Both Funny or Die and The Onion Inc. Are Being Evaluated For Potential Sale

November 15, 2014
Uncategorized
funny or die, the onion

(via Bloomberg)

Just this week, it’s been reported that the ubiquitous comedy brands of Funny or Die and The Onion, along with their offshoots of The A.V. Club and Clickhole, have had financial advisors evaluate their worth for a potential sale.

While certainly both Funny or Die and The Onion have had enough success to garner a nice price tag, it’s unclear what exactly will happen if someone does buy out or into either of them.

Perhaps, both companies feel like they can reach further with whatever they want to accomplish being part of a bigger whole or having more capital in general to work with similar to the way Nerdist, Red Hour, and Smart Girls at the Party were acquired by Legendary.  However, part, if only a small sliver, of the autonomy that has gotten them to where they are today would surely be sacrificed in a sale.

While nothing is decided and many of the details are still private, where Funny or Die and The Onion have gotten based off of respectively making funny web videos and satirical news headlines is pretty amazing.

Following his self-released book “You’ll Be Perfect When You’re Dead”, showrunner, writer, producer, podcaster, mastermind Dan Harmon is coming out with a second book that will be, this time, released via the publishers at Doubleday.

It’s set to be another collection of the thoughts and musings of Harmon, which we’re completely on board for and cannot wait for it to come out in 2016.

Emojis are already taking communication back to a time where it was harder to understand each other. So, with that in mind, why not make that communication even harder and more artisanal with Nick Offerman’s painstakingly hand crafted Wood Emojis?

Yes, they are actually wooden emoji symbols that you would have to actually carry.

So, watch the commercial that aired during Conan here and keep hoping that they’ll be actually selling them at Offerman’s real life woodshop beyond them existing for this Conan bit here.

Moses Storm’s “Modern Millennial” Is Now on a Boat

The wonderful live performance art installation, Modern Millennial, that Moses Storm put on a couple of months ago had to unfortunately leave the space that was deep in a sketchy part of the Fashion District in downtown LA due to funding as well as an altercation with the building manager.

Fortunately, Storm has since relocated Modern Millennial to a boat that docks at King Harbor in Redondo Beach. This could potentially be an even more immersive experience than Storm has previously put on since it’s on a boat.

In any case, you should go check it out (according to LA Weekly, the boat docks twice a day) and hope that more art installations had as much fun as Storm does.

Netflix releases its latest stand-up special today with Chelsea Peretti’s “One Of The Greats” shot at The Palace of Fine Arts and directed by Lance Bangs.

If you have to take a break from work in order to watch this, you could always say to people, “Hey, I’m watching One of the Greats” (We’re not sure if Peretti intended the title for that specific instance or not).

Either way, watch it on Netflix here.

John Oliver Fills in Once More for Jon Stewart at The Daily Show

Jon Stewart’s directorial debut with Rosewater opens today and, as you could imagine, he used last night’s episode of The Daily Show to promote it.

With that being the case, Stewart felt it would be tasteless to be also promoting while hosting. So, he was just in luck that one John Oliver, who has had filled in for him before, had just wrapped season one of Last Week Tonight at HBO and was free to fill in.

Watch Oliver sit once more at The Daily Show desk right here.

Key & Peele’s Director, Peter Atencio, Has Just Wrapped His Last Day on Key & Peele

Many of you or, we’re willing to wager, all of you reading this right now probably have become big fans of the show Key & Peele on Comedy Central over their four seasons throughout the last couple of years.

As such, you’re more than acquainted with the shows titular stars Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele, but you should also be familiar with and tip your hat to the show’s director Peter Atencio, who, atypical of almost every TV show in existence, directed every episode of Key & Peele.

Well, last night, Peter Atencio himself announced it was his final day on Key & Peele, which he has left his mark on indelibly. We have yet to hear what Atencio’s next projects are or who will step in for him in the future, but, for now, just go watch a bunch of Key & Peele sketches and appreciate his work.

We’ve made it no secret around here at The Comedy Bureau that one of our favorite things in comedy is Steven Wright chatting with Craig Ferguson. The unique weirdness of each of them melds into something special and, of course, damn funny every single time.

Yet, as Craig is ending his run at The Late Late Show, Wright’s last conversation with Ferguson on the show happened last night and it was just as great as all the other ones they’ve had over the years.

