Please Enjoy Trailer for Supernatural Comedy “Extra Ordinary” Where Will Forte Gets to Be a Rock Star Who Sold His Soul to the Devil

Please Enjoy Trailer for Supernatural Comedy “Extra Ordinary” Where Will Forte Gets to Be a Rock Star Who Sold His Soul to the Devil

Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman’s Extra Ordinary looks like a whole lot of fun as a comedy about the paranormal in a small Irish town that’s just trying to get on with their lives, specifically the leads Maeve Higgins and Barry Ward. The tone, look, and feel almost make it as though it could inhabit the same cinematic universe as What We Do In the Shadows.

On top of that, Will Forte gets to don a mustache and play a villainous rock star who sells his soul to regain his former glory (and seemingly accompanied by the hysterical Claudia O’Doherty). Just seeing that from the trailer alone has us pretty on board.

See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for Extra Ordinary to start rolling into theaters Sept. 27th.

Taika Waititi’s Next Film to Be an American Samoa Soccer Movie ‘Next Goal Wins’

No matter the genre, it seems as though Taika Waititi manages to put his stamp of offbeat humor and heart into everything he does. Hunt for the Wilderpeople to Thor: Ragnarok to the very intriguing, upcoming JoJo Rabbit showcases quite the range while still being Waititi.

So, with that said, we’re definitely on board with the idea that he’s doing an inspirational sports movie about an American Samoa soccer team transforming from losers to winners based on a documentary from a few years ago of the same name, Next Goal Wins.

In fact, this might just be the default movie that plays during school when there’s a sub or something (taking place of The Sandlot or Remember the Titans).

Steve Coogan To Receive This Year’s Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy

For everything Alan Partridge and The Trip movies alone, Steve Coogan has done the world of comedy a great service and provided so many fans with endless quotable moments for years to come.

Thus, he is deserved getting this lifetime achievement in comedy at the Britannia Awards from BAFTA. Whether you’re unfamiliar or not with Partridge or The Trip, it’s always a good time to dive into that part of Coogan’s filmography.

Atlanta’s Getting a Fourth Season at FX

With the amount of ground that Donald Glover, Hiro Murai, and more have broken with three seasons of Atlanta, one has to wonder what is next for the critically acclaimed, genre/form defying Atlanta.

The possibilities for the series seem boundless, which is a thing that we’re glad for Glover to have, and, with its constant knack for reinvention, that it could just keep going if it chose to do so.

In any case, round of applause for a fourth season of Atlanta and keep a close eye out for a teaser.

Simon Pegg & Nick Frost’s Supernatural Comedy Series ‘Truth Seekers’ Will Launch Exclusively on Amazon

Perhaps the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy is getting a fourth “flavour”?

Indeed, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are teaming up once again like they did in Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End (i.e. the so-coined Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy) in Truth Seekers. Pegg and Frost will play ghost hunters that end up getting more than they bargained for with a paranormal investigation digital series.

If that’s the sort of flavor/flavour you’re looking for, look for this to come to Amazon Prime, premiere date TBA.

Fleabag Wins Both Individual and Outstanding Achievement in Comedy as Well as Program of the Year at TCA Awards

Many folks are saying that Season 2 of Fleabag is even a step up from the beloved first season. Certainly, this hat trick of wins at the Television Critics Association Awards from this weekend shows that feeling still holds true (Fleabag deserved more awards for its truly groundbreaking first season).

So, we’re all in agreement that Fleabag is a grand piece of television and that Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with her involvement in the next Bond movie, might just make James Bond franchise better than it has ever been? Yes? Perfect.

In fact, they’re airing past seasons right now on their comedy channel “Funny AF” here.

For those that forgot or the uninitiated, Bajillion parodied reality shows following real estate agents for high, high, high end properties with such a wonderful cast (Paul F. Tompkins, Drew Tarver, Tawny Newsome, Eugene Cordero, just to name a few).

Guy Branum Will Be Writing an Adaption of “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” for Quibi

1) If you haven’t been tracking what Jeffrey Katzenberg’s curious ad-supported, short form streaming service is up to, you might want to check in on that because they’re buying up a lot of very intriguing properties.

2) Comedian/writer Guy Branum doing anything is absolutely worth your time, but his version of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days might be a shot in the arm that rom coms need right now.

3) This adaptation also means that the zeitgeist can enjoy Morgan Murphy’s brilliant How To Lost a Guy in 10 Days joke once more.

