Pick of the Day: The State: Breakin’ Hearts & Dippin’ Balls (in NYC) 10/16 & 10/17

August 15, 2023
News
nyc comedy, palladium times square, sketch comedy, the state

Legendary (and yes, it’s appropriate here) sketch group, The State, comprised, for this night, of Ken Marino, David Wain, Kerri Kenney, Joe Lo Truglio, Michael Ian Black, Kevin Allison, and Michael Patrick Jann are getting back together for an exclusive tour (that might blossom into something bigger maybe with Thomas Lennon, Robert Ben Garant, and Todd Holoubeck?) maturely called Breakin’ Hearts & Dippin’ Balls. The ramifications of The State reassembling are so massive, which is partially why it happens so rarely (that and the fact that each individual member is quite successful on their own comedy path).

Thus far, they’ve only got dates in Denver and NYC lined-up, but that means you kind of should go out of your way to make sure you catch what you can of the Breakin’ Hearts & Dippin’ Balls tour. For New Yorkers, The State will be taking over Palladium Times Square on Oct. 16th & 17th with tickets going on sale this Wed. at 10AM ET/7AM PT (use the code “STATE” for early access) starting at $67.

Set a reminder and go snag those tickets here.

Pick of the Day: Christina Catherine Martinez (in NYC) 9/24

August 14, 2023
News
christina catherine martinez, experimental comedy, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

Unflinching in her quest to distill the most nuanced of ideologies into abject tomfoolery, Christina Catherine Martinez is taking her preposterously sublime comedy across the country again, all the way to NYC. We here in Southern California are blessed to see the critically acclaimed comedian in all sorts places high and low, from the esteemed REDCAT all the way to an out-of-the-way dive bar.

Martinez will be taking over one of Brooklyn’s beloved comedy establishments, Littlefield, next month to do, well, whatever she wants (which might include some intellectual dissection of Taco Bell and/or unbridled satirization of the gender binary). The brilliant River Ramirez will be joining Christina for this special evening of the highest and lowest brow comedy together.

Christina is set to play Littlefield on Sun. Sept. 24th at 8PM. Tickets are only $15.54 and we highly suggest you get them here.

Pick of the Day: Babe Motel Pays Their Dues (in NYC) 9/13

August 10, 2023
News
babe motel, brooklyn, littlefield, nyc comedy, sketch comedy

We’ve been lucky in LA to have the likes of silly, yet irrepressibly clever of Babe Motel going up all around town on a regular basis. Haley Stiel, Avery Girion, and Kel Cripe have faithfully brought their rambunctious spirit on stage time and again for a couple years now, but such spirit should be shared with more folks.

With that in mind, they’re returning to NYC to do a “solo trio show”, which could mean any number of things, but all of them pretty damn fun (even if the show is called Babe Motel Pays Their Dues). Also, an amuse bouche of comedy from Hayden Johnson and Richard Perez will be served first for this special NYC Babe Motel show.

Babe Motel Pays Their Dues is set for Wed. Sept. 13th at 8PM. Tickets are $15.54 and we highly suggest getting them here.

Pick of the Day: Arti Gollapudi Performs the Real Book Like a Real B*tch (in NYC) 8/8

August 3, 2023
News
Arti Gollapudi, joe's pub, musical comedy, nyc comedy, solo show, storytelling

One of the most marvelously spirited comedians in NYC, Arti Gollapudi, is bringing her past and present to the very immediate future in what should be a beaming delight of a raunchy, yet classy affair at NYC’s venerable Joe’s Pub.

For what she’s calling “Arti Gollapudi Performs the Real Book Like a Real B*tch“, Gollapudi will be doing jazz standards with some of her favorite musicians throughout the city (canteenkilla, Talk Bazaar, Syl Dubenion, and Koa Ho) while weaving in her stories of trying to find love and chronic uterus pain and everything else in between in the life and times of Arti. Very special guests El Kempner (Palehound) and Karolena Theresa will be joining her throughout the evening too.

