Pick of the Day: Wolves of Glendale (in NYC) 8/31

August 16, 2022
News
caroline's, eric jackowitz, ethan edenburg, musical comedy, nyc comedy, tom mcgovern, wolves of glendale

The abject absurdity of this world, sometimes, is best coped with by meeting it with some concentrated, even more obtuse absurdity. Melodies and harmonies with a catchy beat doesn’t hurt either.

That’s where you’ll want to tune into the Wolves of Glendale, a newly minted musical comedy trio of Ethan Edenburg, Eric Jackowitz, and Tom McGovern. Their songs are a hysterical reflection of a time so ridiculous that is virtually without precedent within our lifetimes. As perhaps alluded to above, they sure can get your toe tapping with whatever they’re playing.

Most recently, you’ve might have seen them on one of the literally big stages at Netflix Is a Joke Fest, which is saying something considering they were a band only formed earlier this year and, as such, you shouldn’t miss their exclusive night at Caroline’s on Broadway in NYC at the end of the month.

Ethan, Eric, and Tom will take the stage as The Wolves of Glendale on Wed. Aug. 31st at 7PM ET, which will be quite the amazing setting to see them (you’ll probably never see live music as intimately as in a comedy club). Tickets are $20 (plus a 2 drink min.) and you really ought to get your tickets here now.

bassem youssef, conan o'brien, jenny slate, Jimmy O. Yang, john mulaney, Mo Amer, ms. pat, ny comedy fest, nyc comedy, tracy morgan, wanda sykes

Not too too far from now, The NY Comedy Festival will take over NYC’s 5 boroughs to bring NYC even more comedy than the cornucopia it already has on a nightly basis. One of the real perks of NY Comedy Fest is the headliners they assemble, which, for this year will include the likes of Conan O’Brien, John Mulaney, Wanda Sykes, Jenny Slate, Ms. Pat, Mo Amer, Bassem Youssef, Jimmy O. Yang, and Tracy Morgan.

Of course, this is just a tiny sliver of what the entire line-up of the festival will be come Nov. 7th-Nov. 13th. If you want to get your tickets as soon as possible, you can use the presale code “NYCF” starting at 12PM ET on Fri. Aug. 19th at nycomedyfestival.com.

Pick of the Day: Depths of Wikipedia (in NYC) 8/23 & 8/26

August 12, 2022
News
annie rauwerda, caveat, depths of wikipedia, life world, nyc comedy, wikipedia

Born out of a passion project during quarantine, one Annie Rauwerda has excavated many of the most intriguing nooks, cracks, crevices, corners, and, of course, depths, for her creation, Depths of Wikipedia. Shooting up to be a popular hub for what’s most fun on the Internet’s favorite library, Depths of Wikipedia has since become a live show that Annie tours with, even coming out all the way to LA at Dynasty Typewriter just last week. We caught the wonder that she has curated from her extensive combing through all of Wikipedia and it was one of the more delightful things we’ve seen throughout 2022.

So, NYC, you shouldn’t miss your chance to see two live editions of Depths of Wikipedia, happening in both Manhattan and Brooklyn, this month. Tues. Aug. 23rd at 6:30PM ET, Annie will take over Caveat in LES and even livestream it. Tickets are $20 for in-person and $10 to stream it from anywhere. Fri. Aug. 26th at 8PM ET, Annie will go to the heart of Gowanus, Brooklyn to bring Depths of Wikipedia to Life World. Tickets are only $15 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Also, if you’re curious about becoming a Wikipedia editor, Annie does a pretty great job of selling everyone of joining into that wondrous community.

Pick of the Day: Maybe This Is Something: A Workshop Series with Your Kooky Friend Aparna

August 11, 2022
News
aparna nancherla, nyc comedy

In the ongoing march of all of our favorite comedians returning to the stage at this side of the pandemic, it’s should be such uplifting news to find that Aparna Nancherla, one of comedy’s very best/sharpest/calming/reassuring voices these days, is returning to in-person stand-up.

As she wants to get her touring sea legs back, Aparna has lined up three dates at Union Hall in Brooklyn that will be delightfully called Maybe This Is Something: A Workshop Series with Your Kooky Friend Aparna. There will be special guests as well, which, you ought to know, will be some of NYC’s finest.

