We’re not usually in the business of recommending comedy classes here at TCB, but John Roy’s Entirely Free Comedy Class is something special and unique that is truly helpful for those in stand-up comedy. It has helped those doing their first mics all the way to headliners who already have a very successful career in comedy.

The course itself is self-guided with several lessons over several weeks that really let you develop to being whatever you really want to do in stand-up. Roy, who is an accomplished stand-up himself between albums, late night, touring etc., just revised, which is a great excuse for us to shine another light on it.

Get into the first week of Revised John Roy’s Entirely Free Comedy Class and follow along here.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge catapulted herself into the upper echelons of prestige TV and comedy with the first season of Fleabag.

Since then, she’s been busy with Killing Eve, her other critically acclaimed/award winning TV series.

This is just a reminder that the second season is now streaming on Amazon Prime and, given that it’s Friday, it’d be a perfect day to kick off a binge of Waller-Bridge’s lead in Fleabag (which we have no doubt be an iconic character for years to come) diving into her own neuroses and talking us the whole way through.

If you follow the comedy of Los Espookys creators Fred Armisen, Julio Torres, and Ana Fabrega, you’ll know that you’re in for something delightfully off-kilter with whatever they’re doing.

They’re bilingual comedy horror series Los Espookys is no different as it follows a latinx group that gets hired to give folks terrifying experiences (some of which might be a little too real?). This trailer really whet our appetite for this is so vastly different from anything else on TV right now. See for yourself here.

Booksmart Is the Coming-of-Age Comedy of the Summer

Sure, this Summer hasn’t every officially kicked off yet, but we’re so charmed by Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut with Booksmart to say that it should reign in the coming-of-age comedy sub genre in 2019 like Blockers did in 2018.

First off, we want to say that Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever’s performances really are the sparks that get this movie cooking. Their performances, for our money, should put Hollywood on notice of their arrival.

Overall, there’s a certain hope that we get from how Gen Z is depicted throughout the movie in a way that avoids being disingenuous. It’s refreshing to see a teen comedy that has hope for the future as its two leads are both high achievers, but are also fully realized as teens clawing for their first taste of freedom. The framework for the classic high school buddy comedy is there without pandering to any generation in particular.

One could very easily say that it’s a “woke Superbad”, but that is being too reductive of our tastes and ignores the nuances that Wilde and writers Sarah Haskins, Susanna Fogel, Katherine Silberman, Emily Halpern crafted into the film. Booksmart truly manages a delicate balance of being a broad comedy, but still having lot of heart and warmth without forcing it.

Booksmart comes out nationwide on May 24th, but there are special advanced screenings that start tomorrow. Get all the details here.

The tragic loss of the brilliant Brody Stevens is still reverberating throughout comedy and will for quite some time. His passing makes the issue of mental health and its crucial importance in our lives.

With that in mind, Largo is holding a benefit in Brody’s memory for NAMI (National Association on Mental Illness) that will feature Sarah Silverman, Zach Galifianakis, and more next Wednesday, May 22nd 8:30PM.

TBS Orders Half Hour Amy Hoggart Series That’s About Making People Feel Better Rather Than Politics

TBS is putting their money now on Amy Hoggart, who was a correspondent at Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, for a new half-hour series that aims to take on the “societal angst” and be non-political. The series order got announced today at WarnerMedia’s upfronts.

Hoggart’s delightful brashness stood out at Full Frontal and we’re curious to see how she takes on American anxiety (she’s from the UK in case you didn’t know)

The series has yet to get a title and we’d curious to see if it would have as much double entendre as Sam Bee’s show.

For his work on The Carol Burnett Show alone, Tim Conway could be remembered as a comedy legend. Yet, Conway did so much more in his vast, vast career as a comedic actor spanning from the original McHale’s Navy all the way to being a voice on SpongeBob SquarePants.

Conway passed away today at the age of 85 and it should be your duty to go down a rabbit hole trying to watch his renowned performances over the decades.

We’ll start you off here with the classic “The Dentist”.