So, get your best jazz attire, get your $15 tickets (plus 2 drink or 1 food item min.), and head to NoHo to the one and only Joe’s Pub on Tues. Aug. 8th at 7PM to catch what will likely be the most unforgettable night of jazz and comedy that you’ve seen in quite some time.

Pick of the Day: “Close Calls” Near-Death Stories LIVE Taping (in NYC) 8/4

August 1, 2023
News
brooklyn, close calls, kevin casey white, live podcast, lizzy cassidy, nyc comedy

Remember when I Survived was the one of the most talked about shows and our current obsession with true crime had only just gotten started? T’was such an innocent time compared to now where people wanted to be captivated about stories of the living, despite the world around them doing everything it can to have them die earlier than they would have liked.

For our money, those stories are still pretty astounding and given a pretty tried and true formula of “fascinating story” + comedy = splendid podcast, NYC comedians Kevin Casey White and Lizzy Cassidy have essentially made a comedy version of I Survived with their podcast Close Calls, which actually makes stories of surviving natural disasters, freak accidents, murderers, and more a more manageable level of terrifying (and all the more entertaining).

They’ll be doing a special live version so you can share in the gasps and guffaws together with a crowd at Brooklyn’s The Gutter this Fri. Aug. 4th at 8PM. Tickets are only $10 and you really ought to go get them here, have yourself a great start to this weekend, and, perhaps, gain a new appreciation for living.

Pick of the Day: Pee Wee’s Big Adventure Alamo Bike Tour (in NYC) 8/5, 8/7, 8/9

July 31, 2023
News
alamo drafthouse, nyc comedy, paul reubens, pee wee's big adventure

Today brought the sad news of the passing of Paul Reubens, known and beloved by millions as Pee Wee Herman. His iconic performance in Tim Burton’s iconic film debut of Pee Wee’s Big Adventure will live on in cinema history for ages to come as something that was able to put a smile on a face of nearly anyone who watched it, no matter their age (far before Pixar figured out how to do that).

The good folks at Alamo Drafthouse already had a very special run of Pee Wee’s Big Adventure screenings at their NYC theaters (Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island) complete with the one and only legendary bike.

Unsurprisingly, tickets for the Brooklyn and Manhattan screenings are sold out, but there are a literal handful of tickets left for the Staten Island screening on Sat. Aug. 5th at 7PM for $15.50. At the very least, we’re betting the bike will probably be in the lobby for you to admire as well as honor Reubens’ memory.

Never one to disappoint, Alamo Drafthouse made a great little trailer for this very special event:

Pick of the Day: Blake Rosier’s Bad Show (in NYC) 8/5

July 27, 2023
News
blake rosier, brooklyn, nyc comedy, talk show, union hall

We’re thrilled that Blake Rosier, one of the bolder, daring comedians (e.g. doing shows with permitted tomato throwing at the performers, performing/living in theaters for a whole week) in the LA comedy scene right now, is currently on tour across the country. Rosier’s penchant for experimentation and knack for absurdity and commitment to vulnerability have made for some of the most memorable, enthralling, and hilarious shows we’ve seen in awhile.

Come next week, Rosier’s tour with his “bad” show will find its way to Union Hall in Brooklyn and New Yorkers can delight in Blake’s special kind of controlled chaos. Blake Rosier’s Bad Show will take place on Sat. Aug. 5th at 10PM and you ought to nab your tickets at $15 a pop here.

Pick of the Day: Raaaatscraps 2 Yr. (in NYC) 8/6

July 25, 2023
News
caveat, improv, nyc comedy, raaaatscraps

Since the return of live long form improv in NYC, Raaaatscraps has dutifully filled in the gap of NYC comedy needing a marquee improv show with scenes based off of esteemed guest monologist (you guys remember ASSSSCAT, right?) that gives New Yorkers top tier improv every week. That was an especially tall order considering UCB’s absence in NYC for the last three years (don’t worry, there’s a new space coming to Manhattan later this year) and the coming and going of many a comedy venue.

That said, Raaaatscraps has planted its roots at Caveat and simulcasts their live, in-person performances and have been making Sunday nights an improv in NYC, especially in LES for quite some time now. They’ll be celebrating two years of being one of NYC’s go to improv shows on Sun. Aug. 6th at their normally slotted time of 7:30PM ET/4:30PM PT. Tickets will still be $8 and they will very likely have an unbelievably special monologist for this one.

