On December 5th in years past, we’re sure something important that’s tangentially adjacent to a podcast about chain restaurants/late capitalism’s effects on two friends happened somewhere near Brea, CA.

This December 5th, 2018 at approximately 8PM, which is a Wednesday, Nick Wiger and Mike Mitchell will reconvene for what should be another rollicking, wild live episode of the Doughboys podcast, this time at the big Brea Improv. It’s an occasion that no one in the greater LA/OC area should miss.

Tickets are $20 (plus a 2-item minimum) and you can (and very much should) snag them here.

This Next Round of MST3K Will Take on “Mac and Me”

The MST3K crew will have to take on six entire bad, bad, bad movies including the classically bad Mac and Me, used ruthlessly by Paul Rudd whenever on Conan, all the way to the brazen rip off of Pacific Rim even brazenly called Atlantic Rim.

It’s being branded as The Gauntlet of which Jonah and the robots will have to go through and you can get a taste of what’s to come here with this trailer.

Thankfully, all of this is dropping on Thanksgiving day if you need some content to find solace in from forced family gatherings.

39 Comedians You Should and Will Know

As you can see in the byline, we had a hand in making this list happen and feel honored to do so at Vulture.

Sure, we’re a bit biased (though we reached out to all sorts of industry folks in the know on who they thought you should watch out for and compiled a list from them-so maybe not too biased on our end?), but it’s one of the lists of comedians to watch that we think you can really rely on.

Also, there are 21 picks we made, but, as some of them are groups or duos, it added up to 39, FYI.

The clowning company of the Lyric Hyperion is doing their occasional, but always-must-see comedy burlesque show next month!

Amateur Burl-esque-ish has burlesque taken to a divinely silly level or add some sultry spice (and nudity) to clowning. No matter how you see it, it’s a damn good time.

This time around, the burl-esque-ish will be:
Christina Catherine Martinez
Chelsea Morgan
Anna Seregina
Lisa McNeely
Sam Fishman
John Norris
Gemma Soldati

Amateur Burl-esque-ish will be on Saturday, December 1st at 10PM. Tickets are only $10 (and it is 18+). Go get your tickets quick here.

Watch Katie Nolan Break the Guinness World Record for Stacking Donuts While Blindfolded

The intersection of sports and comedy has been tricky thing to figure out and few, in our opinion, have done that consistently well.

One of those people is Katie Nolan. We really dug her previous show Garbage Time over at FS1 and definitely are thrilled to hear her show on ESPN+, Always Late with Katie Nolan is now up and running and back to doing things like trying to break a very obscure Guinness World Record in the niche category of stacking things.

Also, if you do dig this, you should subscribe to her podcast Sports?, which, for our money, have the most fun ad reads in the biz.

In general, just hop on board to whatever Katie Nolan’s doing.

This is definitely one of those instances where truth is stranger (and possibly more delightful?) than fiction.

Jess Salomon and Eman El-Husseini are both very funny comedians based out of NYC that just happen to be Jewish and Palestinian, respectively, and married to each other. That alone could be a pitch for a TV show.

For now, you can enjoy their story in the comic strip The El Salomons on Instagram wonderfully illustrated by Jesse Brown. We will not be surprised one bit if this becomes an actual cartoon series somewhere in the near future.

It’s been a minute since the last time this happened and thus, this meeting of Dumb Pepole Town podcast live at Largo on Monday, Dec. 10th at 8:30PM might be the comedy event of the holiday season.

The Sklar Brothers, Daniel Van Kirk, and special guest Will Forte (pretty nice get, right?) will not only go over the crème de la crème of dumb stories from around the world, but will also get the stories shared live in person from townies in the crowd.

Tickets are still available at $35 a pop and you can (and very much should) treat yourself for the holidays by getting them here.

Few are as equipped as Wayne Federman to discuss the history of comedy, especially stand-up, as Wayne is not only meticulously studied on the topic and a current professor of stand-up at the University of Southern California, but he has been a very funny, ever-evolving comedian for many decades.

His and Andrew Steven’s podcast mini-series The History of Standup on Podglomerate thus is a handy guide through how stand-up has developed rapidly as an art form even though it’s much younger than most other art forms, especially of the live variety.

Wayne and Andrew will be doing a special live ep. of The History of Standup with a TBA special guest at Dynasty Typewriter at Hayworth Theater next Sunday, Nov. 18th at 2PM.

Fans, nerds, and even those just merely curious of stand-up comedy might want to get into this. Tickets are $15 and you can go get them here.

For several years, a much sought after milestone for comedians was getting the title of being a Just For Laughs Montreal New Face. Though it’s a list intended largely for industry types, it has been established as a marker for who to watch out for, especially with stand-up.

Thus, comics compete intensely for the limited number of slots they hand out every year up in Montreal for the hope that they can call themselves a New Face whether they ends up being an actual big break or not (even if they’ve had a good amount of exposure and success already).

