The Onion Expands Its Satirical Universe with TMZ Parody “Starwipe”

September 21, 2015
Uncategorized
parody, starwipe, the onion, tmz

“The website’s name is StarWipe. And no matter how fervently celebrities may pretend otherwise, it exists. It exists, and it will write articles making fun of the beautiful, idolized rich for an audience of readers who should probably be working right now, in a way that will make that audience maybe smirk and feel slightly superior for a few, fleeting seconds. And those celebrities can’t really do anything about it, besides not saying or doing dumb things.”

The Onion has already solidified its expansion of the large scale institutions that they parody. The Onion itself parodies newspapers, Clickhole takes on content aggregators, and their latest endeavor, Starwipe takes on entertainment obsessed journalism like TMZ.

While the satire of The Onion still goes over the heads of some folks and Clickhole gets so close to the real thing that one of their writers got brought over to Buzzfeed, it seems Starwipe is making no cover up of their contempt of how entertainment journalism is carried out these days.

A quick perusal of their site will show headlines like “Kate Upton Nearly Avoids Wardrobe Malfunction, Saves Herself Humilation and Us From Lack of Free Will” and “Baby Bump Watch: George Clooney” are good examples of this.

You can peruse more of Starwipe here, then follow them on FB and Twitter here and here

Watch Trailer for Sebastián Silva’s Surrogate Dramedy “Nasty Baby” with Kristen Wiig

As far as we can tell, Kristen Wiig is going to keep her post SNL streak of striking dramedy like Welcome to Alice and The Skeleton Twins going.

Her latest role is in Sebastián Silva’s Nasty Baby following the tribulations of a gay couple played by writer/director Silva and Tunde Adebimpe trying to have a baby via surrogate and bringing one of their best female friends in for the job.

From the looks of this trailer, if you dig Transparent, you might enjoy Nasty Baby.

Look for its release on Oct. 23rd.

Here’s More Alternate Universe TV from “Rick and Morty”

While certainly boundaries are being pushed in TV right now, TV is really being pushed in tone, content, logic, etc. in alternate universes from Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty.

Alternate universe cable TV was one of our favorite parts of season 1 and we’re glad to see it’s made it back into season 2 into the form of Jan Quadrant Vincent 16 and a disturbing restaurant ad for Lil’ Bits.

Rather than typical, designated holiday episodes, this alternate universe TV in an already crazy, animated universe could be a way better tradition at Rick and Morty.

Full list of Primetime Emmys winners here.

Three of the most talked about comedies series of the year got their due at The Emmys last night as Jon Stewart has ended his Daily Show run with an Emmys sweep for talk/variety series, Transparent got honors for Jeffrey Tambor and series creator Jill Soloway, and Veep received its rightful due as a truly outstanding comedy series with four Emmys.

Even more notable than that, only one broadcast network sitcom, CBS’ Mom, got an Emmy. Everything else is highly touted cable shows like Veep, Inside Amy Schumer or shows on streaming networks like Amazon. If there was ever a sign of the times of TV as far as comedy is concerned, take a gander at this list of winners again.

Watch a Trailer for “Adam Ruins Everything” Coming to TruTV from College Humor

Adam Conover has ruffled enough of the right feathers with his web series Adam Ruins Everything on College Humor that it’s getting a full fledged TV version.

Get a look at what you’ll be slightly more informed about or, depending on how precious you hold certain notions, get what things you were just taking for granted get delightfully ruined by Adam in this trailer.

Look for the premiere of Adam Ruins Everything on Tues. Sept. 29th at 10PM on TruTv.

Ron Funches is so dominant on @midnight that the show is pitting him to go through a gauntlet week to see if he can remain victorious throughout. We have no doubt that he’ll put his unstoppable charm on display for any and all challengers.

This Bunches of Week starts this week, which you should note as The Daily Show with Trevor Noah still hasn’t premiered yet, airs at 11PM on Comedy Central.

Please Watch and Enjoy Season 2 of Post-Apocalyptic Buddy Comedy “New Timers”

September 20, 2015
Uncategorized

While it’s almost been a year since the world ended in the universe of Matt Porter and Charlie Hankin’s Comedy Central web series New Timers, it’s been far too long in the real world since we’ve got the charming, low-key foibles of Matt and Charlie after their world fictionally ends.