Go get your tickets right now right here.

Pick of the Day: Secret Third Thing (in NYC) 7/27

July 24, 2023
News
brooklyn, nyc comedy, rubulad, secret third thing, variety show

In the vast NYC comedy scene, there are a plethora of comedy clubs and theaters and even more bars that will host comedy nights throughout the five boroughs (though mostly in Manhattan and Brooklyn). As far as stranger spaces for comedy go, there are some, but they are precious and we wish utilized a little more often.

That’s what we’re glad to find a comedy variety show happening in a community art space in Bushwick, the fantastical Rubulad (just take a gander at their IG and you’ll see what we’re talking about). Secret Third Thing is the name of the evening that gathers comedians of all ilks, cartoonists, musicians, and more to convene for a beautifully hilarious and ephemeral happening in Brooklyn.

This edition of Secret Third Thing is happening this Thurs. at Jul. 27th at 8PM with the talents of:

Will Duncan
Annie Blackman
Fareeha Khan
Felipe Di Poi Tamargo
The harsh noise, nonsense, and deep jams of GROOMING
The smooth groovings of your DJ – DJ Jenny Rabies
All hosted by Siah

Tickets are only $12.71 and you best go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Club Video (in NYC) 7/29

July 20, 2023
News
club video, experimental film, nyc comedy, short film

When it comes to making community out of watching weird comedy videos, LA has gotten to enjoy the long standing institution of Channel 101 and the IYKYK underground Show & Tell for several years. The same can’t necessarily be said for NYC (even though there was a NYC off-shoot of Channel 101 for awhile).

Thankfully, there are some fine East Coast folks (Whitley Watson, Micah Phillips and Marshall Louise) under the banner of Club Video that are changing that. They’re gathering as many filmmakers (some are beloved NYC comedy staples) as they can to show off all things indie/experimental/comedic when it comes to short form videos/films in and around NYC. They really go out to make it a big time offbeat film hang as they’re going to open their upcoming live, in-person Club Video with three local bands (Star80, Coal Bed, and Matthew Danger Lippman) and then having over 25 different creators/filmmakers share their video wares.

That line-up includes:

Matthew Albino
Andrew Bourne and Connie O’Connor
Kate Costello

Emily Wirth and Annie Downey
spike einbinder
Isaac Ingle & Christine Fiala

Will Duncan & Jake Gibson

This iteration of Club Video is going to happen Sat. Jul. 29th at 8PM in East Williamsburg at 79 Grattan Street. All this show/community/fun is all to be had for just $10 at the door. Get more details and info on their IG @clubvideoshow.

Pick of the Day: Jeff Hiller: Middle Aged Ingenue (in NYC) 8/4, 8/7, 8/9

July 19, 2023
News
jeff hiller, joe's pub, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

For comedy folks in LA and NYC, Jeff Hiller has dazzled crowds for decades with his comedy prowess on intimate, underground stages (remember the early days of UCB?). Thankfully, a plethora of folks have gotten charmed by him on HBO’s Somebody Somewhere. He is on the rise and deservingly so and, as he points out, found overnight success after 25 years of performing for free.

So, it stands to reason that Hiller will take center stage at one of NYC’s most beloved stages, Joe’s Pub, to share a captivating evening of stand-up and stories from his ascension in comedy on stage and screen. Jeff Hiller: Middle Aged Ingenue will offer up 5 shows over 3 nights next month to put the spotlight on Hiller and Hiller alone (and you really ought to be there to see it). Tickets are $25 (plus 2 drink or 1 food item minimum) and one show is already sold out. So, go get your tickets here quick.

