Pick of the Day: The Crossword Show with Zach Sherwin 7/19 & 7/20 (in NYC)

June 13, 2022
News
caveat, crossword show, nyc comedy, zach sherwin

After the last two or so years, you’ve probably gotten into crossword puzzles or some form of them or even just had a period of quarantine where you got into it because you were looking something that wasn’t the news.

With all of that said, the mystery of crossword puzzles doesn’t just have to be limited to solving it over coffee or while on break or while hiding the bathroom during your 15. The ever clever Zach Sherwin has devised both one of the most astonishing displays of linguistics and a damn fun live show where a panel of comedians (and the audience) solve a crossword puzzle in real time. Sherwin exquisitely weaves master level wordplay, original rap, and so much more into an experience that will leave you dazzled and wondering, for quite some time, how he came up with all of it.

Zach is bringing The Crossword Show out east to LES’ favorite comedy venue, Caveat in NYC on Tues. Jul. 19th & Wed. Jul. 20th at 7PM ET. Tickets are $15 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Dave Ross and Chris Cresswell Make One of the Shortest (and Tiniest) Comedy Albums of All Time with “Almost Nothing”

June 10, 2022
News
chris cresswell, dave ross, shortest album, vinyl record

There is such a proliferation of comedy on a daily basis thanks to the Internet and all of its tendrils (YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, podcasts, Substack, OnlyFans), making it harder and harder to stand out from the ever burgeoning population of folks in some sort of comedy lane.

That said, it’s not impossible and Dave Ross and Chris Chriswell prove that today with their tiny 4 in. vinyl record aptly named Almost Nothing.

It qualifies as an EP with more than three songs and coming under 30 minutes with four podcast themes of shows that Dave started during lockdown as well as a great two minute joke by Dave. The entire running time of Almost Nothing makes it, to our knowledge, the second shortest comedy album of all time (the shortest record goes to Jarrod Alonge’s far too long How To Pronounce Band Names: Warped Tour Edition). However, the physical size of the record and the fact that Dave and Chris actually had it physically pressed and that the podcast theme songs and Dave’s going-to-the-gym joke are actually worth way more than than the four minutes and change you’d actually spend listening to it.

Also, Dave made a whole, thoroughly entertaining page for the album with the URL: nothing.guns.beer.

The layers of what we think of as a comedy artifact and an album and a joke are kind of beautifully hysterical and you can (and should) buy Almost Nothing here.

Oh, if you’re the streaming type Dave adds, “OR IF YOU JUST WANNA HEAR THE TRACKS, PLEASE STREAM THEM! THE ALBUM IS PAY-WHAT-YOU-WANT ON BANDCAMP, SO YOU CAN DOWNLOAD FOR FREE, OR PAY US A CENT OR TWO, OR PAY US A BILLION DOLLARS. IF YOU ARE JEFF BEZOS, PLEASE PAY US A BILLION DOLLARS. IT’S ALSO ON THE BIG BAD APPS LIKE SPOTIFY AND APPLE MUSIC CUZ WE ALL HAVE THOSE, WE CAN’T HELP IT, EVEN THOUGH WE HATE IT, I’M SORRY THE WORLD IS LIKE THIS.”

Pick of the Day: Thank You Very Much: A Juneteenth Comedy Show (in LA) 6/18

June 10, 2022
News
candice thompson, chinedu unaka, chris spencer, dave helem, juneteenth, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy, zainab johnson

As Juneteenth, a major milestone in slavery coming to an end in the U.S., is now a federal holiday, there are, of course, comedy shows/happenings to go right along with it, especially ones celebrating black comedians, giving them shine when they still aren’t receiving it the way they deserve.

The very funny Dave Helem is putting on a very special stand-up showcase, Thank You Very Much, in South Central’s cultural hub, Leimert Park, at The Metaphor Club to highlight some of those very same comedians that represent some of LA’s very best.

