Conan O’Brien Attempts a Novelty Escape with Associate Producer Jordan Schlansky

April 17, 2015

Conan Associate Producer Jordan Schlansky showed as much excitement as he’s ever shown and his face still barely changes expression.

The latest Conan remote has Conan O’Brien entering the novelty attraction known as an “escape room” at Escape Room LA where groups of people use clues to break out of a room that they’re locked in.

To make things more “fun”, he’s enlisted the help of the infamous Jordan Schlansky who shows signs that he might possibly be excited.

Watch it here.

There Will Be a “Archie vs. Sharknado” Comic Book

(via Deadline)

Given that it’s animated, one can only imagine if they’ll even go more over-the-top than they have in the trilogy of Sharknado movies.

SyFy and Archie Comics are indeed teaming up to have a special issue of Archie where a tornado of sharks comes through Riverdale set to come out in July written by Sharknado director himself Anthony C. Ferrante.

One can only wonder how campy the folks behind Sharknado will get in the Archie universe. Maybe one shark will eat Jughead and don his crown?

“Louie” Can’t Find a Place to Poop

April 17, 2015
Uncategorized
fx, louie, louis c.k.

Here’s a pretty good example of how a stand-up bit can inspire, rather than be transposed into a sitcom scene.

Louis C.K. has had a bit or two about getting older and having to poop and on last night’s episode of Louie there was a whole scene delving right into that topic.

Unlike many comedian based sitcoms that often take stand-up bits and put it right into a scene almost word-for-word, this need to poop while escorting his daughters around gets embellished with more details and nuance as a scene.

The result, as you might expect with Louie, is pretty great.

Watch a Quest For Dopeness in The Full Trailer For Sundance Hit “Dope”

If you took a bit of the story of Orange County, then set it in Inglewood, add some shine for 90s hip hop and a drug dealer twist, then it looks like you have something around the neighborhood of Dope.

Rick Famuyiwa’s Dope follows a straight laced, straight A kid who is trying to get into the best college he can and also, simultaneously, live up to the title of the movie.

The journey, according to this trailer, looks like it’ll be a jovial ride tinged with the nostalgia of hip from two decades ago. It certainly struck a chord with the Sundance crowd earlier this year as it sold at the festival.

FYI, Dope comes out June 19th.

Classic bits from the MNN show will be played on Fusion next week.

While the premiere of the brand new Chris Gethard Show at Fusion isn’t until May, Fusion is going to start to air recut portions of episodes that put The Chris Gethard Show on the map in the first place.

Such things include Night of Zero Laughs and We Will Predict Your Future.

See what you potentially have been missing in one of the best public access shows of all time starting Thurs. Apr. 23rd at 8:30PM.

Chicago’s “Comedians You Should Know” Expanding to LA

CYSK is just the latest in a great trend of comedy shows expanding across the country and specifically having a version of their show in LA.

San Francisco’s The Business, Cincinnati ’s Underbelly, and NYC’s Gandhi, Is That You? and Fresh Out, are just a few shows that have kept their flagship shows going in their hometowns, but have expanded to have a regular show here in LA. There are even more shows in the LA comedy scene that have just moved to outright to LA from elsewhere like Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen.

Chicago’s Comedians You Should Know, six years running at Timothy O’Toole’s, will now join this growing list of nationally franchised indie comedy shows.

Chicago comics have rooted themselves quite well in LA. From people a year or so in all the way to Kyle Kinane, there are more comics in LA who started in Chicago than comics who actually started comedy in Los Angeles.

So, CYSK will be undoubtedly be a welcome monthly addition to the scene starting Apr. 30th at 9:30PM at Genghis Cohen, hosted by CYSK’s Joe Kilgallon. You can and should get tickets here.

NYC’s Jo Firestone Gives a Rundown Through The Several Wonderfully Bizarre Shows She Has Created

April 18, 2015
Uncategorized
jo firestone, punderdome 3000, running late, scott rogowsky

You might have seen NYC based Jo Firestone on Vulture’s recent 50 Comedians You Should Know in 2015 and that might have something to do with how she has let her imagination run amok and birth so many different, innovative, weird, and wonderful comedy shows like Punderdome 3000 or The NYC Inner Beauty Pageant.

NYC live late night talk show Running Late with Scott Rogowsky invited Firestone as a guest last month and went into detail about all of her crazy shows along with how she thinks they compare to a traditional format show like Running Late.

