The Black Empowerment Network Presents Dr. Cornel West on a Russian Interview Show

January 5, 2015
Uncategorized
black empowerment network, channel 101

The amazing DeMorge Brown who you’ve probably seen plenty of places (hopefully Channel 101) has started a series of videos, so we hope, under the umbrella of The Black Empowerment Network.

Often times, DeMorge plays a great version of Cornel West and, with that, puts him in decidedly weirder contexts. This particular one for B.E.N. puts his Cornel West on a Russian talk show hosted by Anna Seregina (who hails from Russia, but has made quite a home here in America and mastered our language to the point of doing great stand-up in English without any trace of an accent).

It’s called вопросы с Aннандрией Featuring Guest Dr. Cornel West

Get lost in translation and wonderment in watching this right now.

Also, we think Aaron Moles (also frequently on Channel 101) might be playing Putin?

Hello world! Tomorrow @womencomedy starts releasing sketches we made for @IFC’s Comedy Crib! – http://t.co/RCxYiWNVRz pic.twitter.com/7d45pFOMLR

One of our favorite sketch groups around, Women Comedy (Dave Ross, Jake Weisman, Allen Strickland Williams, and Pat Bishop), is now moving up to the next level, or as they’re saying, “selling out” by going to IFC.com to make their uber-absurdist sketches.

Women’s Jake Weisman says to start looking out for new videos at IFC starting tomorrow.

In the meantime, you can get caught up with their YouTube channel as well as their darkly satirical Twitter account.

More so than Jan. 1st, Jan. 5th better marked the new year as everyone seemed to get back to work. That includes late night talk shows and stand-up comedians doing sets on said late night talk shows.

So, with that said, we’re off to the races for late night sets with Lachlan Patterson, who you saw on Last Comic Standing last year, on The Late Late Show with (for the week) Drew Carey.

The fourth season of Girls hasn’t even premiered yet and HBO is already going ahead with ordering a fifth season from Lena Dunham.

The premiere of this latest season is this Sun. Jan. 11th at 9PM. If HBO’s move was to make season four more enticing with a fifth one in the works, then their plan worked.

The first full trailer just got released and you can watch it here.

After that, you can catch the premiere of Man Seeking Woman on Wed. Jan. 14th 10:30PM on FXx.

The Interview Now Highest Grossing Online Film of All Time From Making $31 Million

Until recently, movies released through VOD hadn’t even seen grosses that go into the double digit millions. However, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg‘s The Interview changed all of that as, over the course of two weeks, it brought in over $31 million from being sold online and through various cable and satellite providers.

Of the cinema’s entire canon of milestone historic films, The Interview will have to be included for the circumstances surrounding its release, its online gross, and the fact that, in spite of all of that, has plenty of dick and Lord of the Rings jokes.

Netflix Announces Premiere Dates For “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “Grace and Frankie”

With 2015 just under way, Netflix already has their line-up for their latest series releases featuring two high profile comedies, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which they bought from NBC and ordered a second season on top of that, and Grace and Frankie with Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda as former rivals that bond over each of their husbands leaving them so they can marry each other.

The 13 episodes of the first season of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is set to release Mar. 6th and Grace and Frankie is set for release on May 8th.

So, that gives you some time to watch binge watch whatever other series you were watching before you get into these.

French Satirical Magazine ‘Charlie Hebdo’ Loses 12 From Terrorist Attack

January 7, 2015

This morning, the offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo were attacked by unidentified terrorists (via BBC News). 12 were killed including the magazine’s editor and two cops and four others suffered critical injuries. Charlie Hebdo had been firebombed before after publishing a cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad as well as receiving a number of death threats.

The gunmen are still on the loose as of this post.

Satire and comedy, it would seem are under attack as of late. The cyber attack on Sony Pictures for The Interview and this killing spree at Charlie Hedbo must have been manifested from outrage in the most pathetic fashion. Both have attacked icons that have certain, extremist followers that abhor the idea that their icons would ever be questioned whatsoever.

As, Joe Randazzo, former head editor at The Onion, America’s top satirical magazine, said regarding Charlie Hebdo just over an hour ago,

“If it turns out that members of Al Qaeda or some other radical “Islamic” sect carried out this attack, the saddest, most profoundly ironic thing about it will have been that the satire worked. It did its job. It so threatened its target, cut so deeply at the truth, that it resorted to the most cowardly, most offensive and despicable form of lashing out.”

“You cannot kill an idea by murdering innocent people – though you can nudge it toward suicide. That is the real threat: that we’ll allow our fear, or our anger, to kill ourselves."

At this moment, big crowds are standing in solidarity throughout France, holding up signs like the one above that say “Je Suis Charlie”, which translates in English to “I Am Charlie”.

While sharing the image of Je Suis Charlie is certainly one way of sharing your support, we urge you to exercise your freedom of speech and not let those that are scared of what your words might do, especially when it comes to comedy, instill terror in us all.