Both Sept. 14th @ 7:30PM & Sept. 25th at 5:30PM are sold out, but there are still tickets available for Wed. Sept. 28th at 7:30PM for $12. So, you better stop reading this sentence and go get your tickets now if you want to go (and you absolutely should).

Pick of the Day: Bill Burr (in NYC) 8/10

August 8, 2022
News
bill burr, city winery, forest hills, nyc comedy, queens, stand up comedy

The one and only Bill Burr in back in NYC this week.

With Live at Red Rocks having been just released on Netflix just a few weeks ago, Burr undoubtedly has a new hour that you can catch live and in-person if you head on down to Queens. There’s about a million and a half things that have happened since Burr recorded that special and, of course, he has his sharp, signature satiric take on all of it (on top of figuring out how to not be like his dad with very own kids).

City Winery is putting on Burr at Forest Hills Stadium in Forest Hills, Queens this Wed. Aug. 10th at 7:30PM ET and they’re still tickets available if you’ve got a cool $175 in your back pocket. Get tickets while you still can, if you’ve got the cash, here.

Pick of the Day: Sam Jay (in NYC) 8/12-8/14

August 2, 2022
News
caroline's, nyc comedy, sam jay, stand up comedy

Whether you know her from her unflinchingly observed and razor sharp stand-up or her even more exacting comedic perspective on her show Pause with Sam Jay or seeing her writing on SNL, Sam Jay is one of those rare comedians that is actually deserving of being described as a force of nature.

Sam Jay changes the energy the whole room whenever she’s on stage and is mastered at using tension to the perfect comedic degree, which is why you shouldn’t miss your chance to see her headline live at Caroline’s on Broadway this month. In fact, she’s doing a whole weekend of shows from Fri. Aug. 12th-Sun. Aug. 14th.

Tickets start at $35 plus 2 drink minimum and you can (and should) go get your tickets while you still can at Carolines.com

Pick of the Day: So, That Just Happened with Rachel Kaly, an Album Recording (in NYC) 7/30

July 29, 2022
News
album recording, brooklyn, gowanus, nyc comedy, stand up comedy, weird comedy

Tall tales at a slow burn are Rachel Kaly‘s speciality and there’s almost no one that does it quite like Rachel. It’s always a simultaneously spellbinding, yet laid-back journey that Kaly takes any and all of her audiences on.

The idea that Rachel is going to explicitly do something “weird” she be even more incentive to any level of curiosity to any sort of comedy fan to go out and find out what the hell she has up her sleeves (especially since they’re probably short sleeves on a t-shirt). Rachel is not only doing an album recording in Brooklyn at Gowanus’ secret performance venue Life World, but she’s is going, as we alluded to, “weird”, which will no doubt keep you guessing even as you’re watching the show in the most delightful way possible.

So, That Just Happened with Rachel Kaly is happening this Sat. Jul. 30th at 7PM ET and you better snag your tickets right now. They’re only $7 and it’s probably the best bargain you’re going to get in all of NYC this weekend. Go get them here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 121: Olivia Amerling & Comedy Fandom Turned Dedicated Comedy Producing

July 20, 2022
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
jak knight, mo'nique, netflix, nyc comedy, olivia amerling, producing comedy

When it comes to producing a comedy show, it’s ideal that you have someone who loves comedy just as much as the performers do, but, for their own reasons, would rather not take the stage and just work behind the scenes. Olivia Amerling has emerged as a go-to NYC comedy producer with three weekly shows on her plate, Seance Comedy at Easy Lover, I Made You a Playlist at Three Diamond Door and Drule at Fette Sau, after just being a hardcore comedy fan that would show up at as many shows as she possibly could. We go through NYC comedy, especially neighborhood specific NYC comedy, and break down what she does to make her shows staples in New York

Also, “hot” takes on Mo’Nique getting a hour Netflix special, the passing of Jak Knight, and more.

Follow Olivia @olivemartini on IG as well as her shows @seancecomedy, @playlistcomedy, and @drulecomedy.

