TCB Debriefing 12/13/23: Kenny DeForest, Netflix Is a Joke Fest, Trevor Noah/Anthony Anderson/Greta Gerwig, Lena Dunham

December 14, 2023
News
anthony anderson, cannes, emmys, grammys, greta gerwig, kenny deforest, lena dunham, netflix is a joke fest, trevor noah

1. Truly, deeply rest in peace, Kenny DeForest. A wondrous human being and great comedian taken from us all far too early (as you can see in the outpour of tribute and grief in his name). For now, what might be best would be donate to his Memorial Fund that was formerly a Recovery Fund and also watch his latest special, Don’t You Know Who I Am?, which came out just a few months ago (again, Kenny was on the path doing many a great thing in comedy).

2. Netflix Is a Joke Fest makes its first announcement of many about the hundreds of big time comedians and dozens of venues that will be happening in and around LA come May 2024. Go peep the schedule and get tickets here.

3. Trevor Noah is back at the Grammys, Anthony Anderson is stepping up to the hosting plate for The Emmys, and Greta Gerwig, riding high off of Barbie, will be the Cannes Film Festival Jury President all next year. Come to think of it, we would be thoroughly intrigued at the prospect of Greta Gerwig hosting an awards show, especially since she also can do this.

4. Lena Dunham has an ex-pat rom com going at Netflix that’s set to star Meg Stalter (Hacks) and Will Sharpe (White Lotus S2) (Variety). Having Meg Stalter as the star of series/movies is definitely where the future of comedy should be headed.

5. We’ll leave you with this: Shout out to every comedy album and special that’s coming out right now and won’t be able to be considered for “2023 Best Of” lists.

Here’s a Red Band Trailer for Lena Dunham’s Latest “Sharp Stick”

June 24, 2022
News
lena dunham, red band trailer, sharp stick

It has been 5 years since HBO bid farewell to Lena Dunham’s Girls and that same amount of time since there has been something to hit the big or small screen from Dunham. In many ways, she was a crucial part in the arrival of this wave of dramedy that we’re all still very much riding and bringing a new level of gravitas to explicitly sexual material in a comedy series.

Sharp Stick, a brand new original movie from Dunham, is both a return for Lena to being at the helm and a big screen. With a grounded, yet organically funny take on sex and relationships in mind, Lena might have made her most daring work to date following the other woman taking part in an extramarital affair.

Take a gander for yourself at what’s to come with Sharp Stick’s red band trailer here.

Then, look for Sharp Stick in NY & LA on Jul. 29th and across the country on Aug. 5th.

In our lifetimes, few loves put on public display seem quite as picturesque, passionate, and downright fun as the one between Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally. That’s part of why they wrote a book about it humbly called The Greatest Love Story Ever Told.

So, join in and catch them live in conversation about the book with Lena Dunham at the Aratani Theatre in Little Tokyo in DTLA on Wed., Oct. 3rd at 7:30PM. Individual tickets to include a copy of The Greatest Love Story Ever Told at $35 and you can (and should) get them here.

HBO Orders New Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner Series “Camping” Adapted from Julia Davis’ UK Series of Same Name

Looks like HBO has gone long enough without a new episode of something from Dunham and Konner (the pair brought you six seasons of Girls).

Jennifer Garner is set for top billing in this series that will center on a camping trip between family and friends gone awry.

Here’s a promo of the original Camping from the UK (try and imagine the Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner version of it)

Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner Are in Talks to Write That English Language Remake of “Toni Erdmann”

The key creative forces behind Girls, Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, might be teaming up once again to write an English language version of the hit R-rated European comedy about how important family is, Toni Erdmann. If things are lining up the way that murmurs about this project say they are, Jack Nicholson and Kristen Wiig might be involved.

We happened to love the original a whole lot by the way.

If this ends up being a way to both make a reliable remake for U.S. audiences and encourage another round of viewing of the aforementioned original, we’re more on board for this than we originally were.

Sure, the voices of Jason Schwartzman, Lena Dunham, Reggie Watts, Maya Rudolph, Susan Sarandon, Alex Karpovsky and John Cameron Mitchell might entice you to watch any animated comedy that has them as the cast.

However, Dash Shaw’s unique animation (he’s a graphic novelist by the way) for My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea as well as the title should peak your interest more.

Seeing that in the trailer certainly got us on board (even though there is sinking involved)

My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea will hit theaters on April 14th.

Both Girls and Lena Dunham have come a very long way in socio-political significance. Its stamp on pop culture, whether you love or hate the show (or watch a myriad of other TV series in this 21st Century Golden Age of Television), is pretty undeniable.

The sixth and final season of Girls is about to kick off in a year where visibility for women in media will be as important as it has ever been.

The trailer just dropped and seems to offer the set up for what will be some satisfying closure to the show and its characters. Maybe, that will make for an unforgettable send off of Girls?

We’ll see if that happens when the final season premieres on February 12th at Sunday, 10PM on HBO.

Sunday, February 12th at 10PM will be the start to the final leg of Hannah Horvath’s journey in her long-running HBO series Girls. It will probably be an even more interesting flashpoint of conversation than it normally is with series creator Lena Dunham being one of the most ardent supporters of Hillary Clinton.

Until then, here’s a teaser for the sixth and final season of Girls.

Amy Schumer and her team at Inside Amy Schumer takes on the issue of plus sizes versus “normal” sizes when it comes to women’s clothing by showing the vast disparity between the two.

How big is that disparity between shopping for a size 12 versus a size 6? Just look at it here.

Refinery 29 is expanding beyond being an online cultural destination for women by getting into making their own online content. Amidst developing short films, channels, etc., Refinery 29 has also launched an online comedy channel on YouTube called Riot. It’ll give a platform to many of the best female voices in comedy.