For this Juneteenth show, Dave will bring in

Zainab Johnson (Upload, Bust Down)
Chris Spencer (Black-ish, The Real Husbands of Hollywood)
Clayton Thomas (Family Time, Uncle Buck)
Chinedu Unaka (Insecure, House Party)
Candice Thompson (The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon)

Thank You Very Much: A Juneteenth Show is set for Sat. Jun. 18th at 8PM PT, again, at The Metaphor Club. Tickets are $20 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Please Enjoy Penelope Cruz Flossing and Other Ridiculous Things in Latest “Official Competition” Trailer

June 9, 2022
News
antonio banderas, gaston duprat, mariano cohn, oscar martinez, penelop cruz

Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat‘s biting satire of the arthouse cinema world, Official Competition, is very close to arriving to wherever you want to see it. There will be a limited theatrical release on Jun. 17th and then VOD on Aug. 2nd.

With the impending release dates, a brand new trailer, that’s even more mischievously fun than the first one. Penelope Cruz plays an ambitiously arthouse director that pits a similarly respected actor played by Oscar Martínez with a wildly popular, blockbuster actor played by real life superstar Antonio Banderas. The colliding egos make for something that might be this year’s version of The Square. Oh yeah, the celebrated and decorated Penelope Cruz does a pretty good floss as well, in case that what’s you needed to sell you on seeing Official Competition.

See all this for yourself here.

Pick of the Day: FRIENDLY HOUSE LA Comedy Benefit (in LA) 7/16

June 9, 2022
News
atsuko okatsuka, beth lapides, fonda theatre, friendly house la, gina yashere, kathy griffin, los angeles comedy, rosie o'donnell
If the CA primary election this week was any indication, there is a lot more work we’ll need to do for those in need, especially in LA. It’ll be organizations like Friendly House LA that offer “a safe, structured and supportive home-like environment that fosters recovery for women seeking recovery from alcohol and other substance abuse disorders,” that will pick up the crucial slack that either the LA city or county government might not be picking up.
As such, Rosie O’Donnell is putting on a big comedy benefit for Friendly House LA at The Fonda Theater on Sat. Jul. 16th at 8:30PM PT with a stellar line-up of Atsuko Okatsuka, Beth Lapides, Gina Yashere, and Kathy Griffin. Honestly, you might not see this particular collection of great female comedians crossing several generations ever again (i.e. don’t miss out). Tickets are on sale starting at $80 and you can (and should) go snag them here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 115: Nicole Blaine & Building Comedy in an Art Colony

June 8, 2022
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
comedy theater, deadpool, late late show, los angeles comedy, nicole blaine, santa monica, the crow

While the reverberations of the pandemic are still being felt and both the commercial and artistic sides of comedy have been changed forever, there is hope springing eternal in new venues that have blossomed.

Thanks to the blood, sweat, tears, and compassion of one Nicole Blaine, a longtime producer and comedian, her club, The Crow, represents a new oasis for comedy in a veritable comedy desert  on the Westside of LA (both the county and the city) relative to LA’s thriving Eastside. We talk to her about establishing a comedy club in the now, in an artist colony, hand built chairs, and, of course, free Santa Monica parking.

Pick of the Day: The Lesbian Agenda with Sophie Santos (in NYC & LA) 6/13 & 6/28

Before even acknowledging that its Pride Month, any time of the year is a great time of year to catch Sophie Santos‘ quest for queer dominance via her creation, The Lesbian Agenda. That said, it’s Pride and it’s an especially good time to go support great queer artists of every background, especially when it comes to live comedy.

The Lesbian Agenda has already taken over both coasts by firmly planting roots in NYC and LA, which is a pretty great start to cultural domination in the U.S.