Pick of the Day: A Night with Dylan Adler (in NYC) 8/29

July 19, 2022
News
brooklyn, Dylan Adler, littlefield, nyc comedy

In the not so distant future, it’s not hard to imagine that the incredibly multi-talented, hilarious, and acrobatic Dylan Adler is so busy headlining everywhere that you might not get to see him do an hour in NYC all that easily. NYC (and pretty much anyone who has seen him) has become an immediate fan and his silly, but bombastically dark and vulnerable comedy has captured the attention of the whole of NYC comedy.

With that said, you shouldn’t miss your latest chance to catch him headline next month at Littlefield in Brooklyn. A Night with Dylan Adler is set for Mon. Aug. 29th at 8PM ET. Tickets are $12 you really ought to go get them right here right now.

Pick of the Day: Kate Berlant Is Kate (in NYC) 8/20-10/8

July 18, 2022
News
bo burnham, connelly theater, kate berlant, nyc comedy, solo show
Kate Berlant, often thought by many to be a crucial trailblazer in this era of comedy, has achieved such notions by her persistent experimentation in comedy with form, expectation, perspective, and subversion. For the last several months, she has treated LA to the delight of cultivating a solo show that NYC is now going to delight in the fruits of that labor.
Called Kate Berlant Is Kate, Kate will be running the show for an extensive run at the East Village’s Connelly Theater with Bo Burnham set as director (in case you needed some extra incentive for some reason, though you really shouldn’t). It’ll run from August 20th-October 8th, specifically going up at 7PM Mondays through Saturdays with a matinee performance at 3PM on Saturdays. There will be a single Sunday performance on Sept. 4th at 7PM and the show will go dark on Mon. Sept. 5th.
By the way, Kate herself says of this show: All my previous work has been a pale shadow, a humiliation, an impotent suggestion always gesturing toward, yet never quite arriving… now I’m here. And it feels really good.
Tickets starts at $31 for previews and $47 after opening night 9/7. Go get your tickets for this important milestone in comedy before they sell out at kateshow.net.

Pick of the Day: We Still Like You (in LA & NYC) 7/14 & 7/20

July 12, 2022
News
allen strickland williams, allison rose, courtney mcginnis, jake noll, john rosenberger, los angeles comedy, melody kamali, nyc comedy, rachel weeks, rufat agayev, sammy mowrey, storytelling, terence hartnett, tyjuan lewis, tyler snodgrass, we still like you

Though storytelling is no stranger to comedy, We Still Like You still stands out as one of the most original and daring comedic storytelling shows that we’ve ever seen and we’re so glad to find that it has survived to this side of the pandemic and is still putting up live shows around the country.

For the uninitiated, We Still Like You not only puts comedians in a position to tell a very personal story, but one where they are very clearly not the hero with the audience reminding them, at the end, in unison, that, “We still like you.” Cathartic and downright hysterical, you should never miss any one of these.

Lucky for both coasts that there are NYC and LA shows coming up.

7/14 @ Central Organic (in Brooklyn) w/Courtney Magginis, Melody Kamali, Rufat Agayev, Terence Hartnett, and Grace Freud w/Tyler Snodgrass and John Rosenberger hosting.

7/20 @ Secret LA Spot w/Sammy Mowrey, Tyjuan Lewis, Jake Noll, Allison Rose, Rachel Weeks, and Allen Strickland Williams w/Danii Gallegos & Tyler Snodgrass hosting (DM @westilllikeyou to RSVP/get address)

Pick of the Day: Jena Friedman-Ladykiller Special Taping (in NYC) 7/15

July 5, 2022
News
comedy special, free taping, jena friedman, nyc comedy, peacock, stand up comedy, tv taping

Jena Friedman was already one of the most crucial voices in comedy, dedicating her needle-sharp material to topics and issues that have only become more pressing over the last few weeks. When it comes to the agency and freedom of women, Jena stands tall with some of the best, dark jokes being told on stages today or on her series, Soft Focus or Indefensible.

So, Jena is taping an hour special, Ladykiller, next week for Peacock that will be a great, long-awaited follow-up to American C*nt. There will be two tapings on Fri. Jul. 15th at 7PM ET & 9PM ET at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. It’s free to attend so long as you’re fully vaccinated. Go reserve tickets here.

