Award Winning Comedy-Horror/True Crime Podcast “The Last Podcast on the Left” Coming Out With a Book

One of our all time favorite podcasts, The Last Podcast on the Left, is coming to the book game with Last Book on the Left, Volume 1: Serial Killers.

Not only are we excited that Marcus Parks, Henry Zebrowski, and Ben Kissel will be publishing a book, furthering their dominance in the comedy-horror arena, but it would seem Vol.1 means that they are going to be publishing a series of books.

Currently, the LP on the Left team is writing the book, but we’ll definitely let you know when it goes up for pre-sale.

We can only imagine that there will be tons of hilarious footnotes throughout, some of which will probably argue with other footnotes specifically between Henry and Ben.

Amber Ruffin To Host the 22nd Annual Webby Awards

Late Night with Seth Meyers stand-out Amber Ruffin is getting on the awards hosting track with this Webby Awards hosting gig. If her track record on Late Night serves as any indicator, we’ll be excited to see what Ruffin does for the ceremony, which is pretty weird as it is (ex. acceptance speeches have to be 5 words).

Seth Meyers alums are doing quite well as of late. Ruffin undoubtedly has bigger and better things coming her way on top of the Webby Awards in the not so distant future and Michelle Wolf is already having a hell of a year (WHCD, Netflix late night series)

Judd Apatow’s 2 Part Documentary “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling” Premieres Tonight

It’s rare that you get such an in depth look not only into the mind of a comedian, but a deeper look into a being who simultaneously was one of the most beloved comedians of all time and sincerely pondering the meaning of it all and our connection to each other and the universe.

That’s only possible because the late Garry Shandling kept plenty of notes and diaries for several years and Judd Apatow, a disciple of sorts of Shandling’s, wanted to make a documentary about him.

Here’s Apatow giving a bit of a taste of the doc on Conan.

With that in mind, you can catch the world premiere of The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling tonight and tomorrow on HBO at 8PM.

Watch Trailer for What Might Be New Zealand’s Latest Comedy Gem “The Breaker Upperers”

New Zealand’s Madeleine Sami and Jackie Van Beek mischievously turn the romantic comedy genre upside down with their film The Breaker Upperers, which focuses on an actual “breaking-up agency”.

In other words, if you’re too scared to initiate break-up with a significant other, there are “guns for hire” in this movie that will facilitate a break-up on your behalf. The concept itself has loads of potential for devilish fun and the trailer definitely delivers on that.

Just so you know, The Breaker Upperers has Taika Waititi, director of Thor: Ragnarok and America’s current favorite New Zealand export, attached and just played by SXSW. We can only hope that means that it will find its way into theaters across North America soon.

So, come Wednesday, April 4th at 8PM, head to The Clubhouse (1607 N. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles, CA) for FREE (they do accept donations) for the 3 Year Anniversary of Idiots and also catch the likes of Nicole Byer, Howard Kremer, Nick Rutherford, Jenny Yang, and more!

Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs Will Have You Smiling Almost the Whole Way Through

Whether you’re a diehard Wes Anderson aficionado or not, it’s pretty hard to resist a rag tag crew of stop motion animation dogs and a determined young boy pilot trying to save all dog kind in the Isle of Dogs.

As with all Wes Anderson movies, everything in Isle of Dogs is so unapologetically crafted to the auteur’s signature style and yet done in a way that we never found rote or overdone. Also, seeing a Wes Anderson movie set in Japan, done inclusively and respectfully with Japanese actors voicing Japanese characters and a respected Japanese talent Kunichi Nomura consulting on the look and feel of the movie, is pretty spectacular on its own.

From the opening on, we were smiling for nearly the entire run time and found ourselves indulging in a childlike giggle throughout. Sincerely, as a cynical adult living in the bizarre time in human history that we live in right now, we never thought that was possible again.

So, go see Isle of Dogs wherever and whenever you can. Get tickets here.

Long ago, in the last era of big time anti-drug campaigns, there was one particular ad that suggested that your brain on illegal controlled substances was like an egg being cracked and fried on a pan.

With all the years that have passed, such an ad seems even more ridiculous. Corden’s The Late Late Show reminds us of that and points out what probably happened during the shooting of said ad.

Adam, for years consistently combines sharp observation with a rambunctious spirit all foregrounded by his great talent for painting detailed, layered pictures with words.

Meltdown Comics and Nerdmelt Showroom to Close

Meltdown Comics and Nerdmelt Showroom to Close

It would no exaggeration to say that we’ve cumulatively spent entire days of our life hanging out the backroom of Meltdown Comics, an unmistakable LA cultural landmark on a Sunset Blvd. chock full of them, catching some of the best comedy we’ve ever seen.

Of course, that back room is more formally known as the Nerdmelt Showroom. With the just announced closing of Meltdown Comics comes the closing of that back room theater as well as the Nerdist School and the podcast studio that resided upstairs above the ecosystem of comedy, comic books, D&D, Mario Kart, comic book signings, screen printing, etc. etc. Nerdmelt specifically saw the entire run of The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail, the flagship show of Nerdmelt, which lead to a Comedy Central series that was shot in that very back room.

There was really something magical about the room that actually transcended the notion of it being at the back of a comic book store. At least that’s what we think that’s partially responsible for seeing one of our favorite performances of all time: Rory Scovel roasting the house band on Greg Barris’ Heart of Darkness in sheer, pitch black darkness, seemingly in the voice of Werner Herzog.

FYI, the last show for Nerdmelt is Comedians Cinema Club on March 30th and they have shows every night up until then. We highly urge you to catch one of them if not all of them.

R.I.P., albeit pre-emptively, Meltdown and Nerdmelt.

Adult Swim Will Be Thowing an LA Music and Comedy Festival This Fall

For awhile, we had Riot LA. Every now and again, we have Festival Supreme.

However, big time festivals featuring comedy in Los Angeles are had to come by. Adult Swim, fortunately, will be giving it a go by throwing a music and comedy festival at the Row DTLA this fall.

So far, a line-up has yet to be announced, but you can count on Run The Jewels being there. So, maybe, just maybe, you can forgive the delay on a new season of Rick and Morty if you’re in and around LA?

John Oliver’s Parody Children’s Book About Mike Pence’s Rabbit Marlon Bundo Sells Out First Run; 2nd Print on the Way

So, is “The John Oliver Effect” still not a real thing?

John Oliver’s latest deep dive segment on Last Week Tonight dived into Mike Pence, the current Vice President of the United States.

In this segment, you might have learned that Pence has a pet rabbit named Marlon Bundo and has subsequently written a children’s book focused on his rabbit. Oliver and his Last Week Tonight team saw this happening and made their own pro-LGBTQ children’s book also about Marlon Bundo and had it published and distributed online with all proceeds going to the Trevor Project and Aids United.

The book’s first print run sold out and became an Amazon bestseller in less than a day, prompting for a 2nd print.

You can get more details and get your own copy of A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo here.

If you can’t wait that long, you can get an e-book or audiobook version (featuring the voices of Jim Parsons, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jeff Garlin, Ellie Kemper, John Lithgow, Jack McBrayer, and RuPaul).

While “The John Oliver Effect” may still be up for debate, at the very least this is a great example that comedy can actually make a direct difference in the world for the better.