Help David Cross Truly Independently Release “Hits” in Theaters and as Pay-What-You-Want (Oh, A “Mr. Show” Reunion Is Also Really Happening)

In lieu of a traditional indie film release, David Cross is taking cues from Radiohead and Louis C.K. in order to get his film Hits to fans more directly.

Cross wants to play Hits it in select cities across the country as well as on BitTorrent for a Pay-What-You-Want and also a release on iTunes, etc. To do this, he’s going looking to raise $100K on Kickstarter to do this all on his own and the more money that’s raised, the more cities they can visit.

As you’d expect there are some great rewards for helping crowdfund this experimental film release of David Cross’ Hits. One of them is being in the background of a Mr. Show reunion.

That’s right, Paul F. Tompkins wasn’t deceiving us when he tweeted out this picture on New Year’s Eve and a reunion of David, Bob, Jay Johnston. Scott Aukerman, Paul, and more is indeed happening this year.

“Grand Budapest Hotel” and “Guardians of The Galaxy” Get Writers Guild Awards Nominations

Of all the nominations that have been announced in this current awards season, it seems the Writers Guild Awards has gone a somewhat different and refreshing direction. Already, they have Transparent, Last Week Tonight, and Inside Amy Schumer nominated for TV.

Grand Budapest Hotel is an awards front runner and gets a nod here, but Guardians of The Galaxy, a big budget studio comic book space adventure with plenty of comedy injected throughout, also gained a nomination from the WGA for Adapted Screenplay today.

Guardians of The Galaxy isn’t nominated in such a category in any other awards so far. Maybe, that will change now and other movies that are more readily described as “fun” will be taken more seriously by various academies and associations?

Hulu Renews “Hotwives of Orlando” For Second Season, “Hotwives of Las Vegas”

The top notch parody of reality TV continues in the Burning Love/Hotwives vein as Hulu has just ordered up another season of Hotwives of Orlando.

In a similar fashion to the way The Real Wives franchise, their source material, has spread itself out, Las Vegas will be the new site of this second season of Hotwives. The cast from season 1 will also not be returning, but we’re sure they’ll get a cast that’s just as stellar as Casey Wilson, Kristen Schaal, Tymberlee Hill, Angela Kinsey, Andrea Savage, Danielle Schneider, Matt Besser, Seth Morris, and more.

UPDATE: Original Hotwives set to return.

We now wonder if the Hotwives universe and Burning Love universe will ever cross.

If you loved Going Deep with David Rees on NatGeo last year, you’ll be thrilled to hear that The National Geographic Channel is only headed more in that direction for 2015.

Case in point, John Atschuler and Dave Krinsky, who have been involved in producing and/or creating Silicon Valley, King of The Hill, and more are now going to make a comedic world history series for NatGeo. Puppets, sketches, etc. are to be employed in this show, which we’re already excited for.

We are now wondering if they’ll have a segment where they will compare actual time period to ones fictionalized for comedic effect by Mel Brooks’ History of The World Part 1.

You’ve heard of album recordings done in bars before, but probably none like Bar 107 in Downtown LA. It is rather on the small side of a venue, but, nonetheless, a favorite hang of many comedians when in downtown.

Matt Dwyer will be recording his comedy album “Reluctant” there for Jonah Ray’s Literally FIgurative Records off of AST Records come next week, Sat. Jan. 17th at 4PM.

You’ll already be downtown for Riot LA, which is only a few blocks away, anyway. So, this would be the perfect to start off next Sat.

You might have heard by now that French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo was attacked by terrorists who claimed 12 lives.

Jon Stewart and Conan O’Brien made sure to take time for their late night programs to express their grief over the tragedy on The Daily Show and Conan, respectively.

Also, Louis C.K., in a sign of solidarity with Charlie Hebdo, used a marker to write “Charlie Hebdo” while playing Madison Square Garden last night.

HUGE s/o to LouisCK for taking a sharpie to his tee, spreading awareness for #CharlieHebdo. Great show, great job. pic.twitter.com/kzQYohmauE

With all the well wishing going around the globe, you’ll be happy to know that Charlie Hebdo’s next issue will have a million copies published as opposed to their usual 60K (via The Hollywood Reporter).

So, maybe you’ll want to get a copy when it comes out next week.

Je Suis Charlie.

Nick Kroll Recounts The Time Ed Hardy’s Christian Audigier Screwed Him Over

In what seems to be a whole other dimension, there was a time and place where sailor tattoo inspired clothing was all the rage and Ed Hardy was at the center of it all.

Also, at that very same time, Nick Kroll was making fun of the whole Ed Hardy brand with Jon Daly as The Ed Hardy Boyz.

Christian Audigier, the proprietor of Ed Hardy, was really into the videos, or so Kroll thought. Watch the whole story of what happened here.