Already, they have some great content from Aparna Nancherla, Jo Firestone, Jacqueline Novak, Phoebe Robinson, and Shannon Coffey.

Specifically, absurdist puberty tips from Aparna and Jo and an intimate conversation about depression and anxiety between Jacqueline Novak and Lena Dunham are two you definitely want to watch.

So, keep an eye on Riot or subscribe to make that way easier.

Keegan-Michael Key and Lena Dunham Added to Sundance Juries

In a film world that still mostly celebrates weighty dramas, Sundance still gives some much needed love to comedy.

The revered Sundance Film Festival is one of the few places in critically acclaimed cinema where comedy gets its fair shake. If you take a look at film festivals and awards show the world over, mostly dramas dominate the line-ups and the fields of nominees.

However, indie comedies seem to really find their way en masse to Sundance and having Keegan Michael-Key and Lena Dunham added to the jury is even more of a reflection of comedy’s presence at the festival.

This makes the jury prizes for this year all the more intriguing.

HBO and Lena Dunham Agree to End “Girls” After Season 6

(via Deadline)

It’s interesting to see that 9-10 seasons was sort of a goal for sitcoms in the 90s and, in this millennium, 6 seasons is the now the benchmark for a landmark series.

Lena Dunham has got so many other things going that we’re not even aware of the full scope of what she’s working on. On top of Girls, she’s got a career as an author, movies, Lenny Letter, cameos on other shows like Scandal,

So, knowing that and knowing the journey that Hannah Horvath and company have gone through over the last few years makes it seem just about right that Dunham and HBO are coming in for a final landing on the series.

Don’t start getting remiss and teary eyed quite yet as season five hasn’t even premiered yet.

Hannah Horvath and her squad are back at it again with all the torment of still realistically trying to grow up and trying to stay friends while doing so.

That’s right, Girls is back for its fifth season and it doesn’t look like it’s going to hold anything back, just like it’s been doing for the last four seasons.

HBO Orders Lena Dunham Second Wave Feminism Pilot “Max”

As Lena Dunham has hinted at Girls possibly coming to a close in the not so distant future, HBO has made the smart move in keeping her around.

If Girls ends, the feminist comedy streak at HBO might keep going with Dunham’s latest project which delves into second wave feminism in 1963. Explored through the lens of a magazine writer played by Lisa Joyce, Max intrigues us as a 60s period piece as well as a progression of Dunham as a sort of a TV auteur.

According to the website, it’s “Feminism, style, health, politics, friendship and everything else from Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner.”

Expanding her reach beyond her work in film and TV, Lena Dunham has partnered up again with her Girls showrunner Jenni Konner for a weekly newsletter. We guess that Lena got a taste of publishing with her book Not That Kind of Girl and writing now and again for The New Yorker and wanted to have something on a more consistent basis.

When Lenny Letter launches, there will now be a triumvirate of celebrity-feminist-icon-backed sites with HelloGiggles and Rookie.

It’s coming this fall and you can sign-up here.

Women in comedy are definitely having a moment right now unlike they’ve had in decades past.

Not only are Tina Fey and Amy Poehler comedy power brokers, but there are more female producers, writers, and directors making female led comedy series and movies.

That being said, there is still a lot of stereotypes and prejudice that needs to be fought against. So, The Hollywood Reporter had a frank roundtable discussion with Amy Schumer, Ellie Kemper, Tracee Ellis Ross, Gina Rodriguez, Lena Dunham, and Kate McKinnon about carving out their niche in comedy.

You might just be surprised the sort of nonsense regarding women on screen that still exists in 2015 as well be proud of what the folks in this discussion have accomplished when you watch this…

“The Simpsons” Will Have All The Girls From “Girls” Guest Star

(via EW)

It’s not going to be a crossover episode, but we’d surprise if there weren’t any nods or references to HBO’s Girls in the upcoming episode.

Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet, and Jemima Kirke will all stay together like they do on Girls in an episode of The Simpsons where they all are guest starring.

The separation between their Girls characters and these characters only seems to be that Dunham’s character will be a pharmacist and they’re in Springfield and not Brooklyn.

After this, anyone think that there will be an episode of Girls where, at the very least, this episode of The Simpsons will be playing in the background?

Late Night with Seth Meyers has some fun with Lena Dunham the same way they did with The Newsroom last year.

Dunham takes on her Girls’ role as Hannah Horvath and sees if the writers’ room at Late Night is a good fit for her. Notice how she wouldn’t be OK with it being the other way around and seeing if she is a good fit with everyone else.

This week of The Late Late Show’s interim period between Craig Ferguson and James Corden is definitely one worth checking out.

The one and only Jim Gaffigan is filling in as host for most of this week. That fact alone should make you clear out 12:35AM to watch.

On top of that, Michael Ian Black, Sarah Silverman, Kumail Nanjiani, Dave Koechner, Justin Willman, Lena Dunham, Maria Bamford, Garry Shandling, and more are all going to be guests that sit down with Gaffigan.

So, make a reminder for 12:35AM at CBS and let’s see if Jim has The Gaffigan Five worked into the show at all.

Earlier this year, we told you about how Lena Dunham will be the latest part of the experimental new chapters of the Archie Comics as she is writing a few issues.

While chatting with Jimmy Kimmel last night, she delved a little into what might come of her version of the Archie Comics and what she fears in the world of Archie fandom.

Kimmel also makes a good call on who would play a good Jughead in a live action version of Archie.

There aren’t much details as to Jonze’s character, but we’d only hope and cross our fingers that there’s some sort of joke/reference about Her in there.
