Pick of the Day: Crane’s Comedy 7 Year Anniversary (in LA) 3/15

March 10, 2023
News
aston wallace, bri pruett, candice thompson, derrick c brown, dtla, live comedy, los angeles comedy, madison shepard, sean grant, stand up comedy, trevor smith, trish hadley

Once just a hidden gem of a bar guarded by a bank vault door (we’re not kidding about that), Crane’s Bar in DTLA has become a fixture of great comedy in DTLA. They’ve carried a torch for 7 years making a neighborhood-y feeling basement a great spot to watch many of LA’s finest, both famous and on-the-rise, take the mic in a setting that’s pretty much as intimate as it can get.

By “they”, we do mean the splendid team that currently consists of Trish Hadley, Bri Pruett, Aston Wallace, and Trevor Smith. Come Wed. Mar. 15th at 8PM, they’re going to mark their 7 year anniversary with a damn fine line-up of Candice Thompson, Sean Grant, Derrick C. Brown, and Madison Shepard.

Don’t miss out on one of the only comedy shows in LA that makes it worth going downstairs from ground level and go get your tickets at $10 a pop right here right now.

Pick of the Day: Thank You Very Much: A Juneteenth Comedy Show (in LA) 6/18

June 10, 2022
News
candice thompson, chinedu unaka, chris spencer, dave helem, juneteenth, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy, zainab johnson

As Juneteenth, a major milestone in slavery coming to an end in the U.S., is now a federal holiday, there are, of course, comedy shows/happenings to go right along with it, especially ones celebrating black comedians, giving them shine when they still aren’t receiving it the way they deserve.

The very funny Dave Helem is putting on a very special stand-up showcase, Thank You Very Much, in South Central’s cultural hub, Leimert Park, at The Metaphor Club to highlight some of those very same comedians that represent some of LA’s very best.

For this Juneteenth show, Dave will bring in

Zainab Johnson (Upload, Bust Down)
Chris Spencer (Black-ish, The Real Husbands of Hollywood)
Clayton Thomas (Family Time, Uncle Buck)
Chinedu Unaka (Insecure, House Party)
Candice Thompson (The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon)

Thank You Very Much: A Juneteenth Show is set for Sat. Jun. 18th at 8PM PT, again, at The Metaphor Club. Tickets are $20 and you can (and should) go get them here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 51: Candice Thompson & Thriving?

March 17, 2021
News
candice thompson, netflix afterparty, rutherford falls

Candice Thompson has managed to thrive, as much as you can, in quarantine. She has been writing on The Netflix Afterparty, recording multiple podcasts, and manifesting her home to be as prepared for this time and the potential dystopian future. TCB’s Jake Kroeger and Candice have quite the time figuring out what they’re going to do in the not so distant future as the world keeps sinking into chaos (and yes, we talk aliens too). Also, “hot” takes on Rutherford Falls and the possibility of content consumption sinking after the pandemic ends.

Follow Candice @jokesbycandice and listen to The Struggle and look out for her new Spotify podcast, Noisy Neighbors.

This Thursday, it will have been a year since Peacock started prancing around Club Tee Gee over in the lovely part of LA known as Atwater Village. In that time, it has quickly grown into a neatly packed and produced, tight stand-up show that has become a neighborhood (and LA) favorite on Thursday nights. Going for an entire year, especially when you’re maintaining a high quality show every week is incredibly difficult and deserves a nod of admiration (in person at this week’s show preferably)

So, join host Kiran Deol and a very, very special, extra stacked line-up all for the always nice price of a $5 suggested donation to celebrate Peacock’s One Year Anniversary.

Well, we’d like to say that we gave you fair warning that Candice Thompson was on the rise a few years ago with our compilation album Comedians of Interest Vol. 1 where she was one of six personally handpicked acts.

Now, she has two late night sets under her belt along with writing on the new David Spade late night show, Lights Out.

