August 30, 2022
News
catalina comedy island, catalina island, dave attell, los angeles comedy, michelle wolf, stand up comedy

As Labor Day weekend is just around the corner, you might be thinking to yourself that a long weekend isn’t enough a break that you so desperately need as this current slow apocalypse keeps oozing along.

Maybe you need two of them?

Certainly, that would allow you, if you’re in and around LA, to go to Catalina Island’s first Catalina Comedy Island, a weekend long mini comedy festival that allows you to take in being in the Pacific Ocean without being too far from Los Angeles.

Running on Fri. Sept. 9th and Sept. 10th at the Catalina Island Casino, you can take your pick of Bumping Mics with Dave Attell, Jeff Ross, and Michelle Wolf OR Dana Carvey & sons or watch both. Tickets for either show start at $85, but you can get 10% off with promo code “BUREAU10”.

Get more details (including the Saturday night 11:45pm ferry), tickets, and more at catalinacomedyisland.com.

Ian Karmel Thanks Folks for Wedding Presents While Doing a Tight Late Night Set on Weddings

August 30, 2022
News
ian karmel, james corden, late late show, late night, stand up comedy

Ian Karmel is such an integral part of The Late Late Show and a force on the podcast he co-hosts, All Fantasy Everything, that you might need a reminder that Karmel is quite the hysterical stand-up comedian. That’s actually the thing that got him to elevated station he’s at now and he hasn’t lost a step while being one of the funniest co-hosts on TV and in your headphones.

This latest late night set from him on last night’s Corden is proof positive. Karmel does one of the best sets on weddings, perfectly observed and written bits sandwiched in between legitimate expressions of gratitude for wedding gifts he has received before his wedding this week.

Please enjoy his set here and make sure you take every chance you can to see Ian live.

Pick of the Day: Nick Youssef’s First Special Taping (in NYC) 9/27

August 25, 2022
News
live taping, manhattan, nick youssef, nyc comedy, stand up comedy, west village, zinc bar

Stand-up comedy is pretty much back on pace with where it was in 2019, which means there are plenty of live tapings for specials and albums for you to attend. In fact, there are so many that you’ve very likely to choose which ones you ought to make it out to.

In NYC, you really ought to not miss Nick Youssef taping anything, much less his very first special, even much more less a special being taped at an extremely swanky spot in the West Village. Youssef was a stalwart part of LA’s scene for the longest time and has very impressively carved the same spot for himself in NYC’s even more crowded field of comics.

Following a handful of very good albums, Nick is indeed doing his very first comedy special, completely crowdfunded, on Tues. Sept. 27th at what is normally a very classy jazz bar, Zinc Bar, which should be the added bonus of seeing Youssef present his finely carved, astutely observed comedy wares.

There will be two tapings, 8PM & 10PM, and tickets are $25 and you can (and should) go get them here right now.

Get Your First Look at Sheng Wang’s First Hour Special “Sweet and Juicy” (That’s Also Ali Wong’s First Time Directing)

August 22, 2022
News
ali wong, netflix, sheng wang, stand up comedy

An hour special from Sheng Wang is long, long overdue. A slow burn comedic style that still hits so hard with great punchlines, specifically pitch perfect diction and delivery is very hard to pull off and, consequently, a rarity these days.

Sheng Wang makes such a feat seem so effortless as his deep, reassuring voice makes some of the most precise writing in all of comedy feel buttery. Certainly, the world will get treated to such delights come Tues. Sept. 6th when Sheng’s first hour special, Sweet and Juicy, debuts on Netflix. As a bonus, you’ll get to see Ali Wong’s directorial debut as she is at the helm for this hour special for the very first time.

Get your first taste of all of this in the trailer, which is, thankfully, just one complete joke that you can savor and then get hooked on.