‘Baskets’ Will Come to a Close at FX with Season 4

It looks like we will have gotten 4 seasons with the Baskets family and their journey down the clowning business rabbit hole. Galifiankis, Louie Anderson, and Martha Kelly have had some truly magical chemistry from the start and props to Jonathan Krisel being at the helm.

At least, there will be one more chance for Baskets to win some very well deserved Emmys.

The Punch Line Comedy Club in San Francisco Will Get to Stay Right Where It Is

The Punch Line, a San Francisco landmark and one of the continent’s best and most celebrated comedy clubs, was just granted a “Legacy Business” status and will indeed to keep their doors open just as they have been doing for decades in their current location.

For several weeks, their fate was up in the air as Google took over the building’s lease, prompting plenty of buzz and discussion online as well as press conferences that had Dave Chappelle speaking at them.

Now that they’ll get to stick around, make sure you make good on the Punch Line being a  “Legacy Business” and go catch some, if not several, shows there.

Big Mouth To Get 3 More Seasons at Netflix

BIG MOUTH HAS BEEN PICKED UP FOR 3 MORE SEASONS!!! Thank you to our writers, cast, crew, Netflix and everyone around the world who watches the show!

–@nickkroll

Announced today, the ultra honest, magical realism of Big Mouth will get to live on for quite some more time at Netflix. We’re looking forward to whatever Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett have up their sleeve, but we do wonder how far they’ll let all the characters (and their corresponding monsters) grow up.

Also, we’re sure Kroll will dazzle us all by voicing a dozen more characters at least.

‘Los Espookys’ Renewed For Season 2 By HBO

Though one highly imaginative comedy got cancelled today probably before it should have (Tuca & Bertie), another one, Los Espookys, got another season to live.

Fred Armisen, Julio Torres, and Ana Fabrega came up with some wildly different that we can only intensely wonder what they’ll shoot for in season two. In the meantime, dip your toe into the weird and cheeky waters of the first season Los Espookys.

Hulu’s Got a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Series in the Works

The beloved series of Douglas Adams novels known as the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy once got a feature film adaptation all the way back in 2005. After nearly 15 years, it looks the novels are due for another adaptation, though, this time, as a potential TV series via Hulu (which may be what’s best as opposed to trying to cram as much of the books into a feature length film).

This project is still in its early stages and we don’t know exactly what it’ll look like or even they’ll be tapping for their cast. However, it does seem like a good time for a comedy about having to leave earth.

Netflix Orders Astronomy Club Variety Sketch Series

The long running NYC based comedy group Astronomy Club will now be the latest sketch series on TV via Netflix, thanks to Kenya Barris. Barris struck a deal with Netflix to bring their sharp, yet silly sensibilities into a full-fledged series.

See Astronomy Club in action with one of the best sketches: A Meeting of Great Black Inventors.

Also, with this announcement that the world of sketch comedy on TV will be as diverse as it has ever been with Arturo Castro’s Alternatino, Robin Thede and Issa Rae’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, and now, Astronomy Club.

Taika Waititi to Direct ‘Thor 4’

We guess Thor 4 was inevitable, so we’re glad to hear that Taika Waititi will return to direct the follow-up to Thor: Ragnarok.

Now that Taika’s set, we’ll be curious to see what he keeps Thor somewhat like Big Lebowski’s The Dude as he was in Avengers: Endgame. Whatever he chooses, we’re sure it’ll be fun.

So, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach Will Write Warner Bros’ Barbie Movie

It’s rare that you’ll get an audible gasp-ish “What?!?” from us, but that’s definitely what happened when we read the headline for this annoucement.

The movie based on the landmark toy line, Barbie, has switched many hands over the last few years, but this is definitely both a far cry from when Amy Schumer was involved and the original toy itself.

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, who collaborated on some of the more celebrate indie comedies/dramedies in the last couple of decades (including Frances Ha and Mistress America), pose an interesting duo to take on a 2019, woke (which is what Warner Bros. is shooting for) Barbie movie. Baumbach isn’t an entire stranger to taking on big budget IP as he did pen Madagascar 3, but Gerwig and Baumbach together could potentially weave some magic here, not unlike Chris Miller and Phil Lord did with The LEGO Movie.

We hope that will be what happens here.

