Summer is officially in session, which means that the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is just around the corner. While it’s always enticing to take up an opportunity to watch as many of hundreds upon hundreds of shows, most of us don’t have the money to fly to Scotland, find a place to crash for a month, and THEN pay to see shows. At least performers have a shot to make some money maybe (though, more realistically, hoping to break even).

That’s why The Elysian Theater’s annual tradition of putting a whole day of their favorite LA comedy folks that are bound for the Edinburgh Fringe and presenting their shows back-to-back-to-back-to-back.

This particular Edinburgh Fringe Preview Day at The Elysian will run through 8 shows from 12:20PM to 11PM on Sat. Jul. 22nd. We’ve actually seen most of these shows already and tell you that it would be worth your night to catch any of them.

On the slate are:

Sophie Santos… Is Codependent
Joy’s Bed & Breakfast w/ Jessy Morner-Ritt and Izzy Gerasole
Two Cats on a Date by Griffin Kelly
Claire Woolner: A Retrospection
Going Up w/Sara Schaefer
Greta Titelman’s Exquisite Lies
BONHEUR by Cam Gavinski

It’s so much great show without having to get airfare or room and board and it will only cost you $12-$20 per show or $60 for a day pass to watch all 8 and make it a whole day at The Elysian. Get tickets/details/more here. Do it now!

Pick of the Day: Summer Girl Winter Boy: Greta Titelman and Matt Rogers (in LA) 8/5

You’re well aware that it’s actually quite the rarity to see a legitimate hour set from a comedian while in LA or NYC. Stage time is such a scarce resource for an ever growing number of comedians that you should take the chance, if you can find it, to go watch someone do an hour rather than one of their handful of ten minute sets they’re doing around town.

For all the attitude, style, spunk, and wit that both Greta Titelman (Search Party) and Matt Rogers (I Love That For You, Fire Island) bring to the stage, you should really never miss a set of theirs. Lucky for LA, they’re co-headlining back to back at the one and only Hollywood Improv next month.

Mark down Fri. Aug. 5th at 8PM PT for having an evening on Melrose and watching Greta and Matt take over the Improv’s Main Room. Tickets are $25 (plus 2 item min.) and don’t be surprised if it sells out soon. Go get ’em here ASAP.

Combining the best artists in animation with the best comedians, Picture This! has brought us so many unforgettable stories that are punctuated with the drawings of cats, genitalia, and actual illustrations of a story that was being told.

It has been 10 years since it became a regularly recurring show in LA thanks to Naked Comedy and host Brandie Posey and 6 years in Brooklyn out in NYC (also thanks to Naked Comedy). They’ll be celebrating both anniversaries with shows respectively at Union Hall on Sat. Apr. 30th at 7PM ET and Permanent Records Roadhouse on Sat. May 21st at 7:30PM PT.

Per usual, they’ve gathered the best of both worlds in animation and comedy with :

elysian, greta titelman, los angeles comedy, netflix is a joke fest, stand up comedy

We used to revel in seeing one Greta Titelman prowl and command the stage all across LA in 2019 and early 2020. You could often find us in the back of Genghis Cohen on Tuesdays (Greta’s weekly stand-up spot that she shared with the beloved Blair Socci) delighting in Titelman charming any sort of crowd into submission with her sharply drawn bits, stories, characters, etc.

Like so many of our favorite folks, we haven’t really got to them as they’re supposed to be seen (in an intimate, properly lit venue for an hour) for years, which has left our head often hanging like Charlie Brown while pacing indoors during quarantine.

2022 is thankfully a different story with all venues and shows and comedians getting up and running again and such splendid comedic talents as Greta getting to grace audiences with their exquisite comedy wares once more.

No more sullen pacing around for us, thank goodness.

Greta will actually be headlining the Elysian twice in the coming months with her untitled hour on Sun. 3/27 at 7:30PM PT and Sat. Apr. 30th at 9:30PM PT (specifically for Netflix Is a Joke Fest). Tickets are $16 and $20 respectively and you best go get them right now.

Pick of the Day: The Return of Blair & Greta Show (in LA)

blair socci, greta titelman, la comedy, stand up comedy

Often, on a Tuesday night, you could find us leaning at the back of the room filled with church pews at a somewhat peculiar, but beloved Chinese restaurant on Fairfax called Genghis Cohen. The reason for such a thing was the amazing weekly Tuesday stand-up show run by Blair Socci and Greta Titelman. Blair and Greta could do the whole show themselves with their own brands of wild, hilarious energy, but they’d always have a grand line-up of LA favorites and the best folks who were stopping through LA.

Fortunately, Genghis Cohen survived throughout lockdown and, as such, The Blair & Greta Show are returning as well, giving us back one of our favorite Tuesday night comedy haunts. They’re starting back up on Tues. Jul. 20th at 8PM PT and, like they used to do, are keeping admission free every Tuesday. Their line-up for the first show back is TBA, but you most definitely should follow @blairgretashow to keep yourself in the loop on who you’ll be so lucky to see.

Dubbed as “The Jokey Show”, Whitmer Thomas is indeed taking his monthly slot at The Satellite and having all the comics dress up as the fictional character from DC Comics, The Joker (which will even be more intriguing considering nearly all of the line-up is comprised of women). Apart from that, we’re guessing some of them will be doing a normal stand-up set, but, then again, maybe they’ll try doing stand-up as some iteration of The Joker, anywhere from Cesar Romero to Joaquin Phoenix.

In any case, we’re fully on board for this stunt and whatever it ends up being and definitely think you should be in attendance to see what happens. Also, the line-up is fantastic with-or-without a Joker costume. Get tickets here.

In case these times haven’t made a clear, the time for f*ckboys is over. Mary Beth Barone is bringing her show Drag His Ass: A F*ckboy Treatment Program across the country once more to further this sentiment via sharing damning stories, observations, and more on f*ckboys.

Barone has a great line-up taking f*ckboys to task, as you can see above, for this edition at Dynasty Typewriter this Thursday. It really ought to be a satisfying, hilarious evening that’s probably long overdue for those deserving f*ckboys

Well, NYC’s renowned Las Culturistas podcast, hosted by Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang,  is finally coming to LA to do a round of their beloved I Don’t Think So, Honey! next month.

For the uninitiated, 50 comedians (you can see above that they’ve assembled many of LA’s best) will get to fiercely rant for one minute on anything in culture kicked off by the eponymous phrase “I don’t think so honey”. Arguably, it raises sh*t-talking to an art form. Do yourself a favor and listen to the live episodes that they’ve done in the NYC in the Las Culturistas archives.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. We highly recommend to go get them here ASAP.

Hailing from NYC, the wondrous Patti Harrison and Catherine Cohen are bringing up a very stacked line-up to “give them lectures on guy stuff so that they can finally fit in.”

Sounds like the “perfect time” for such a thing (not to mention that the line-up is again, so damn stacked)

Tickets are $7 and you can and really should get them here.