Showtimes:

Fri. 8/4 @ 7PM & 9:30PM

Mon. 8/7 @ 7PM & 9:30PM

Wed. 8/9 @ 9:30PM

Pick of the Day: My Momma Told Me (in NYC) 8/26

July 12, 2023
News
bell house, big money players, david gborie, langston kerman, live podcast, nyc comedy

Though saying that there’s “no conspiracy here” is a great way to start a conspiracy, there’s no conspiracy as to how or why David Gborie and Langston Kerman‘s exploration of black conspiracies on their podcast My Momma Told Me is so damn fantastic and popular. Simply, both Gborie and Kerman talking up anything would be an enthralling laugh riot and conspiracy theories, no matter the origin, true or not, are pretty much a never ending gold mine for comedy.

The live tapings of My Momma Told Me are especially a raucous good time and one shouldn’t miss the chance to bear witness to one. For those in NYC, you’re going to get your chance to catch a live My Momma Told Me next month on Sat. Aug. 26th at the Bell House at 7:30PM. Tickets are $25. 42 and you best go get them here before they sell out.

Pick of the Day: Hotsy-Totsy tribute to What We Do In The Shadows (in NYC) 7/13

July 10, 2023
News
burlesque, hotsy totsy, nyc comedy, what we do in the shadows

One of the most unquestionably funny shows in all of television, What We Do in the Shadows, returns for its fifth season on FX/Hulu starting this Thurs/Fri. It also probably one of the more raunchy comedies on TV, even more so than the sequel series to Sex and the City, making it unequivocally one of the few series actually worthy of appointment viewing.

To honor these notions, venerable NYC burlesque troupe Hotsy Totsy are doing a What We Do in the Shadows burleseque tribute at The Slipper Room this Thurs. Jul. 13th at 8PM. This actually lines up perfectly if you’re going to, like most folks, watch WWDITS on Hulu the very next day since the linear TV premiere is on the very same night on FX (then put on Hulu the following day).

Tickets for such a lovely and dark and silly and sexy evening are sold out, but there will be limited tickets at the door, so maybe show up plenty early (or try turning into a bat to sneak in).

Pick of the Day: Charlie and Richard: Secret Project (in NYC) 7/15

July 7, 2023
News
Charlie Bardey, experimental comedy, nyc comedy, richard perez

With I Have To Do This, Richard Perez and Charlie Bardey have already created a comedic treasure. The nuance pulled from even the most minuscule movement or facial expression by Perez in every intimate vignette of a relationship was an absolute laugh riot. Both Perez and Bardey honed I Have To Do This to such a painstaking degree that even the initial setting of a chair on stage is pretty damn funny.

So, it should stand to reason that you’ll want to be witness to their latest collaboration, whatever it may be. Bardey and Perez are indeed putting on another show, though they’re not revealing a single damn thing about it and going so far to call it “Charlie and Richard: Secret Project”. Without a doubt, whatever Charlie and Richard come up with for the Union Hall crowd next Sat. Jul. 15th at 5PM will be something special.

Tickets are $11.55 and you can (and should) go get them here and you really ought to alter whatever your plans were to go see exactly what Charlie and Richard have up their sleeves.

Pick of the Day: Mentioned You. (in NYC) 7/13

July 6, 2023
News
adam gilbert, andrew casertano, caroline hanes, daniela mora, dating show, john kennedy, nyc comedy, ray devito, ryan long, the stand, tommy bayer

A competitive dating show is a tried and true formula. From The Dating Game to F Boy Island, the entertainment value is kind of undeniable, especially in regards into unintentional (or maybe intentionally “unintentional”) comedy that gets run through the gauntlet on the Internet and lives on forever in meme vernacular.

So, why not up the ante with having comedians competing against each other in a dating show format? Well, that’s exactly what is happening with Ethan Terzi’s “Mentioned You.” where 5 comedians square off to win the love (or more accurately, momentary attraction?) of 1 bachelorette. NYC comedy’s Ryan Long, Andrew Casertano, Adam Gilbert, Caroline Hanes, Ray DeVito, and Tommy Bayer will be the suitors with John Kennedy and Daniela Mora presiding over what should be the best version of a Dating Game/Bachelor format.

