Netflix’s 47-Comedy-Specials-From-Around-The-World Event “Comedians of the World” to Happen on New Year’s Day

December 5, 2018

Earlier this year, Netflix announced that they were going to do a simultaneous drop of over 30 comedy specials from comedians around the world.

Talk of when that would happen was vague, but, just yesterday, the streaming service giant announced that they’ve kicked up the number of specials to 47, will be doing it on New Year’s Day, probably when you have 48 spare hours of time to watch all of it, and are continuing their run on the most generic sounding name for their stand-up series by calling this “Comedians of the World” (the others being The Standups and The Comedy Lineup)

For the US, specials from Nicole Byer, Chris D’Elia, Neal Brennan, and Nick Swardson will be dropping. Here’s a peek of some of the other specials that are set to come on Jan. 1st, 2019.

So, like the globe being swallowed by the smiley face in this poster, prepare to be swallowed up by stand-up as soon as 2019 starts.

With the horrific damage that the fires took on California, there are plenty of big, fantastic benefit shows coming up that will raise money for victims of said fires.

This includes:

Judd & Adam & Friends @ Largo at the Coronet Theatre Fri. Dec. 14th 8PM (currently sold out)

Holidaze! @ Dynasty Typewriter Fri. Dec. 14th 7PM, $15 in adv., $20 at door

The Comedy Store Festival @ Fonda Theatre Sat Dec. 15th 8PM $46-$131

If you can swing it, you should go to all of them as they’re all very stacked line-ups and, in the spirit of the holidays, it’s a great opportunity to give to people very much in need.

The Good Place Renewed for a Fourth Season at NBC

Well, well, well. Here’s some good news with no strings attached.

By the way, at this pace with The Office, Parks and Recreation, The Good Place, and the recently-transplanted-to-NBC Brooklyn Nine-Nine, we wouldn’t be surprised if Mike Schur ended up running NBC or, at least, NBC comedy if that’s what he wanted to do.

Almost Exactly Like on Nathan for You, Amazon Is Touting How One of Their Delivery People Lost Weight from Delivering Packages

“You know the world is in a great place when our largest corporations are literally using the same strategies as Nathan for You“

-@nathanfielder

Well, we wish we could be more surprised that this happened, but since a TV network followed in the footsteps of a Chappelle’s Show sketch of “Trading Spouses” and made Wife Swap almost 15 years ago, it was almost inevitable that one of Nathan’s ludicrous business ideas from Nathan For You would actually happen without his help.

In the third season of Nathan For You, Nathan suggests that a moving company save money by replacing paid employees with incorporating a workout regimen that involves moving people’s stuff. Now, a woman who delivers packages for Amazon loses 100 pounds and her corporate overlords just pointed out how their delivery program could help you lose weight.

While you can say this is an instance of life imitating art, it hurts a little more when corporations are imitating the satire about him that was heightened for comedic effect.

Perhaps, seeing comedy and satire as agents for change is a fool’s errand, but at least you unequivocally know the absurdity of what’s happening when it’s happening.

Samantha Bee Launches Her Own Production Company Called Swimsuit Competition

If any of you thought the outcry against Sam Bee for using a certain expletive in reference to Ivanka Trump was going to impede her progress, know that she just launched her own production company that will produce narrative and documentary projects, mainly, for TV. We imagine that it’ll take a cue tone-wise and follow the M.O. of Full Frontal, which we’re on board for.

Also, we dig that she calls it something fun and edgy like Swimsuit Competition as opposed to individual numbers and letters together or various landscape features or locations.

Watch Trailer for Ellen DeGeneres’ Long Awaited Next Stand-Up Special “Relatable”

It has been, as has been mentioned plenty in the lead up to this special, 15 years since Ellen DeGeneres’ last stand-up special. Within this trailer, it seems she is well aware of that fact and that she has risen up the ranks to being one of the biggest and longest running daytime talk show hosts, a place far from the rest of us.

Yet, her charm still seems to be well intact and this hour might be, of the comedy specials that Netflix has had with the biggest stars in comedy, may have the broadest appeal and success.

See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for it to start streaming on Netflix on Dec. 18th.

Andre Hyland’s “self-proclaimed mogul” Jesse Miller is back at again with another edition of his Jesse Miller Talk Show. Unlike most talk show hosts, Jesse often moshes during his monologue, wears sunglasses the whole time, has a metal-ish house band led solely by Daryl, and often makes out with his other co-host Tanya.

It’s a talk show that is just “straight up” unlike any other talk show.

Also, Kate Berlant, Nick Thune, and J.D. Dillard are set as guests for this time around at Dynasty Typewriter next week.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at door. Go get’em here.

Bryan Cook and Andy Wood will be celebrating the 1 year anniversary of getting comedians to talk up and even perform their guilty pleasure songs on Guilty Treasure. There’s an awesome live band that backs up everyone on the show and (possibly) makes the songs better than the original.

For this anniversary edition, Matt Braunger, Arden Myrin, Andrés du Bouchet, Kara Klenk, and TJ Chambers are on deck.

Tickets are $12.50 and it’ll all be happening this Wednesday, December 5th at 7PM at Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. Get tickets in advance here.

Mike Birbiglia and Ira Glass Are Taking Submissions for Mike’s (Sort of) Understudy for “The New One” on Broadway

The announcement continues:

But – next best thing – on January 16th, you’ll perform your monologue on the Cort Theatre stage introduced by This American Life’s Ira Glass. In other words … your own Broadway debut! (Nathan Lane: please do not apply.)

