Not only was Clayton English determined the winner of season 9 of Last Comic Standing last night, joining the ranks of Rodman, Felipe Esparza, Iliza Shlesinger, Josh Blue, and more, but he also got to perform a stand-up set as a sort of victory lap, free of judges, on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Congratulations go to Clayton and you should watch his set from last night here.

If you’ve been following Last Comic Standing, you’re probably acquainted yourself with the undeniable charm, equal parts clever and silly, of one Andy Erikson that has gotten her to the final 5 contestants.

That would probably more than encourage you to buy her new album Secret Unicorn just released from Rooftop Comedy.

If you aren’t, then give her album a listen to see what we and LCS are talking about.

It’s a two hour premiere event on NBC at 9PM.

Anthony Jeselnik is a host, Norm MacDonald is a judge, and Last Comic Standing, despite labor disputes, is actually happening.

Tune in tonight to see how everything in the competition goes down as well as get to see some really funny comics whose names you should commit to memory on TV.

Here’s The Trailer For Season 9 of “Last Comic Standing” That Now Really Does Include Norm MacDonald and Anthony Jeselnik

If you’re wondering what Anthony Jeselnik as the host and Norm MacDonald as a judge on Last Comic Standing, wonder no more.

As you can see from this trailer, they really are there.

We’re thoroughly intrigued to see what peanuts of wisdom Norm hands out as well as Jeselnik will adjust to hosting a stand-up competition. Hopefully, they’ll unapologetically be themselves (or their on stage personas).

You can also catches glimpses of some great comedy folks including Nate Craig, Andy Erikson, Tony Baker, Ms. Pat, Lizzy Cooperman, Moses Storm, Junior Stopka, Nick Youssef, Ali Wong, Chris Fairbanks, and way more.

We’ll find out when the ninth season of Last Comic Standing premieres on Wed. July 22nd at 9pm on NBC.

Anthony Jeselnik Will Host and Norm MacDonald Will Be a Judge on The Next Season of “Last Comic Standing”

(via The Wrap)

Anthony Jeselnik will be taking the place of J.B. Smoove and Norm MacDonald will do the same for Russell Peters and we can only hope and pray that makes for some fun quick burns and moments that won’t be unlike when Andy Kindler was a judge on Last Comic Standing all those years ago.

This is a very intriguing move and could possibly be a much needed jolt to the franchise. The back-and-forth between the remaining judges Roseanne Barr and Keenen Ivory Wayans and Norm and Jeselnik could potentially be a show by itself.

We’ll have to wait this Summer on NBC.

More so than Jan. 1st, Jan. 5th better marked the new year as everyone seemed to get back to work. That includes late night talk shows and stand-up comedians doing sets on said late night talk shows.

So, with that said, we’re off to the races for late night sets with Lachlan Patterson, who you saw on Last Comic Standing last year, on The Late Late Show with (for the week) Drew Carey.

What Has Happened to Comedy on Broadcast Networks? (Hint: Lots of Canceling)

It would be a little premature to say that there’s writing on the wall, but comedy definitely seems like it is playing second fiddle (or almost no fiddle at all) to hour long dramas at NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox. Comedy is currently flourishing on cable and online and, perhaps, that is where episodic comedy, wholly, is headed.

This TV season alone, freshman comedies Selfie, A to Z, Manhattan Love Story, and Bad Judge have been canceled along with relative new comers The Millers.

Community, Arrested Development, and now The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which had a series order from NBC but didn’t even make it to air, have moved from TV networks to online streaming services.

Just yesterday, it was announced ABC also scrapped a sitcom they had already ordered to series, Members Only starring John Stamos.

Bloggers and John Mulaney alike keep talking about whether Mulaney will last on Fox. On top of all of that, there are rumors that NBC has halted production on Last Comic Standing after it already had brought it back from the dead.

We’re not saying broadcast networks have drawn a hard line on in the sand (yet) prohibiting comedy from their airwaves. Cristela, black-ish, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine have found success just starting out and the networks have a few comedy mainstays like Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, and Two and Half Men. New Girl and The Mindy Project have also seemed to fared well in their tenure at Fox. Also, cable networks TBS and TNT have recently canceled Sullivan & Son and Franklin & Bash, respectively.

Still, this last couple of years have seen an unprecedented shift of the comedy genre as an aggregate on TV from going live on air to every household with a TV on a weeknight to niche cable networks and various online entities ranging anywhere from Netflix to YouTube to Amazon. Key & Peele, Louie, Portlandia, Veep, Transparent, and Children’s Hospital are all just a few perfect examples of this new paradigm.