So, look out for Mentioned You. @ The Stand on Thurs. Jul. 13th at 10PM. Tickets are $18.69 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Kenice Mobley: Don’t Kill Yourself Yet (in NYC) 7/29

June 29, 2023
News
kenice mobley, nyc comedy, solo show, union hall

Of the messages that are crucial to get out to folks these days, “don’t kill yourself yet” is a pretty important one. Thankfully, the hilarious Kenice Mobley has a whole solo show that has that message as its title (and, ostensibly, as the takeaway/moral for the show) coming to NYC soon.

Centered on her experience of having to deal with a near death experience while working through depression and inherited trauma (amongst other wells that comedians often go to for their comedy), Kenice is going to bring her exacting comedic lens to why we should keep staying around on this mortal coil. Opening for Kenice will be NYC comedy favorites Zach Zimmerman, Brittany Carney, and Rohan Padhye.

Kenice Mobley: Don’t Kill Yourself Yet is set for Union Hall on Sat. Jul. 29th at 5PM. Tickets are $11.55 a pop and you really ought to have a formative experience/a great time at a comedy show by buying some here.

Pick of the Day: Reggie Watts: Great Falls Tour (in NYC) 10/17

June 27, 2023
News
bell house, nyc comedy, reggie watts

Before taking on the bandleader gig at The Late Late Show, Reggie Watts galavanted across the globe doing his groundbreaking mixture of uncanny musical verve, stream-of-consciousness improv comedy, and undeniable warmth to mesmerized and delighted audiences. It was then that Watts was mainly based out of NYC and you might seem him pop up in around the five boroughs, but it has been quite some time since New Yorkers have gotten to enjoy a full evening with Reggie.

Well, now that The Late Late Show has come to an end, Watts is going out on the road for his Great Falls Tour and stopping at the hallowed NYC stage at The Bell House on Tues. Oct. 17th. Tickets will absolutely sell out, even at $45 a pop, which is why we’re telling you that they will go on sale this Thurs. Jun. 29th at 12PM ET/9AM PT.

Pick of the Day: Carmen Lynch Special Taping (in NYC) 6/26

June 23, 2023
News
carmen lynch, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

The Comedy Cellar and all its famously associated rooms, The Village Underground and The Fat Black Pussycat, don’t let just anyone tape their special on their hallowed stages as they together represent a few of the most revered stages in all of stand-up comedy.

Carmen Lynch is one such special comedian that is going to get to tape her latest special on such stages. Carmen is endlessly fun to watch and so slyly clever and has been so for many years, making her into an undeniable NYC comedy staple. Lynch also has perfected her act en español as well making her into truly international comedy sensation.

With that in mind, you’re really not going to want to miss the taping of her latest special, the English language version (the Spanish one will be taped in Barcelona in mid-July) at the Village Underground on Mon. Jun. 26th at 8PM & 10PM. Tickets are only $25 (+ 2 drink min.) and you can (and very much should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Jess Salomon: Sad Witch Album Recording (in NYC) 6/29

June 20, 2023
News
album recording, jess salomon, live taping, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

One of the most thoughtful (and, of course, undeniably funny) voices in NYC comedy belongs to one, Jess Salomon. Hailing from both Canada and a career as a U.N. war crimes lawyer, Salomon has a knack for keeping a cheery vibe while very cleverly satirizing the world around her. She has become a staple of the NYC comedy scene and a true joy wherever else she plays (certainly, a bright spot on any line-up we’ve seen her in whenever she’s in LA).

Jess will be taping a full length comedy album next week, Sad Witch, at the revered Brooklyn comedy theater, Union Hall, and you really ought to be in attendance for what should be a damn fine hour of stand-up comedy. There are two shows on Thurs. Jun. 29th, 7:30PM & 10PM, with an opening set from DeAnne Smith. Tickets are only $11.55 and you best go get them here and here, respectively right now.

David Brown and Danny Catlow‘s Squid-Game-ish comedy game show, DON’T BREAK!, wreaked its havoc in LA and is now coming to NYC to put the mettle of comedians to the ultimate test. The very best of the NYC scene will see how far they can go without laughing even one iota.

