there will be 12 new feature length episodes.

Back MST3K here.

Comedy Central’s latest scripted series comes from their own digital platform. Idiotsitter, which was a web series from CC:Studios, is going to be a full fledged TV series at the network allowing for stars Charlotte Newhouse and Jillian Bell go toe-to-toe as desperate babysitter and sociopath-under-parents-house-arrest.

From the looks of the trailer, there’s going to be plenty of fun mayhem to be had when Idiotsitter premieres Thurs. Jan. 14th at 10:30PM on Comedy Central.

After 7 seasons of rambunctious fantasy sports between friends that we’re, at times, probably too close, The League is coming to a close.

The series finale airs tonight at 10PM on FXx. So, take a break from your actual fantasy sports league and watch what is likely the most famous fictional fantasy sports league.

We help but think that both this and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia reaching their ends is signaling the end of an era at FXx and the rise of Stephen Falk is the signaling of a new one.

“Nathan for You” Is Getting a 4th Season

Nathan for You has been renewed for a 4th season. Thank you everyone for the rad support. Don’t miss our big S3 finale tonight!

                                                             –@nathanfielder

Of this arguable golden era of Comedy Central, Nathan For You is definitely one of their most brilliant shows going right now. So, a 4th season seemed pretty much inevitable and the announcement of it seemed to be kept in the pocket for tonight’s season 3 finale at 10PM tonight on Comedy Central.

Either way, we’ll be excited to see how and what Nathan will pull of a season 4 of the show.

“The Bronze” Will Come Out After All Thanks to Sony Pictures Classics

Something tells us that we’ll be feeling the effects of Relativity’s collapse for awhile.

Originally, the raucous gymnastics comedy The Bronze was all set for a release date with Relativity Media.

You might have heard that Relativity then did not have a great 2015. So, many films were and still are in limbo including the highly anticipated heist comedy Masterminds starring Zach Galifianakis.

Luckily, Sony Pictures Classics has rescued The Bronze with Melissa Rauch and is set a limited release on Mar. 18th.

Hopefully, more of Relativity’s former slate of releases will be as fortunate.

Norm MacDonald Memoir “Based on a True Story” Coming Out in 2016

(via Deadline)

Just based on title alone, it’s kind of an appropriate follow-up to Me Doing Stand-Up.

If there’s someone that’s got a hell of a story for a memoir, it’s comedian Norm MacDonald. Norm is almost as known with his back-and-forth relationship with the entertainment biz as he is for being downright funny.

Random House’s Spiegel & Grau is set to publish Based on a True Story in 2016 and it will indeed track the roller coaster of a career that Norm has had.

Though the title just might be ironic, we wonder if Norm would put anything fictional in his memoir and, if so, what it would be. Perhaps, it would be that perfect joke he has been seeking where the set-up and punchline are one in the same?

Transparent, Veep, Anomalisa, and Master of None Get Golden Globe Comedy Nominations as Well as Joy and The Martian

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association continues to have a broader definition of comedy than anyone else during awards season.

There are your favorites as well as the favored upstarts in the field of this year’s Golden Globes nominees. The consistently praised Anomalisa and Master of None, heavy returning favorites Veep, Silicon Valley, and Transparent, comedy superstar Amy Schumer for Trainwreck, and brash newcomer Rachel Bloom for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend all got nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. There were even some noms for work that should be getting more love from more awards, but, somehow, isn’t. This includes Lily Tomlin’s turn in Grandma, Melissa McCarthy for Spy, and Hulu’s Casual from Jason Reitman.

With all of that said, films and shows that are being considered in different lights, mainly dramatic rather than comedic, have found their way into the comedy nominees, like they usually do, at The Golden Globes such as Joy, The Martian, The Big Short, and Orange Is the New Black. Certainly, Joy, The Martian, and The Big Short weren’t touting themselves as comedies in trailers and promotion and Orange Is the New Black has shifted to dramatic consideration with other awards. We’re not exactly sure why the distinction for comedy is so noticeably different with HFPA, but it does possibly allow for some notoriety for work that wouldn’t really get recognized otherwise.

So, here are the comedy nominees for this year’s Golden Globes.

Just Don’t Give ‘Car Hugs’ as Demonstrated by Russell Mills

When driving someone somewhere, the interaction where people part ways can often be tough given that you have to make the extra effort from your seated position in the car.

In short, don’t try to hug someone in a car. It’s always weird. Just give some less meaningful gesture because, well, we’re all alone in the universe anyway, right?

Also, Russell Mills shows you the physical aspects of why you should avoid ‘car hugs’

Mark Hamill, Neil Patrick Harris, Jack Black, Bill Hader, Joel McHale, and Jerry Seinfeld Might Guest Star in New MST3K

The likeliness that this will happen beyond MST3K creator Joel Hodgson getting interest from the names above probably will be greater if you donate in the final 30 hours of their Kickstarter campaign.

On top of the amazing cast and guest writers that Hodgson has announced, Joel has played what will is, we’re guessing, his final card before the Kickstarter campaign to revive Mystery Science Theater 3000 finishes.

Indeed, Jack Black, Mark Hamill, Neil Patrick Harris, Bill Hader, Joel McHale, and Jerry Seinfeld have expressed interest and Joel has even called out to the likes of Amy Poehler, Amy Schumer, Lily Tomlin, and Tina Fey to come on the show if they’d like.

We’ll all have a better picture of what the status of the guest star list will be for MST3K when the Kickstarter ends. By the way, they have reached their 9 episode goal and are shooting for their final stretch goal of $5.5 million. As of this post, they’re at $4,524,412 with less than a day and half to go.

Help them reach 12 full episodes here.

Even when behind-the-scenes, when one would supposedly let their guard down and show what was going on when none of us were looking, Nathan Fielder is still pretty damn funny.

The word of Ron Howard, the narrator on Arrested Development and someone who just got his second star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame is hard to argue against.

While on Good Morning America, Howard brought up the current status of Arrested Development, which is supported both by Netflix and 20th Century Fox and currently being written by Mitch Hurwitz and his writing staff. The fate of the series, as it has always been since it left Fox, rests with the cast and their availability.

Let’s hope that they can all get freed up at the same time for this new season.

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert meet again. This time, rather than as hosts of companion shows fictionally on opposite sides of the political spectrum, they meet as Late Show host and surprise guest.

Stewart is still on the march to get the Zadroga Act, the act that ensures needed medical care for 9/11 first responders, and is calling up big favors left and right. Already he has gone on The Daily Show and, just last night, he not only went on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, but he did so with his stunning Donald Trump impression.

There’s no way that Congress isn’t watching this like everyone else is, right?

For those of you that think Ricky Gervais was going to do something crazy returning as host of The Golden Globes, you probably have no idea what crazy thing Miller is going to do as host of The Critics’ Choice Awards.

T.J. Miller has hosted numerous shows (Mash-Up, Crunchie Awards, and The Golden Trailer Awards to name a few) both as himself and a blue demon and in pretty much every case it’s been an experience that Miller can only conjure up.

That’s why we’re glad to hear that he’s getting bigger and bigger profile awards show to host like The Critics’ Choice Awards, which will encapsulate both The Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and The Critics’ Choice TV Awards. The ceremony is set to broadcast on Sun. Jan .17th on A&E, Lifetime, and LMN at 5PM PST.
