There’s Going to Be an Indie Dramedy Inspired by David Foster Wallace’s “A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again” Starring Bill Hader

November 18, 2015

Could you be more full of indie film buzzwords?

David Foster Wallace’s story “A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again” following a father and son on a cruise bonding on several levels with has inspired a feature length film that will star Bill Hader with Me and Earl and the Dying Girl writer Jesse Andrews’ directorial debut.

Called “The Empress of Serenity”, we’re pretty sure that, if everything goes well, this is the sort of movie that will dominate the festival circuit and make it into limited release sooner rather than later.

Richard Linklater’s New Comedy “Everybody Wants Some” to Open SXSW

(via Deadline)

While there was the Gamergate influenced panel debacle, at least SXSW is kicking off the festivities with something big.

Everybody Wants Some, which has been touted as a spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused, will premiere at the very opening of SXSW. Linklater is going back to the 80s in, fittingly for the festival, Austin, TX and following a college baseball team dealing with growing up.

If ever there’s a director that could make such a premise something amazing, it’ll be Linklater. If you want to catch the premiere at SXSW, free up your March.

Stephen Colbert Proves He’s a Worthy Successor to David Letterman in His Interview with Bill Maher

November 18, 2015
Uncategorized
bill maher, david letterman, stephen colbert, the late show

David Letterman always distinguished himself with his era of The Late Show  from the rest of the late night talk show landscape by interviews being allowed to get testy if the conversation found its way there. Dave wouldn’t back down and usually have the upper hand with anyone who sat across his desk.

Now, with Stephen Colbert at the helm of The Late Show, Stephen not only invites a dance in his conversation that can switch between sharp quips to pure sincerity on a dime, but invites intellectual and/or challenging guests on a more regular basis than almost anyone else on a late night right now. Stephen seems to pull off tight rope walking in his interviews quite well by making the conversation engaging, playfully jabbing them, and seemingly not even breaking a sweat if things get heated.

Not that any of you really doubted Stephen Colbert would be a great heir to The Late Show legacy, but you can now see it for yourself.

Watch Colbert put all of this on display as he chats with Bill Maher about Trump and being Catholic all while keeping the laughs coming.

This Trailer for “Zoolander 2″ By Itself Is Worth The 14 Year Wait

November 18, 2015
Uncategorized

Zoolander came out 2001 and was so damn funny.

Then, over a decade passed before there were serious whispers of a sequel coming about.

Finally, it will have been 15 years later when the sequel comes out on Feb. 12th, 2016.

We only had to wait 14 years for the trailer, that was just posted this morning, and it is seems to pick up where the original movie left off with how hysterical it is. There’s an unbelievable turn by Benedict Cumberbatch and perhaps Justin Bieber’s most redeeming role in a movie yet, not to mention what’s done to Kristen Wiig and, well, we’ll just stop talking and let you enjoy it already.

Watch Conan’s Trip to an Armenian Marketplace Before “Conan in Armenia” Premieres Tonight

As you all well know by Conan O’Brien’s remote segments, Conan can take the most tepid of places and make it as full of tomfoolery just by himself.

The addition of his assistant Sona Movsesian who is trying to not be too embarrassed in the Conan in Armenia special that premieres tonight (11PM on TBS) only make Conan’s clowning around all the more apparent and joyful.

Just see what he does by going into a very tranquil Armenian market place.

Get a Look at the Intense Board Game that Brent Weinbach Plays “Outside Comedy”

November 17, 2015

Brent Weinbach has one of the most innovative minds in comedy. His absurdist comedy is often seen by audiences without precedent and we have yet to see it not kill.

What keeps a mind like Brent’s occupied during his off duty hours? Thomas R. Wood’s Outside Comedy explores Brent’s hobby of playing one of the more suspense-laced board games around, The Resistance.

It only makes sense that someone who makes a point of never breaking on stage likes playing a game that heavily involves how good you are at lying.

