To Ensure Yet Another Great Late Night Interview, Nathan Fielder Brings Susan Sarandon as a Back-Up Guest on Conan

October 31, 2017
Uncategorized
conan, late night, nathan fielder, susan sarandon

Once again, Nathan Fielder exquisitely “games” the format of the traditional late night talk show panel interview by having Susan Sarandon on deck in case his stories are boring.

Of course, Fielder is simultaneously in on the joke while also playing like he “didn’t know” what might might end up happening as is his trademark style at this point.

Please enjoy the whole interview here.

Despite what Nathan says, he has proven that he is actually a great late night talk show guest, albeit a very untraditional one. Needless to say, Nathan Fielder would probably fare pretty well on Talk Show the Game Show.

Roy actually lost his voice, but didn’t back out. The raspy tone actually gives many of his set-ups a little more gravitas, making for a fascinating and sharp Radio and Television Correspondents Dinner address (think of it as the JV squad to the White House Correspondents Dinner).

Watch Roy’s whole address here.

Playing House Will Not Return for Season 4

Unfortunately, Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair will not get to continue on with Playing House on USA Network.

We have no doubt that the duo will return in another form for another great show (if you watched Playing House, you’d probably agree with the sentiment).

Here’s a video of Lennon and Jessica saying farewell.

Please Go Watch “The Square” and Enjoy a Spectacular Takedown of Modern Art Pretension

Swedish writer/director Ruben Östlund seems to enjoy thematically subverting outdated notions of privilege in his films and we love him for it.

In Force Majeure, masculinity got a great send-up. In his latest film, The Square, the often pretentious modern and contemporary art world teeming with so much self-importance that it forgets about what it’s trying to say gets a similar treatment from Östlund.

Even though it’s a laugh-out loud satire that often follows Murphy’s Law, The Square landed the coveted Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Comedy isn’t often honored at such high levels of merit in the film world, but Östlund earns it with making this movie as exquisite in its mise-en-scene as it is unflinching in its indictment of high class snobbery stemming from the very insular art world with pitch perfect performances from Claes Bang, Elisabeth Moss, and the guy playing the artist playing the primate, Terry Notary.

We highly urge you to see it as its currently in limited release and will be expanding to more theaters in the coming weeks. Find a showtime, release date for a theater near you here.

CBS Gets a Bit Edgy with “No Activity” from Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Funny or Die

This uncensored trailer for No Activity, which will be a marquee series of CBS streaming platform, CBS All Access, is decidedly (and thankfully) against type for the broadcast network.

Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Funny or Die along with the cavalcade of your favorite comedy stars (Tim Meadows, Jason Mantzoukas, Arturo Castro,  Bridget Everett, Amy Sedaris, etc.) explore what happens in the downtime of detectives and criminals (i.e. the countless hours spent waiting for something to happen).

Of course, such downtime leaves room for plenty of decidedly non-professional police or criminal syndicate behavior. See for yourself in the trailer here.

No Activity debuts on CBS All Access on November 12th.

Morgan Murphy Father-Son Comedy Gets a Script Commitment Plus Penalty at Fox

In uplifting comedy news, great comedian and writer Morgan Murphy has a multi-cam sitcom that’s in the works at Fox. It’s “…set in the world’s most colorful bar in Mexico. When a man moves back to his hometown and opens his dream business, he is dismayed when his rudderless adult son follows him and he realizes his parenting days aren’t over.”

Beyond the premise of the series, we’re glad to hear that Morgan’s sense of humor might be getting its very own broadcast network TV show.

Screen Junkies Address Firing of Andy Signore on Sexual Harassment and Assault Allegations and How They’ll Be Moving Forward

Whether you’re a frequent TCB reader or not, you’re probably aware of Honest Trailers, the oft-celebrated, hugely popular parody web series run by Screen Junkies. Beyond Honest Trailers, Screen Junkies itself has become an online destination for a very fun, specific brand of movie/TV based humor and discussion through several different series and web videos they produce on a regular basis.