So, this is just another friendly reminder to hop on board the  Candice-Thompson-train as it’s pretty great. See for yourself with this set from last Friday’s Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

We’ve got a good feeling that this show, The Professionals*, will be kind of like Tough Crowd with a modern twist (a thing we’ve been wishing would happen for awhile). Whether the comedians on the panel end up pulling off sounding like professionals outside of their areas of expertise or not, it’s an amazing line-up worthy of going to see do pretty much anything (we mean, just look at it).

Tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door. Go get them quick here.

Get in on “The Struggle”, Candice Thompson’s New Podcast

There are more than a handful of podcasts that dive into the anxieties, fears, insecurities, etc. of comedians, but they can often be, in an enlightening way, sobering.

Candice Thompson shines in her new podcast The Struggle as she strikes a balance between sympathy and empathy for all sorts of issues while also maintaining an undeniably upbeat tone with plenty of charisma to spare. Thompson is only a few episodes in, but her, her co-hosts Mal Hall and Jackie Fabulous, and her guests (Ramon Rivas and Justine Marino thus far) show off how struggles can translate directly into something that can be laughed at when gaining awareness and a bit of agency over said struggle.

So, listen, subscribe, and most importantly enjoy The Struggle with Candice Thompson.

Here’s another of our “secret” recordings from Comedians of Interest Vol. 1 (out tomorrow, FYI) from one Candice Thompson. Again, listen carefully and you’ll hear why you need to have her on a list of comedians you need to keep a close eye on everything that they do (i.e. go see them live, listen to their podcasts, watch all their videos, etc.)

Also, again, you can pre-order/buy Comedians of Interest Vol. 1 from AST Records here.

We added Talk Show the Game Show’s Guy Branum, James Adomian, who you might have seen wreak delightful havoc at LA Podcast Festival, and a flyer!

Also, we’ll be raffling some of those fancy enamel pins that are otherwise only available through Patreon and our brand new album from AST Records, Comedians of Interest Vol. 1.

Tickets are $10 if you get them in advance or $15 cash at the door.

The Comedy Bureau, an LA comedy institution that has served the art form of comedy and Los Angeles since 2010, has handpicked “secret” recordings of their “comedians of interest” and release them to the public on an album through the venerable AST Records. More specifically, these 6 acts contained within this record are comedians that TCB believes have not gotten nearly enough of the attention they deserve. They are hysterical, original, innovative, and should be watched be very close by all. Knowing this, commit their names to memory: Anna Seregina, James Austin Johnson, Ahmed Bharoocha, Candice Thompson, The Walsh Brothers, and Eric Dadourian.

-Jake Kroeger, Director of The Comedy Bureau

You can (and really, really should) get Comedians of Interest Vol. 1. It comes out on Friday, October 20th, but is available for pre-order now here.

Yes, The Comedy Bureau will have officially served the LA comedy scene for 7 years at the end of this month. That’s 56 years in dog years and (probably 70 in “bureau years”?)

This time, we actually took enough of a break to remind ourselves that we should put on a show (and actually try to make some money doing so).

As you can see from this scrawled upon napkin straight from the very desk of TCB itself, it ought to be a really good time. Also, there will be a raffle that includes fancy enamel pins, our album (more on that later), etc.

You can get tickets now for $10 or $15 cash at door. Get tickets, more details (that are more legible) here.

The short of the long of it is that not that “we’re” vastly understaffed.

Creepy Caress’ Brenda Colonna and Candice Thompson Launch “Offarious” Podcast

The very funny Candice Thompson and Brenda Colonna are branching out for their sketch group/series Creepy Caress to have a podcast at the Toadhop Network. Somewhat along the lines of a traditional radio show (it will stream every Thursday at 5PM PST) and a fresh departure from comedians just talking about comedy with other comedians, there will be sketches, guest comedians/artists riffing, and an anti-talk show aspect (we’re not sure if that means destroying desks like Eric Andre does on The Eric Andre Show, but we’re sure it’ll be a lot of fun).

Offarious (yes, that’s the melding of offensive and hilarious) launches today at 5PM and you can subscribe here.