Pick of the Day: Normal Gossip LIVE (in NYC) 6/14 & 6/16

June 8, 2023
News
live podcast, nyc comedy, town hall

While Scandoval has the world of reality TV wrapped around its fingers, the gossip of normal folks as captured by Kelsey McKinney and Alex Sujong Laughlin on their hit podcast Normal Gossip is something, we think, much more enthralling, hilarious, and even more beautiful than whatever reality show TV producers concoct in an editing bay. It’s a great reminder that drama and intrigue are not exclusive to famous, rich, beautiful, and/or high powered people.

McKinney and Laughlin have got such a charming show on their hands dissecting the gossip of the sorts of the people that you might pass on the street (or scroll past if you still don’t leave the house that much these days) that they’re going on tour for live tapings of Normal Gossip!

This is an instance where you should definitely leave your house, especially if you’re in NYC, to attend one or both tapings of Normal Gossip @ Town Hall in NYC come Wed. Jun. 14th and Fri. Jun. 16th at 7:30PM with special guest, celebrated writers Sabrina Imbler &  Tuck Woodstock. Tickets start at $52 and know that Wed. night is almost entirely sold out. SO GO GET TICKETS HERE NOW.

If our memory serves us correctly, it has been far too long since the astounding Justin Sayre has put on their Night of 1000 Judys in person (the last one we can remember was done virtually). It’s both a glorious tribute to one of America’s brightest shining stars in the iconic Judy Garland and a wondrous exhibition of Justin’s brilliant comedic and musical verve.

Also, it’s a benefit, once again, for the crucial NYC org, The Ali Forney Center that serves at-risk LGBTQIA+ youth with specialized housing and services.

Pick of the Day: Feminist Buzzkills Live (in NYC) 6/7

June 2, 2023
News
feminist buzzkills, jeff hiller, live podcast, lizz winstead, marie khan, Moji Alawode-El, nyc comedy

Every week since Roe vs. Wade got overturned by our current conservative activist SCOTUS, it seems like some red state passes another bill that takes us back 50 years or more with abortion access. That said, the fight is far from over and no one will have to go it alone thanks to folks like The Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead and her amazing org, Abortion Access Front.

Winstead additionally co-hosts a weekly podcast, Feminist Buzzkills, with Moji Alawode-El and Marie Khan that is equal parts catharsis from the present time and rip-roaring satirical takedown of the reality that religious zealots are dictating agency over women’s bodies. And, wouldn’t you know it… they’re actually doing a live taping of Feminist Buzzkills next week in NYC at Drom on Wed. Jun. 7th at 7:30PM that would make for a great opportunity to actually see that you’re not alone in the battle for reproductive rights (and enjoy a nice night out amidst our current dystopia). They’ll even have special guests such as Jeff Hiller from Somebody, Somewhere, TikTok star V. Spehar, and NYC for Abortion Rights‘ Saffie & Henny.

Tickets are going for $25 (w/$20 table min.) and you can (and very much should) get them here.

Pick of the Day: Feeld presents One Night Stand-Up (in NYC & LA) 6/13 & 6/27

May 30, 2023
News
anti roast, dating app, feeld, kink, los angeles comedy, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

Kink dating app of the moment, Feeld, is getting a little, dare we say, kinky as they’re putting on special one night only comedy shows in both LA and NYC. Not only have they tapped many of the best sex-positive comedians from either scene, but there will be a chance, if you’re up for it, to have your Feeld profile “anti-roasted” during the show.

Also, you’ll have a chance to meet plenty of Feeld folks in person at the low stakes environment of a comedy night (but maybe take things elsewhere if you find that special someone that’s exactly what you’re into).

Feeld presents One Night Stand Up is set for NYC at The Bell House in Brooklyn on Jun. 13th starting at 7PM with the comedy stylings of your host Ashley Ray as well as Dylan Adler, Marie Faustin, Spike Einbinder, and Clare O’Kane. Tickets are FREE!

The LA night is going to be at the spacious Echoplex in Echo Park on Jun. 27th 7PM with the likes of Ashley Ray taking on hosting duties again and Alison Stevenson, Brian Bahe, Hannah Pilkes, and Girl God. Once more, the tickets are the nice price of FREE!