IMDB’s First Scripted Series to Be Animated Monster Therapy Comedy “You’re Not a Monster”

There’s a whole bevy of voice talent here including Kelsey Grammer, Eric Stonestreet, Patton Oswalt, Joel Kim Booster, Amber Ruffin, Aparna Nancherla, Langston Kerman, Ellie Kemper, and more, which should make for a very confident first step forward for IMDB’s foray into original, scripted content.

The premise for You’re Not a Monster (from Frank Lesser and Lily Stuart Streiff) that seems to be Dr. Katz with touches of Monsters Inc. also has peaked our interest. We’ll be very curious to see what comes from its first sneak peek at Comic Con coming up.

So, we guess, everything (keep in mind that IMDB does stand for International Movie Database) will be making original content that you just might want to watch? You do know Mailchimp just launched Mailchimp Presents, right?

John Turturro’s ‘Big Lebowski’ Spinoff ‘Jesus Rolls’ Set for Early 2020 Release

So, from the sounds of it, this will be Jesus Quintana’s own Lebowski-esque, quixotic tale.

We’re intrigued.

When Turturro has gotten behind the camera for the musical dark rom com Romance and Cigarettes, we’ve really enjoyed how much he swung for the fences. We hope that he does so again with Jesus Rolls. We’ll see if that happens in less than a year.

That being said, this is not being touted as a sequel, which has us curious about if The Dude will even make an appearance, though it’s definitely not a dealbreaker if he doesn’t.

After 67 Years, Mad Magazine Will Be Reduced to Best Ofs, and Special Editions

This week, it was announced that the seminal humor publication Mad Magazine will no longer be focusing on pushing out new issues, content, etc. later this year. There will be issues that feature old pieces (spanning over 3 scores of years) released by DC that aim for that nostalgia dollar, but you can see this as the final cap on an era of humor.

One has to wonder what lies ahead with the sort of comedic sensibilities that made Mad Magazine into a household name. Indie zines and indie comics have popped up here and there, but the Onion is effectively all digital now. Will there be anything like Mad Magazine again?

Our guess is probably not, which is probably why they’ll be doing best of collections of Mad Magazine in the years to come.

Silverlake Lounge Bought by Owners of Tabula Rasa; Promise to Keep Independent Spirit of the Place Alive

This curious dive bar that has been a crucial intersection of all sorts of scenes, generations, and more in Silverlake is getting a new owner (and presumably a big overhaul) in Zach Negin, the owner of Tabula Rasa in Little Armenia.

Silverlake Lounge has been home to countless nights of music, comedy shows, latinx drag shows, and even a scene from Ben Stiller indie-vehicle Greenberg. That’s in addition to being one of the city’s oldest watering holes. As mentioned above, the owners state that they want to keep the independent spirit of the place alive for years to come, but that’s very vague.

Given that, recently, Amoeba Records in Hollywood has been sold off and will have to pack up and move in a year, The Echo/Echoplex/Regent being taken over by Live Nation, the Steve Allen Theater finally getting demolished, a popular house comedy show Wolf Den got shut down because some neighbors complained (and are, we’re guessing, major killjoys) after years of being around, we can only hope that Negin will stay true to his word and keep indie events including comedy happening at what still is Silverlake Lounge for the time being.

Truly, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Earios, the Podcast Network by Women for All, Announces Impressive Debut Programming Slate

Earios started off with a crowdfunding campaign that promised a podcast network that would be by women, for everyone.

Between having a show with Margaret Cho, a podcast about the life and times of Britney Spears, a faux guide to celebrating Christmas, indie rock star Feist talking to guests about getting through life these days, the creator of Netflix’s Love finding what brings joy to people’s lives, diving into bits of the Dark Web, a guide to parenting from GLOW’s Kimmy Gatewood, and more, we’d say they’re starting off pretty damn well with their mission statement.

Go get into all of that at Earios here.

Alice Wetterlund to Have Stand-up Special “My Mama Is a Human and So Am I” at Amazon

We were wondering when Amazon was going to push forward with stand-up comedy specials in going toe-to-toe with Netflix.

Well, we’re glad to see that Amazon has tapped the splendid Alice Wetterlund to release a special (and, maybe, fill the space that Netflix used to by giving full comedy specials to comedians that weren’t already majorly famous at the time of their first Netflix special, highlighting some great talent, i.e. Ali Wong, Tom Segura, Jen Kirkman).

Called My Mama Is a Human and So Am I, it’s due out later this year to stream on Amazon Prime and will hopefully be the first in many comedy specials that Amazon sagaciously produces.
