March 30, 2015

So, you’re not going to miss this right?

A stacked line-up of our favorites including Maria Bamford, Baron Vaughn, Joe Wagner, James Austin Johnson, Candice Thompson, and Drennon Davis has just officially got even more stacked for The Comedy Bureau 4 and 5/12th Anniversary.

The fantastic Emily Heller and Karen Kilgariff have been added. Heller will bring her sharp, smart stand-up and Kilgariff will be joining Drennon Davis for some of the best musical comedy around right now.

Again, it’s this Fri. Apr. 3rd at Echoes Under Sunset, doors at 10PM, start at 10:30PM. Don’t miss out like we did on celebrating four years on the actual day we turned four years old!

The “No, You Shut Up!” App Pick Of The Week Is Apparently Always “Ham Horn” and Paul F. Tompkins Can’t Seem To Do Anything About It

March 30, 2015
Uncategorized
ham horn, no you shut up, paul f tompkins, rap air horn

For weeks now, No, You Shut Up! with Paul F. Tompkins has been trying to keep as current as possible by having a segment reviewing apps.

That should be a simple, easy review of a new app every week. It should be…

Something afoot here as Ham Horn, more commonly referred to as Rap Air Horn, keeps getting picked for every single week while Paul as the host finds himself “unable” to do anything about it or “discover” a different, new app.

Is it a 21st comedic version of Sisyphus?

Watch it here and see for yourself.

What Will Meerkat, Periscope, Etc. Do For Comedy?

March 29, 2015
Uncategorized
meerkat, periscope

Chances are that you’ve probably seen the words ‘meerkat’ and ‘periscope’ somewhere in one of your social media or news feeds recently. If you’re wondering, there isn’t a new meme with Timon from The Lion King or some brand new theme park on a submarine.

Meerkat and Periscope are two mobile apps designed for live streaming and broadcasting video. For both audiences/fans and comedians, there is a lot of potential for such technology in so many different ways.

The coming months will only show whether those ways are a net positive or negative.

As an upside, comedy folks of all types can live stream whatever funny thing they’re doing just from their phone. Already you have the likes of Paul Feig, Jim Gaffigan, Judd Apatow, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kevin Hart, and Jimmy Fallon already on Periscope or Meerkat or both.

We’ve even heard of a podcast, Dad Jeans, doing Meerkat broadcasts on top of recording the audio of their podcast for people to download and listen to later.

It won’t be too long before someone uses either app to live stream an entire live comedy show or event. There have been various desktop platforms including methods on YouTube and Dailymotion to live stream shows in the past, but doing so from a mobile device has to potential to be way bigger then all of those.

However, the ease of this live streaming technology presents a new problem for comedians.

Already, using your phone to illegally tape a performance can be an issue at many live shows, making many bigger name performers tense to go to shows where they don’t have complete control of the audience. With Meerkat and Periscope, any audience member with the app can live broadcast exactly what’s going on stage. There’s no being able to tell them to delete it later in order to prevent the Internet from seeing undeveloped material or an uncharacteristic subpar performance or, perhaps, a meltdown.

While that could capture great moments that wouldn’t exist again such a comedian handling a heckler or Bill Burr’s rant against Philadelphia, a line is blurred when it comes to things like Katt Williams fighting audience members or Hannibal Buress making the whispers of Bill Cosby’s rape allegations into something that the whole world can’t ignore.

Are you illegally recording or doing something that you think is a civic duty?

Imagine how many people would have out their phones out when an audience member went into a disgusting rape story at ASSSSCAT four years ago if Meerkat and Periscope existed then?

How about someone working out jokes for one of Comedy Central’s roasts that gets taken out of context?

So many words have been written about how comedy needs to cross lines of taste and decency in order to make fun of many unquestioned institutions. That’s just how it works.

Hell, when comedians start out, they say and do all sorts of awful things because they’re figuring out how to do comedy. It’s one of the most painful things that exists among all art forms. We’ve personally seen and heard so many awful things at open mics that could spark outrage online but were only meant to be tested at open mics. Then, if they fail, they are most likely never done again.

Given how the Internet is always at-the-ready with torches and pitchforks for the slightest hint of something to get mad at, people “Meerkat-ing” or “Periscoping” a bit, again, out of context might make doing comedy live harder and more frustrating than it already is.

Of course, this is all new technology and maybe none of this will happen.

Maybe all of it will happen.

It’s honestly too early to tell.

We definitely would like to see comedians being able to Periscope or Meerkat into a show or festival half way across the globe.

Certainly, we can be sure that comedians on stage will be a lot more jumpy when they see a phone out for a long time.

SNL Makes Trailer for Gritty “Bambi” Reboot with Dwayne Johnson as Bambi

If they can make a gritty Snow White remake, why not a gritty update for Bambi?

That’s what SNL was thinking lat night when they made a trailer for something that’s a Fast and Furious 7 meets a live action Bambi with The Rock wearing deer ears and a fur vest and Taran Killam in a muscle suit and bunny ears.