Pick of the Day: Flagship (near LA) Fridays Starting 8/26

August 18, 2022
News
glendale, los angeles comedy, mike bridenstine, stand up comedy, the glendale room

Throughout our tenure covering LA comedy, we’ve seen plenty a weekly comedy show and go and a crucial factor contributing to that is the day of the week that the show chooses. Fridays, in our experience, is one of the hardest to pull off as there are plenty of the big nights at the big comedy clubs, special events, in-town headliners, one-offs, monthlys on top of just the general idea of being at the weekend’s doorstep and folks wanting to just enjoy a drink with friends at their favorite local bar to compete with.

That’s not to say it can’t be done. Faded, of course, has carved out their home on Fridays on Melrose, but there is a new weekly show coming to the Eastside, specifically in Glendale at the what is quickly being known as LA comedy’s coziest room, The Glendale Room. The low key, indie book store feel has provided a wonderfully intimate space for all kinds of comedy, but what will soon be home to Flagship on Fridays at 8PM with host Mike Bridenstine.

Just like all the other weekly shows that Bridenstine has his fingers in on the Eastside, it’ll be a very neatly curated line-up of LA’s finest, amazing visiting comics, and old stalwarts from Bridenstine’s Chicago days.

The very first line-up will feature stand-up from:

Sammy Mowrey
Kiran Deol
Megan Gailey
Max Beasley
River Butcher
Jared Logan

You can (and should) go get tickets here for the nice price of just $10 every week starting next Fri. Aug. 26th.

Pick of the Day: Jerrod Carmichael-Work in Progress (in LA) 8/11

August 10, 2022
News
jerrod carmichael, los angeles comedy, silverlake, stand up comedy

It is pretty much without question or any debate that Jerrod Carmichael’s Rothaniel is not only one of the best stand-up specials of 2022, but one of the best ones in recent memory (and very likely of this decade). The gravity of that special and playing with such a wide open blank canvas and open floor of conversation is revelatory.

With that in mind, you’re probably not going to want to miss Jerrod doing a work-in-progress show here in LA. Lucky for you, there’s one happening this Thurs. night Aug. 11th at 9:30PM PT @ Lyric Hyperion in Silverlake. Tickets are $18 (w/a $16 item min.) and space is definitely limited. You’re going to want to snag tickets quick before they inevitably sell out.

Pick of the Day: Bill Burr (in NYC) 8/10

August 8, 2022
News
bill burr, city winery, forest hills, nyc comedy, queens, stand up comedy

The one and only Bill Burr in back in NYC this week.

With Live at Red Rocks having been just released on Netflix just a few weeks ago, Burr undoubtedly has a new hour that you can catch live and in-person if you head on down to Queens. There’s about a million and a half things that have happened since Burr recorded that special and, of course, he has his sharp, signature satiric take on all of it (on top of figuring out how to not be like his dad with very own kids).

City Winery is putting on Burr at Forest Hills Stadium in Forest Hills, Queens this Wed. Aug. 10th at 7:30PM ET and they’re still tickets available if you’ve got a cool $175 in your back pocket. Get tickets while you still can, if you’ve got the cash, here.

Please Enjoy ATL’s Katherine Blanford and Her Late Night Debut on The Tonight Show

August 4, 2022
News
katherine blanford, late night, stand up comedy, tonight show

If you don’t already know about how great the comedy scene is in Atlanta, let this serve as a friendly reminder that plenty of great comedians are right there right now in addition to the wealth of headliners that come through their healthy stable of comedy clubs/theaters/venues. Both Joe Zimmerman and Andy Sandford came out of ATL and are now very solid staples of NYC’s stand-up scene.

Katherine Blanford is a shining star in Atlanta’s scene and showed exactly why, as well as repping for Atlanta comedy, on The Tonight Show last night. Blanford’s dazzling charisma, homespun, down-to-earth delivery, and her plentiful, sharply written punchlines put on quite the debut for a late night set (and we have no doubt that there will be more to come).

With that all said, please enjoy Katherine Blanford’s first Tonight Show set here.

