On top of that, Girls returns for its fourth season at HBO at 9PM and the series premiere of The Duplass Brothers’ Togetherness follows right after at 9:30PM. To cap off the evening, there’s also the season four premiere of Episodes on Showtime at 10:30PM.

This latest promo for the next round of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver promises more of the season one sort of Last Week Tonight.

That’s more than fine by us, even without special ponies.

Make sure to catch the season two premiere Feb. 8th at 11PM on HBO.

HBO Announces Premieres for “Veep”, “Silicon Valley”, and New Series “The Brink”

One of the sharpest comedy blocks on TV, Veep and Silicon Valley, is set to return Sun. Apr. 12th for their fourth and second season respectively along with something called Game of Thrones (via EW).

HBO just announced a whole row of premiere dates for 2015 for their returning shows as well as announcing that their latest series, the dark geopolitical comedy “The Brink” starring Jack Black and Tim Robbins is coming this Summer (via zap2it).

As The Brink centers on crisis due to a possible nuclear strike through the eyes of a Secretary of State, a veteran pilot, and a government official, this is probably the closest we’ll ever get to a Dr. Strangelove as a TV show, which is something we’re completely on board for.

Announced today, HBO’s next hour stand up special will be coming from Tig Notaro. Her amazing, lightning-in-a-bottle album Live, it would seem, might just be a preview of this special since she’ll be covering the passing of her mother and her bout with breast cancer.

It is set to tape later this year and we’re hoping that it’ll span the whole range of Tig’s comedic prowess from pushing a stool to the stories she shares at NPR and on The Moth.

The fourth season of Girls hasn’t even premiered yet and HBO is already going ahead with ordering a fifth season from Lena Dunham.

The premiere of this latest season is this Sun. Jan. 11th at 9PM. If HBO’s move was to make season four more enticing with a fifth one in the works, then their plan worked.

With 2015 looming, there is one big problem we, as the entire human race, have against us all.

That problem is… New Year’s Eve. Well, that is what John Oliver and the team at Last Week Tonight is here to tell you ultimately making you feel better that you stayed in rather than go to some random party where you paid a higher cover charge than you would for most of your favorite bands playing a festival.

Watch there two cents and then some on New Year’s Eve here.

When it comes to pushing the boundaries of comedy, The Duplass Brothers, Mark and Jay, have not only push boundaries, but do so in an unexpected, but delightful way.

From The Puffy Chair to Jeff Who Lives at Home to Cyrus to their latest project, an HBO series, Togetherness and so much more (both together and individually), Mark and Jay find the comedy in life in some of the most organic ways possible.

So, of course we’re going to watch a nice, long intimate conversation that they have with Paul F. Tompkins on his nice, long intimate conversation web series Speakeasy.

HBO and Netflix Wise Up By Dropping Live/Same Day Ratings and Notifying of Expiring Titles, Respectively

Every day, TV/movies and the Internet come closer and closer to becoming one. There are signs of this shift everywhere.

Most recently, HBO has announced that it will only use Nielsen’s Live Plus 7 measure which encompasses the rating for a TV show right when it airs all the way to 7 days after (via Variety). The amount of people that watch their favorite HBO shows like Veep and Silicon Valley on their DVR or on HBOGO grows everyday.

Online streaming giant Netflix is also stepping up its game, which, already, is changing the dynamic of how Hollywood works with the likes of Amazon, Hulu, etc.. Titles of TV series and films that aren’t original Netflix productions often have a finite time to be streamed on Netflix. Notifications of what and when those shows and movies would disappear were scarce, but with a “Last Call” section of a newsletter that Netflix sends out. they’ll be doing away with that problem altogether (via The AV Club). If, for some reason, The Office was to no longer be available to stream via Netflix, you’d know a month ahead of time.

Soon, there will likely be no separation between your favorite comedy web series and comedy TV series.

Sarah Silverman Starring in Upcoming HBO Comedy Pilot

(via Deadline)

With dramedy Togetherness already set to premiere next month, HBO is delving more into the mid-life crisis territory of comedy in their latest pilot order. Sarah Silverman will star as a “pathologically honest woman having a mid-life crisis”. The description sounds like a radical departure from The Sarah Silverman Program, but we’re definitely into seeing Silverman get more vulnerable and honest.