Despite what Jo self-deprecatingly said, they all sound pretty great including like the pun competition of Punderdome 3000 or Friends of Single People where friends of singles basically play The Dating Game for them.

She even introduced a new show/game with Bird, Murderer, or Birderer.

We’re not sure if anyone is keeping count, but Jo might have a world record for most comedy shows going at the same time and we hope that you can catch as many as you can soon.

Wilco curates a music and arts festival in North Adams, Massachusetts known as Solid Sound and they’ve included a very nice handful of comedy along with it.

On the weekend of Jun. 26th, renowned band Wilco will put on their annual festival Solid Sound at Mass Moca. Tig Notaro, Paul F. Tompkins, John Hodgman, Superego, and Jessica Williams will comprise their offerings on the comedy stage, which should make for a lovely weekend of indie music and comedy outside of a contemporary art museum.

Learn Actual Vegan and Other Special Diet Recipes While Getting Darkly Satiric on “Cooking for Vegans and Other Horrible People”

April 19, 2015
Uncategorized
cooking, cooking for vegans and other horrible people, cupcakes, halal, how to, isis, parody, pregnant, rachel staman, satire, vegans, watermelon sushi

It would be pretty great if stuff like this was on The Food Network, TLC, or The Cooking Channel.

Cooking For Vegans and Other Horrible People takes cooking for people that have special restrictions with their diets and puts a sharp, satiric edge on it at every angle. Host Rachel Staman also teaches actual recipes, which look kind of appetizing.

Per the description of the web series, “Join Rachel Staman as she cooks for Vegans and Other Horri – nice, horribly nice wonderful people who have no reason to come after us for any reason.”

In the three episodes thus far, Staman cooks for vegans, pregnant women, and ISIS, which, before you get heated about the idea of those three groups being lumped together, you should just watch it first.

If you’re missing the absurd side of cooking as it’s been awhile since a new Henry’s Kitchen has popped up, Cooking For Vegans and Other Horrible People should fix that right up.

Please enjoy what could very well be a sketch series pilot for Big Grande.

In the same ballpark of IFC’s Comedy Crib, Funny or Die has their own sketch group incubation initiative with the Funny or Die Test Tube. They handpick groups and then give them a little scratch and they put together sketches and whatever else they want to put together.

UCB’s Big Grande put together over 20 minutes worth of sketches that we’d love to see be a pilot somewhere.

Watch it here.

Jon Stewart Expounds on Why He’s Leaving “The Daily Show”

April 20, 2015
Uncategorized
daily show, jon stewart, the guardian

Through a few chats with The Guardian’s Hadley Freeman, Jon Stewart gives his two cents and then some why he’s leaving the show that has become a cornerstone for so many people for well over a decade.

In his own words, he explains, “It’s not like I thought the show wasn’t working any more, or that I didn’t now how to do it. It was more, ‘Yup, it’s working. But I’m not getting the same satisfaction.”

While Stewart has built himself and The Daily Show into the sort of legendary groundbreaking institution that Saturday Night Live once was revered for being, it’s a lot to ask of anyone to keep that up even for a few years, save 16.

Freeman finds that Stewart is leaving The Daily Show while it’s still humming along quite nicely so he can do other things besides watch Fox News and go through commenting on another election year.

One should note that, on top of Stewart’s exit, nearly all the most senior regular correspondents are leaving, which means that The Daily Show, this year, will be almost look entirely new with Trevor Noah as host and Hasan Minhaj, Jordan Klepper, and Jessica Williams as the day-in-day out correspondents.

Though it might not be a shake-up that some are looking for in late night, it will be a shake-up nonetheless, which we’re more than ready for.

John Oliver Improves on CNN’s “Doomsday Video” and Gives a Crash Course in Patent Trolls

John Oliver and the team at Last Week Tonight put up another week of important and hilarious work that shows how deserving of The Peabody Award they really are.

At the end of the world, CNN has had, for years, a video cued up to play us all out. Almost needless to say, it’s not very comforting.

So, Last Week Tonight recruited Martin Sheen to guide us through a much better video to play before the last moments before annihilation.

Oliver also gave a crash course in patents and the disturbing presence of patent trolls.

