We could be at the precipice of a new distribution model for independent film at this very moment.

David Cross’ Hits, which successfully crowdfunded the money necessary for a completely independent release, hits theaters in over 40 different cities across the country today. The release will roll out in even more cities over the next month.

Also, the Pay-What-You-Want option through BitTorrent and VHX will start tomorrow, but there’s pre-order if you want to digitally ensure your place in line to get a copy.

Finally, you can mark this occasion if you’re in LA by going to a special screening at Sundance Sunset Cinemas at 7:30PM with some of the cast including Matt Walsh, David Koechner, James Adomian, Erinn Hayes, and Jessie Ennis live in person for a Q&A.

New Line Setting to Remake New Zealand Horror Comedy “Housebound”

Today is a good day for the genre of New Zealand Horror Comedy. Not only is Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s What We Do In The Shadows going to see more U.S. screens, but another film in the same niche, Gerard Johnstone’s Housebound is going to get an American remake via New Line.

Housebound follows a firebrand teenage girl being forced back into a family home that is possessed, but, being a rebel, she isn’t putting up with any fuss from demons/spirits.

No writer, cast, or director is set yet, but something that sounds like Attack The Block meets Amityville Horror hailing from NZ is a movie that we’re definitely up for.

“Walking The Room” Is Coming Back at MICF

Beloved podcast Walking The Room with Greg Behrendt and Dave Anthony did end after an extended hiatus last year. Since then, Greg and Dave have been busy with their own great projects such as I Am King Sweater and The Dollop, respectively.

However, Walking The Room seems to not be dead as there will be a live recording at The Melbourne International Comedy Festival on Apr. 2nd and the magic dynamic of Greg and Dave will once again see a stage and microphones. Both of them will also be having solo shows while at MICF and The Sydney Comedy Festival.

Knowing how loyal podcast fans are, we wouldn’t be surprised at all if someone flew from the U.S. to just see this.

Conan O’Brien Visits Korean Spa With Steven Yeun For Latest Remote Segment

It almost seems that will all the remote segments Conan O’Brien has done over the years visiting such niche things as an American Girl Doll Store, Taco Bell HQ, a commercial audition teacher, and more that he would have made a trip with cameras to a Korean spa by now.

Well, yesterday was our lucky day as Conan did take that trip as a remote segment and brought along The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun as well. It’s possible that Conan felt more awkward here than when he did that naked bit with Chelsea Handler.

Enjoy.

“What We Do In The Shadows” Met Its Kickstarter Goal and Will Be Playing in More U.S. Cities

A few days ago we posted the Kickstarter campaign for Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s What We Do In The Shadows to expand its U.S. release.

With only 5 hours to go before the campaign ends, they have exceeded their goal of $400K by raising $433,848. So, that means several cities throughout the country will get the benefit of seeing their vampire mockumentary that’s getting critical acclaim left and right.

Which cities and when it will come to said cities have yet to be all announced, but we will keep you updated.

So, along with David Cross’ Hits, score two for Kickstarter funded independent film releases in 2015.

TJ Miller Hosted The Crunchie Awards And It Was, Of Course, One Crunchie Awards To Never Forget

When making public appearances or hosting anything, TJ Miller is always one to go for the hilarity of the spectacle. Miller has made himself a legend on morning talk shows, filled in wonderfully for Chelsea Handler on Chelsea Lately, had a “meltdown” when guest hosting The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail, and more.

So, it shouldn’t surprise you that TJ did some sharp crowd work at an awards ceremony and really got some nice roast jokes in on an almost all Silicon Valley (the real one) crowd as the host of Tech Crunch’s Crunchie Awards.

After all of this, you should definitely be looking to hire TJ Miller for your next high profile event whether your high profile event can handle it or not.

It’s the moment that so many of you have been waiting for. The 2nd season of The Meltdown with Jonah & Kumail is getting under way and will be shooting near the end of March and going through April. Of course, the line-up has yet to be announced and, if it was anything like their first season, they’ll try to keep it as under wraps as they can.

Specifically, there will be tapings on Mar. 25th, 27th, Apr. 1st, and 4th. Unfortunately, all the tickets for all those tapings have been reserved, but, fret not, as there will be a waitlist for 8 shows. Make sure to follow @meltdown_show for more updates in that regard.

Ben Stiller Bringing “Super Sad True Love Story” Adaptation to Series For Media Rights Capital

Ben Stiller is still juggling all his hats as Zoolander 2 is on the horizon and he’s now working on a series for Media Rights Capital adapted from Gary Shteyngart’s novel Super Sad True Love Story.

It’ll be an hour long dramedy despite the title suggesting more of something satiric like David Wain’s They Came Together. Whatever the tone actually ends up being, we’ll be more likely to see it as MRC has ordered the series before getting a network on board.

Amy Schumer is putting her own stamp on the romantic comedy genre as the writer and star of Trainwreck. With Judd Apatow directing as well as Bill Hader, Vanessa Bayer, and LeBron James co-starring (as well as some nice cameos from Colin Quinn, Dave Attell, and Tilda Swinton), Schumer definitely is going to bring hew own raunchier persona to the normal genre tropes. It’s scheduled for release on July 17th and has the potential to be a hit R-rated comedy of the summer.