The future for comedy on TV and the behemoths of television does have yet to be decided. The highly anticipated Last Man on Earth from Chris Miller and Phil Lord starring Will Forte is premiering next year. Networks, like CBS, are starting to get on board with their own streaming service.

What is clear in the current TV landscape, above all, is that the Internet isn’t going away and, because of that, viewers can watch whatever they want whenever they want to watch it. Thus, people will watch their favorite Key & Peele sketch as many as times as they can stand, binge watch The Simpsons via The Simpsons World app/site, consume as much media that exists online of their favorite comedians (i.e. web series, podcasts, stand-up clips, etc.), and do so at any time of any day in any place versus Thursdays at 8 at home,

In such an environment, it’s much harder than it used to be to launch a broad franchise sitcom that lasts 10 seasons and lives on in syndication, which has been the network TV model for comedy for decades. So, for now, as NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt poignantly remarked during Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s move to Netflix, “…we have a very drama-heavy midseason schedule.”

NBC Renews Last Comic Standing for 9th Season

Ben Kronberg Is Gaming The System on Last Comic Standing with #GoFuckYourselfBen

Last Comic Standing contestant/very funny comedian Ben Kronberg drew the ire of judge Roseanne Barr, last week, for doing his atypical routine, which involves a lot of pauses, even at the top of his set. Barr didn’t appreciate what she thought was wasting time and Kronberg engaged in a bit of back-and-forth with Barr until she told Ben, “Go fuck yourself!”

As a result, Kronberg made some lemonade and turned that incident into a very popular hashtag #GoFuckYourselfBen on Twitter, which has really worked in his favor.

‘Last Comic Standing’ Editors’ Strike Ends with Union Deal

The editors of Last Comic Standing at NBC got to unionize under IATSE and the show will move forward, as far as we can tell, and still premiere on May 22nd.

WIth this deal, the strike only lasted two days, which will hopefully become more the case in future entertainment strikes.

NBC’s ‘Last Comic Standing’ Hit With Editors Strike

The editors of this current season of Last Comic Standing are on strike for a union contract that would include health insurance and pension benefits. There is no word on whether this will halt the premiere of the latest season.

We’re guessing that NBC would like to keep that hush hush for as long as possible. Let’s hope that matter gets resolved agreeably and many comedians who deserve the exposure get on national TV.

NBC Reviving ‘Last Comic Standing’ Again

NBC just doesn’t quite want to let go of the stand up comedy competition Last Comic Standing. The reason as to why, we’re not sure. Perhaps, they have some sort of graph that says that stand up has gotten significantly more popular in a target demographic over the last couple of years that Last Comic Standing went off the air or something.

Either way, we are excited to see it come back as the last season put James Adomian, Kurt Metzger, Myq Kaplan, Laurie Kilmartin, Tommy Johnagin, and more on national television.

Can’t Even Dream This Up: Day 3 of Bridgetown

April 24, 2011

bridgetown comedy festival, comedy death ray, doug stanhope, jay larson, kristen schaal, last comic standing, los angeles, nick thune, pete holmes, portland, tell your friends

The prize festival packages so often offered on the radio or in promotions that promise an all expense paid, behind-the-scenes, once-in-a-lifetime, in-the-thick-of-it experience usually never live up to any such description.  How good can a week hanging out with Black Eyed Peas honestly be, especially if you can even partially think for yourself?

Though, I, Comedy Bureau Director Jake Kroeger, didn’t win a prize of any sorts, Day 3 at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival certainly surpassed any expectation that winning back stage tickets off the radio could ever promise.

First off, I stumbled into comedians Pete Holmes, Nick Thune, and Jay Larson and had one of the most entertaining breakfasts I can ever remember.  Normally, eating with comedians can be trying as I’ve had the fact that I ordered breakfast at 3AM riffed on like it was some bad improv sketch that will never end.  Yet, sitting and eating at one of Portland’s one of finest dining establishments, Mother’s Bistro, I laughed so hard at Holmes trying to do crowd work while we were waiting to order, Thune trying to figure out loopholes and inconsistencies in the menu pricing, and Larson cleverly commenting the whole time.  It was top notch back and forth banter between all three of them, especially when everyone at the table including Holmes himself was critiquing his riffing and crowd work throughout the meal.