Pick of the Day: David Gborie Does Time (in LA) 9/15

August 3, 2022
News
david gborie, elysian, la comedy, stand up comedy

Pre-pandemic, the brilliant, hysterical, and just undeniably gregarious David Gborie lit up stages across LA all the time with a million dollar smile and comedic takes on the world that were both 1000% honest, but so fun and inclusive at the same time.

In the midst of pandemic times, Gborie has since relocated to Denver and carved quite the spot for himself in that scene. While that leaves a David Gborie size hole in our hearts, we’re thrilled and thankful to hear that Gborie is coming back for a night to headline The Elysian.

Thurs. Sept. 15th at 7:30PM PT, David Gborie will indeed do time and you shouldn’t miss a single second of it. Tickets are $18 and you can and very much should go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Sam Jay (in NYC) 8/12-8/14

August 2, 2022
News
caroline's, nyc comedy, sam jay, stand up comedy

Whether you know her from her unflinchingly observed and razor sharp stand-up or her even more exacting comedic perspective on her show Pause with Sam Jay or seeing her writing on SNL, Sam Jay is one of those rare comedians that is actually deserving of being described as a force of nature.

Sam Jay changes the energy the whole room whenever she’s on stage and is mastered at using tension to the perfect comedic degree, which is why you shouldn’t miss your chance to see her headline live at Caroline’s on Broadway this month. In fact, she’s doing a whole weekend of shows from Fri. Aug. 12th-Sun. Aug. 14th.

Tickets start at $35 plus 2 drink minimum and you can (and should) go get your tickets while you still can at Carolines.com

Pick of the Day: Sarah Squirm (in LA) 9/14

August 1, 2022
News
los angeles comedy, sarah squirm, stand up comedy, zebulon

Sarah Squirm is returning to back to LA as part of the leg of her international Live & in the Flesh tour this year. Squirm will have just returned stateside from the UK and triumphantly take the stage with herself and all of her subversive grotesque hilarity at Zebulon, the last place she had a show in LA before she got brought up to the majors at SNL.

Wed. Sept. 14th is the date that you got to mark down for Sarah Squirm: Live & in the Flesh with a 7PM PT & 10PM PT show. The early show is already sold out with a wait list available for sign-up, but you can buy tickets for the late Sarah Squirm show at 10 for $18.60 right now right here. No matter which one you go for, you better act fast before you don’t have any chances at all to get tickets.

Pick of the Day: So, That Just Happened with Rachel Kaly, an Album Recording (in NYC) 7/30

July 29, 2022
News
album recording, brooklyn, gowanus, nyc comedy, stand up comedy, weird comedy

Tall tales at a slow burn are Rachel Kaly‘s speciality and there’s almost no one that does it quite like Rachel. It’s always a simultaneously spellbinding, yet laid-back journey that Kaly takes any and all of her audiences on.

The idea that Rachel is going to explicitly do something “weird” she be even more incentive to any level of curiosity to any sort of comedy fan to go out and find out what the hell she has up her sleeves (especially since they’re probably short sleeves on a t-shirt). Rachel is not only doing an album recording in Brooklyn at Gowanus’ secret performance venue Life World, but she’s is going, as we alluded to, “weird”, which will no doubt keep you guessing even as you’re watching the show in the most delightful way possible.

So, That Just Happened with Rachel Kaly is happening this Sat. Jul. 30th at 7PM ET and you better snag your tickets right now. They’re only $7 and it’s probably the best bargain you’re going to get in all of NYC this weekend. Go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Josh Gondelman: What’s New? (in NYC) 7/31

July 22, 2022
News
brooklyn, josh gondelman, ny comedy, stand up comedy, union hall

For all that is said about how gritty NYC is and how much hustle and grinding goes in on NYC comedy specifically, Josh Gondelman is living proof that you can be one of comedy’s nicest folks and also be one of the funniest people throughout all of NYC (and beyond).

Gondelman has not only killed it on so many stages around the scene with his sweet demeanor, but has written for so many of the best shows on TV including Last Week Tonight and Desus & Mero. Come Sun. Jul. 31st at 8PM ET at Union Hall, you can watch him, up close and personal, work on brand new jokes along with other grand NYC comedy staples Hari Kondabolu, Ophira Eisenberg, and Mohanad Elshieky.

