Conan and Team Coco Making Its Way Finally to the UK

August 4, 2014
Uncategorized

(via BBC)

Unlike in Sweden where Conan O’Brien has been hailed a hero for his comedic stylings and bearing a resemblance to a prime minister of the country, Conan, along with a lot of late night talk shows here in the U.S., haven’t made a big splash in the UK.

Fortunately, that’s all about to change as episodes of Conan on TBS will now be broadcast in the UK via TruTV.

This makes us wonder if folks across the pond are even aware of Conan’s String Dance, the Masturbating Bear, or Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. If not, they’re in for a real treat.

Yes, David Rees Made an Impromptu Musical About Paper Airplanes

We sincerely hope that you’re watching Going Deep with David Rees and having as much in doing so as we are.

Just watch David not only make unbelievable paper airplanes, but also sing about them on the spot a la Les Mis. With all seriousness, you’ve probably never had as much fun learning as an adult without David Rees.

Once you’re hooked on that, tune in tonight for a new episode at 10PM on the National Geographic Channel.

Making Money Off YouTube Isn’t Exactly The Gold Rush You Might Think It Is

Fast Company looked into the financial viability of being a YouTube star by interviewing actual YouTube stars to see how they make their living.

Hopefully, you won’t be surprised that it isn’t an overnight sensation and that getting a million hits on a video is far from getting a million dollars.

If anything, you should be prepared to do it for free for awhile and engage in a lot of partnering with sponsors/product placement/that thing John Oliver just talked about on Last Week Tonight, “native advertising”.

The geckos that Russia sent into space to observe while mating, then lost contact with have been found. John Oliver issued a call to arms for the whole world to urge Russia to #GoGetThoseGeckos on Last Week Tonight and now those geckos have apparently been found.

#WeGotThoseGeckos is now official as you can hear from Oliver himself, even though how responsible the hashtag was for their recovery is up for debate.

Ground Floor Adding Emily Heller in Season 2

With the addition of Emily Heller to the cast, TBS’ Ground Floor will know have two absolutely hilarious comedians on the show as regulars. Heller joins Rory Scovel for Ground Floor’s second season as a socially awkward business wunderkind. Joining the cast also marks a move up for Emily who used to write for another Bill Lawrence show, Surviving Jack.

We’re glad to see that Ground Floor EP Bill Lawrence has pretty great taste when it comes to stand-ups.

Film Adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” Has a Cast

August 5, 2014

When mashing up zombies and Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Seth Grahame-Smith scored a hit novel with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies 5 years ago.

Now, in 2014, the official film adaptation of the novel has just cast Lily James, Sam Riley, and Bella Heathcote. In addition to that, you should also note that the script is written by both Burr Steers and the Oscar nominated writer/director David O. Russell.

So, we’re guessing that this will bring more to the table than Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, the last film adapted from a Seth Grahame-Smith book.

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman Will Seem Like One Continuous Shot

(via Slashfilm)

The new trailer for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman already has us pretty excited for the movie. However, according to Jon Favreau, there’s something even more enticing about the movie.

The performing of a Broadway play as a last ditch attempt by a former action star to get back into the spotlight will also almost be all one shot. The spare cuts throughout the film are hidden making it seem like its been carefully composed into one continuous shot for the film’s duration, not unlike the beginning of Gravity.

We can’t wait to see Birdman, but we’ll have to wait until Oct. 17th when it hits theaters.

Ricky Gervais Will Make David Brent Rock Mockumentary “Life On The Road” Starting Next Year

Looks like David Brent is headed the way of Alan Partridge. He’s not going to be held up in a radio station as a hostage like Steve Coogan’s Partridge, but Ricky Gervais’ Brent from the original The Office is officially getting a full length feature movie.

Following his escapades into making a go at his dream of being a rock star, Life On The Road will follow Brent on a self-financed tour. Production starts in 2015 and we can only now ponder if Gervais playing music as the character of David Brent is going better when Gervais made a legitimate attempt at being a pop star.

Watch Jon Stewart Make a Great Interview Out of Almost Nothing

Last night on The Daily Show, Elisabeth Moss was the guest as she was promoting her new film The One I Love. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the film, she can’t really talk about it all that much just like so can’t talk about it that much, leaving little to talk about.

So, that leaves Jon Stewart to showcase his marvelous interviewing skills by figuring something else out, seemingly on the spot and doing most of the talking. It’s probably the most undervalued skill set of a TV show host. We would be surprised if this was all covered in a pre-interview.

Watch it all here.

Adult Swim Adding Another Animated Series “Mr. Pickles” To Line-Up Next Month

On Sept. 21st, Adult Swim will premiere a brand new animated series Mr. Pickles from Will Carsola and Dave Stewart that, in fitting with Adult Swim’s branding, follows a secretly evil border collie named Mr. Pickles.

There isn’t a trailer yet, but the voices of Jay Johnston from Mr. Show, Frank Collison, Kaitlyn Robrock, along with Will Carsola and Dave Stewart make for a solid cast.

Along with Mike Tyson Mysteries also set for a series premiere in a few months, this should be quite the fall for animated series at Adult Swim.

Carrie Brownstein has made waves in the comedy world ever since the debut of Portlandia on IFC. Now, her talents are being tapped elsewhere as she has just set to adapt the UK series Lost in Austen into a movie.

Having someone in Brooklyn be transported into the world of Jane Austen is definitely within Brownstein’s wheelhouse and we’re excited to see what she comes up with.

So, this does count as our 2nd post about an adaptation of something based on the works of Jane Austen today and we can only hope that they’re both as enjoyable as Austenland.

Still, NBC’s fall comedy line-up (Bad Judge, Marry Me, Mysteries of Laura, A to Z) has yet to premiere and survive the gauntlet of their first season.

Bill Cosby’s Return to a Sitcom Now Closer with Sony TV/NBC Deal Closed

A sitcom centered bringing Bill Cosby back to NBC has been in negotiations for months now, but a deal between NBC and Sony TV has now the project apparently set on track currently with a script commitment.

Cosby will be the patriarch of an extended family and pass down his wisdom to them, one of which will be Mike O’Malley. There’s a big penalty for NBC to pay if they don’t order a pilot, but that possibility is hard to imagine even though TV is a different landscape than when The Cosby Show was in its heyday.

Comedy Central is going further into the Nerdist/Chris Hardwick business after the sucess of “@midnight” by ordering a pilot produced by Hardwick for a variety show intended to be weekly.

Justin Willman who you might know as a charming magician or the host of Cupcake Wars would be set to host what would be a mix of sketch, stand-up, “social experiments”, and more.

This might prove to be another nice way to expand Comedy Central’s branding as a variety show doesn’t currently exist on Comedy Central.

The latest exploits of the ever enterprising Nathan Fielder involves an online invitation service, an annoying person that one would know too well, and Nathan’s go to Bill Gates impersonator.

If that’s not enticing enough, the plan to develop a service where you could send certain invites to people that, perhaps, you work with, but don’t like and it would go directly to their spam folder.

That’s pretty clever, but the “test party” that Nathan throws to see if the service works is even better because that Bill Gates impersonator is there.

The Super Bowl Half Time Show is up there in terms of the biggest stage to perform on. Thus, only the biggest acts get to play it like Beyonce, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, etc.

With a new album debuting at #1 on Billboard, Weird Al Yankovic might just be a great candidate to play that very same half time show, which is the purpose of a petition that has started by Weird Al’s fans.

We sincerely hope this happens to not only have Yankovic’s name mentioned in the same sentence with Super Bowl Half Time alums, but we’re sure it will be one hell of a show.