To be clear, I don’t want you to impersonate me. I want to see YOURversion of it. You can post the videos on Instagram or Twitter or Facebook with the hashtag #BirbigsUnderstudy. Be sure to tag @NewOneBway!

Thanks for throwing your hat in the ring! Really looking forward to this.

Love, Mike.

Even though it’s ultimately a minute or so of stage time and you’ll be performing a monologue from Mike’s old solo shows, this definitely is something you might want to get in on.

Also, we would not be surprised if this ends up being the seed or a major plot point for Mike’s next show.

The Favourite Might Be the Weirdest and Funniest English Period Piece You’ll Ever See

November 30, 2018
Uncategorized

Filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos has firmly established himself as a convention-defying auteur at this point. Look no further to the genre-upending The Lobster to see Lanthimos’ engrossing style reveling in its dystopian vision of the future as much as its very successful to put a romantic comedy within in said vision.

When it comes to films set in England in centuries past, they’re usually some maudlin Merchant Ivory romance. The idea of doing a dissection of nobility, power, and the existential nature of it all and making it all darkly funny seems a little farfetched to say the least.

Yet, Lanthimos and writers Tony McNamara and Deborah Davis accomplish just that by weaving a forbidden love triangle and a struggle for status in 18th century England with The Favourite. The backdrop of the nobility wasting their time with pomp, circumstance, and racing animals versus their debate of whether England should stay at war with France ratchets up a certain modern-feeling absurdity throughout. The perfectly measured performances of Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, and Emma Stone really complete Lanthimos’ lavish and ambitious vision of The Favourite.

Truly, as we suggested above, you might not see a funnier English period piece set within the Queen’s court. The Favourite is still playing at a theater near you.

If you can trace back the origins of the ongoing saga between Conan O’Brien and his associate producer (with various duties) Jordan Schlansky, they had a dinner at a lovely Italian restaurant in NYC. Of course, Conan spent the whole dinner ripping into the stone-faced and emotionless Jordan and thus their dysfunctional on-screen relationship was born.

Since then, Conan has invaded Jordan’s office, tracked when he gets to work, toured Italy with him, and more all to the delight of Team Coco fans.

For Conan’s recent trip to Japan, Conan and Jordan return to classic form, though, after all these years, Jordan might show just a bit of emotion. Please watch and enjoy here.

Comedy Central Orders Eponymous Awkwafina Project and Robbie Starring and Co-Written by Rory Scovel to Series

This pair of series orders for Awkwafina and Robbie at Comedy Central puts a smile on our faces over here at the Bureau.

Awkwafina continues Akwafina’s hot streak from Ocean’s 8, Crazy Rich Asians, and SNL to having her very own sitcom based on her salad days in Brooklyn. Robbie (co-written by Anthony King) also puts the amazing Rory Scovel in a role that we’ve already imagined him doing so well, a highly pressured youth basketball league coach. That’s probably because we’ve seen him riff out a hilarious half time speech on stage at least a few times.

Also, we’re pretty psyched for supporting roles from BD Wong and Beau Bridges in each show respectively.

We’ll be waiting as patiently as we can for their trailers to get that first taste of what’s to come.

My Favorite Murder’s Podcast Network Exactly Right Launches Today

It was less than three years ago that Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark enjoyed each other’s company in recounting infamous murders and releasing it as a podcast known as My Favorite Murder.

Now, having toured the globe and created a gigantic self-sustaining community of murderinos, Karen and Georgia have launched their very own podcast network with a handful of podcasts. Comedy podcasts Do You Need a Ride? where Karen and Chris Fairbanks interview comedians while going to or coming from the airport and The Purrrcast where many comedians get to dish about their cats will be under the Exactly Right banner.

We’re sure this is only the tip of the iceberg for Exactly Right, so you might want to start following them.

James Adomian Voices Elon Musk  in an Entire Parody Audiobook About Elon Musk’s Vision of the Future Perfectly Titled “Welcome to the Future Which Is Mine” by Scott Dikkers

The age old maxim “You can’t make an omelette without cracking a few eggs,” seems to be taken to another level by technological entrepreneur and innovator Elon Musk. With failed launches of rockets, selling pre-orders for flamethrowers seemingly out of nowhere, and launching, of all things, one of his own cars into space, it would seem that there are a lot to questions to ask of someone who many see as a savior of the future.

This is where the brilliant politically satire from Scott Dikkers, one of the founders of The Onion, and James Adomian comes in. Adomian in a spot on impression of Musk guides us through an entire audiobook Welcome to the Future Which Is Mine that sends up what Musk’s vision of the future and what it really might end up being. Here’s a delightful taste of it.

Don’t be surprised to see if this ends up being Adomian’s next character he goes around the country playing (he already did it at SXSW earlier this year).

If you’re into it, you can get Welcome to the Future Which Is Mine by Not Elon Musk off of Amazon here: amzn.to/2PHtl5b.

There is a certain, great innocence that Nore Davis has a knack for preserving with his hysterical insights into the troubling world around him. It’s kind of a rare feat to pull off in comedy, especially to do so without sounding overly self-righteous or preachy.

On his third album Too Woke!, Nore maximizes this talent of commenting on such hot button issues nuances of race, gender, class, and sexuality all while being still very much on point with his punchlines, tags, and delivery. Nore himself is also a joy to listen to as his voice is so animated in so many particularly splendid ways.