Pick of the Day: Alison Leiby: Oh God, A Show About Abortion (in NYC in August & LA 7/20)

June 29, 2022
News
abortion, abortion rights, alison leiby, cherry lane theatre, comedy show, largo, los angeles comedy, nyc comedy, solo show

Of course, Alison Leiby didn’t know that her acclaimed solo show that gets into the humanity of her experience with abortion, “Oh God, A Show About Abortion”, would just happen to coincide with the current Supreme Court guaranteeing themselves on being on the wrong side of history by overturning Roe vs. Wade, yet, here we are.

Leiby’s now-more-crucial-than-ever show, presented by Ilana Glazer and directed by Lila Neugebauer, has ascending through NYC comedy into an extensive Off Broadway run at the Cherry Lane Theatre that just got extended with a three week run in August running M-F from 8/8-8/26. For LA folks, there will be an exclusive night at Largo at the Coronet Theatre on Wed. Jul. 20th at both 8PM PT & 10PM PT.

You can get tickets for any and all of these dates for Alison Leiby: Oh God, A Show About Abortion at ohgodshow.com.

Oh, if you’re looking for upcoming comedy shows that are supporting abortion funds, we got a page for you here.

It should be pretty clear by now that, for several big chunks of the country, abortion under any circumstances will become illegal. Pick of the Day: Justice John Hodgman LIVE (in NYC) 6/29

June 22, 2022
News
free shows, jesse thorn, john hodgman, judge john hodgman, live comedy, nyc, nyc comedy

Justice John Hodgman has always stood for the people where other courts, whether government sanctioned or simply on daytime television, fall short. This Summer, the Honorable Justice John Hodgman is coming to the people more than he ever has with a big live episode at NYC’s venerable Lincoln Center.

The problems that are very valid, but other lawyers and legal professionals would deem to banal for a courtroom will be heard by Hodgman and his bailiff Jesse Thorn on Wed. Jun. 29th at 8PM ET. Best of all, this show is completely FREE to attend (a true treat when it comes to being at the Lincoln Center). You can just show up or snag one of a limited amount of advance reservations.

Also, if you would like the chance to have your day in Hodgman’s court and solve that nagging problem that all your friends don’t want to hear about anymore in front of big NYC live audience, submit your claim here.

Pick of the Day: Fun & Dumb Improv Festival (in NYC) 7/8-7/10

June 21, 2022
News
brooklyn, brooklyn comedy collective, fun and dumb improv festival, improv comedy, nyc comedy
The danger of gathering in close proximity over the last couple of years has been devastating to live performance, especially when it comes to long form improvisational comedy. Improv is a major pillar to live comedy and flourished before lockdown, but has only just recently been finding its footing on this side of the pandemic having to deal with venue closures, performers moving away, etc.
Thankfully, the Brooklyn Comedy Collective is cooking up a celebratory return for improv in full force, which is great to hear since we have no idea if and when the next Del Close Marathon will be. From July 8th-10th, BCC will have over 80 shows from not only from NYC, but all around the globe to perform on their stages deep in Brooklyn. That’ll include such renowned teams as BABY WANTS CANDY, LADIES WHO RANCH, BORABISH, SHAMILTON, and way more! You can check out the entire schedule here.
“Fun and Dumb is all about bringing the improv community back together,” says BCC Artitistic Director Philip Markle. “We’re thrilled to have teams joining us all the way from Berlin & Chicago – as well as the other NYC comedy theaters like The Squirrel, Magnet, The PIT, Rubbish Comedy, and the former Upright Citizens Brigade.”
Day passes are going for $20 and you can (and very much should) go snag them here.

Pick of the Day: Jes Tom + Tessa Skara Present Corporate Pride: A Comedy Show (in NYC) 6/26

June 17, 2022
News
bell house, brooklyn, corporate pride, emily dayton evans, gara lonning, hannah einbinder, jes tom, jess henderson, nyc comedy, pride month, sabrina wu, Spike Einbinder, tessa skara

For the purposes of both profit and avoiding the projected fear of being canceled, corporations across every stock exchange have gone all in on showing their investment into queer inclusivity by redoing their logos, pumping out loads of rainbow emblazoned merchandise, and, above all, making sure that their social media accounts are showing LGBTQ+ support.

