Hugh Laurie to Star in Armando Iannucci’s Space Comedy Pilot at HBO

Hugh Laurie to Star in Armando Iannucci’s Space Comedy Pilot at HBO

Avenue 5 might only be a pilot at the premium cable network, but Hugh Laurie and Armando Iannucci only sounds like a winning combination. Put the setting of space on top of that and it seems like a delicious icing on an already gorgeous cake.

We’re imagining a House M.D.-ish Hugh Laurie perhaps in some sort of position of power at NASA or fictional equivalent. Even if we’re far off the mark, this is definitely one project to keep track of.

Also, this would probably be a great opportunity for Iannucci to rightfully send up Trump’s idiotic waste of the budge known as the “Space Force”.

‘The End Of The F***ing World’ Renewed For Season 2 By Netflix

2018 started off with the debut of this dark rom com series from across the pond. Acclaim and, just maybe, a timely title has lead to a renewal for the series from both Netflix and Channel 4 in the UK.

Perhaps James and Alyssa will be the power couple for 2018?

Tiffany Haddish’s Next Hour Special Will Be Coming to Netflix in 2019

Just in case where you’ll be able to see Tiffany Haddish next after the bevy of movies, TV, and Groupon commercials this year, know that a new hour stand-up special is on its way to, where else, Netflix next year.

Since her last special was called “She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood!”, we’re curious as to what this next special will be called. She Ready! 2 The World Ready for Her? 2 She 2 Ready? The Last Black Unicorn Rides Again?

No matter what she calls it, this will be one of the bigger releases for Netflix next year.

Norm MacDonald’s Netflix Show “Norm MacDonald has a Show” to Premiere Next Month with Lorne Michaels, Judge Judy as Guests

Sure, Norm MacDonald didn’t end up being the host of The Late Late Show after Craig Ferguson.

However, what started out as Norm and sidekick Adam Eget hanging out on the Video Podcast Network has now upgraded to Netflix as Norm MacDonald has a Show.

The premiere is set for Fri., Sept. 14th where 10 one-hour episodes will all be released, per Netflix’s usual way of releasing content. Norm will get to chat with the likes of aforementioned Lorne Michaels and Judge Judy as well as David Letterman, Michael Keaton, M. Night Shyamalan, and Drew Barrymore.

Also, in the press release it should be noted that, apparently, “David Letterman serves as location scout”.

We’re just going to take that as a hint that Norm will be using the Netflix budget afforded to him for some top shelf Norm MacDonald hijinks.

Well, if you’ve want to see Eric Andre do an hour of stand-up in LA, you could have a chance next month at UCB Franklin. Advance tickets are sold out, but there will be a stand-by line, so, we suggest, plan accordingly to show up early.

Niecy Nash Will Be the Host of a TNT Late-Night Show Pilot

Niecy Nash Will Be the Host of a TNT Late-Night Show Pilot

Niecy Nash of both Claws and Reno 911! fame getting a pilot for a late night might be signaling a new trend. Along with Michelle Wolf’s The Break was just cancelled at Netflix and Busy Philipps getting ready for Busy Tonight, it might seem late night might be shifting away from off-shoots of The Daily Show and Last Week Tonight into something that’s more personal and less socio-political.

Also, Niecy, if this show gets picked up, would also be one of many late night hosts these days that didn’t come from a stand-up comedy background, which used to be the primary pedigree for those hosting late night.

Called Naked with Niecy Nash will be curious to see where this might end up being like as “no topic will be off limits” and it will have a “late night feel”. That could mean any number of things at this point, but that’s appropriate as we feel as though the world of late night is heading into uncharted waters.

Things Get a “Little” Strange When Craig Robinson Wears a Tam O’Shanter Hat in ‘Beverly Luff Linn’ Trailer

Often times, the best trailers get you intrigued with a movie without really telling you what’s going on. You’re confused, yet, maybe you want to see more.

Such is the case with the trailer for An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, directed by Jim Hosking and co-written by Hosking and David Wike. There seems to be a caper afoot, but the hype over a stage show that stars a man named Beverly Luff Linn (played by Craig Robinson) in Scottish garb seems to take precedence over any confusion (even though it’s not quite clear what the show is).

See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn in theaters and On Demand & Digital starting October 19th.

Tom Segura & Christina Pazsitzky Get Put Pilot Order for “The Little Things” at CBS

Tom Segura and Christina Pazsitzky, both very funny stand-ups in their own right (go watch the four Netflix specials between the both of them in case you’re not familiar), are now in development for making a sitcom based on their lives married to each other and raising kids.

