Pick of the Day: THE STAND PRESENTS: ROBIN TRAN & STACY CAY (in NYC) 3/9

February 21, 2024
News
chelsea music hall, nyc comedy, stand up comedy, the stand, trans

It’s not everyday that the comic minds of Robin Tran and Stacy Cay come through NYC to co-headline a very special evening of comedy. These two celebrated comedians are a hysterical, shining beacon for both a trans-identity perspective as well as having wonderfully cutting humor and shouldn’t be missed when headlining solo, but especially not when they’re going up one right after other.

NYC’s Chelsea Music Hall is going to get such a treat next month! Presented by The Stand, Saturday, March 9th at 8PM will be a grand night of Tran and Cay. Tickets are on sale for $30.03 a pop and you best go get them before they sell out. Do so here!

Pick of the Day: Mentioned You. (in NYC) 7/13

July 6, 2023
News

A competitive dating show is a tried and true formula. From The Dating Game to F Boy Island, the entertainment value is kind of undeniable, especially in regards into unintentional (or maybe intentionally “unintentional”) comedy that gets run through the gauntlet on the Internet and lives on forever in meme vernacular.

So, why not up the ante with having comedians competing against each other in a dating show format? Well, that’s exactly what is happening with Ethan Terzi’s “Mentioned You.” where 5 comedians square off to win the love (or more accurately, momentary attraction?) of 1 bachelorette. NYC comedy’s Ryan Long, Andrew Casertano, Adam Gilbert, Caroline Hanes, Ray DeVito, and Tommy Bayer will be the suitors with John Kennedy and Daniela Mora presiding over what should be the best version of a Dating Game/Bachelor format.

So, look out for Mentioned You. @ The Stand on Thurs. Jul. 13th at 10PM. Tickets are $18.69 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Surrounded: Crowdwork in the Round (in NYC) 3/9

February 27, 2023
News
crowd work, mike falzone, new york comedy, stand up comedy, the stand

For quite some time now, comedian multi-hyphenate Mike Falzone has encircled performers with audience members and prohibited them from doing any prepared material and resorting only to crowd work on his creation, Surrounded. It has been a delightful monthly installment at The Hollywood Improv, but is going to be touching down in NYC next week.

That’s right, there will be a special rearranging of the Main Room at The Stand in NYC, probably unlike the club has ever had and the crowd will be as close and on top of the comedians as possibly can be. It’s a special, unique crowd work show (especially because Mike brings such a positive energy to his crowd work show) that feels more like a communal experience rather than being singled out for something you’re wearing by a comic who forgot their next joke.

Surrounded is set for The Stand on Thurs. Mar. 9th at 8PM and 10PM and you can (and should) get tickets here & here respectively for $19.72 ($15 plus fees) a pop.

Pick of the Day: Hopkins & Friends (in NYC) 1/22

January 18, 2023
News
adam pally, daniel simonsen, dina hashem, ilana glazer, james austin johnson, jess hopkins, moses storm, nyc comedy, phoebe robinson, stand up comedy, the stand

Sometimes, there’s just an amazing line-up for a classic stand-up show at a comedy club and tickets are still available for not a crazy price and those things together are worthy of highlighting.

Such is the case of Hopkins & Friends at The Stand this Sunday. Along with host Jess Hopkins, an incredibly choice NYC line-up of Adam Pally, Phoebe Robinson, Moses Storm, Daniel Simonsen, James Austin Johnson, Dina Hashem, Ilana Glazer, and John Hopkins (assuming that’s not someone from the prestigious medical institution?) will be taking The Stand’s Main Room stage at 8PM on Jan. 22nd and you ought to know that will be one hell of a show.

Also, tickets are only $25 (and there’s no item minimum). Go get ’em before they sell out here.

Pick of the Day: NYCF-Million Dollar Roasting 11/13

November 10, 2022
News
Devon Walker, hanna dickinson, Kerryn Feehan, Lil Frex, new york comedy festival, nycf, parody, the stand, zillow

The New York Comedy Festival is coming to a close this Sunday, but that leaves three days that are still absolutely jam packed with comedy that you absolutely shouldn’t miss across all of NYC.

In fact, on Sunday, at The Stand, we’d wager that you would very much get a kick out of some of the busiest and most booked of the NYC comedy scene (including one of SNL’s latest hires) roasting million dollar real estate. Called Million Dollar Roasting, Hanna Dickinson will lead Devon Walker, Kerryn Feehan, Lil Frex, and other special guests to go through Zillow listings that start at $10 million dollars. It can be hard to stick it to the 1%, but making fun of what sort of property they waste their money on can be a lot of fun.

