“Orange Is The New Black” Gets 3 More Seasons at Netflix

February 5, 2016
Uncategorized

(via E! Online)

Following their recent wins this awards season, Orange Is The New Black is going to stick around as a perennial awards season favorite.

Months before season 4 of Orange Is The New Black starts streaming on Netflix, seasons 5-7 have just been ordered, which is pretty much unprecedented for TV series these days. In fact, it’s often news if a TV series makes it to the end of a TV season without incident (i.e. getting cancelled, having showrunners switched out, etc.).

While the issue of what Netflix’s metrics are for ratings are still up for debate amongst the viewing public (mainly competing linear TV networks), a 3 season pick up should be a pretty good indication that a show is doing well.

“Morris From America” and “Tallulah” Already Bought Up at Sundance

(via Deadline/Variety)

Coming of age and dramedies are still going strong at Sundance.

Two of the first buys for comedy come from A24 and Netflix of Morris From America and Tallulah, respectively.

Morris From America, directed by Chad Hartigan, follows Markees Christmas (yes, the one from Channel 101′s Markees Saves) and Craig Robinson being transplanted to Germany and having to deal with adolescence overseas.

Tallulah from Sian Heder, which Netflix acquired the rights to before Sundance began, follows Ellen Page taking a baby from a bad mother.

While this sounds like in the ball park of last year’s Sundance fare, we hope that their fates in the box office, when released, are much different (i.e. better).

So, as far as comedy specials/mini-series go, Netflix will have had Tom Segura, Hannibal Buress, Patton Oswalt, Chelsea Handler, and the UK’s Jimmy Carr in just the first few months of 2016.

Jimmy Carr: Funny Business is set to stream starting Mar. 18th and Patton Oswalt: Talking for Clapping will stream starting on Apr. 22nd all on Netflix.

This output on top of the already announced Hannibal Buress special Comedy Camisado that’s due next month and Chelsea Handler’s Chelsea Does It mini-series that’s coming this Friday makes for an output of comedy specials that almost rival anyone who puts out hour long comedy specials.

This might be further proof of how little Netflix cares for the traditional TV ratings system.
