I will do anything that @IanKarmel does. That’s why, I am writing for the new Late Late Show with James Corden.

— sean oconnor (@seanoconnz) December 12, 2014

This week has seen a lot of exciting developments for the upcoming Late Late Show with James Corden. The veteran producing team is set to perform and the amazing Reggie Watts is going to by Corden’s side as bandleader.

Additionally, the writing staff, so far, will have Sean O’Connor whose written at at Sports Show with Norm MacDonald, The ESPYs, and MTV Video Music Awards and Ian Karmel whose written at Chelsea Lately at its table. Both are also pretty damn funny stand-up comedians. With those two and probably more fine comedy folks to be announced, Corden’s era of The Late Late Show looks is going to have a nice kickoff.

2015 is still a few weeks away and Comedy Central already has a great line-up to kick off the year. Broad City and Kroll Show return and The Nightly Show w/Larry Wilmore and This Is Not Happening have their series premiere in January.

Kyle Kinane’s brand new special “I Liked His Old Stuff Better” is also coming next month to Comedy Central.

On top of all of that, Matt Braunger’s latest special “Big Dumb Animal”, shot earlier this year in NYC, directed by one of our favorites Steve Feinartz (Eddie Pepitone: In Ruins, The Bitter Buddha), will make its premiere after on Feb. 6th.

Braunger details it all in the latest episode of his Ding-Donger podcast.

In short, watch for all of this in a couple of weeks.

Critics’ Choice Awards Also Have Birdman and Grand Budapest Hotel Racking Up Nominations

December 15, 2014
Uncategorized

(via Variety)

Birdman and Grand Budapest Hotel have already been gathering up a lot of nominations at The Golden Globes and The SAG Awards and the 20th Annual Critics Choice Awards are no different. Between the two, they stacked 24 nominations in various categories, Birdman with 13 and Grand Budapest Hotel with 11.

There’s a weird genre fragmentation at The Critics’ Choice Awards that has gotten both films nominated for Best Picture and Best Comedy. Top Five, 22 Jump Street, St. Vincent, Chef, Neighbors, Obvious Child, The Skeleton Twins, Edge of Tomorrow, Inherent Vice, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Lego Movie also all got nominations in Comedy and Action categories.

Despite how continually odd it is that awards put drama above everything, Birdman and Grand Budapest Hotel give some hope that there might be happening less and less in the future.

The Critics Choice Awards will be televised live at A&E 6PM PST on Jan. 15th and hosted by Michael Strahan.

NBC Drops Must See TV Thursday Comedy Block; Sets Hour of Multi-Cam on Tues

December 15, 2014
Uncategorized

(via Deadline)

NBC has really stuck to the recent philosophy posed by their chairman Bob Greenblatt who said that the network had a “very drama-heavy midseason schedule” when asked about selling Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to Netflix.

Since the early 90s, NBC had their Must See TV comedy block scheduled in stone that saw the likes of Seinfeld, Friends, Will & Grace, The Office, Parks and Recreation, and more air in primetime. Now, as a sign of the times, they have dropped Must See TV altogether and made a comedy block of multi-cam sitcoms Undateable and One Big Happy set for Tues. in 2015.

With this big programming shift, we’d be curious to see what percent of the entire viewing audience of any of NBC’s comedies over the last year watched the show live versus on an online streaming service, legal and illegal, of some kind on their own time.

So, Cubans Are Now Making Fun of Their Government on Cuban TV

An AP profile of televised Cuban comedy is showing that there’s movement in being able to satirize the bigger issues in Cuba.

A growing number of shows and comedians are speaking out through jokes about the inherent struggles of living in Cuba in its current state on shows like “Vivir del cuento”, which definitely sounds like progress.

The revered name of Castro is a name that’s still a sacred cow apparently. However, if they keep heading in more freely expressive direction with their comedy, we’re sure that won’t last forever.

Stephen Colbert and Craig Ferguson Sign Off From Their Shows This Week

December 15, 2014
Uncategorized
cbs, colbert report, craig ferguson, stephen colbert, the late late show

The Colbert Report and Craig Ferguson’s run at The Late Late Show come to their end this week. The final episodes air Thurs. and Fri. on Comedy Central and CBS at 11:30PM and 12:35AM respectively.

Whether you’ll be able to feel it or not, this is the end of an era in late night televised comedy. Colbert’s shift from cable to network is big, going from a very successful, but very atypical late night show in The Colbert Report to the most traditional one at The Late Show, though many of us believe Colbert will be able to update it for his current fan base.