Anthony Atamanuik and James Adomian, for our money, have the best Trump impression and Bernie Sanders impressions, respectively. The 2016 election cycle saw them bring their powers together to create the live show Trump vs. Bernie, which, went on a nationwide tour and got adapted for TV.

Leading up to the 2020 election, a real life match up between Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders might happen yet again, which is a great excuse to revive Trump vs. Bernie for a tour, which is exactly what’s happening.

Join Ataamnuik and Adomian at the Lodge Room in Highland Park on July 17th at 7:30PM to see Trump vs. Bernie rise yet again. Tickets are $30 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

Colin Quinn’s Red State Blue State Is Now Going from Off-Broadway Show to Comedy Special at CNN

Colin Quinn’s new hour has found a new home. It’s pretty much assumed that his solo shows will eventually become specials. It’s interesting that there is a move from Netflix (where his last special was) to CNN, but we’re going to guess that Colin is getting to do pretty much what he wants at either place.

Also, maybe this will stream for free on CNN.com for brief period of time as well? We’ll just have to wait and see.

With W. Kamau Bell and United Shades of America and this recent announcement of a new Colin Quinn special (specifically focused on the political divisiveness all around right now), it would seem the CNN is aiming for a niche in political comedy specifically.

Jerrod Carmichael Has Another Outside-the-Box Special Coming with “Home Videos”

From the get go of Jerrod Carmichael being at HBO, he has been constantly innovating the idea of what a comedy special could be and what it looks like (he had an instrumental part in devising Drew Michael’s experimental special that featured no live audience).

Come this Mother’s Day, May 12th at 7PM on HBO, Jerrod will be presenting a much different special called “Home Videos”.

From the looks of these promos, Jerrod is having frank conversations with black women in their homes to present their perspective on HBO, which is both so subtle and radical. We’re curious as to what the whole thing might be and how Jerrod will work his charm in this special.

We’ll find out soon enough on Mother’s Day.

The first ep. gives a spirited start to The Underculture with Adomian as Chris Matthews and Alyssa Limperis as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez going toe-to-toe, then a philosophical, but fun chat afterwards sans impressions. Already, we’re looking forward to visiting Adomian’s neighborhood of all his spot-on impressions every week (there’s bonus content via Patreon too).

FX Orders Second Season of “What We Do In The Shadows”

Looks like FX is going to keep their comedy programming at its consistently high level with another season of the TV adaptation of What We Do In The Shadows.

Even thinking of what Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement will do with the sandbox of a second season of vampires trying to get by is pretty great. It’ll be thankfully come some time next year (a welcome respite for what’s sure to be another nasty election cycle).

It is travesty that she didn’t win an Emmy with the Trojan Horse of a short form comedy series, An Emmy for Megan.

That being said, Amram’s definitely still is moving onwards and upwards as she just scored an overall deal to develop projects at Universal Television. We can only ponder what sort of disrupting she has up her sleeve with what she’s going to bring to Universal.

On top of that, Amram released season 2 of An Emmy for Megan, which doubles down on its self-reflexive absurdity by following Megan “trying to not make a season 2 of An Emmy for Megan”. Also, Patton Oswalt does an “after-show” and caps off another six delicious episodes of Amram’s groundbreaking series.

Please enjoy all six episodes right here right now.

Note that she did yet again pay for a billboards of the poster above, one of which we saw one on Sunset Blvd. yesterday.

Lez Miz and Friends is so damn ambitious as a meta musical that viciously deconstructs the beloved, eternally running musical Les Miserables as well as work in puppets versus humans paradigm into the whole thing. It’s a tall order, but writers Nathan Makaryk and Geneviève Flati and the marvelous cast pull it off with precise abandon.

It’s such a rollicking dashing of convention that we’d wager you’d enjoy even if puppets, musicals, and Les Miserables weren’t really your thing.

Les Miz and Friends has running at the Hudson Theatre in Hollywood for the last several weeks and will be finishing their run this weekend (Fri. 8PM/Sat. 3PM & 8PM). Don’t miss your chance to catch before it leaves. Go get your tickets (they’re $32 a piece) here right now.