Million Dollar Roasting is set for this Sun. Nov. 13th, the final day of NYCF, at 7PM at The Stand. Tickets are $25 and you can (and should) go get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: The Byron Bowers Experience (in NYC) 7/20

July 13, 2021
News
byron bowers, nyc, stand up, the stand

Often in LA, we’re lucky to get treated to the wild, dark, and hysterical comedy musings and stories of Byron Bowers. He has been a beloved fixture in the scene for as long as we have seen him in and throughout LA.

Bowers often has a knack for lulling people into his sharp comedic turns and really diving deep into his material and expanding his bits to their fullest potential. We got to see Byron run this particular hour and we didn’t even realize that he had actually gone well over an hour by the end of it (as a testament to how captivating his presence and command of the stage really is).

So, Byron is bringing his Byron Bowers Experience to The Stand in NYC on July 20th at 9:30PM ET with Josh Adam Meyers opening. Tickets are going for $20 (plus $5 service fee). Go get them here right now.

Get Your First Look at SXSW Online 2021’s Cross Country Comedy Club Showcase

We had previously told you that SXSW was going virtual for the entirety of their program this year as a result of the pandemic and that, for comedy, they had collected exclusive performances from some of the most well known and respected comedy clubs across the country. That includes The Stand, Acme Comedy Co., Dynasty Typewriter, Hollywood Improv, Zanies Chicago, and more.

Well, SXSW Online 2021 is happening this week, Mar. 16th-Mar. 20th, and you can take a gander at what that all looks like (including Joel Kim Booster performing in front of marionettes) as this sneak peek was just posted on Twitter. It’s nice to see that it’s not just a bunch of Zoom shows and a reminder of how much we can’t wait to get back to watching live comedy in person.

Get more info on the full line-ups of venues and performers participating in SXSW Comedy this year here.

For #SXSW Online 2021, we invited some of the most lauded comedy venues from around the country to present live shows from their home stages.

SXSW Online 2021 Announces a Comedy Line-Up Featuring the Some of America’s Most Renowned Comedy Clubs

It is not too far from this time last year that the devastating news that SXSW was going to be cancelled was going to be delivered. Along with its cancellation came the nixing of a wide-ranging program of live comedy that had become one of Texas’ biggest annual comedy events.

As we are still in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic, SXSW is going entirely virtual for 2021. They did not want to be deterred from not only highlighting the best in comedy wherever the festival could find it, but note how truly special it is and help it survive through its various “homes” and “family members”.

Thusly, SXSW Comedy is opting to have exclusive performances (done with strict COVID-19 safety protocols) from the some of the most hallowed comedy clubs in the country including Acme Comedy Co in Minneapolis, Dynasty Typewriter and the Hollywood Improv in Los Angeles, Gotham Comedy Club in NYC, and Zanies Comedy Club in Chicago with the celebrated comedy stylings of Beth Stelling, Reggie Watts, Erin Jackson, Monroe Martin III, Clayton English, Chris Porter, Emma Willmann, Dan Soder, Joel Kim Booster, and Matty Ryan. Doug Loves Movies, Matt Besser’s improv4humans, selections from The Creek & The Cave’s Bring Back Laughs will also be part of this marvelous cross-country virtual SXSW comedy round-up.

This should be a momentous occasion coming on a year of lockdown in America and how we have all endured and comedy is still going (and will hopefully keep surviving) despite being challenged like it has never been challenged before.

This year’s online edition of SXSW is set for Mar. 16th-20th and you can get more info on their comedy offerings as well as buy/register for a pass here.

Jenny Zigrino and Jen Saunderson Made a Cooking Show Actually Inspired by Jokes with “The Filling Is Mutual”

If you’re a fan of any cooking show where chefs all have to use a weird ingredient, you’ll dig IFC web series The Filling Is Mutual.

Hosts Jenny Zigrino and Jen Saunderson pick out a single joke from their comedian guests’ acts and then dream up a dish based on said joke. Sometimes, it’s delicious and sometimes, it really embodies the joke as much as a recipe can.

In any case, you should watch The Filling Is Mutual and maybe get hungry for ‘dicks in a komono’ or ‘white devil eggs’.

One by one, more comedy networks now are getting their own digital arm.

Comedy Central has CC:Studios, Fox has FoxADHD, IFC has Comedy Crib, and now Fusion has just launched their digital online comedy studio “F-Comedy”.

They’ll be partnering with the YouTube Space, UCB, 3 Arts, NYC’s The Stand and more to bring a bunch of new original, short form content that’s hopefully in the wheelhouse that they’ve been building with No, You Shut Up! with Paul F. Tompkins and The Chris Gethard Show.

The Village Voice Follows Mark Normand for a Night of Stand-Up in NYC

NYC’s Village Voice has started a new web series following stand-up comedians around as they perform and then speak frankly about their craft. It’s very appropriately called This Is Stand Up and this episode follows Mark Normand as he goes up a bunch around town, offering his thoughts on how on the fringes stand-up comedians really are.

Also, Mark gets to be Mark’s goofy self, which is always fun to see. Watch it here.