Tickets are only $12 right now and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Summer Girl Winter Boy: Greta Titelman and Matt Rogers (in LA) 8/5

July 21, 2022
News
greta titelman, hollywood improv, la comedy, matt rogers, stand up comedy

You’re well aware that it’s actually quite the rarity to see a legitimate hour set from a comedian while in LA or NYC. Stage time is such a scarce resource for an ever growing number of comedians that you should take the chance, if you can find it, to go watch someone do an hour rather than one of their handful of ten minute sets they’re doing around town.

For all the attitude, style, spunk, and wit that both Greta Titelman (Search Party) and Matt Rogers (I Love That For You, Fire Island) bring to the stage, you should really never miss a set of theirs. Lucky for LA, they’re co-headlining back to back at the one and only Hollywood Improv next month.

Mark down Fri. Aug. 5th at 8PM PT for having an evening on Melrose and watching Greta and Matt take over the Improv’s Main Room. Tickets are $25 (plus 2 item min.) and don’t be surprised if it sells out soon. Go get ’em here ASAP.

Pick of the Day: Good Heroin with Lindsay Adams and Rob Haze (in LA) 7/16

July 15, 2022
News
comedy show, echo park, free comedy, la comedy, lindsay adams, los angeles, rob haze, stand up comedy

Good Heroin is and has been one of the very best weekly stand-up shows in LA for a very long time. Saturdays at the back patio of Stories has been a destination for comedy fans far and wide as well as those Eastside denizens looking for a splendid evening without having to go too far.

For a good run of the show’s history as a LA comedy staple, it was dutifully hosted by Dave Ross and Matt Ingebretson. When Ingebretson got swept away in the wonderfully dark Corporate on Comedy Central, which he co-created and co-starred in, Dave took on hosting duties solely. In the past several months, Dave has been bi-coastal and sharing hosting duties and the mantle to Good Heroin with LA comedy’s favorite reformed mean girl, Lindsay Adams.

Since Dave has made an official move to NYC, he has officially handed off and kept the Good Heroin name alive with faith placed in its two new co-hosting duo, the aforementioned Lindsay Adams and LA transplant and one of comedy’s most clever minds, Rob Haze. This coming Saturday, Jul. 16th marks Lindsay and Rob’s first Good Heroin (where Rob wasn’t kept as a secret to be revealed) and a start to new era of one of LA’s comedy cornerstone shows.

So, if it being great, free stand-up (w/Jackie Kashian, Jenny Zigrino, Nori Reed, Morgan Jay, Michelle Biloon, Rob Smallwood for 7/16) on a Saturday night at 8 wasn’t enough for you to come down to 1716 Sunset Blvd., we hope this historical moment will be enough to convince you to go (and subsequently keep coming back) to Good Heroin.

Pick of the Day: Cameron Esposito Works Out (in LA) 7/13

July 8, 2022
News
cameron esposito, largo, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

Since Cameron Esposito moved to LA several years ago via Chicago, they’ve been one of our favorite folks to watch and, for our money, a crucial voice in comedy at large. Her unflinching vulnerability and masterful storytelling and joke writing stick with us any time we see them on stage. When it comes to the pressing issues of our time, Cameron is one of the first comedians that we really want to hear weigh in.

Thus, if you have a chance to see Cameron do an hour of stand-up, please take it immediately. For LA folks, you’re in luck as they’re working out a new hour, hence Cameron Esposito Works Out, at Largo at the Coronet Theatre next week on Jul. 8th at 8:30PM PT. Tickets are $46 (including fees) and you can (and very much should) go get your tickets here.

