Pick of the Day: Community Power: Hugo Soto-Martinez Fundraiser (in LA) 11/16

November 12, 2021
News

Many of the very best line-ups for comedy shows often come with the purpose of raising money for a worthy cause. That was definitely true all of last summer as gala level line-ups assembled on Zoom to raise money for mutual aid, undocumented relief, and local representative campaigns.

That will be true yet again as Hugo Soto-Martinez is raising money for a run at LA City Council (quick reminder that two LA City Council members were indicted on federal charges in the last year or so and we need good folks in those seats) as someone who is a more fair, equitable, and safe life for Angelenos. Thus, he has been doing pop-up comedy fundraisers as of late.

This latest edition of Community Power will feature the stellar comedy stylings of:

Dan Mintz (Tina from Bob’s Burgers!)
Kate Berlant
James Adomian
Demi Adejuyigbe
Sandy Honig
Steve Hernandez
Andrea More

That’s beyond a stacked show on Tues. Nov. 16th at 7PM PT at Club Tee Gee and one that you pretty much shouldn’t miss for any reason. Tickets start at $10 and sales all go towards Hugo Soto-Martinez for City Council 2022!

Go get them here before they sell out (Tee Gee is a beautiful and very intimate venue, so space is limited, FYI).

The magic, mystery, and dankness of High Priestess is finally back! Hosts Sara June and Bri Pruett curate an enrapturing evening of comedy, witchy-ness, tarot, and cannabis. It’s a night for all the senses to be sure as well as a hearty laugh.

They’ve got a new home at the Atwater Village shop A Love Bizarre (3042 Glendale Blvd.) and they’ll be having their first 2020 show there on Sat. Feb. 8th at 7:30PM (doors 7PM).

Thus far, they’ve got a grand line-up of:
Giulia Rozzi
Jenny Yang
Nori Reed
Kimberly Clark
Rachel Scanlon

All of this wonder at High Priestess will only cost you $5 right now ($8 at door). You can (and very very much should) get your tickets here.

Underbelly, your favorite stand-ups-doing-anything-but-stand-up-comedy show is back.

For years, this show and hosts Chris Garcia and Ryan Singer have hopped from venue to venue bringing their comedic and mystical delights in the form of characters, songs, experiments, etc. all to bring the cutting edge in comedy with many of the city’s best.

So, this Saturday at Cahmadee Club (basement of Oeno Vino), another Underbelly will happen with:

Blair Socci
Maggie Maye
Anna Seregina
Greg Edwards
Alex Stone & Adam Dubowsky
plus Drennon Davis and Mike Nissen!!

Oh yeah, admission is FREE! Get more details, RSVP, etc. here.

At one of LA’s hippest venues Zebulon, performance artist/comedian Dynasty Handbag has been curating a hosting one of their, in our opinion, marquee nights with Weirdo Night! for two years (though it has been running a bit longer than that around town).

This transformative and hilarious evening collects all sorts of performers that are in or adjacent to comedy, bringing in a wonderfully bizarre collection of multi-disciplinary performers, magical musicians, and all other artists that defy categorization in a great way.

For their 2 Yr. Zebulon Anniversary this Sunday, they’ve got a line-up of Kate Berlant, Malik Gaines, Amelia Bande, Charles Galin, and, of course, Dynasty Handbag (Jibz Cameron).

Tickets are $15 and you can go get them right now right here.

Josh Fadem and Brent Weinbach, two comedians that are mastered in the art of being silly, will “lead” a “forum” on art. We’re not sure exactly how that’ll manifest, but we’re excited for whatever that will end up being.

Also, Ron Funches and Dan Mintz from Bob’s Burgers are just a few of their guests.

Tickets will be available at the door.

1) JON DALY IS… Ticklish Cage?

Ticklish Cage from Jon Daly

2) Fox pulled this segment of comedian Bob Oschack interviewing Asian USC students about the inclusion of Colorado and Utah in the newly formed PAC 12 Conference due to many in the Asian American community being deeply offended.  Apparently, Asian college students not knowing about the newest developments in collegiate level sports conferences is incredibly embarassing.  As an Asian American USC alumni, I could say that the clip isn’t all that offensive, but then again, I don’t really care about my ethnicity at all.  Also, lighten the fuck up. 3) Tonight on TV: Futurama gets their season finale in a way that they’ve never been drawn before (Comedy Central 10PM), Louie also reaches its season finale (FX 10:30PM), NTSF:SD:SUV has former Crossing Jordan star Jerry O’Connell (Adult Swim 12:15AM), and Thursdays are running out of things to watch.

1) Aubrey Plaza is “one of the most fascinating people” that Conan’s talked to into awhile.

2) Don Rickles on Jimmy Kimmel Live (including Parts 1 & 2).

3) Over the last few months, there has been a lot of talk about the consequences of talking about sexual assault and rape on stage and being aware of the sensitivity of audience members. Today, Barbara Holm gives an interesting flip on the debate in regards to hecklers sexually harassing comedians at Laughspin.

4) A guy sells punny-one liners in a park. There was a guy in Venice who just used to take donations and would make a living performing his act on the street. Is America prime for “street comedy”?