In fact, there are upcoming dates for both cities with The Lesbian Agenda taking over The Bell House in Brooklyn on Mon. Jun. 13th and Dynasty Typewriter in LA on Tues. Jun. 28th, both at 7:30PM local time. Both have incredibly stacked, festival-worthy line-ups including:

Pick of the Day: Rape Victims Are Horny Too Album Taping (in NYC) 6/24 & 6/25

June 7, 2022
News
album taping, Dylan Adler, kelly bachman, musical comedy, nyc comedy

It’s pretty clear at this point that Kelly Bachman and Dylan Adler have carved out their place in the NYC comedy scene for their hilarity through daring vulnerability (also, you might know/have seen Dylan do a standing backflip and Kelly call out monster Harvey Weinstein to his face). They carry on the torch of truth in comedy to new frontiers, especially with the show they wrote and perform together, Rape Victims Are Horny Too.

There is no subterfuge to that title. Kelly and Dylan are both rape survivors and have, as an act of healing and holding up a beacon for other survivors to not feel alone, have written a very, very funny musical about that part of their lives. They’ve honed the show over the years and are going to put the show officially on wax with a live album taping this month. Undoubtedly, this will be a great addition to bold comedy specials cut from similar cloth including Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette and Cameron Esposito’s Rape Jokes.

There are two tapings of Rape Victims Are Horny Too at the Lower East Side’s Caveat on Fri. Jun. 24th & Sat. Jun. 25th at 9:30PM ET. Tickets are $15 and you best go get them now.

Pick of the Day: Greg Barris Deep Healing Taping (in LA) 6/11

June 6, 2022
News
album taping, deep healing, glendale, greg barris, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy
Whenever AST Records and Greg Barris are recording something, you need to go. Barris, ever clever, but always-in-tune-with-his-spirtual-side comedian/raconteur is, of course, aiming for something higher than just a new hour of stand-up.
Greg is calling this latest show DEEP HEALING and is considering it an “extreme act of audience participation”, which, for the lack of human connection we all suffered over the last two years, sounds pretty swell. Whatever Greg has up his sleeve for any and all that attend the very intimate taping at The Glendale Room this coming Saturday, June 11th at 8PM PT, we’re sure it will be transformative/leave you in stitches, only the metaphorical kind, at the same time.
Tickets are $15 right now and you better go snag them here (space is limited)

Rejoice in Your First Look at Season 4 of What We Do in the Shadows and Its Pickup of Seasons 5 & 6

June 6, 2022
News
fx, renewed, season 4, what we do in the shadows

What We Do In The Shadows remains one of the funniest comedies on television, especially for how much it was glorious salve during the thick of quarantine. Its lack of awards recognition is a great reflection on how much politicking goes on during awards season (it kind of should be winning everything, FYI).

Thankfully, there’s a chance for all that to change as FX in a very shrewd, wise move opted to pick up What We Do In The Shadows for seasons 5 and 6. Given how imaginative the entire writing staff has gotten with the first three seasons while also managing to both grow Guillermo, Nadia, Colin Robinson, Nandor, and Laszlo and keep the integrity and humor of the series intact, we have full faith in them not hitting a slump.

You can see that season 4, due to premiere on Jul. 12th on FX and Hulu after that, is already going to be a hoot with baby Colin Robinson with the first official teaser here.

The Elysian Is Throwing Its First Festival (and Is Now Taking Submissions)

June 3, 2022
News
comedy festival, elysian theater, experimental comedy, los angeles, los angeles comedy, open call, open submissions, underrepresented

In under a year’s time, The Elysian has made waves in the LA comedy scene and has become a hub for so many weird and wonderful folks that were scattered to the many winds of comedy when 2020 reared its grotesque head.

Now, they’re making another big mark on the scene by throwing their very own festival that will specifically “serve as a springboard for underrepresented creators and unusual work.” The Elysian’s First Festival will happen over ten nights from Oct. 20th-30th and is really open to lots of wild ideas, even if they’re not strictly comedy.

If you get picked, you’ll get a very nice neat package to help you develop the sweet idea you had for the festival including:

– A night at the Elysian
– A $500 production stipend
– Creative development support through a mentor from the Elysian community
– Promotional support, including headshots, graphic design support, and a professional recording of your show
– Tech support, including a full three hour tech rehearsal
– Free admission to the other shows in the festival
– Some kinda Fest swag

The deadline is Mon. Jun. 20th at midnight PT and you can potentially be part of the Elysian’s First Festival by submitting here.