Rhea Butcher To Be First Correspondent on “No, You Shut Up! with Paul F. Tompkins”

Uncategorized
fusion, no you shut up, paul f tompkins, rhea butcher

Take note that Rhea will appear on the show in human form as opposed to all the other regular puppet pundits.

As No, You Shut Up! continues to delightfully evolve as a show, it has found itself bringing another non-felt being alongside host Paul F. Tompkins. The very funny Rhea Butcher, who we hope you know from Put Your Hands Together and her own stand-up, will be the very first NYSU correspondent.

Paul announced it during his interview on his former show Speakeasy while chatting with new host Russell Peters.

With Tompkins and Butcher, which we think has a very nice ring to it, season 4 of No, You Shut Up! coming next year should be a barnburner.

Martin Short, Maria Bamford, Ron Funches, and James Adomian are just the tip of the tip of the iceberg in next year’s Moontower Comedy & Oddity Festival, taking place from Apr. 20th-23rd.

The tip of that line-up includes:

Ahmed Bharoocha
Joe DeRosa
Debra DiGiovanni
Sean Donnelly
Jo Firestone
Goddamn Comedy Jam
Anjelah Johnson
Jesse Joyce
Andy Kindler
The Lampshades
Matteo Lane
Annie Lederman
Joe List
Josh Adam Meyers
Jim Norton
Johnny Pemberton
Piff the Magic Dragon
Tony Rock
Jon Rudnitsky
Sklar Brothers
Kevin Smith
Beth Stelling
Brad Williams
Jenny Zigrino

Apparently, that’s just for starters for this annual Austin, TX comedy festival meaning that there’s way more to be announced, hopefully soon.

You can get early bird passes ranging from $99-$499 right now and we’re going to guess that they’re not going to be around for long.

Adult Swim Orders “Dream Corp, LLC” to Series

Looks like rotoscoping is making a come back at Adult Swim.

The latest series that’s is now on Adult Swim’s docket is a workplace comedy set in a dream analyzation office where things are not so, pardon our pun, dreamy. We’re guessing that’s it’ll probably echo the offices of Lacuna, Inc. from Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind.

John Krasinki and Stephen Merchant are attached to executive produce and  award winning short film director Daniel Stessen.

The whole series will be rotoscoped, a la A Scanner Darkly, which will not only accentuate the focus on people’s dreams, but break new ground for Adult Swim.

The Return of MST3K Is Officially Funded and Jonah Ray Will Be Its New Host

November 17, 2015
Uncategorized
joel hodgson, jonah ray, kickstarter, mst3k, mystery science theater 3000

Yep, this all makes sense to us.

Only a few days after Mystery Science Theater 3000 creator Joel Hodgson announced a Kickstarter campaign to bring back MST3K, the $2 million goal to make 3 brand new episodes of the show has been reached.

With thousands of dollars pouring in literally by the minute, reaching the original goal was inevitable. Now, with 25 days left on the campaign, the stretch goal of $5.5 million for 12 new episodes of MST3K seems very attainable.

The other bit of great MST3K news should even make it seem more enticing to have more and more new feature length episodes.

Announced this morning, Jonah Ray will be the new host of the new MST3K, complete with jumpsuit and all. This is a pretty fitting choice given that Jonah’s a huge MST3K fan as well as having the hosting thing down per Nerdist podcasts and The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail.

So, knowing all of that, please keep contributing to the campaign as much as possible to make this new season of MST3K as big as possible.

Drennon Davis and Karen Kilgariff’s First Album as a Duo “I Don’t Care, I Like It” Coming Out This Week

If you’re in the comedy know, you’re probably more than familiar with the incredible musical comedic talents of Drennon Davis and Karen Kilgariff. If not, you should catch up here and here.

Now, you should know that the two of them together, along with their refreshing angle on musical comedy, is as close as we’ve gotten to a musical comedy supergroup in recent memory. Their first album together I Don’t Care, I Like It really puts their abstract playfulness paired with their impressive musical chops wonderfully on display from GPS voices done by rockstars to a love song for Godzilla and more.