Often, it becomes more about them than actually celebrating Pride itself, which is why two of NYC’s leading queer comedians, Jes Tom and Tess Skara, are presenting a “Brand Affiliated* (*not actually affiliated with any Brands)” comedy and drag show at The Bell House on Sun. Jun. 26th at 7:30PM PT.

Showing their corporate pride for PRIDE will be more stellar LGBTQ+ comedians including:

  • Hannah Einbinder
  • Spike Einbinder
  • Jess Henderson
  • Sabrina Wu
  • Gara Lonning
  • Emily Dayton Evans

Tickets are $15 and make sure you’re doing your part for Corporate Pride™ by buying them right here.

Pick of the Day: The Crossword Show with Zach Sherwin 7/19 & 7/20 (in NYC)

June 13, 2022
News
caveat, crossword show, nyc comedy, zach sherwin

After the last two or so years, you’ve probably gotten into crossword puzzles or some form of them or even just had a period of quarantine where you got into it because you were looking something that wasn’t the news.

With all of that said, the mystery of crossword puzzles doesn’t just have to be limited to solving it over coffee or while on break or while hiding the bathroom during your 15. The ever clever Zach Sherwin has devised both one of the most astonishing displays of linguistics and a damn fun live show where a panel of comedians (and the audience) solve a crossword puzzle in real time. Sherwin exquisitely weaves master level wordplay, original rap, and so much more into an experience that will leave you dazzled and wondering, for quite some time, how he came up with all of it.

Zach is bringing The Crossword Show out east to LES’ favorite comedy venue, Caveat in NYC on Tues. Jul. 19th & Wed. Jul. 20th at 7PM ET. Tickets are $15 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: The Lesbian Agenda with Sophie Santos (in NYC & LA) 6/13 & 6/28

Before even acknowledging that its Pride Month, any time of the year is a great time of year to catch Sophie Santos‘ quest for queer dominance via her creation, The Lesbian Agenda. That said, it’s Pride and it’s an especially good time to go support great queer artists of every background, especially when it comes to live comedy.

The Lesbian Agenda has already taken over both coasts by firmly planting roots in NYC and LA, which is a pretty great start to cultural domination in the U.S.

In fact, there are upcoming dates for both cities with The Lesbian Agenda taking over The Bell House in Brooklyn on Mon. Jun. 13th and Dynasty Typewriter in LA on Tues. Jun. 28th, both at 7:30PM local time. Both have incredibly stacked, festival-worthy line-ups including:

Pick of the Day: Rape Victims Are Horny Too Album Taping (in NYC) 6/24 & 6/25

June 7, 2022
News
album taping, Dylan Adler, kelly bachman, musical comedy, nyc comedy

It’s pretty clear at this point that Kelly Bachman and Dylan Adler have carved out their place in the NYC comedy scene for their hilarity through daring vulnerability (also, you might know/have seen Dylan do a standing backflip and Kelly call out monster Harvey Weinstein to his face). They carry on the torch of truth in comedy to new frontiers, especially with the show they wrote and perform together, Rape Victims Are Horny Too.

There is no subterfuge to that title. Kelly and Dylan are both rape survivors and have, as an act of healing and holding up a beacon for other survivors to not feel alone, have written a very, very funny musical about that part of their lives. They’ve honed the show over the years and are going to put the show officially on wax with a live album taping this month. Undoubtedly, this will be a great addition to bold comedy specials cut from similar cloth including Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette and Cameron Esposito’s Rape Jokes.

There are two tapings of Rape Victims Are Horny Too at the Lower East Side’s Caveat on Fri. Jun. 24th & Sat. Jun. 25th at 9:30PM ET. Tickets are $15 and you best go get them now.

