Samantha Bee Has an Emotional Goodbye at “The Daily Show”

May 1, 2015
Uncategorized
samantha bee, the daily show, tribute

The final chapters of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart are coming to a close.

One by one, longtime Daily Show correspondents have gotten offers to go solo and pursue their own show like John Oliver, Larry Wilmore, Jason Jones, and now Samantha Bee.

Being at The Daily Show longer than any other than correspondent, it was probably too hard to do the normal faux segment leading into a tribute that The Daily Show normally does.

So, they just cut to the montage. Watch Sam Bee’s final moments at The Daily Show here.

Jimmy Pardo Signs Overall Deal with Conan’s Conaco

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

Maybe Pardo can now make an entire game show out of that one bit where audience members attempt to get asked questions by him.

Not only is Jimmy Pardo the longtime warm-up for Conan O’Brien as well as a regular guest, but he is now part of the Conaco empire after signing an overall deal.

For years, Jimmy has tried to develop various shows like Write Now!, The Weekly Awards, etc. and perhaps now has a better shot at getting those projects past being a pilot.

Pardo’s probably got a lot of very intriguing things that will come through this pipeline. Though we don’t know what it would entail, we’d imagine Jimmy doing some sort of game show named “Go Home and Google It”.

Weird Al Yankovic Does an Unboxing Video For His Grammy Award

Unless it’s a lamp shaped like a leg, it’s not too often you get to see the unboxing of a major award.

In case you don’t know, most people don’t get to take home the statues they are handed at big time awards shows. Those are just for the cameras.

The actual statues that they put on display come much later in the mail and Weird Al Yankovic graciously gives us a look into how “elaborate” it is to get your Grammy in the mail.

Watch Steve Martin’s Farewell to David Letterman

May 2, 2015

Just in case you wondering, Steve Martin’s still got it.

Save for some sort of big star studded musical number at the final episode of The Late Show, Steve Martin made his final appearance and chatted with his old pal David Letterman.

He even made a “touching” video tribute to Letterman both in what he has done and what he’ll possibly do.

Martin also had one “final gift” for Dave to remember him by.

While Letterman is gone in less than a month, we hope Martin will continue showing up on late night to do bits.

Here Are Letterman Tributes in The Forms of a Guest Retrospective and a Conan O’Brien Essay

May 3, 2015
Uncategorized
conan o'brien, david letterman, retrospective, the late show, tribute

You have heard plenty and will be hearing plenty how much of an impact David Letterman made on comedy.

Pretty much all of it is worth watching, reading, etc.

As Dave’s final day, May 20th, at The Late Show nears, the reminiscing of Letterman’s landmark career has gotten well under way.

This week, a montage of his guests over the decades was put together showcasing Dave in his element with some of his favorite guests and favorite moments on The Late Show.

Also, Conan O’Brien wrote a heartfelt, personal essay at EW about what David Letterman meant to him and the state of comedy even as it is now.

Rest assured, there will be plenty more oral histories, speeches, etc. for Dave over the next two and a half weeks.

John Oliver and “Last Week Tonight” Versus Standardized Testing

May 4, 2015

Here’s one of the best parts of your balanced weekly TV diet.

Last night’s Last Week Tonight closely examined standardized testing in America and found, probably much to the righteous delight of many, that there are several major flaws in the system. While the goal is to assess the quality of teachers as well as bring students nationwide to a higher education level, Oliver and his team find that the inner workings of the current system fall short of the mark.

So, There Was Some Sort of “Todd Glass Show” Pilot Taping Over the Weekend

May 4, 2015
Uncategorized

The nothing but multi-layered fun podcast that is The Todd Glass Show seems like it had a pilot taping with a full set and Eddie Pepitone and James Adomian as guests.

More evidence to this happening exists on The Todd Glass Show Instagram account.

We don’t have any more details about the taping at this time, but given that Todd does basically whatever he wants on his show (and that really runs the gamut of anything that strikes his fancy), we’re guessing that he also did whatever he wanted in this supposed pilot taping, which probably included wonderful bits within bits within bits like Eddie yelling about dancing.

More to come soon.

Louis C.K. Set to Write, Direct, and Star in Full-Length Feature “I’m a Cop”

It would seem that C.K. is just really good at playing an awkward cop.

With having a groundbreaking accomplishments with his stand-up, TV show, and web site, Louis C.K. has now set his sights back on one of his first loves, film.

C.K. will write, direct, and star, as is becoming a bit of his auteur signature, in “I’m A Cop” following the life of a bumbling volunteer cop who is goaded into becoming an actual cop after the passing of his mother, a decorated retired cop. Legendary producer Scott Rudin is on board for the project as well.

If you remember C.K. playing a cop on Parks and Recreation and attempting to play a cop in an episode of Louie, you know that C.K. might have something brilliant, yet again, up his sleeve.

Two Attackers Were Shot Dead at a Muhammad Art Exhibit and Contest

May 5, 2015
Uncategorized
american freedom defense initiative, cartoon, garland texas, muhummad

(via USA Today)

Well, this really and unfortunately happened yesterday.

A search for the best cartoon depiction of the prophet Muhammad was put on by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, who have been noted to fight for freedom of speech as well as specifically criticize elements of Islam, which culminated in a contest with thousands of dollars in prize money and art exhibition in Garland, Texas.

Two roommates, Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi. came to the venue with body armor and assault rifles and opened fire. Simpson has been suspected of terrorist activity in the past. An officer on duty for the event shot and killed both attackers and only one other security guard was injured during the whole attack.

It’s unfortunate that any of this happened. It’s horribly unfortunate that people would ever be shot over cartoon drawings. It’s also unfortunate that many feel the need to put on the spectacle of making a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad in order to exercise their freedom of speech.

As it stands now, it seems like we’re due for a vicious cycle of more cartoons of sacred icons and subsequent shootings or shooting attempts by fringe groups on either side.

We do think that freedom of speech should be defended, especially when it comes to comedy, but it shouldn’t be used as a veil for racism, jingoism, or bigotry. Rather, it should be used as a tool to talk about all those awful things and get them out in the open in the hopes that people can be enlightened about how misguided those notions are, especially when it comes to comedy.

For now, though it’s only tangentially applicable here, we can only recommend watching Aasif Mandvi’s Halal In The Family again.

Yes, this is finally happening.

Well, July 8th-11th will be the dates that they’ll tape stuff from the world famous convention, which means they’ll actually have new episodes airing on Fri. and Sat.

Here’s Conan with all the details.

Andrew Santino, Andy Woodhull, Barry Rothbart, Beth Stelling, Brooks Wheelan, Hampton Yount…

…Joe List, Liza Treyger, Michelle Buteau, Phil Hanley, Randy Liedtke, Sam Morril, Sean Donnelly, and Tone Bell will be your line-up for this year’s round of half hour stand-up specials on Comedy Central’s The Half Hour.

There you have it folks. You’ve probably seen many of these great comics recently on late night talk shows, panel shows all over cable, viral videos, in various roles on sitcoms, web series, and on SNL for a season, but now you can finally watch them in more than 3-5 minute increments.

You’ll be able to catch these specials either being taped in Boston as Comedy Central usually does or on Comedy Central much later in 2015.
