Netflix Orders 2 Seasons of Judd Apatow Series “Love” Starring Gillian Jacobs and Paul Rust

September 16, 2014

(via Deadline)

Not only has Netflix set up the return of Judd Apatow at the head of his own TV show (remember Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared?) with a nice top billing of Gillian Jacobs and Paul Rust, but they’re not wasting any more time in development by ordering Love straight to series and doubling down with two seasons.

Currently, there are few details about Love other than it will explore the sort of fragile, counterintuitive relationships that Apatow loves delving into.

So, with that, Netflix must know something great that we all don’t know with two seasons ordered.

Despite Netflix being shut out of being recognized as a winner in any Emmy category this year, the online streaming giant is pushing forward with their own agenda.

Their first order of business today: give Bojack Horseman a second season.

Netflix’s first original animated comedy series hasn’t even gone a week since its release before getting the order from another season, but we’re happy either way to hear more of Will Arnett voicing a sitcom horse as well as having a stellar cast including Aaron Paul, Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, and Paul F. Tompkins.

Netflix Paying Time Warner Cable For Faster Speeds and Direct Access So You Can Continue Binge Watch Uninterrupted

With possibly not knowing where the debate of net neutrality will head, Netflix is trying to guarantee the speed of their online streaming service by footing the bill themselves.

They’ve just signed a deal this week with Time Warner Cable that will guarantee fast speeds and direct access so that you can stream as many of your favorite comedy series and movies as you possibly can at no extra charge (for now).

Hopefully, net neutrality will be protected and this is just a pre-emptive measure.

That’s right the first season of Bojack Horseman is now on Netflix. So, if you’re taking a break from The Simpsons marathon, then just watch Bojack Horseman right here.

For the third season of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, the comedian behind Sleepwalk With Me and My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, Mike Birbiglia is coming for a recurring role. It’s not clear what he’ll be, but it wouldn’t be hard to imagine for it to not be a potentially scene-stealing role.

Our guess would be some of new, atypical prison chaplain.

Eddie Pepitone: In Ruins, directed by Steve Feinartz and shot live at The Bell House in Brooklyn, should definitely be what you’re watching today rather than whatever is opening at your local multiplex or other things on your Netflix queue.

Please watch over and over here.

In addition to the upcoming comedy special from Eddie Pepitone, Netflix is really going deep with comedy specials as they have lined up hour long comedy specials from some of the biggest names in comedy right now including Bill Cosby, Bill Burr, Chelsea Peretti, and Jim Jefferies.

This month, we’ll be able to see Jeffries’ “Jim Jefferies: BARE” and Pepitone’s “Eddie Pepitone: In Ruins”, then, in Nov., Peretti’s “One of the Greats” and Cosby’s “Bill Cosby 77” will be released. Finally, in Dec., Bill Burr’s latest “I’m Sorry You Feel That Way” will cap off one hell of a run in stand-up specials by Netflix.

So, Netflix Surpassed HBO This Past Quarter in Subscriber Revenue

The online streaming giant Netflix has been making a lot of waves over the last couple of years with their entrance into producing their own content. In fact, after resurrecting Arrested Development, Orange Is The New Black, and more, Netflix has just, in this past quarter, surpassed HBO in subscriber revenue.

While that doesn’t exactly mean that Netflix has grown bigger than HBO, which has more of an established brand, more original content, and, overall, more accolades and money coming in, it certainly does mean that Netflix (and online streaming in general) is absolutely headed in that direction.

Maybe, a stand alone HBO GO will be up for subscription in the not so distant future and we can all watch Silicon Valley, Veep, and Girls without using our friends and loved ones’ passwords.

Will Arnett Confirms That There Will Be a Season 5 of Arrested Development

In addition to the tomfoolery he had with TI and Jimmy Fallon, Will Arnett also further assured us that there will be a 5th season of Arrested Development on The Tonight Show last night after having revealed some details on The Today Show earlier.