There is no title yet, but as Happyish and Togetherness are already dramedies on the premium cable networks, we’d hope the title is something that goes in a slightly different direction just to stand out.

HBO has a very intriguing addition to their comedy development slate with a comedy from Will & Grace’s Max Mutchnick based on a book by Laura Kightlinger.

So, it being at HBO and the book being about a single mom looking for a husband in the 70s from Kightlinger, it should make for a nice, ripe, dark comedy.

John Oliver and company on Last Week Tonight are having the holiday season off. However, they made sure to make another web exclusive video breaking down the ridiculous tradition of the Presidential Turkey Pardon just in time for Thanksgiving.

While breaking down a time honored tradition by the Executive Office of The United States, Oliver also mentions that they’ll be back in February, which will leave more than plenty for him and his team to catch up on.

The Baltimore Media Blog has reported a sighting of Hugh Laurie on the set of HBO’s Veep dressed very much in the mileu of Veep.

We can only hope that not only that Laurie has indeed returned to a pure, full on comedy after all those years of A Little Bit of Fry and Laurie as well as Blackadder, but that he would be on the show for a long arc, if he doesn’t get a spot as a cast regular. It would be one great thing that would have happened today in the world of comedy.

By now, you’ve probably seen posted elsewhere around the Internet, this amazing clip from the finale of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver where he uses a salmon cannon (it’s exactly what it sounds like) to launch salmon all across the television landscape. Just because we didn’t post at 12:01AM and get the most Facebook interactions out of it, doesn’t mean we’re not going to post this hilarious bit.

Such recipients of salmon to the face include Jon Stewart, Jimmy Fallon, JJ Abrams, Homer Simpson, Dwight Howard, Tom Hanks, and so much more.

If this doesn’t make sense to you yet, just watch and thoroughly enjoy, then have an overwhelming sense of sadness that there will be no new Last Week Tonight for the weeks to come.

“Last Week Tonight” Knows What Home Depot Should Be Advertising

Lowe’s is employing robots to help customers find their way through their hardware and home supplies store. It’s an added perk for sure when looking for the right type of bolts and screws, but the team at Last Week Tonight with John Oliver thinks that customer service at such places is much more dependent on the human element than simple knowledge of tools, gardening, etc.

So, with the help of Nick Offerman, H. Jon Benjamin, and Sarah Baker, Last Week Tonight made up this ad for Home Depot that shows that their sales representatives are best put to use when dealing with couples whose relationship is going off the rails.

Watch it here.

The comeback of “The Comeback” at HBO is less than two weeks away and many of you still might be wondering how the show was revived after being canceled several years later, just out of the blue.

In doing the rounds on the talk show circuit, Lisa Kudrow revealed on Kimmel that there was a whole younger generation that was into The Comeback that she had no idea was around until the last couple years.

Thus, Nov. 9th 10pm will see the return of The Comeback seemingly thanks to a lot of ardent fans.

Having taking on the awareness of Net Neutrality, drones, the lack of coverage of Supreme Court cases, and more, John Oliver’s target for this week is sugar or, more specifically, the amount of sugar that us consumers are unaware of in almost all of our food.

Of course, the Last Week Tonight team and Oliver do a bang up job of letting us all know what’s up, making us laugh, and encouraging action. Watch it all here.

HBO Is Officially Going to Have a Stand-Alone Online Streaming Service

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

Many a friend, family member, etc. has begged other friends and family members for their HBO GO password over the last couple of years as HBO currently doesn’t not offer HBO GO by itself. In order to watch as much Veep, Girls, Silicon Valley, and, very soon, The Comeback whenever one pleased, one had to have an HBO subscription.

Well, that’s all changing as, sometime in 2015, HBO has just announced that they will indeed have that stand alone service that will go toe-to-toe with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and more.

With a veritable stand alone HBO GO, we’re not sure how anyone is going to get anything done anymore other than the people that make those shows.