Hopefully, what they have going on here will keep going and maybe turn into “Wright In Conversation with Ferguson” because we most certainly would obsessively watch that.

Watch Craig Ferguson and Steven Wright’s last chat on The Late Late Show here or on CBS.com here starting around 15:34.

New Line’s revival of the “Vacation” franchise already boasts a cast starring Ed Helms and Leslie Mann along with Christina Applegate, Chris Hemsworth, Charlie Day, Keegan Michael-Key, and Regina Hall.

Now, the revitalized Griswold family will have the likes of Tim Heidecker, Nick Kroll, Kaitlin Olson, and Michael Pena joining in the fun as well.

We’re sure this will make for one long, hell of a good trailer whenever that comes out sometime next year.

Yoga, former supermodel, guns, and middle-aged retirement are the subjects for Amazon’s latest comedy pilots, just announced this week.

Down Dog, Salem Rogers, Cocked, and Mad Dogs will be on Amazon for your to vote on in 2015. Names that might interest you in these pilots include Jordan Vogt-Roberts, Leslie Bibb, Steve Zahn, Sam Trammell, Paget Brewster, Andrea Savage, Kris Kristofferson, Billy Zane, Michael Imperioli, Brad Morris, Rachel Dratch, Scott Adsit, Romany Malco, and Jane Kaczmarek.

While there isn’t something perhaps as explicitly poignant as Transparent in this bunch, we’re still excited to see what Amazon has cooked up for this round.

AST Records has made it 3 for 3 this week for debut comedy albums from comedians that makes us bust up laughing. There has been Andy Peters’ Exclamation Mark Question Point and Paul Danke’s DANK.

Streets of Fire, the first album from Barry Rothbart, who you’ve most certainly somewhere on late night between Conan, The Tonight Show, Ferguson, etc., got released of AST’s label and should definitely be on your list of what to listen to that isn’t Serial.

We’d say if you collected all three that you would get a novelty prize item of some sorts, but, honestly, the comedy stylings of this trio should be enough.

While on his Comedy Comisado Tour, Hannibal Buress is trying to make the most of his spare time, which, in this case, happens to be videos for Comedy Comisado TV.

Hannibal started these tour videos off with the first in a long running series,  hopefully, of restaurant reviews. Of course, the way Hannibal does restaurant reviews is the way you would hope Yelp works, but doesn’t.

Watch it here as he throws shade at Lamb’s Creek in Mansfield, PA.

As Carell is promoting it, he stopped at The Daily Show to chat with his old boss Jon Stewart and Stewart is simply flabbergasted at his performance.

From there, the interview, much to our chagrin, turns into fun and games real quick. Watch it all here.

IFC Launches Their Own Hub For Digital Content “Comedy Crib” with UCB and Above Average

Since IFC has really hit its stride over the last few years in their rebranding of their cable network towards comedy with Portlandia, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Maron, and more, they would be remiss if they didn’t have an outlet to regularly produce content online.

So, they fixed that with their new Comedy Crib, which will feature videos and series from the likes of UCB and Above Average.

One such series is Clickbait Overload where UCB challenges their very own to produce a clickbait video in 6 hours from a random topic and genre.

It’s pretty fun. Watch the first episode here and get into the rest of IFC’s Comedy Crib here.

It’s not often you get to hear of non-English language comedies reaching the States that go beyond being light and quirky. However, Israel’s Talya Lavie has got just such a film in “Zero Motivation” that seems like The Office set within an Israeli military HQ excepts its female led both by its cast and its director.

The Tribeca Film Festival definitely took notice of this when they gave it the award for Best Narrative Feature.

Zeitgeist Films has set it for a theatrical release in the next couple of months, but, for now, you can see what we’re talking about in Zero Motivation’s trailer.

Yesterday, you might have heard that Comedy Central has gotten Amazon’s Sarah Babineau to come on board to develop original series on the East Coast.

That move might have something do with the fact that Comedy Central is now losing one of their own execs in Brooke Posch to Amy Poehler’s production company, Paper Kite Productions.

Posch has worked closely with Poehler at Comedy Central, specifically on Broad City and will no doubt help bring up similarly great things via Paper Kite.