Fans of their hit podcast Your Mom’s House ought to be especially excited as there is a decent chance you might get to see them together on screen in a scripted series as opposed to just a recording studio.

Also, we’ll be curious to see what they’ll be able to do/get away with over at CBS (or maybe CBS is getting set to be a tad bit more edgy with their sitcoms?).

Epix Orders Upcoming Stand-Up Comic Showcase Series ‘Unprotected Sets’

As Netflix has spent much of their cache in stand-up comedy on the biggest names around and stand-up seems to unfortunately be mostly an afterthought in late night, there is a growing window for other folks to tap into comedians that have yet to get their first break.

Epix is going in on this opportunity with 12 episodes of a stand-up showcase series called Unprotected Sets with Page Hurwitz showrunning and Wanda Sykes EP’ing focusing on comics on the rise.

It’s interesting to note that they won’t be shooting in America’s comedy hubs of LA, NYC, or even Chicago, but, instead, in Portland, San Diego, Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Minneapolis.

No word on who is on the show as of yet, but you’ll definitely know when the show premieres on Friday, October 5th on Epix.

My Favorite Murder to Launch ‘Exactly Right’, Their Very Own Podcast Network, on Stitcher

If you’re a long time listener or even just started to listen to My Favorite Murder, you might have some idea how big they’ve gotten merely by the fact that they’re now doing ad reads for Diet Coke.

Essentially, Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark have amassed such a following with their true crime comedy podcast (in fact, they have more listeners than many TV shows have viewers) that they’ve been given the podcast equivalent of a lucrative overall deal at a studio or network in order to launch their own production banner, appropriately named after a frequent phrase said by Karen herself.

We personally can’t wait to see what Karen and Georgia decide to incubate and develop under Exactly Right. Perhaps, a show called “Corner Corner Corner”?

Fun fact, another podcast that somewhat recently launched their own podcast network off the back of their own success just so happened to be another true crime comedy podcast, Last Podcast on the Left (they launched the Last Podcast Network).

Hannah Gadsby Will Be Coming Out with Memoir “Ten Steps to Nanette” Next Year

Reportedly coming out in the U.S. via Ballantine Books, there will be a book from Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby following her life before Nanette, a comedy special that has made her internationally famous.

What’s intriguing to us here is that a big face of Nanette is attempting to dissect the nature of comedy and this book, we would suppose, will go into the process that led to that. Maybe there will even be a diagram for how Gadsby’s describes the role of tension in comedy.

A specific date in 2019 has yet to be announced, but we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop.

The humor of Guy Branum is so exquisite in its careful juxtaposition of literary references and historical events from Canada (even though he’s not Canadian) and elsewhere into jokes about the world that he and the rest of us live in. It’s so refined and yet, we feel, accessible to those not as well read as Guy (that includes most folks by the way).

The canvas of an entire book, specifically the recently released My Life as a Goddess, allows Guy to really flex his brilliance and he definitely delivers in this regard. Really, there are very, very few writers and comedians that can circumnavigate the highs and lows of culture, both popular and sophisticated, in such an entertaining way as Guy does.

So, go get and make your Summer (or whatever season it may be) better My Life as a Goddess: A Memoir Through (Un)popular Culture now wherever you get your books.

Danny McBride Takes Boneheaded Vengeance on the Housing Market Crash in “Arizona” (Trailer)

Almost without question, Danny McBride has made America fall in love with his spot on portrayals of misguided rage. Watching such a thing with the backdrop of the current moment is even more perfect pairing than when Foot Fist Way was whispered about between Adam McKay and Will Ferrell.

Arizona, a feature film debut for director Jonathan Watson and writer Luke Del Tredici (producer on 30 Rock, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Bored to Death), follows McBride as a victim of the Subprime Mortgage Crisis/House Market Crash from almost a decade ago who opts to get revenge.

If The Big Short had a cinematic universe, this would likely be a story within it.

The trailer promises some dark fun and you can see all of it for yourself here.

Arizona hits theaters later this month on Aug. 24th.

Weird Al Yankovic to be honored with star on the Walk of Fame on Aug. 27 | via @wofstargirl”

This is probably an appropriate icing on the cake for Weird Al Yankovic, who is probably the most successful song parodist of all time, probably by several miles.

To our knowledge, there hasn’t been another record of parody songs by someone who isn’t Weird AL that went to #1 overall on the album charts, kicking off a massive, massive international tour. That’ll probably be the case for several years to come.

Also, It probably won’t happen, but it’d be great if Weird Al’s star took over a certain current POTUS’ star on the Walk of Fame.