When the end of the world will exactly come around is up for debate, but we certainly hope that it’s a very long time from now, but also that Last Week Tonight is still running just like it is now.

The host of StarTalk vs. the host of The Nightly Show? Who would win in a trivia contest?

We guess it would depend who is a guest on which show.

While Neil deGrasse Tyson is the face of space exploration and often corrects pop culture in misrepresentation of outer space, Larry Wilmore is wildly clever as the host of The Nightly Show.

See who gets the edge in here (hint: this is a segment for The Nightly Show).

Just by the title, this will be a perfect companion to Jen’s first book I Can Barely Take Care of Myself.

Jen Kirkman is indeed working on her second book “I Know What I’m Doing-And Other Lies I Tell Myself: Dispatches From a Life Under Construction” as you can see here. It’s set for release in 2016, but will go on pre-sale this soon.

Kirkman’s first book dealt a lot with not having kids and, by the title, Jen is going to take on a lot more this time around than just being “childless”.

So, we’re definitely looking forward to it.

“High Maintenance” Headed To HBO For 6 Episodes

If you’ve seen posters for High Maintenance lately, you might have read that it’s one of the best shows not on television.

That’s about to change.

Hit indie web series High Maintenance, which had been leading the charge on Vimeo’s Vimeo On Demand platform, is now getting bumped up to HBO for 6 episodes.

It’s the latest series to expand from the web to actually being broadcast on TV like Broad City, The Chris Gethard Show, This Is Not Happening with Ari Shaffir, etc.

Extra points go to HBO for announcing it appropriately on 4/20.

After watching this, you’ll probably play Sorry! yourself just so you can never think of ‘sorry’, both the game and word, ever the same way.

Balloon Dropped Version of “The Interview” Intended for North Korea Runs 17 Mins and Starts Off With North Korea Propaganda

Uncategorized

So, North Korean forces have a total response time of 20 minutes plus?

Apparently, almost half the North Korean population has access to a DVD player, which is part of the reason why balloons full of DVDs of The Interview and pamphlets are being sent to North Korea.

However, extra measures are being taken to fool authorities. North Korean propaganda plays at the front of the film for five minutes, then 12 minutes of a very condensed version of The Interview follows. This makes us think that to get away with watching The Interview in North Korea, which is a heavy crime, you have to be able to watch it in less than 20 minutes and/or make sure the first five minutes of any DVD isn’t anti-North Korea.

We wonder if North Korea reads The Hollywood Reporter as they have footage of said DVD.

Either way, The Interview is proving to still be more historic than it ever intended to be.

Before Playing House, many of you were well acquainted with Jessica St. Clair as the intern frequently featured at Comedy Bang! Bang! known as Marissa Wompler.

As with many interns in this business, they move on up and get a show, though it’s usually something else besides a podcast broadcast from a library.

St. Clair is now reunited with her Playing House co-star Lennon Parham, though in character as Wompler and Lennon as Charlotte Listler, a teacher/former sniper/co-host for a new podcast at Earwolf, WOMP IT UP! .

The going-ons of Marina Del Rey High, at least the one that exists in the CBB universe, is the focus here and with St. Clair and Parham at the helm, it’ll be a damn fun ride.

The Lego Movie Sequel will be coming out May 18th, 2018, one week early.

The LEGO Batman spin-off will also be coming out early on Feb. 10th, 2017.

The Ninjago spinoff has gotten pushed slightly back to Sept. 22nd., 2017.

Just in case you had already set reminders for the release dates of all the movies that are in the works at The LEGO Movie franchise, you now get to joyfully move a couple of them up.

We sincerely hope that every single in this movie franchise stays consistent to the tone and self-awareness that Chris Miller and Phil Lord have set up with the original movie.

This means the last few moves of this new era of late night will be Letterman’s set to exit in May, then Stewart will follow in August presumably with Trevor Noah’s taking the helm soon after, and then Colbert will take over The Late Show in September.

So, maybe just over three months from the start of a shake up?

James Adomian’s Paul Giamatti Stops by Comedy Bang! Bang!

Though it never seems to be a good time for James Adomian’s Paul Giamatti, we love it when he shows up and just indulges in abject sadness.

Basically, if there was a show called Man vs. Sad, Adomian’s version of Giamatti would be hosting and would be always ranting on how the game is rigged.

Watch his Comedy Bang! Bang! appearance here.