Get a taste of their songs “You’re Gone Be Fine (High Song)” and “Tattoos” and you’ll understand what we’re saying.

I Don’t Care, I Like It comes out this Fri. Nov. 20th off or AST Records, but you can pre-order it on iTunes right now, right here.

Jeff Ross’ Latest Roast Jokes Will Be Going in The Film “The Comedian” Starring Robert De Niro and Jennifer Aniston

We don’t know when the next Comedy Central roast is, so look forward to your next batch of burns from the Roastmaster General in this film.

The Comedian will follow Robert De Niro as a Don Rickles-seque comedian that becomes close with a woman played by Jennifer Aniston. There will be enough sections of actual roasting/stand-up, that the producers have brought on none other than Jeff Ross (which makes us wonder why the lead role isn’t described as a Jeff Ross type of comedian) to write jokes for De Niro to tell.

Not that anyone calls into question the authenticity of roast jokes in a narrative fiction film, but there definitely should be no doubt in this case. Also, they should be pretty damn good jokes.

The story of firebrand comedian turned activist, and an effective one at that, Barry Crimmins gets deftly told by Bobcat in his documentary Call Me Lucky.

Conan’s Conan in Armenia special premieres tomorrow at 11PM on TBS and from the looks of this trailer, Conan O’Brien took in as much of Armenia as he could with his Armenian assistant Sona Movsesian.

Sheep herding, exotic foods, a sobering visit to the Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex, and more are all parts of this latest special remote episode of Conan that you shouldn’t miss.

John Oliver Remarks on The ISIS Paris Attacks Is the Profanity Laced Rally We All Needed

While it’s not part of the long segment that’s normally posted to the Last Week Tonight YouTube channel, it’s a rare moment in TV where a well spoken, intelligent, respected voice in media and comedy gets to unleash as much justified, uncensored fury as he can muster.

Most TV programs, when addressing tragedies, do so by a moment of silence or a simple, short message of support.

John Oliver, however, decided to go much a different route thanks to HBO’s anything goes M.O. Let’s just say that during the opening of the show, Oliver taps into that NSFW voice in us all.

There’s a clip (that might get taken down) here as well as a transcript on Deadline.

Watch Full Trailer for Bill Burr’s “F is for Family”, a No Holds Barred Look Back at the Nuclear Family in 1973

Uncategorized

The sitcoms of the 70s had much more censors to deal with that we do today. Thus, the more accurate portrayals of dysfunctional sitcom families that we get on television today really wouldn’t have happened back then.

That’s where Bill Burr’s animated Netflix series F is For Family comes in as an animated version of what a family of four at odds with each other in 1973 was like. From the looks of this trailer, Bill is going to show 1973 how it really was, no matter how misguided it may have been.

F is for Family starts streaming on Netflix on Dec. 18th.

If you haven’t familiarized yourself with great comedians and human beings Cameron Esposito and Rhea Butcher yet, please do so.

The latest series to come from Amy Poehler’s digital brand Smart Girls comes from Cameron and Rhea having a conversation where they offer their eye-opening, but inviting female perspective on life.

It’s called She Said, which we can only hope will offer a different, more progressive angle on that decades old “that’s what she said” joke.

By the way, it premieres tomorrow Smart Girls just in case you’re getting to excited over this.

The great Sara Benincasa has her latest novel, D.C. Trip, now in stores. In addition to her branching out quite well as an author from being an accomplished storyteller and comedian, Sara is now branching out a little more as she is adapting this story of a rookie youngster HS teacher taking his students to our nation’s capitol.

Given Sara’s style of storytelling, we’ll be excited to see what she comes up with as a feature based on this book.

So, knowing all that you can and should get D.C. Trip before it becomes a major motion picture so you can, at the very least, brag about comparing the book and the movie.