Luckily, there’s a whole season 2 of New Timers that was posted entirely at Comedy Central and you should go watch it right now.

We’re guessing that if the world ended and you survived, some of you, if not a lot of you would end up doing something like this on day 326…

…and this on day 329…

…and this on day 334…

…and this on day 338…

…and this on day 342…

…and maybe even this on day 349/end of season 2.

Many of you are set for a day of football that you hope won’t be too distracted by The Emmys.

However, that doesn’t mean that you should shun a meeting of non-sports TV and televised sports like this remote segment of Late Late Show host and recent UK transplant James Corden giving American football a try and even going so far as to make a field goal attempt at a real Raiders game.

Watch his journey and if he succeeds here.

Steve Rannazzisi’s “Breaking Dad” Will Air as Scheduled on Comedy Central

September 20, 2015
Uncategorized

(via Deadline)

Looks like Buffalo Wild Wings and Comedy Central have taken different approaches to handling this week’s Steve Rannazzisi debacle.

Despite getting a lot of heat for his admission that his 9/11 escape story was a lie, Steve Rannazzisi’s apologies seem to have been enough to keep his new hour special, Breaking Dad, from being pre-empted, moved, etc. at Comedy Central.

Its premiere is set for 11PM tonight on Comedy Central and we’re sure that some folks will be probably trying to fact check every single bit.

Seeing how all this spun out of control years after the lie was told, it would be thoroughly intriguing now to see Steve be interviewed Brian Williams on his new show if they went in-depth into their fabrications.

Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein to Bring “Portlandia” to a Close as a Series After Season 8

However, they’re open to other things outside of a series.

In a recent interview during the shooting of season 6, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein revealed that the 8th season of Portlandia that IFC has ordered will be its last.

A movie, musical, or some sort of one off could be possible, but don’t fret about the exit of the show yet. Season 6 is in production and seasons 7 and 8 have yet to be even conceived of.

Still, we’re sure they’ll start thinking of some great collector box set that comes with plenty of birds to put wherever you want.

The prodigal network’s comedy line-up seems to be returning to Tina Fey, Mike Schur, and now Amy Poehler.

NBC’s latest addition to their comedy development slate comes from Charlie Grady about a reluctant prince that gets thrust into power and having life thrown out of order. Amy Poehler is on board as an executive producer along with her Paper Kite Productions.

With Poehler, Fey, and Mike Schur all having shows in various very committed stages at NBC, one can’t help but think of that magical time when 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation headlined their comedy line-up.

If you haven’t committed the name Jermaine Fowler to memory yet, you’ll end up doing that soon with what he has in the works.

Not that it’s a surprise to us, but Jermaine Fowler has got a lot of great irons in great fires.

An hour comedy special, Jermaine Fowler: Give ‘Em Hell Kid, that mixes stand-up and interviews with family and friends is coming to Showtime in mid December. On top of that, Jermaine is developing a semi-autobiographical multi-cam sitcom following his very young parents trying to raise him and the rest of his family.

We are excited to announce that @amyschumer will be honored at this year’s #Britannias! pic.twitter.com/YJ0tRtNfEQ

It’s already been a banner year for Schumer and we guess we have to make that banner a little bit bigger.

Amy Schumer is set to join the esteemed group of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sacha Baron Cohen, Matt Stone & Trey Parker, Ben Stiller, and Betty White for winning the British Academy for Film and Television Awards/BAFTA’s Charlie Chaplin Award for Excellence in Comedy.

We’ll be curious to see what Amy has in store for 2016 that might possibly top her 2015.

Leave it to a show on a niche cable network having celebrities, many who are comedians, to fight for climate change awareness.

Years of Living Dangerously, a show covering the reality of climate change, on the National Geographic Channel just got picked up for a second season and is really going for it in terms of their guests this time around.

So far, they’ve got David Letterman, Ty Burrell, Jack Black, Cecily Strong, Don Cheadle, Olivia Munn, Ian Somerhalder, James Cameron, and Arnold Schwarzenegger on board for the show in some aspect or another.

Letterman will specifically be interviewing the Prime Minister of India.

Hopefully, this show will present climate change in an entertaining way that isn’t just laughing at certain presidential candidates that seem like they’re spouting off nonsense.