Pick of the Day: In Unit Laundry with Simon Gibson and M.K. Paulsen (in LA) Tuesdays Starting 7/19

July 7, 2022
News
la comedy, lyric hyperion, mk paulsen, silverlake, simon gibson, stand up comedy

Leading into 2020, it was a time where not only was there so much live comedy to go see, but one could treat themselves to seeing the very funny likes of Simon Gibson and M.K. Paulsen all the time. Having been roommates, doing a podcast together, being on a reality show about JFL, and more, Simon and M.K. are perhaps, LA comedy’s favorite odd couple.

Smack dab in the middle of 2022, we’re getting back to the volume of comedy that we had almost three years ago and part of that return is M.K. and Simon having a weekly stand-up showcase at the newly refurbished Lyric Hyperion. Called In-Unit Laundry, Simon and M.K. will gather their favorite comedy folks from the scene (and whatever good folks are in town) Tuesdays at 8PM PT at 2106 Hyperion Ave.

They’re kicking off this weekly run on Jul. 19th and tickets are only $10 if you buy them in advance here.

With an inaugural line-up of Joel Kim Booster, James Adomian, Kylie Brakeman, Solomon Georgio, Erik Rivera, and Steph Tolev, it’s a show that damn well better not miss.

Pick of the Day: Jena Friedman-Ladykiller Special Taping (in NYC) 7/15

July 5, 2022
News
comedy special, free taping, jena friedman, nyc comedy, peacock, stand up comedy, tv taping

Jena Friedman was already one of the most crucial voices in comedy, dedicating her needle-sharp material to topics and issues that have only become more pressing over the last few weeks. When it comes to the agency and freedom of women, Jena stands tall with some of the best, dark jokes being told on stages today or on her series, Soft Focus or Indefensible.

So, Jena is taping an hour special, Ladykiller, next week for Peacock that will be a great, long-awaited follow-up to American C*nt. There will be two tapings on Fri. Jul. 15th at 7PM ET & 9PM ET at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. It’s free to attend so long as you’re fully vaccinated. Go reserve tickets here.

Pick of the Day: Sabrina Jalees & Friends in Support of National Network of Abortion Funds (in LA) 7/19

June 30, 2022
News
abortion access, charity benefit, joel kim booster, largo, los angeles, Mae Martin, naomi ekperigin, national network of abortion funds, nori reed, sabrina jalees, solomon georgio, stand up comedy

It’s quite simple. It’s a grand line-up of comedy here in LA featuring the likes of Mae Martin, Nori Reed, Naomi Ekperigin, Solomon Georgio, Joel Kim Booster, and host Sabrina Jalees and one of the bigger tickets that has its proceeds going to abortion access.

Specifically, Sabrina and company will be performing in support of the National Network of Abortion Funds that will provide whatever they can to women who will be losing access to legal and safe abortions in the way-too-near future. This crucial show is happening on Tues. Jul. 19th at 8:30PM PT and one of LA comedy’s crown jewels, Largo at the Coronet Theatre.

Tickets are $46 (and that’s plenty going to NNAF) and you really need to go get your tickets here.

Take Your First Look at Nikki Glaser’s First HBO Special “Good Clean Filth”

June 30, 2022
News
comedy special, good clean filth, hbo, nikki glaser, stand up comedy

While Nikki Glaser has very much planted a solid foot in the world of reality TV with Welcome Home Nikki Glaser? and F Boy Island, she is still very much the razor sharp, endearingly and unapologetically blue stand-up comedian that worked her way up to where she is now.

Glaser is going to thankfully remind us all of that with her latest hour special, the first one for HBO, Good Clean Filth, where she looks to be more earnest about her life, especially when it comes to sex. From the trailer, it looks like the perfect follow-up to her Netflix hour, Bangin’, where she so sweetly got so hysterically dirty about the prurient parts of her life.

Take a gander at Nikki Glaser: Good Clean Filth for yourself here, then look for it on HBO on Jul. 16th at 10PM, then HBO Max shortly thereafter.