Pick of the Day: Joel Kim Booster Residency (in LA) 6/13 & 6/20

June 3, 2022
News
elysian, joel kim booster, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

In case you weren’t aware, Joel Kim Booster is having a moment right now. His movie Fire Island is debuting on Hulu today, but you might have also alongside Maya Rudolph in the new trailer for Loot amongst other delightful roles he’s popped up in over the last couple of years. Also, his stand-up is as shrewdly sharp as it has ever been (especially when it comes to sexual and adoptee identity). That’s great news considering that Fire Island had started off at the ill-fated Quibi.

With all of that in mind, you absolutely should go see Joel live ASAP. If you’re in LA, there are two dates left on his residency at The Elysian on Mon. Jun. 13th & 20th at 7:30PM PT. Tickets are $20 and you better get them while you still can here.

Please, Please Enjoy Jes Tom’s Comedy Central Featuring Set

June 2, 2022
News
comedy central, jes tom, stand up comedy

June is, as you should know, Pride, and, as such, you’ll be seeing a pretty fair share of queer comedians on plenty of networks and streaming platforms. Many of those comedians you should be watching, falling in love with, and following whatever they’re doing no matter the time of year.

One of those comics is Jes Tom. Jes is one of the most whipsmart comedians on any stage today with a wealth of sharp observations and stories about gender and sex that are both forward thinking and yet so damn funny. Just see for yourself in their latest set on Comedy Central’s digital stand-up series, Featuring, here.

Then, as we said earlier, follow everything they do @jesthekid on IG.

Pick of the Day: Stand Ups For Ukraine! (in LA) 6/5

June 2, 2022
News
Andrey Belikov, atsuko okatsuka, Carol Leifer, charity benefit, chris porter, craig robinson, Dan Kinno, kira soltanovich, los angeles comedy, nova ukraine, todd glass, ukraine, ukraine war, zainab johnson

Over 3 months ago, an unprovoked, yet hostile Russia invaded the sovereign nation of Ukraine and have subjected the people of Ukraine to an untold amount of death, destruction, and senseless havoc. Ukrainians have valiantly stood their ground and defied any initial expectations of Russia steamrolling through their country.

That said, Putin is still pushing on with his efforts and, thusly, Ukraine needs all the aid that it can get in any way that it can. That’s why you can and should support Nova Ukraine, an org providing emergency humanitarian aid and relief to those in need in Ukraine’s borders, by going to the Hollywood Improv this Sunday, Jun. 5th at 7PM PT for Stand Ups for Ukraine.

All proceeds from the show will be going to Nova Ukraine on top of the fact that you’ll get to see a superb LA comedy line-up in Craig Robinson, Kira Soltanovich, Atsuko Okatsuka, Chris Porter, Todd Glass, Zainab Johnson, Carol Leifer, Dan Kinno, Andrey Belikov.

Tickets are $25 (plus 2 item min.) and you can (and should) get tickets here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 114: Avry Ross & Getting an Open Mic with Audience in LA at Midnight

June 1, 2022
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
avry ross, los angeles comedy, midnight madness, open mic comedy, third wheel

One of the key things in running an actually great open mic is consistency. Well, having a proper stage in a proper venue, great sound system, actual staff, drinks and snacks, not charging to go up, and audience helps too.

Avry Ross and the rest of the good folks at Third Wheel Hollywood/Podcast Studio have actually done all of that and do it on a nightly basis at midnight with what has been coined Midnight Madness. This week’s TCB Field Report has Avry giving us the origins and rise of what is the last (and often the best) stop for open mic’ers largely because there are real audience members sitting in with the dozens of comics waiting to go up (a phenomenon we had, years ago, just accepted doesn’t happen at open mics).