Even more intriguing than hearing Holmes, who is about to record his CD next month, Thune, whose album Thick Noon was widely praised, and Larson who just recorded his album a few weeks ago at the Hollywood Improv, shoot the shit was hearing about their very first shows.  Some people might think of this as the alt-comedy version of Talking Funny, which is really just a “big name” version of Paul Provenza’s Green Room on Showtime, but it was really remarkable to hear about Holmes just going up and doing a long set for his very first show, which was in private with family and friends, Thune talk about developing his delivery, and Larson talk about how he wrote a brand new 5 minutes every week, doing well right from the start, performing at a club in Boston, and getting up to 45 minutes of material before he realized he should probably start repeating some of it.

This was just breakfast. I hadn’t even gone to a show for the festival yet and the day is already at one of those “good night, then drop the mic” moments.

Later, I walked in late on Victor Varnado’s comedy concert film Tell Your Friends at the Bagdad Theatre that a trailer that surfaced briefly online hyping the movie as an alternative comedy documentary.  Though only getting to see a portion of the film, I found it immensely interesting that in between full performances between Reggie Watts and the duo of Kurt Braunholer and Kristen Schaal, there several interspersed talking head clips of Jim Gaffigan, Marc Maron, and several others in the comedy world, without regard to their status as an alternative or mainstream comic, try to discern what alternative comedy is and who qualifies or doesn’t qualify as an “alt comic”.

Ultimately, whether any of the interviewees were criticizing alt comedy for bordering too close to performance art or considered to be a part of the movement, everyone sort of agreed that the label “alternative” was pushed on them by the industry and was not self-styled, insisting that they’re just a bunch of people trying to be funny in their own different, unique way.  At one point, Reggie Watts commented that he thinks something he did on stage is really good when someone tells him, “That was so stupid.”  Though no real answer or explanation really came about for Tell Your Friend’s query, I’d definitely see it again.

Staying at the Bagdad Theatre, I caught “This Is Not Happening”, a monthly storytelling showcase back in LA featuring some of the country’s best comedians stripping off whatever stage persona they usually have and telling an honest story based on a theme, which, on this edition, was shame.  At this particular show, there were so many technical difficulties to deal with, it was truly surprising and endearing how the humanity of an audience showed itself.

Starting off, host Ari Shaffir took the stage in complete darkness.  No stage lights were on for a good 7 minutes, but that didn’t matter as about 20 people seated in the vast 500 seat Bagdad Theatre lit Shaffir with their flashlight apps on their smart phones.  Everyone wanted to see comedy that badly.  Once the lights finally lit up, cheers abounded and Shaffir moved onto a story about shame, but was, again, held back by background music continuing to play throughout his set.  Still, people laughed the whole way through because they pretty much invested their entire evening in laughing and weren’t going to be hindered by any sort of technical nightmare.

Even when comedian Mike Burns took the stage to the sound of an accidentally tripped fire alarm, no one left their seats and Burns riffed off of the incessant buzzing for a big portion of his set to wild applause.  Andy Dick went way over his time and struggled to stay focused on telling his story about shame, which people expected to be “juicy”, but Pete Holmes “brought the heat” just like he did at breakfast and destroyed like nothing that came before him had gone wrong with his hysterical story about visiting a massage parlor in Amsterdam.  Moshe Kasher also had a magnificent set with a story about becoming a man much in the way that “This Is Not Happening” had intended with being honest to the point of being metaphorically naked on stage, relating to the topic, and the tech, lights and sound all, working.  I’m still reveling in how much people were “on board” for whatever happened on the show and how much they wanted to laugh at people’s stories of shame.

A showcase of Last Comic Standing finalists/semi-finalists quickly followed This Is Not Happening at the Bagdad Theatre and showed that live comedy is much better than TV’s recreation of it.  Without any sort of language and extremely rigid time restriction, comedians James Adomian, Jesse Case, and NYC’s Claudia Cogan put any doubts of their comedic skills and talents that were repeatedly cut and repackaged for NBC.

Leaving Bagdad after about five hours worth of show, I walked to the Mt. Tabor Theatre Main Room interviewing James Adomian and the Whitest Kids U Know’s very own Trevor Moore on Bridgetown and Adomian’s rock star status in Portland.  Transcribed interview to follow soon.

