Netflix Will Soon Have Its Own Sirius XM Comedy Channel

For those that don’t have access to Netflix (or a friend or family member’s Netflix password), but somehow have a Sirius XM subscription, you’ll soon be able to listen to stand-up, talk show programs, and other original programming from Netflix, perhaps the dominant hub for stand-up these days.

When it comes to the “original programming”, we’re curious to see if this will become a proving ground for some projects, show ideas, etc.

There’s no start date as of yet, so we will have to just wait and see how all of this pans out.

MST3K Is Going on a Pledge Drive for Season 12

Since the revival of Mystery Science Theater 3000 set so many crowdfunding records on Kickstarter, Joel Hodgson and company are making sure that the direct support of MST3K fans are involved going forward.

Thus, they’re doing a pledge drive that allows you to back the next season of the show as well as get access to a plethora of lovely merch (such as the poster below by Gary Glover).

Get more details and support the future of MST3K here.

Frankie Shaw Inks Overall Deal with ABC Signature Studios

Frankie Shaw, the star and creator of SMILF, just got a two year deal to develop new projects as well as “incubate” other artists/creators that are probably in the same place when SMILF was just a short film.

Shaw’s voice is one that we’re very thankful for being in comedy and television and this deal will only amplify her voice and those of other “diamonds in the rough”.

Needless to say, we’re excited to see what she comes up with over the next couple of years.

In case you didn’t know, Netflix has actually had stand-up specials on their platform for years. So, in further shining a light on comedians from around the world, they’re bringing them altogether under one banner. We’re glad this is happening as the last “global comedy event” was the wonderful Stand Up Planet hosted by Hasan Minhaj that unfortunately had one Bill Cosby as a major consultant and advisor on it.

There is no name for the series yet, but it will be coming out in 2019, presumably like all other Netflix stand-up series where everyone gets their own “episode”. We sincerely hope that they don’t pick a horribly generic name like The Standups or Comedy Lineup this time around.

So, Sacha Baron Cohen Might Have a New Show Coming Soon

So, Sacha Baron Cohen Might Have a New Show Coming Soon

A mysterious tease and reports of one of the biggest provocateur satirists around shopping a possible new show (currently in talks at Showtime) are very intriguing.

However, there are almost no details outside of that and whether Cohen will be diving deep into a ridiculous character like he’s done in the past or trying his hand at being himself and pointing a mirror back at society from a new angle.

In any case, with the likes of Nathan Fielder around in addition to Baron Cohen’s reputation of Borat, Ali G, and Bruno being pretty well established at this point, he’ll have to up his game if he’s going to pull another large scale prank performance.

Superego, One of The Funniest Podcasts Around, Will Return for 6 Episodes

Together, Matt Gourley, Jeremy Carter, Mark McConville, and Paul F. Tompkins form Superego, one of our all time favorite podcasts. It’s as ridiculous as it is brilliant and Superego one-up each other in how absurd they can be in absurdist situations, but doing so with precision.

Seriously, go binge listen to and enjoy past episodes here.

According to this announcement, there will be six new episodes, 4 done in studio and 2 done live, later this year thanks to Earwolf and Stitcher Premium.

Even though the date isn’t announced, it should be something to mark somewhere on your calendar because we think it’s that noteworthy.

The Feels Is Now Streaming on Netflix

The Feels was unquestionably one of our favorite movies of the year (and probably one that you didn’t get much of a chance to see in theaters).

You can read why we felt that way here. In short, it’s wonderfully hopeful romantic comedy set in a future that we could hopefully get to.

Thankfully, it’s now on Netflix for your streaming convenience and definitely should be part of your binge watching line-up this 4th of July.

HBO Orders Spanish-Language Comedy ‘Los Espookys’ Written by Fred Armisen, Julio Torres, and Ana Fabrega to Series

Well, this is a much welcome surprise to find its way to HBO.

In case you didn’t know, Julio Torres and Ana Fabrega have been been off-beat English language comedy gems for quite some time and we can only imagine what will come with a Spanish language comedy that they’re writing with Armisen. They’ll also been co-starring in Los Espookys with Fred as well as Bernardo Velasco and Cassandra Ciangherotti.

From the sounds of it, Los Espookys sounds kind of like Atlanta on FX, but done in Mexico City and focuses in on trying to make it in the horror genre rather than rap. That’s pretty much all we need to hear to wait with bated breath for the first teaser/trailer.

Next on the Docket for Danny McBride, Jody Hill, and David Gordon Green at HBO Is a Pilot for Satirical Family Ministry Comedy “Righteous Gemstones”

Together, McBride, Hill, and Gordon Green have brought you and, more importantly, HBO the likes of Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals.

With such a track record one has to wonder what and when the wickedly satirical trio will do next at the premium cable network. Turns out that they just  got a pilot order for a series centered around a popular, but corrupt family ministry with John Goodman playing the patriarch.

While only based on the notion that is entirely something that we’d binge watch, we do think this is already good for greenlight at HBO.