Also, “hot” takes on Norm MacDonald’s new special, horror comedy, and Amazon’s gay rom com.

Pick of the Day: Pitch A Movie: The Show Where Comedians Make Up Movies on the Fly! (in NYC) 6/11

June 1, 2022
News
brittany carney, brooklyn, clare o'kane, cobra club, dave ross, midnight gardeneners league, mike hanford, nyc comedy, pitch a movie

Top Gun: Maverick just broke box office records (and probably will continue to do so) further encouraging studios to not take on anything original or hear fresh pitches. In fact, if you’re wondering how or when you’d see any new releases that are truly original or out of the box at your local movie theater, there’s not a real great answer for that.

With that in mind, DC’s only comedy secret society, The Midnight Gardeners League, has come up with a show where you’ll get to hear such originality as it’ll showcase great comedians pitching jokes off of their material only to be judged by a “renowned film auteur”. This first NYC outing will feature what we’re sure will be blockbuster movie pitches from a grand line-up of Brittany Carney, Mike Hanford, Clare O’Kane, and Dave Ross.

Mark down Sat. Jun. 11th at 8PM ET to be at Brooklyn’s Cobra Club to hear things that should very likely be greenlit rather than be subjected to more mandatory MCU offerings.

Tickets are $10 and you can (and should) get them here.

Norm MacDonald’s Last Special Showed That He Could Pull Off Virtual Comedy Because, Well, He’s Norm MacDonald

May 31, 2022
News
netflix, norm macdonald, nothing special

Pretty much no one will challenge that Norm MacDonald is one of the actual legends of comedy, an icon of the art form that was almost revered across the board for not only how unflinchingly funny he was, but how he seemed to have a mastery of balancing several layers of irony at the same time through every facet of his writing and performance. His last special Nothing Special, that debuted on Netflix this week, is a testament to this notion even though it is more of an artifact left behind in a living will as opposed to a traditional hour long comedy special.

Partially because of COVID-19 and partially due to his declining health, Norm saw some sort of writing on the wall and felt the need to have his latest hour, that would unfortunately be his last, recorded in some fashion. Norm’s death did sadly come to pass and thus we got a bit of a peek behind his curtain with Nothing Special.

Like millions of comedians tried once and only a few soldiered through, he did an entirely front facing camera comedy special, but, as Dave Chappelle attests in a panel discussion following Norm’s hour, “he landed the trick.” Performing with no live audience is almost antithetical to the idea of stand-up comedy, though that is what was pretty much afforded for comedians for the majority of lockdown. It takes such great writing and charisma and delivery and so many other things to remain engaging and hysterical with a live audience, but it’s a whole other ball game when you there are no laughs to play off of and you’re alone in your home office, not to mention the specter of death murmuring in the background.

Still, Norm is such a paragon comedian that he performed an hour with headphones on while seated in front of a computer and was the same old Norm that we’ve known and loved all those years. Nothing Special felt like Conan or Letterman just let him go really long on panel and everyone was fine with it. Every joke, aside, tangent was delivered with as much gusto as Norm has ever had and there isn’t a single second that he doesn’t sell with his impeccably offbeat timing that we don’t wholeheartedly buy.

As mentioned above, there is a panel discussion of Norm’s Nothing Special following the actual hour that actually features David Letterman and Conan O’Brien as well as David Spade, Dave Chappelle, Molly Shannon, and Adam Sandler as a lasting sort of tribute to Norm’s memory. One of the more fascinating points is brought up by Conan who describes Norm’s comedy as not needing for you to be there, but, instead it being a treat for any and all to take part in MacDonald’s superb tomfoolery.

You can and should go watch Norm MacDonald’s Nothing Special, now streaming on Netflix.

Pick of the Day: Danny Jolles Films His Second Comedy Special (in LA) 6/4

May 31, 2022
News
danny jolles, dynasty typewriter, live taping, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

It was a rarity, but there were really great comedy specials that came out during the thick of the pandemic. One of those specials was Danny Jolles’ 6 Parts. It wasn’t only us that was saying that. Both Paste Magazine and The New York Times picked it as one of their favorite specials last year.

