Superego’s Matt Gourley and James Bladon Have Made Theme Songs for Non-Existent TV Shows and Are Taking Submissions For Opening Sequences

This is almost like a DIY version of Adam Scott’s Greatest Event in Television History specials.

Matt Gourley from the beloved Superego and James Bladon have teamed up to make TV themes that sounds so much like a real TV theme of a TV show from yesteryear, you’d have a hard time believing the shows didn’t exist. Even when they have long acronyms like S.T.I.N.G.R.A.Y. or juxtapose gnomes into a sitcom, the theme songs of Stay Tuned Vol. 1 are pretty perfect.

If you so desire and have the free time and resources to do so, Gourley and Bladon are looking for submissions for opening credit sequences to go with these themes. They just might feature your submissions as well.

While it might seem like a lot of work, we have no doubt that someone’s going to come up with something great as plenty of folks did for Superego’s Stetch Maldonay contest.

Superego Once Recorded a Nearly 40 Min. Sketch That They Are Holding a Contest To See What Someone Can Do With It

Superego is one of the funniest podcasts around as they really let loose in all their sketches. In fact, just over two years ago, the did a sketch entitled “Stetch Maldonay: Scissor Shapener” that clocked in, raw and unedited, at 38:41.

A quick Google search and check of Record Setter will leave you unsure of exactly if there’s a longer sketch on record in existence (there is a Shortest Comedy Sketch), so we’re going to say, for now, that’s the world’s longest single comedy sketch.

Currently it’s in three separate tracks here, here, and here.

Knowing all of this, the guys over at Superego have been racking their brains for years in trying to see what they can do to make Stetch Maldonay more manageable and into something that would put on a episode of the podcast that features numerous sketches of more standard length.

Now, they’re giving all of us a chance to take this beast on.

If you have the audio know how and have a good sense of comedic structure and timing, you might want to give this a shot. They’re taking submissions until May 1st and might feature it on the actual show. Get all the details here.

Continuing in the direction of making the landscape of television less male and white, both NBC and HBO have just announced programs designed to find diverse talent.

More specifically, NBC has partnered with the legendary Second City to find new sketch talent (via The Wrap) in the form of fellowships, scholarship awards, and a festival. Hopefully, this will help them avoid such things as having to hold a “secret” audition for a new black female cast member for SNL.

HBO has launched their own HBOAccess Writing Fellowship that will search for unrepresented writers from “diverse backgrounds” (via Deadline). If accepted, you’ll get a week long intensive, 8 months writing/development period with HBO top brass, and a live table read. With Girls, Silicon Valley, Veep, The Comeback, and Togetherness, we’re HBO would like to continue their hot comedy streak.