Inside Jokes follows a handful comics (including folks we really dig such as Simon Gibson, MK Paulsen, Rosebud Baker, and Robert Dean) on this journey and you can get a taste of it right here. It premieres on Amazon Prime starting on Fri., Nov. 30th.

Oh, if you want a spoiler to how ends up getting to be a New Face, here’s the list for your convenience.

This will be a ticketed event, so you’ll have a more surefire chance to catch it as opposed to hoping that you showed up over an hour before to guarantee a seat.

To be a comedian that often delves into blue material and wheels and deals in extremely clever wordplay and misdirection and make it all work for audiences in 2018 is a very tall order.

Yet, Louis Katz delivers another hour with Katzkills that gets bawdy and arcane and even downright silly in his very well constructed bits from wire to wire. Katz’s unwavering confidence and delivery sweetens every punchline making for a very, very fun listen.

You can get Katzkills now from 800 Pound Gorilla Records wherever and however you listen to comedy albums here.

This month, the brilliant Emily Heller does indeed have a new album coming out this month from Kill Rock Stars, entitled Pasta.

Here’s a small, but great sampling, in video form no less, of how sharp, colorful, genuine, expressive, and funny Emily can be as a comedian within a single bit. It is a joke about life under the Trump Administration that was written and honed well before yesterday’s midterm elections, but still rings true at this very moment.

Emily Heller’s Pasta officially drops on Nov. 19th, but you can pre-order it now over at Kill Rock Stars.

For 10 years, every Thursday, Josh Haness and Josh Weinstein have been holding down one of the best stand-up showcases in LA, appropriately called The Josh & Josh Show. Held in the back room of Bar Lubitsch, the nice and tight line-up always made for a damn fine night of stand-up in WeHo.

Unfortunately, The Joshes have decided to end their decade run at Lubitsch next Thursday leaving this Thursday and 11/15 left for you to catch their show (a thing we highly urge you to do, especially since it’s FREE w/no drink minimum or maximum).

Tomorrow, they’ve got a stacked line-up of Joe DeRosa, Kara Klenk, Jared Logan, Kurt Braunohler, Eddie Della Siepe, and Ian Karmel.

So, come to the lovely Bar Lubitsch this Thursday and/or next to pay your respects, enjoy The Josh & Josh Show’s swan song, and, of course, watch some great stand-up.

Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus to Star and Nat Faxon and Jim Rash Set to Direct in Remake of Force Majeure at Fox Searchlight

In 2014, Ruben Östlund’s Force Majeure made waves as a foreign comedy, deservedly getting awards nominations and wins when foreign comedies so rarely get into such consideration.

Fox Searchlight has a remake of Östlund’s masterpiece in the works and has lined-up an impressive cast and directing duo. Still, a combination of Ferrell, Louis-Dreyfus, Faxon, and Rash makes a little curious as to how much this remake, now titled Downhill, will resemble the European original or be a much more broad comedy. Perhaps, the Oscar winning pedigree of Nat Faxon and Jim Rash from The Descendants will come through here.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

In the meantime, please enjoy the trailer for Force Majeure here (and then go see it however you can).

The well worn rom com trope of “will-they-or-won’t-they” has gotten a fresh and gritty update from You’re the Worst for four seasons. In fact, the series is ingeniously set up for Jimmy and Gretchen (as well as anyone else in the series) to possibly not live happily ever after, but still be plenty of fun the whole way through.

The trailer for the fifth and final season rides that tension even further.

Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait until January 9th when this season premieres on FXx to even begin to see what really lies in store.

While the news cycle make the perception of time distorted where two years ago might seem like a long, long, long time ago (JGLG premiered Oct. 2016), Jon Glaser Loves Gear’s 2nd season is finally just around the corner.

The guide to “gear” show/meta comedy made our annual year end list and we couldn’t wait to see how Jon’s obsession with gadgetry takes a dark toll on his personal life would play out in a second season. From the looks of the trailer, it seems like season 2 will not disappoint.

With a season 2 premiere date of January 9th on TruTV, this might be the first great thing in comedy in 2019.

Phil Burgers never ceases to surprise, even if you think you know what his game is. A perennial favorite at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a star in clowning/idiot, the owner and AD at beloved LA venue Lyric Hyperion, and one of those sorts talents that can and very often take moments from 0-60 comedically in an instant.

Thus is the case with this short film The Passage, created by Burgers and directed by Kitao Sakurai. It could be thought of a postmodern execution of the silent comedy very much keeps the silly, absurd spirit of the classical silent, physical comedy from almost a century ago.

Also, this is one of the last things produced by the revived Super Deluxe and thankfully lives on courtesy of TBS.

Oh, if you don’t know about Jetzo, we think this might be a nice little intro to one of our current favorite comedy duos working today.

So, without further adieu, please enjoy The Passage here.

If you’re in LA, you can come to a special release party/Q&A at the Lyric Hyperion at 10PM. Admission is free!