Pick of the Day: Pitch A Movie: The Show Where Comedians Make Up Movies on the Fly! (in NYC) 6/11

June 1, 2022
News
brittany carney, brooklyn, clare o'kane, cobra club, dave ross, midnight gardeneners league, mike hanford, nyc comedy, pitch a movie

Top Gun: Maverick just broke box office records (and probably will continue to do so) further encouraging studios to not take on anything original or hear fresh pitches. In fact, if you’re wondering how or when you’d see any new releases that are truly original or out of the box at your local movie theater, there’s not a real great answer for that.

With that in mind, DC’s only comedy secret society, The Midnight Gardeners League, has come up with a show where you’ll get to hear such originality as it’ll showcase great comedians pitching jokes off of their material only to be judged by a “renowned film auteur”. This first NYC outing will feature what we’re sure will be blockbuster movie pitches from a grand line-up of Brittany Carney, Mike Hanford, Clare O’Kane, and Dave Ross.

Mark down Sat. Jun. 11th at 8PM ET to be at Brooklyn’s Cobra Club to hear things that should very likely be greenlit rather than be subjected to more mandatory MCU offerings.

Tickets are $10 and you can (and should) get them here.

Pick of the Day: In Stitches: A Comedy Fundraiser for The Brooklyn Free Clinic (in NYC) 5/21

May 16, 2022
News
aparna nancherla, bell house, brittany carney, brooklyn, brooklyn free clinic, garrett williams, Ike Ufomadu, jes tom, jo firestone, mary beth barone, nyc comedy, Rachel Coster, stand up

If you’ve read the news in any of the time that, frankly, you’ve been alive, you probably felt lost, beset with how much hurt and violence there is in the world. Just this past weekend, there was so much gun violence across the country that it’s hard to parse how many people got shot up where in America and when exactly that happened.

That said, there are still good folks in the world putting care and concern out for other people. Some of the people work at the Brooklyn Free Clinic, a student run free clinic that boosts health care access through the borough via “service and education” by way of SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

In Stitches is a big time fundraiser to be held at Brooklyn’s venerable comedy venue, The Bell House, on Sat. May 21st at 2:30PM ET (w/ 1:30PM ET cocktail hour/silent auction) that seeks to support their truly selfless efforts and the good roots they plant in and throughout their borough. NYC comedy finest in Mary Beth Barone, Brittany Carney, Rachel Coster, Jes Tom, Ike Ufomadu, Garrett Williams, Jo Firestone & Aparna Nancherla, and host Jared Waters will be assemble for this edition of In Stitches.

Admission for In Stitches starts at $15 for students, $20 for GA, then goes up from there if you want to support the Brooklyn Free Clinic even more (and gets some great swag while you’re at it).

Get tickets, more details, etc. here.

Pick of the Day: Nore Davis Album Release Party + Comedy Show (in NYC) 6/1

May 12, 2022
News
brooklyn, comedy album, nore davis, nyc comedy, release party

June will be a grand time of year as a brand new Nore Davis album is coming to us all. Nore has been one of the best voices in comedy for many years running now and one of the few comedians to actually pull off recording an hour of comedy to release off of Zoom. Davis’ heart, sincerity, and unabashed playfulness are just a few of the reasons why June 1st, the release date of Nore: ノリー should be a big to do on your calendar.

Nore will be doing this fifth album in such a special way with “a limited edition, 14-page comic book that tells the legendary, action packed story of one comic’s transformation from Nore Davis to NORI (ノリー translated)”.

This whole release will be celebrated at a very secret Brooklyn location on Wed. Jun. 1st at 8PM ET that will have both a stellar stand-up show and after party. Admission is free, but you’re going to have to RSVP starting on May 16th 8AM PT/11AM ET. We have no doubt that tickets will get snatched up real quick, so set a reminder for this as well.

As winter weather is coming to a close, there’s more of a chance to have some lovely outdoor shows in NYC once more. In fact, the chance for one of the most fun outdoor shows that came from lockdown times, Fools Circle, is getting ready for a return to the great outdoors of Prospect Park where it first rose in prominence.

Host Teklai will return to preside over the storied Saturday afternoon/evening comedy/music/hang, which will likely have a start time sometime around the sun going down on Sat. May 21st. For exact start times and locations as well as which of NYC’s finest will be joining in for jokes and jams, follow @fools.circle on IG.
