Pick of the Day: Ground Game LA Winter Fundraiser 12/10

The election is well past us now and Biden is going to be 46th POTUS, which means Trump won’t thankfully be President anymore. In LA, a lot of progressive measures/candidates got voted in. Yet, as you might very well know, there is plenty of more organizing, strategizing, mobilizing that has to be done to actually affect real change.

Ground Game LA has been a great mutual aid LA org that will be crucial going forward in instituting and sustaining said change. Thus, they’re putting on a virtual Winter Fundraiser that will not only include appearances by newly elected LA councilwoman Nithya Raman, but a stacked row of LA comedy favorites such as D’arcy Carden, Ira Madison, Quinta Brunson, Adam Conover, Mal Blum, Nicole Byer, and Rhea Butcher.

Some of the best comedy live-streams have been benefit fundraisers, especially when Nithya has been involved, and this Ground Game LA Winter Fundraiser should be no different. The live-stream is set for Dec. 10th at 7PM PT/10PM ET and donations will be accepted for access (you can even stream for free if you’d like).

Undoubtedly, you’re exploring the vast swaths of content across whatever streaming services you have access to while in quarantine. Perhaps, one of the things you should dip into is HBO’s latest sketch series, A Black Lady Sketch Show.

If you do so this week, you’re quite in luck as Variety’s Streaming Room is putting up a roundtable discussion live-stream featuring creator/EP/writer/star Robin Thede, stars Quinta Brunson & Gabrielle Dennis, writer/star Ashley Nicole Black, guest star Angela Bassett & director Dime Davis. They’ll revisit some of the series’ best moments and give the inside look at what was going on behind the scenes/the thought process behind something like a “Bad Bitch Support Group”.

Variety Streaming Room’s A Black Lady Sketch Show Roundtable Discussion is set for Fri. Aug. 14th at 4PM PT/7PM ET. RSVP for the live-stream here.

SYFY’s Magical Girl Friendship Squad Has Quite the Cast

Before we even get into the series’ premise, for something that was part of a late night animation block on SYFY that’s now getting upgraded into its own short-form series, it has a pretty stacked cast:

The series leads are Quinta Brunson and Anna Akana along with regulars Ana Gasteyer and Matteo Lane.

Recurring characters will be voiced by Christine Baranski, Manny Jacinto, Helen Hong, Eric Bauza, and Sarah Squirm/Sherman.

Guest voice stars will include Jason Mantzoukas, Paget Brewster, Vella Lovell, Jamie Loftus, and Patti Harrison.

Multiple characters will be voiced by Stephanie Sheh (Sailor Moon), Taylor Ortega (Kim Possible) and Daisy Hobbs ( Broadway’s Aladdin)

Pretty swell for a show that only has six 15 minutes episodes ordered, right?

With such a cast, we’re very, very intrigued to seem them in an anime comedy that has “two young women, Alex (Brunson) and Daisy (Akana), who are destined to save the Universe…as soon as they figure out how to pay their rent.”

This could raise the profile of SYFY and their late night Adult-Swim-ish animation block TZGZ where Kelsey Stephanides’ Magical Girl Friendship Squad got its start. It also could further SYFY’s reach into comedy, an area they’ve been seemingly flirting on and off with over the years whether it be with the sci-fi/pop culture series Reactor or the genre bending Happy starring a deranged Christopher Meloni.

We have no doubt that animation will be a big part of new (and old) shows and content that gets made while this pandemic continues on and, as such, we like seeing things like Magical Girl Friendship Squad be part of SYFY’s programming slate.

Without question, Byron Bowers is one of our favorite comedians to watch around town and has been for quite some time. He takes the stage and it is immediately and he immediately has the room captivated and then dives head first into the beautifully dark territory of his life experiences. Also, the supporting acts of Mitra Jouhari, Quinta Brunson, Emma Willmann, DeWayne Perkins, and Caitlin Weierhauser will make this one hell of a great night.

So, as he’ll be headlining at Dynasty Typewriter next month, you should go get your tickets ASAP here ($10 in advance and $15 on day of).