Recently, Andy Signore, who created both Screen Junkies and Honest Trailers, was fired after several allegations of sexual harassment and assault were made by women who came forward like many women who have come forward to take down Harvey Weinstein and men like him over the last several weeks.

The staff at Screen Junkies took some time off, understandably so, to take necessary action following Andy’s firing and discuss how they want to move forward with Screen Junkies sans Andy in making it better, safer, more inclusive, and less divisive.

Here’s an address from Screen Junkies’ Dan Murrell, Roth Cornet, Spencer Gilbert, Joe Starr, and Hal Rudnick.

CBS Diversity Sketch Comedy Showcase Director Rick Najera Resigns After Harassment Allegations

Every day since Harvey Weinstein’s sexual harassment, abuse, assault, and rape claims got a deservingly harsh light shone on them, it seems Hollywood has been cleaning house, corner by corner.

Unfortunately, every corner seems to need thorough cleaning.

Yesterday, CBS made a statement that they have investigated claims of the man responsible for the CBS Diversity Comedy Showcase (a program that many comedians around the country, but especially in LA, work very hard to get in on) Rick Najera harassing performers of said showcase.

Since this has become public, as stated above, Najera has resigned.

What will happen with the CBS Diversity Comedy Showcase going forward and who will run it has yet to be announced, but we’ll keep you in the loop as more details emerge.

Interestingly, all of these comedians have done specials. A few of them have even done entire hour comedy specials on television already and are now doing half-hour specials on Netflix.

As the streaming service giant wheels and deals in Seinfelds, Rocks, and Chappelles, it’s pretty clear that Netflix has reorganized the pecking order in who gets what when it comes to their comedy specials.

Rest assured, the talent is clearly stacked here with Aparna, Kinane, Feinstein, Morin, Yashere, and List and you ought to go to the tapings happening on Sunday, November 5th and Monday, November 6th at Globe Theater in DTLA (RSVP for free tickets here).

The way that Desus & Mero run their show on Viceland allows that to rip on trending topics and current issues in a more instinctual, organic way than most of the rest of late night.

One of YouTube Red’s comedy series that isn’t coming from a YouTube star is Rob Huebel’s Do You Want To See a Dead Body?

Well, it’s more like Do You Want To See a Dead Body? 2.0 as it’s getting fleshed out into an entire series from two Funny or Die videos from a few years ago.

In any case, Huebel doesn’t waste the opportunity to get as ridiculous as possible with the premise of the title. See for yourself in the trailer.

Look for episodes to start streaming on YouTube Red on Wednesday, November 15th.

Nathan Fielder Adds More Layers to His “Real Life Fabricated Late Night Story” by Retelling It to Seth Meyers

October 26, 2017
Uncategorized

Nathan Fielder has actually done a real life, comedy version of Inception on all of us and we’re all laughing the whole way through despite it being a ruse the whole time.

One layer is that Fielder told a great late night story on Kimmel.

Another layer is that he fabricated that story to have an interesting story to tell on a late night talk show.

A layer within that is that he would feel guilty about outright lying about said late night talk show story, so Nathan opted to stage every event in the story to happen to him.

Another layer down from that is Fielder explaining all of that to Seth Meyers and then asking to get more mileage from the story by retelling it, pretty much word-for-word.

Plain and simple, it’s comedic genius at work.

Over the last few weeks, toxic masculinity has had several of its many, many heads lopped off with the unstoppable wave of sexual assault, harassment, and rape charges that have come to light.

One would hope that it’s a sign that “different time back then” is over and will not be tolerated anymore kind of like what happens in this darkly comedic, short film “men” from Jon Daly and Gil Ozeri.

Watch as they play two d-bags who embody toxic masculinity to its core and suffer accordingly here

(note: this is technically NSFW even though the social commentary here is important).