Pick of the Day: Lance Bangs Presents (in LA) 9/2

June 28, 2022
News
brandon wardell, Caleb Hearon, david gborie, elysian, fred armisen, girl god, ian karmel, la comedy, lance bangs, moses storm, natalie palamides, reggie watts, stand up comedy

If you Google “Lance Bangs”, you’ll first read that he’s an American Filmmaker. While that’s very true, Bangs is also a curator of the underground, seeking out those thrilling voices, often in and around comedy that you hope to bare witness to at a live comedy and/or music show. Having worked with the likes of Jackass to Tyler the Creator to Marc Maron to Nirvana to George Harrison to John Hodgman to his latest work on Moses Storm’s acclaimed HBO special, Trash White, Bangs is one of the most respected figures behind the scenes.

So, the fact that he’s curating a very special night of comedy at The Elysian come Fri. Sept. 2nd should be something you mark down on your calendar immediately, right after you immediately get tickets.

The line-up features some of the best folks he’s worked with that happen to be some of the best, most clever, most subversive, funny voices in comedy.

That includes:

  • Fred Armisen
  • Reggie Watts
  • Girl God
  • Natalie Palamides
  • Caleb Hearon
  • Moses Storm
  • Brandon Wardell
  • Ian Karmel
  • David Gborie

It’s such a stellar line-up and you can see all of that for only $20. Go get your tickets for Lance Bangs Presents @ The Elysian on 9/2 right here.

Please Enjoy Caleb Hearon’s Recounting Being Perfectly Roasted by a Child

June 16, 2022
News
Caleb Hearon, comedy central, stand up comedy

The fact that Caleb Hearon doesn’t have any sort of album or special is borderline criminal. Hearon is one of the sharpest comics on stage these days and if you haven’t gone and seen him yet, that is also borderline criminal. Hearon has a polish and panache and a sensibility balanced between acerbic and aspirational. Again, go see him take the mic wherever you can, even if it’s out of your way.

For now, in this moment, you’ll have to settle with Hearon’s Comedy Central Featuring set that just dropped today. It’s just a taste of Hearon’s comedy stylings, but it’s a great one that has the story of being comedically skewered by a student of his (ironic considering Hearon’s own roasting skills in his youth)

Watch and see Caleb Hearon’s set here.

The Year of Joel Kim Booster Continues with This First Look at His Netflix Hour Special “Psychosexual”

June 16, 2022
News
comedy special, joel kim booster, netflix, psychosexual, stand up comedy

You’ve probably heard the name Joel Kim Booster plenty over the last several months (and rightfully so). His movie, Fire Island, is already one of the most talked about, well received rom coms of the year and Booster himself has been blazing whatever stage he takes with his richly, incisive and deliciously sardonic stand-up.

In less than a week, you’ll get the latest milestone for this year of Joel Kim Booster when his very first hour special, Psychosexual, arrives on Netflix. From the looks of it, Booster has whipped quite the hour for this first special, which will undoubtedly will be the first of many.

See for yourself here, then look for it on Netflix on Tues. Jun. 21st.

Pick of the Day: NY Laughs @ Little Island (in NYC) 6/16

June 14, 2022
News
gina yashere, joyelle johnson, kenice mobley, LeClerc Andre, little island, ny comedy, ny laughs, stand up comedy

Though, technically, Summer doesn’t officially start until a week from now, it definitely feels like it’s here (thanks to climate change?). That definitely means there’s plenty of outdoor happenings that you can (and should) attend, especially in places that have seasons that aren’t LA.

For NYC, the season for live events at the man made treasure Little Island (near Chelsea/Meat Packing District) is subsequently upon as well and they’ve got big comedy show to help kick off this round of programming. NYLaughs, a wonderful org putting up free comedy shows all around the city, is putting up Gina Yashere, Kenice Mobley, LeClerc Andre, and Joyelle Johnson this Thurs. Jun. 16th at 9:30PM ET at Little Island.

That’s the sort of line-up you’d normally have to pay a 2 drink minimum for while packed in tight as possible in a dark, cramped room. Instead, you can watch this completely for free while pretty much standing on the Hudson.