Craig Ferguson claims that he’ll go walk the earth and solve crimes with his robot skeleton sidekick Geoff Peterson after he leaves his show. However, we think that it’s only a few months to a year off before Ferguson is back hosting a show. Again, for our money, he’s one of the best interviewers in late night history. That’s why it’s particularly painful to see that CBS uploaded very few, short, out-of-context clips of his show on his YouTube channel. Ferguson could easily get in on the same demographics as late night Internet kings like Fallon, Kimmel, and Conan, but alas, you would have to watch a whole episode at CBS.com just to watch a whole interview or a clip of stand-up, which is something very few people, especially in key demos, want to do.

No matter how you feel about it, both shows have always been worth tuning in for and you definitely should tune in for their swan songs this week.

What might be most fascinating is that the final guests of The Late Late Show and The Colbert Report will be Jay Leno and The Grim Reaper AKA Grimmy, respectively. Somehow, that’s a very fitting contrast between old and new late night.

December 16, 2014

The premiere of The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore is just over a month away on Jan. 19th and so promotion of it should be ramping up right about now.

They have just gotten an official logo for the show, as you can see above, that’s a decided departure for The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. It’s minimalist and clean not unlike the logo for another Daily Show alum’s post-Daily Show Daily Show-esque show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

However, we also think The Nightly Show logo is very reminiscent of another Comedy Central series that dealt with current issues from awhile ago, Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn. If that somehow means that they were be echoes of that in The Nightly Show, we’re on board.

Eric Andre has established himself as the type of talk show guest that doesn’t merely do a simple panel interview. Something always goes down when Eric sits on the couch. A lot of the time that “something” is him getting naked.

This time on Conan, Eric decided to go do his own monologue, which he “thinks” is better than Conan as well as try to dissect what’s “wrong” with his Tinder profile.

Also, though it might not make sense until after watching, props go, as they usually do every night on Conan to Andrés du Bouchet.

MTV2’s panelist show Guy Code is not only on to its fifth season starting Jan. 14th, but it’s adding to a very solid handful of comedians to its roster.

This includes Byron Bowers, Matteo Lane, Fahim Anwar, Matthew Broussard, Monroe Martin, and more.

If you know this group at all, there should be a vastly differing perspective about whatever they’re trying to break down on Guy Code as well as it probably being really funny.

Seth Rogen Clears Up Any Controversy About “The Interview” on The Colbert Report

December 16, 2014
Uncategorized

The so-called Guardians of Peace that have hacked, leaked, and doxxed Sony Pictures seem to have the sole goal of destroying the movie The Interview wherein a fictionalized attempt to assassinate North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-Un is attempted.

As a result, security was beefed up at the recent premiere here in LA and Rogen personally thanked Sony’s Amy Pascal for having the balls to make the movie. No incidents of note happened and were reported at the premiere.

Last night, Seth Rogen sat down with Stephen Colbert to chat about the movie and what possibly North Korea and the Guardians of Peace could possibly be so absurdly mad at that they use their capabilities to denounce an “assassination farce comedy”.

Still, there are new threats by The Guardians of the Peace that reference 9/11 that claim, “We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places “The Interview” be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to. Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made. The world will be full of fear. Remember the 11th of September 2001. We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time.”

As was this posted about this morning, you can see clearly that they missed out on the premiere, which took place last week.

In thinking what they could do as hackers to people going to watch the movie, maybe we all should just pay cash to see The Interview when it comes in theaters on Christmas?

Chris Rock’s highly anticipated Top Five is now playing in plenty of theaters now after its release this past weekend.

In the middle of a crowded field of dark, subversive fare at your local movie theater, writer/director/star Chris Rock manages to balance a satire of Hollywood and being laugh out loud throughout in Top Five.

The cameos, of which they are many including Jerry Seinfeld, Brian Regan, Adam Sandler, Kevin Hart, Whoopi Goldberg, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, and Cedric the Entertainer are pretty damn fantastic and worth the price of admission alone.

So, go see Top Five now.

Fighters For a Free North Korea To Drop in DVDs of “The Interview” Into North Korea

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

As the reason for the Guardians of Peace’s hack of Sony, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s The Interview has been undergoing a lot of scrutiny over the last few weeks. Despite Seth Rogen’s appearance on The Colbert Report from last night, Rogen and James Franco have cancelled their upcoming media appearances to promote the movie according to BuzzFeed.

Yet, there might be hope yet for this movie as an activist group known as Fighters For a Free North Korea are planning to drop DVD copies of The Interview, as soon as they’re available, into North Korea via balloons. They’ve done the same for radios in order to bring the outside world to those living in the completely isolated North Korean borders. Undoubtedly, watching the movie in North Korea is probably committing high treason and we wouldn’t want to imagine that punishment that goes along with that.

So, this whole incident is undoubtedly going to be made into a movie or documentary feature, right?