So, with that in mind, we don’t think you will want to miss Jolles and Don’t Tell Comedy doing another hour special this weekend on Sat. Jun. 4th. This time, Danny will be getting to sharing his wonderfully crafted comedy offerings to us all on a proper stage, the grand Dynasty Typewriter (as opposed to a surf shop, art store, etc.).

There will be an early and late show, at 7PM PT & 9:30PM, and tickets are going for $15 right now. Go get them ASAP here and here, respectively.

Pick of the Day: Dishoom Dishoom: A Bollywood Action Comedy Show (in LA) 6/9

May 27, 2022
News
dishoom dishoom, meghana indurti, mike falzone, milan patel, neeraj srinivasan

While How Did This Get Made? and MST3K have a lot of loud American cinema covered with their comedic riffing, there’s not as much love given in the same regard to international cinema, despite there being plenty of source material. Nearly every Jackie Chan movie in the 90s (especially the ones from China) would be well worth a riff fest.

So, cue in the new live riff fest, Dishoom Dishoom, that will be digging into India’s biggest movie for 2022 RRR, directed S. S. Rajamouli, which might have more ridiculous action sequences than several Nicholas Cage movies. They’ll assemble some of LA’s funniest to watch and see what they can make of a guy kicking a motorcycle to stop it and then catch it while in mid-air amongst other ludicrous slow motion action packed sequences. This month, Meghana Indurti and Mike Falzone will be joining Milan Patel and Neeraj Srinivasan in the internationally flavored ludicrous watch-along.

See just how wild RRR gets with the trailer here.

All of this will be happening at Echo Park’s newest VHS store, Whammy Analog Media on Thurs. Jun. 9th at 8PM PT. Tickets are $10 and you really ought to go snag them here right now (as space is limited).

For Those Who Have a Complicated Relationship Dead Parents (or Love Dramedy), Enjoy the Trailer for “My Dead Dad”

May 26, 2022
News
fabio frey, hbo max, my dead dad, pedro correa, trailer

HBO Max has made a lot of head way since its inception, especially in the realm of dramedy. Hacks has rightfully earned itself acclaim and awards and has been a very shiny part of the HBO Max brand and now, they’re continuing to make way with My Dead Dad from Pedro Correa, which they picked up off the festival circuit.

There’s not a lot of mystery behind the title as the film follows the aftermath of an estranged father’s death and everything a rudderless son has to figure out. Pedro Correa co-wrote and stars in My Dead Dad and has Fabio Frey directing and seems to have come up with that might be a bit bleaker than Beginners, but still sharply funny and heart wrenching all the same.

Take a gander for yourself with the official trailer here, then look for it on HBO Max come Wed. Jun. 1st.

Pick of the Day: Tim Platt Presents a Night of Wedding Speeches (in NYC) 6/3

Wedding season is upon us and, despite everything, we’re pretty sure that most folks that put their wedding on hold because of COVID-19 are now getting hitched this year (even though COVID-19 hasn’t been eradicated).

As such, you shouldn’t miss the show dedicated to one of the major cornerstones of any wedding, the speeches. The endlessly imaginative Tim Platt started putting together a very special evening of wedding speeches delivered to a comedy couple by a bunch of comedians, sometimes in character and sometimes not, and it’s more fun than nearly every wedding we’ve ever been witness to.

Tim’s latest edition of A Night of Wedding Speeches will be happening at Brooklyn Comedy Collective on Fri. Jun. 3rd at 8:30PM ET with an astounding wedding party of Joe Castle Baker, Eudora Peterson, Ike Ufomadu, Sarah Wilson, Karolena Theresa, Peter Mills Weiss, real life married comedy couple Alise Morales & Danny Groh, and, of course, Best Man Tim Platt.