Most people after nearing a full work day of being an audience member would take a break or just stop altogether in watching live shows of any sort, but the prospect of seeing Kurt Braunholer and Kristen Schaal’s Hot Tub kept me going.  As a variety show hailing from NYC, Braunholer and Schaal were hilarious from the top of the show with their “Win A Date with Kristen Schaal” game/sketch to when they took their bows along with a stellar line-up of LA based performers (perhaps there comedy wall between NYC and LA is slowing coming down) including Kyle Kinane, Nick Thune, Brett Gelman, Jon Daly, and my third run-in of Pete Holmes.  From Kinane’s stories of calling cabs to go to Wendy’s to Daly’s uproariously absurd character, Drunken English Roller-blading Tree to Gelman doing one of the most “meta” things I’ve ever seen in having an audience member read an “article” written about him in the NY times on stage, Hot Tub proved to be, at the loud resounding laughs of an over-capacity crowd, one of the best shows of Bridgetown.

At this point on this in the evening, I had seen Pete Holmes kill it three times and while walking with him down Hawthorne back to the Bagdad Theatre, I ended up watching him do it again for a fourth time as a drop-in on a show where one audience member had asked if Doug Stanhope was going to perform.  After this year’s Bridgetown is over, there should be no doubts about the comedy of Pete Holmes.  As one woman told me after seeing Holmes at Comedy Death Ray Live in LA, Pete does some beautiful stand up.

This concludes Day 3 at Bridgetown, which, in reflecting back on it is something that couldn’t be even dreamed up.  One more day left here before the LA comedy scene goes back home and I’m feeling legitimately like a kid, strangely enough, for the first time.  I hope Portland appreciates this fact and/or the festival in the same way.

Much of what we feature and write about here at the Comedy Bureau often takes place in a out of the way bars, coffee shops, garages, or even someone’s living room, in a few cases, as those are the places where we go to find our particular taste in comedy (also, most of the shows are free, which is a great incentive).  Yet, I understand that might be an intimidating notion for some people to go to a show where there is no stage, where the couch that you’re sitting on is perhaps where someone sleeps or where “the magic happens”.   Perhaps, you might think that it’s just a bunch of no-talent open mic’ers doing their own show on their “own turf”.  Rest assured that is not the case as plenty of comics on “those” line-ups are regularly on TV, paid to perform on the road, and are a part of an ultra-competitive comedy scene.

Thanks to both Jamie Flam, the new manager of the Hollywood Improv Lab, and Chris Hardwick, Jonah Ray, Matt Mira, and everyone else over at the Nerdist podcast for slowly, but surely revamping the back room of Meltdown Comics in Hollywood into the Nerdist Theatre, this really unique and specific problem has been now solved.

Over the past month and in the month to come, there has been a nice streak of shows popping up at both venues.  First off, brilliant comedians Eddie Pepitone and Glenn Wool did their own special shows at the Improv Lab and while the back room of Meltdown Comics has had the fantastic Meltdown with Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani (recently profiled on Last Call with Carson Daly) for awhile, the Nerdist Podcast has taken to sponsoring several comedy events from a special screening of Black Dynamite, a comedy art show, and a special night of Pop and Politics with comedian Jimmy Dore.

Not too long ago, the awareness of both rooms was largely peripheral as shows and events, especially the kind featured here at the Comedy Bureau, would take place sporadically.  Being at the Improv Lab and the back room of Meltdown was largely viewed by a number of people as sort of an abstract idea, almost as if it was weird to put on a show there.  Last year, I heard a show producer at the Improv say, “Wait, we’re not at the Lab, right?  If we are, we’re screwed.  No one’s going to come.”  At that time, approximately two years earlier, there would be, in a given week, only one or two shows at the Lab and maybe zero happening at Meltdown Comics.  In a city where a line-up at the South by Southwest Arts Festival is a typical Monday night, anyone from normal people who love to laugh and comedy fans didn’t think much of a show taking place at either venue.

Now, the legitimacy for the two institutions keeps growing as solid establishments for live comedy as many of their shows and line-ups are not unlike those of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre considered by many to be one of the most popular venues in LA.  Instead of the occasional stand up comedy showcase that used to rarely take place, the Improv Lab is now having variety shows, interview shows, sketch and improv shows, and one show where some of LA’s best do their first five minutes they’ve ever written. The Nerdist Theatre might even have a weekly open mic in the works hosted by their very own Matt Mira (details to come as the Comedy Bureau receives them) in the coming months.  According to the Comedy Bureau “standards and practices”, those are bona fide comedy theatre that need to be attended regularly, not only to keep their doors open, but also because where you can see, in this humble blog’s/site’s opinion, where live comedy is going.