YouTube Orders Jordan Peele Sci-Fi Anthology ‘Weird City’ to Series

“Co-written by Peele and Sanders, Weird City is an anthology set in the not-too-distant future metropolis of Weird. Each episode is an exploration of issues that pertains to present day life, stories that could only be told now through the prism of sci-fi and comedy.”

Anyone feel like Jordan Peele will be getting to do his own version of Black Mirror with this show? Whatever Weird City ends up being, plenty of folks will undoubtedly be watching.

In fact, this is quite the nice get for YouTube, considering what sort of big talent find themselves at Netflix these days. Come to think of it, this might be the first YouTube Premium series that has peaked our interests in quite some time.

China Blocks Entire HBO Website Following Last Week Tonight’s Deep Dive on Xi Jinping and China

It shouldn’t come as a surprise at this point, but Xi Jinping can’t take a joke or well deserved, satirical criticism of his policies and doctrine either.

Over a week ago, John Oliver and his Last Week Tonight team did this segment about China, specifically focusing on the troubling restrictions on free expression in China by President Xi Jinping. In retaliation (and to probably keep Chinese citizens in the dark about the authoritarian and Islamophobic tendencies of Xi’s administration), Chinese State Media has just blocked access to HBO’s website.

So, Last Week Tonight has to be watched via the Dark Web in China (or maybe in Hong Kong)?

We can only imagine that it would be very hard to be a comedian, especially a political one, operating in China right now even though there’s plenty to make fun of and satirize.

MTV’s Newly Launched MTV Studios Looking to Revive ‘Daria’ Amongst Other Properties

Not only is a Daria revival/reboot officially a priority for MTV, but they might be taking a stab at bringing back Beavis and Butt-Head as well. This probably means that MTV is going to put new, original sitcoms on the backburner for awhile.

We almost thought we hit peak 90s nostalgia, but, as it turns out, not quite yet.

That being said, maybe they’ll let Bo Burnham do something connected to a reimagining of Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous.

LA Comedians Reveal That the LA Comedy Scene Does Not Pay Six Figures a Year to Comics “Breaking Into the LA Circuit”

LA Comedians Reveal That the LA Comedy Scene Does Not Pay Six Figures a Year to Comics “Breaking Into the LA Circuit”

In response to this controversial THR article by Seth Abramovitch that indeed claims, “…a newer comic just breaking into the L.A. circuit can earn anywhere from $1,250 to $2,500 per week,” many of LA’s stalwart comedians gave Vulture the true figures as to what they’ve actually made while trying to come up in LA (spoiler alert: it’s a lot of drink tickets, if anything at all).

What’s essential to understand is that being in comedy involves being in it for the sheer love of it, then trying to figure out how you can patch enough gigs, comedy-related or no, to make any sort of living. From there, a select few actually do get to make the so-called “big bucks”, but it’s pretty much feast or famine (that’s the case for most creative endeavors by the way).

Instagram Introduces IGTV Allowing You To Make Hour Long Videos for Instagram

With Facebook’s launch of Facebook Watch well under way to take on streaming services, Zuckerberg and the Facebook-owned Instagram are now making a two prong attack with the introduction of IGTV.

Instagram’s IGTV, officially unveiled today, allows users to both watch and make videos native to Instagram that are up to an hour long. We’ll have to see if such a move offers up competition in the space for uploading videos (a space almost entirely dominated by YouTube and somewhat by Vimeo).

That being said, an hour of running time does allow anything from a sketch to a TV pilot to maybe what could be considered an extended Instagram story to exist on “the Gram”. We’ll just have to wait and see if all that happens and, if so, happens en masse.

Apple Orders Immigrant Anthology Series ‘Little America’ From Kumail Nanjiani, Emily Gordon, Lee Eisenberg & Alan Yang

Well, Apple is certainly starting off their original programming line-up with a bang. Not only does this have plenty of intrigue just from the stellar writing/producing team assembled whose credits included The Big Sick, The Office, SMILF, and Master of None, but such a show couldn’t come at a more crucial time, in recent memory, for immigrant stories to be told.

Suffice it to say that we can’t even wait to see the trailer for this.

Desus & Mero Move on Up to Showtime

Apparently, Desus Nice and the Kid Mero will be hosting the very first weekly late night talk show over at Showtime.

They’ve been doing a smash up job with Desus & Mero over at Viceland, truly giving late night something very fresh and unlike anything else. If you’re unfamiliar, binge watch their YouTube channel here.

So, we can’t wait to see how much and what level of trash Desus & Mero can now talk as they’ll soon be on premium cable.

Also, since they were just borrowing the Viceland conference room to shoot their show, we can only imagine how dope, what we’re guessing will be, their actual constructed and dedicated set will look like. Perhaps, it’ll have even more woodland creatures with timbs?

Justin Roiland Says There Will Be No More Big Hiatuses Between Seasons of “Rick and Morty”

Since there’s more of a guarantee of Rick and Morty to come along (i.e. Adult Swim ordering more than 70 eps.), the wait time between seasons will be way less.