Netflix’s Ted Sarandos was “positive” of a return, but Arnett made doubly sure to tell us all that it will be definitely happening.

However, there’s no telling what the timetable is for shooting or a release, especially considering everyone’s schedules.

Netflix’s latest series does feature Will Arnett as a former sitcom star horse Bojack Horseman with a bit of GOB-esque qualities. There’s a brand new trailer and you can see that humans and horses aren’t that different when it comes to trying to live down your own shadow from former 90’s sitcom stardom.

Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, and Aaron Paul also co-star and it’s going to be released on Aug. 22nd. Watch the trailer here and become cognizant that the 90’s was over 20 years ago.

Netflix Has Just Passed 50 Million Subscribers From a Lot of Your Binge Watching

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

Whether it be watching something like Arrested Development, Netflix stand-up specials, Orange Is The New Black, etc. the subscribers of Netflix have grown in number all the way past 50 million. That’s 1.69 million subscribers added worldwide from the second quarter of this year alone.

In contrast, Nielsen reported recently that there are currently an estimated 115.6 TV households in the U.S., which comes out to a 1.2% rise from the last TV season.

While it seems unfair to compare worldwide Netflix subscribers to U.S. TV households, these numbers also don’t account for Hulu Plus subscribers, people watching HBO GO even with an HBO subscription, Amazon Instant, and more (i.e. the aggregate viewership of online streaming networks).

So, we wouldn’t be surprised to see, a few years down the road if Netflix commanded the viewership and produced the amount of content that a network does year round, which would be probably pretty great for comedy series/specials/movies/talk shows.

Netflix’s latest comedy series slated for production is Grace & Frankie starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin featuring the two as arch rivals that become friends over the fact that their husbands want to marry each other. If that wasn’t intriguing enough, Sam Waterston is playing one of the husbands.

If that somehow not enough to draw your interest, perhaps the you’ll pay attention to June Diane Raphael and Baron Vaughn being cast as respective daughter and son on either side of this new family dynamic.

It’s announcements like these that make us glad Netflix releases all the episodes at once, so we can indeed binge watch.

Luckily, he’s got an hour stand-up special, “Eddie Pepitone- In Ruins” coming out on Aug. 7th and you better get ready for it. If The Bitter Buddha was any indication on how brilliant and captivating a comedian Eddie is, then In Ruins should be a damn good special.

There Might Be a New Video Service From a Former Hulu CEO, Jason Kilar

Vessel is the name of a start up company focused on video that’s being fronted by Jason Kilar who used to be a CEO at Hulu. The details aren’t clear as to what or how extensive the service will be, but with the founders’ mission being “to delight consumers and content creators alike”, their must be something here along the lines of what Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon are doing right now.

This might mean more opportunity for great original comedy series without the hassle of dealing with TV.

Armando Iannucci, Mike Schur, Jenji Kohan, Mike Judge, Jenni Konner, Chuck Lorre, and Marc Maron Have a Fascinating Chat

The Hollywood Reporter gathered together comedy showrunners Mike Schur from Parks and Recreation, Jenji Kohan from Orange Is The New Black, Mike Judge from SIlicon Valley, Armando Iannucci from Veep, Jenni Konner from Girls, Chuck Lorre from Two and Half Men (and so many more), and Marc Maron from Maron to chat for awhile about being a showrunner for a comedy series in 2014.

The results are pretty intriguing and enlightening. At one point, due to the modifier asking the entire group a number questions that they qualified with an exemption of Lorre’s shows, Chuck Lorre asked, “What am I doing here?”

It’s an animated series that follows the life of a former sitcom star that is also a horse. Will Arnett voices Bojack Horseman joined by the voices of Amy Sedaris, Aaron Paul, and Alison Brie.

We’re definitely getting a sort of GOB Bluth as a horse vibe here, which we’re completely on board for. Watch the trailer and mark Aug. 22nd on your calendar, the date when it comes out on Netflix.