See for yourself in the red band trailer for Trainwreck.

Dern’s collection of essays “In Case of Fire, Use Stairs: And Other Plans That Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time” is set to come out in 2016 leaving us all plenty of time to figure alternate methods besides elevators and stairs to get from one floor to another in the event of a fire.

Help Barbara Holm Make Her Graphic Novel “The Adventures of Mon Ster”

Barbara Holm, who has made our 100 Best Things in Comedy We Were Witness To In No Particular Order list in years past, is now making her own comedic sci-fi graphic novel delightfully titled “The Adventures of Mon Ster”. Barbara explains in more detail here.

She’s looking to crowdfund the project to make it all happen. Holm has reached her initial goal of $1000 by next month, but more funds could make Mon Ster’s adventures even better.

As an added incentive on top of Kickstarter rewards, Barbara is willing to do more for your donations. In her own words:

“If I get to $1500 I will dress up like an X-Men and walk around downtown handing out pamphlets and say "Have you accepted the X-Men as your savior?” Like a scientologist, and I’ll film it and put it online. If I get to $1800 I will make a Hump style video with my action figures and put it online. If I get to $2000 I will film a parody of Taylor Swift’s Shake it Off but make it all about X-Men.“

So, let’s make sure Barbara gets $2K by Mar. 10th, OK?

Jon Stewart Officially Announces His Retirement, Sometime This Year, From The Daily Show

Uncategorized
announcement, exit, jon stewart, the daily show

It was announced via press release yesterday and word of mouth that Jon Stewart will retire from The Daily Show at some point this year.

Jon made his official announcement and the beginning of a long, sincere goodbye at the end of last night’s Daily Show. He offered some comforting words for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart-faithful that have followed him for the last 17 years including “I’m not going anywhere tomorrow,” and, “This show doesn’t deserve an even slightly restless host and neither do you.”

He also said that he’s unsure of an exact timeline and only giving the months of July, September, or December as potential months when he might leave. Obviously, Comedy Central would want him to stick around as long as possible and get more time to find a replacement, transition them into being a host, and promote them as much as they can as to minimize drop off, if any, in The Daily Show’s viewership.

Even though they don’t compete against The Late Show or The Late Late Show in time slot, it should be noted in regards to figuring out when Stewart might end his rn that David Letterman’s exit comes in May, Colbert comes in September, and James Corden takes over The Late Late Show next month.

Jon Stewart Set to Leave “The Daily Show” Later This Year

February 11, 2015
Uncategorized

Comedy Central just sent out this press release out that the Jon Stewart who has arguably been one of their biggest stars is leaving his post at the The Daily Show later this year. His departure will come after years of delivering such a great satiric angle on the news that other pundits at actual news programs would reference his take on the news as a talking point as well as fostering The Colbert Report and The Nightly Show.

Of course, this leaves The Daily Show desk vacant and The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore in unsure territory with their lead-in. Had this been a year or two earlier, maybe the desk would have gone to Stephen Colbert or John Oliver, but now, a name doesn’t immediately come to mind fill in Stewart’s giant shoes. Also, bumping Larry Wilmore later this year would seem very unorthodox and unlikely, though weirder things have happened in the world of late night.

However, Comedy Central has another chance to continue their streak of bold, groundbreaking programming over the last few years. While the chances of hiring another great, established white male comedian, someone like Norm MacDonald perhaps, are high, Comedy Central would definitely have an audience rallying behind them if they went a different direction and hired someone who wasn’t another white guy like Fallon, Kimmel, Conan, Corden, Hardwick, Meyers, and most of the recent fill-in hosts of The Late Late Show.

The bigger issue here is finding someone that Stewart’s fans can get behind that is somehow free or can free themselves up to take on the year round commitment of The Daily Show. While it would be perhaps great if Tina Fey and Amy Poehler could co-host like they did in the great three-year run at The Golden Globes or like they did at SNL’s Weekend Update, they both have overall deals, star in a multitude of projects amongst a whole other multitude of things they take on.

So, for now, we’ll be reminiscing about our favorite Jon Stewart moments over the years.

Not only are we going to get to see America’s favorite “pop culture inquisitor” Billy Eichner return to the streets for a fourth season to question any and all, famous or not about his personal pop culture obsessions, but we’ll get two different networks to watch it on.

Eichner and company are moving from Fuse to both truTV and TBS in their fourth season as well, perhaps, going somewhere else (Billy is taking suggestions) besides various parts of NYC.

So, all of America needs to prep their knowledge on Meryl Streep for later this year.

Perhaps this is an Adult Swim infomercial that we weren’t awake for over the last week or so, but Adult Swim’s FishCenter Live claims to be “…the world’s only LIVE marine-themed, call-in show. Streaming every weekday at 4PM [EST] (continuous replays start at 7P) at fishcenter.com.”

If you’re asking yourself if this is a sports show that covers sports made up by humans formatted around fish just swimming randomly around a fish tank, then ask yourself no more questions. That’s exactly what it is and when you start watching it, you’ll find, while giggling the whole way through, that you do get sort of invested in the individual fish.

Get an extended preview of it here and then supposedly stream it here weekdays at 4.