Hopefully, that will satiate even the most extreme of Rick and Morty fans and perhaps avoid another McDonald’s Szechuan sauce debacle.

Roast Battle Gets 3rd Season On Comedy Central, Expands to Mexico, and Picks Up 2nd Season in South Africa

With the way the things are in the world today, people sure are down to see comedians talk sh*t about each other in the most succinct, brutal way possible.

Roast Battle has expanded so far, so fast from its humble beginning at the Belly Room of The Comedy Store only a few years ago. Look for the 3rd season of the original Roast Battle this Summer on Comedy Central.

Mitch Hedberg’s Widow Lynn Shawcroft Has Tons of Hedberg Ephemera and Material That She’s Ready to Share

You’ve might caught glimpses of pages of Mitch Hedberg’s notebooks surface online here and there, but know that there are boxes and boxes and boxes of notebooks as well as recorded memos on tape by Hedberg as well as four entire shows shot in 16mm.

All of this is in possession by Lynn Shawcroft, Hedberg’s widow, and apparently will find its way to the world soon according to this THR column by Shawcroft.

So, it’s possible that a new Mitch Hedberg special might be on the way, which sounds pretty perfect right about now (or anytime really).

Amazon to Do a 6 Part Documentary Series on Getting JFL Montreal’s New Faces

For decades, one of the most sought out milestones in comedy when coming up has been and still is getting selected to be part of Just For Laughs Montreal’s New Faces of Comedy.

So, Amazon has decided to do a docu-series on the process and following comedians in trying to secure a slot on the renowned festival’s New Faces line-up, which will show how much stress and work goes in to essentially doing what’s supposed to be a life-changing set in front of members of the industry.

As there are cameras rolling, maybe all those picked as New Faces will actually get something out of the whole thing besides just doing a few shows in Montreal and taking a few general meetings.

We’re guessing this will drop on Amazon a bit after JFL Montreal happens this Summer.

Reductress Gets a Pilot Order for Late Night Show at Comedy Central with Abby Elliott Attached as Host

For those uninitiated with Reductress, “the Onion for feminism”, please go on a deep dive ASAP and get into their great satirical articles, podcasts, etc. that probably, at this point, surpass the simple comparisons to The Onion.

Now that you’re hopefully caught up, you can get hyped that Reductress, co-created by Beth Newell and Sarah Pappalardo, is getting their own late night pilot over at Comedy Central that they’re calling The Reductress Hour. Abby Elliott will be hosting, but doing so in character.

Whether that’s more or less in-character than Jordan Klepper is on The Opposition isn’t clear at this point, but given Reductress’ tone, we’d guess that they’ll be going as absurd as they can go.

We can only hope that it gets picked up to series so we can see what that actually looks like.

Looney Tunes Cartoon Shorts to Be Revived by Warner Bros. Animation

The cartoon shorts under the umbrella of the Looney Tunes that so many of us enjoyed during our youth is indeed being revived by Warner Bros. Animation.

1000 minutes of new shorts will be made per “season” by several animators “…to be distributed across multiple platforms including digital, mobile and broadcast.”

So, get ready for brand new Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester the Cat, Wile E Coyote, Road Runner, Yosemite Sam, Tweety Bird, and many more. We’re definitely intrigued to see how classic cartoon characters will fit into the world of animation in 2018 and that there is minimal shouting from “nostalgia police”.

Maybe if this goes well, they’ll indeed try and make Space Jam 2 happen?

Samantha Bee to Get More TBS Oversight After Ivanka Trump Slur

Samantha Bee to Get More TBS Oversight After Ivanka Trump Slur

We have a bad feeling about this.

As State Farm and Autotrader.com pulled their ads from Samantha Bee’s time slot, TBS, even after the unnecessary apologizing from both Bee and themselves, feels they need to reassure advertisers that such a thing as Bee using a curse word she used all the time (without controversy we might add) won’t happen the same way again.

So, Bee will have gone from “full creative license” to the network watching her more closely. We don’t know how much of a muzzle that puts on Bee and her team at Full Frontal, but the precedent set here isn’t great.

If all of this is supposed to be making things “even-steven” between liberals and conservatives for Roseanne tweeting out what was barely a joke and horribly racist then having get her show immediately cancelled, then we can only see both sides getting more entrenched from here on out.

Still, we hope that Full Frontal with Samantha Bee will figure it out and this won’t be like when a late night host move from 12:30AM to 11:30PM and has to become, essentially, family friendly.

Del Close Marathon Will Be Moving to LA in 2019

For two decades, a literally non-stop weekend of improv comedy madness known as the Del Close Marathon has brought joy to the NYC comedy scene.

After marking a milestone by having the UCB 4 play at Carnegie Hall this year, UCB Sunset and UCB Franklin here in LA will be the home bases for DCM in 2019 and onward.

Personally, we can’t wait as that means many of the world’s best improv teams that rarely get to perform in LA will be making an annual trek here. Keep a close eye for tickets/passes going on sale.