The prospect of doing your first nationwide tour as a comedian is as thrilling as it can be daunting. So much of it is a mystery that you can’t really prepare for ahead of time. That said, to actually play to folks that specifically came to see you across the country is part of the electrifying feeling of doing comedy that makes up for all the other numerous hardships you go through in trying to make a living through comedy.

Cara Connors just embarked on a successful first run across the U.S. and is actually extending her Straight For Pay tour with additional dates. Connors talks us through the whirlwind you’re required to go through when on your first tour as well as her feelings on where she fits in as a comedian that is queer and the ever changing landscape of what might be one of the more fluid art forms out there.

A&E Set to Debut Two Part Black Comedy History Doc “Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution”

Undeniably, there is a wave of documentaries examining the history of comedy from every possible angle and at every degree. From covering individuals such as Dick Gregory, George Carlin, and even Bill Cosby to focusing on such changing attitudes in the form through the lens of 9/11 with Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11, there is an ever growing fascination of the inner workings of inciting laughter.

A&E is putting their hat in the ring here with Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat & Time Studios’ Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution, a two-part doc series that will trace the lineage of black comedians that defied racial barriers and sought to skewer the absurd inequalities that were just taken for granted, especially the ones based off the amount of melanin you had in your skin.

The likes of Tiffany Haddish, W. Kamau Bell, Michael Che, Steve Harvey, Sherri Shepherd, Wayne Brady, Aisha Tyler, DL Hughley, Amber Ruffin, and Katt Williams amongst other comics and historians will weigh in on the oft-overlooked milestones of black comedy (just compare Mike Binder’s The Comedy Store to Phat Tuesdays: The Hip Hop Era of Comedy).

Take a gander at what’s to come with this teaser for Right to Offend here, then look for its premiere on A&E on Jun. 29th & 30th at 9PM (then presumably streaming on aetv.com afterwards).

We often remember and eulogize George Carlin not only as a comedy legend, but a philosopher, a truth teller, the sort of comedian that was the epitome of speaking truth to power. Yet, his role as the artist often gets lost in the scrum of folks quoting his disturbingly, still-applicable punchlines.

Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio’s masterful two-part documentary, George Carlin’s American Dream, on one of the definitive comedy legends, does its due diligence on the life and times of George Carlin, but it also examines him as the comedian artist, someone who redefined himself so much and influenced so much of comedy, time and time again that he and his staggering body of work will be timeless.

You can find numerous tellings of the narrative of George Carlin, but dissecting his career like one would The Beatles or Miles Davis (both name checked in the doc in comparison to Carlin) hasn’t really been done in such a fashion that Apatow and Bonfiglio have. Throughout the exhaustive amount of footage of George both on and off stage, not to mention hand written notes and interview clips with his wife, daughter, brother, and closest friends, there is a through line that George soldiered on to continually find his voice.

You often hear that “finding your voice” being one of the primary goals of any comedic performer in a way that suggests a journey with a beginning, middle, and end. George Carlin’s American Dream rediscovers that so-called finding your voice as an ongoing process, the ever-reliable spark that fueled Carlin to do his iconic bits about the seven words you can’t say on television or abortion or rights or, well… you probably can make your own list at this point.

Many comedians, unfortunately, give up that artistic flame when they reach a certain level of acclaim and comfort. Despite massive success throughout his decades in comedy, Carlin never saw himself done and that is the true artist in him. Had he lived to today, we’re sure that he’d survey the landscape of Marc Maron, Hannah Gadsby, Jim Jefferies, Dave Chappelle, and more and come up some entirely different and brilliant that would kick off a whole other movement in comedy.

The role and purpose of a comedian, whether as an artist, entertainer, or both, will forever be debated. The capital “T” truth of the matter that is that a whole spectrum of comedians will fill in all these roles from truth tellers to abject clowns to consummate entertainers to philosopher kings. George Carlin’s American Dream actually shows how, in rare cases, a comedian can be all of them in one.

You should absolutely go watch George Carlin’s American Dream right now as it’s streaming on HBO Max.