Yes, they have plenty of pun “kill lines” too.

The short of the long of it is that not that “we’re” vastly understaffed.

On Oct. 25th, 2014, The Comedy Bureau turned 4 years old. Most of you don’t know that because “we” really didn’t say anything. So, almost half a year later, “we’re” making up for that by throwing a belated anniversary show.

So, on Fri. Apr. 3rd, The Comedy Bureau we’ll be approximately 4 and 5/12th years old and we’ll be celebrating that exact time in our history at one of our favorite venues, Echoes Under Sunset.

With special guests:

Please Support Making of Patrice O’Neal Documentary

Of the documentaries that focus on the life of a single comedian that could be made, one of Patrice O’Neal definitely needs to be made.

As the art form of comedy moves forward, truly unique, trailblazing voices become rarer and rarer. Patrice O’Neal was one such comedic voice that we unfortunately lost too early.

Now, such a documentary, Better Than You, is being made by his fiance Von Decarlo and veteran producer/director Mark Farrell. They’re looking to crowdfund it so they can do it exactly how they want to do it and honor Patrice properly.

So far, they’ve raised $54,889 on Indiegogo out of their $125,000 goal with one month to go.

If this keeps going, this will make for a pretty fun montage or, as the Internet says, supercut.

For how supremely talented and mastered Reggie Watts is, we can’t even imagine all the ways that he could potentially be utilized as the bandleader and a sidekick for The Late Late Show with James Corden.

So far, Reggie asking a question, seemingly off the top of his head, to guests is a great start.

Just check this latest query he posed to Will Ferrell.

With Samantha Bee, Jason Jones, and soon, Jon Stewart leaving The Daily Show, the end of one and the beginning of a new era are coming soon.

Last night marked the final episode of The Daily Show for longtime correspondent Jason Jones and along with it came a great retrospective of Jones’ time there going all the way back to when he started in 2005.

His exit comes at the same time with his wife Sam Bee’s and will precede Stewart’s departure later this year, leaving a Daily Show that’s largely new correspondents and a brand new, yet to be announced host. The individual projects that Jones and Bee have going over at TBS should be fun to look forward to.

In many ways, it’ll be like when Stewart first took over The Daily Show all those years ago.

If Will Ferrell says he doesn’t know what you’re talking about when you ask about the bird on his shoulder, there is most certainly a bit at hand.

There was a time where Ferrell used to pull bananas from the guest couch that he would eat and try not to address at late night talk shows and now Will has upgraded to birds that may or may not be named “Professor Feathers” on his shoulder, “allegedly”.

Watch Will avoid talking about what’s on his should here, then talk about a cowbell album and again try to avoid talking about the bird.

Here’s Will again explaining why he’s foregoing on the Zoolander sequel that has to do with a certain “friend of his”.

Once more, Will doesn’t talk about the bird, but instead addresses John Madden’s criticism of Ferrell’s spring training charity stunt.

This is just more proof that Ferrell is one of the best late night guests in the late night game

As far as board games go, The Settlers of Brooklyn is decidedly less of an escape from your everyday life and more of foretelling of how an up and coming neighborhood comes about.

What better way to explain gentrification than through a complex board game meant for adults with way too many rules and conditions? That’s why Above Average parodied the popular Settlers of Catan and made The Settlers of Brooklyn.

Perhaps, you didn’t need more links between George Costanza and Larry David, but this one’s pretty big.

Larry David has himself booked in his hit Broadway play Fish In The Dark until June. However, the play will continue to run after his exit with Jason Alexander coming in place of David starting Jun. 9th.

On Seinfeld, George Costanza played by Alexander has been linked to Larry David as a sort of an extension of David. So, naturally, Alexander is the perfect person to fill in for David in David’s play.

We imagine whenever tickets are available, they’ll sell out fast.

NBC Schedules “Mr. Robinson” and “The Carmichael Show” For Aug. 5th Premiere

So, both Craig Robinson’s Mr. Robinson and Jerrod Carmichael’s The Carmichael Show could be the next big wave of comedy at NBC.

At the crossroads of Parks and Recreation ending, nixing Must See TV, selling Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to Netflix, and One Big Happy not getting off to a hot start, NBC is trying hard to figure their next move with comedies.

There are plenty of pilots on the development slate, but they’ve got two series that have been stuck in their pocket, in one way or another, for awhile now.

So, at 9PM on Aug. 5th, Mr. Robinson and The Carmichael Show will have their series premiere and then have the potential to be the next thing that the peacock was looking for in their comedy department.

We’ll have to wait more than a few months to see.

IFC is beefing up their new development slate and have added to it a comedy from Jake Fogelnest that centers on an author who is trying to keep up with the times and his son. The project is coming from under Ben Stiller’s Red Hour  banner and given the way Fogelnest deals with the Internet on a daily basis on Twitter, Tumblr, etc., we can definitely see potential here.
