BitTorrent’s New Discovery Fund Is Offering $2500-$100K to Artists for Marketing and Distribution

BitTorrent’s New Discovery Fund Is Offering $2500-$100K to Artists for Marketing and Distribution

If you know how the entertainment biz works, you might be well aware that one of the major elements that keeps something ‘indie’ as opposed to ‘mainstream’ is a budget for marketing and distribution. Often times, indie comedies that get lauded over and over at film festivals will have limited runs in art house cinemas around the country, but would rarely, if ever, find their way to your local multiplex simply because there is no budget to reach further with the movie.

BitTorrent is looking to turn the tides in this regard with their newly launched Discovery Fund initiative that is empowering artists to be able to reach further than their limited resources of favors and grassroots campaigning can afford them.

Based on the scope of the project and if they’re into it, they’ll offer up $2500-$100,000 to boost the marketing and distribution of an artist’s work with the artist maintaining the rights to the work itself.

This includes anyone who can fit under the description of “awesome storytellers and outside voices”, which is well within the umbrella of comedy.

Sounds pretty good, right?

We could be at the precipice of a new distribution model for independent film at this very moment.

David Cross’ Hits, which successfully crowdfunded the money necessary for a completely independent release, hits theaters in over 40 different cities across the country today. The release will roll out in even more cities over the next month.

Also, the Pay-What-You-Want option through BitTorrent and VHX will start tomorrow, but there’s pre-order if you want to digitally ensure your place in line to get a copy.

Finally, you can mark this occasion if you’re in LA by going to a special screening at Sundance Sunset Cinemas at 7:30PM with some of the cast including Matt Walsh, David Koechner, James Adomian, Erinn Hayes, and Jessie Ennis live in person for a Q&A.

Help David Cross Truly Independently Release “Hits” in Theaters and as Pay-What-You-Want (Oh, A “Mr. Show” Reunion Is Also Really Happening)

In lieu of a traditional indie film release, David Cross is taking cues from Radiohead and Louis C.K. in order to get his film Hits to fans more directly.

Cross wants to play Hits it in select cities across the country as well as on BitTorrent for a Pay-What-You-Want and also a release on iTunes, etc. To do this, he’s going looking to raise $100K on Kickstarter to do this all on his own and the more money that’s raised, the more cities they can visit.

As you’d expect there are some great rewards for helping crowdfund this experimental film release of David Cross’ Hits. One of them is being in the background of a Mr. Show reunion.

That’s right, Paul F. Tompkins wasn’t deceiving us when he tweeted out this picture on New Year’s Eve and a reunion of David, Bob, Jay Johnston. Scott Aukerman, Paul, and more is indeed happening this year.

Eight men out… of the 1990s. Maybe something new coming from the Mr. Show gang in the new year? #MrShow pic.twitter.com/gBy8CQ49nv

With all of that said, get in on all of this.
