Pick of the Day: The Future of the Future of LA Comedy 6/23

June 22, 2020
News

At this unprecedented moment of three months of lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the global uprising against systemic racism and oppression and police brutality, the idea of when live comedy will come back or where it will fit in these historic times we’re living through is a question that seems far from having an answer or an even an attempt at an answer. In LA specifically, live comedy falls under the category “Phase 4” of reopening, which seems to be far, far away at a date TBD.

Thus, we here at The Comedy Bureau are attempting to attempt to have some sort of conversation with The Future of the Future of LA Comedy.

Perhaps, this virtual roundtable discussion could lead to some start to some answers about live comedy in LA going forward in regards to reopening, safety, sustainability, diversity/inclusion, and supporting the plethora of important causes happening right now.

Joining TCB founder Jake Kroeger will be a panel of people that operate throughout all corners of the LA comedy scene including Joel Mandelkorn (producer of Hot Tub with Kurt & Kristen, CleftClips), Barbara Holliday (owner/booker of Flappers Comedy Club), and Christian Chavez (owner of Echoes on Pico). Their discussion will hopefully be the start of getting on the same page as we believe that comedy and live performance in general will come back safely and maybe better than ever.

The Future of The Future of LA Comedy will be live-streamed this Tuesday, June 23rd at 3PM PT/6PM ET thanks to the fine folks at Hold The Phone Comedy. Please tune in at bit.ly/tcblayoutube.

Google Is Making It So You Can Search Key Moments in YouTube Videos

Oh, being able to index stand-up clips or any sort of comedy video, whether it be a sketch, short film, (especially) a panel discussion/video podcast seems like it will be quite handy and, perhaps, open up a whole new audience and accompanying accessibility to comedy content.

On the flip side, it’d be wonderful to find, you know, a specific joke, scene that really resonates (and perhaps share it with others to increase the visibility of someone’s stand-up, sketch comedy, etc.)

This functionality is available to all YouTube creators that have added timestamps to their video description.

YouTube Has Just Ordered an Animated Presentation of the Dumb People Town Podcast

So much of the fun that’s had by The Sklar Brothers, Daniel Van Kirk, and their guests might be brought further to life if this goes to series at YouTube.

If there does end up being a Dumb People Town animated series, we can’t wait to see how the riffs and runs as well as Dumb People Town’s most popular game Guess the Agee will play out in animated form.

Issa Rae’s Insecure Season 1 Will Stream on YouTube Later This Month for Your Binging Convenience

On July 23rd, you’ll be able to watch the entire first season of Issa Rae’s Insecure if you don’t have HBO or HBOGO or a friend or family member nice enough to lend you their password.

All of it will be up on HBO’s YouTube channel, which does mean you will have to watch it with commercials, but we’re guessing that you’ll be OK with that.

YouTube Orders ‘Game Grumps’ from Dan Harmon’s Starburns Industries, a Comedy About Competitive Gaming

Whether it be network television, cable, streaming services, and now YouTube Red, Dan Harmon has almost done a show on almost every place where you can watch TV.

YouTube announced their series pick-ups today, which includes series orders of projects from Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, accomplished director Doug Liman, and, most interesting to us, Harmon’s Starburns Industries.

It’ll be a scripted comedy following the players in an eSports league called Game Grumps. Perhaps, it’ll be a tinge like Rick and Morty playing Roy…

“The Interview” Became 2014’s Top Selling Movie Title on YouTube and Google Play

(via The Wrap)

Over the long Christmas weekend, The Interview raked in $2.8 million at over 300 theaters, but made nearly five times that amount in VOD sales.

Being simultaneously released on YouTube, Google Play, and Xbox Video, The Interview also got $15 million from those renting and buying the movie online. That number put it at the top of the chart for YouTube and Google Play as the top selling movie title of the entire year.

It’s still a long way to go to recoup the production and marketing budget as well as the untold cost of the hack of Sony Pictures, but there is undoubtedly a growing number of people willing to pay to watch their movies from the comfort of wherever they are.

What this ultimately means for the movies of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, controversial comedies, and overall movie budgets has yet to be seen. Hopefully, 2015 will hinge less on hesitation and more on faith in the end product.

For $5.99 to rent and $14.99 to buy, The Interview is now available for you to watch via YouTube.

You now don’t have to be near one of few hundred independent/art house theaters to go see it tomorrow, though you should go do that if you can. You can stand for the freedom of expression from foreign oppressors from the comfort of your own home. It’s the way that many Americans prefer to stand up for their rights these days.

Go watch Seth Rogen, James Franco, Lizzy Caplan, and Randall Park satirize the North Korean regime right now, right here.

UPDATE: You can also watch The Interview on VOD via Xbox Video and Google Play.

Study Finds That More People Watch TV Online at YouTube Than Anywhere Else

(via Variety)

Out of all the places that you can currently watch TV online including Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, and so many more, the first online video giant, YouTube, still holds it spot at top of the online streaming mountain.

While that might result might be unsurprising, you should note that Netflix is only came in 5% under YouTube and, given the trail blazing slate of original programming over the last few years, Netflix is only headed onwards and upwards in their share of the online TV market.

Based on how crowded the field is and that YouTube has plenty of viable competition, it’s not surprising that YouTube is reinvesting in its top content creators.

YouTube to Spend More on Its Top Content Creators

(via Variety)

As the digital space gets more and more flooded with content from all angles including Netflix, Funny or Die, Hulu, Amazon, etc. in addition to many networks offering their content fully online, YouTube is no longer the ubiquitous place to watch original content online as it once was.

In a recent announcement, YouTube has stated that will be investing more in their top content creators in order to let them generate more videos as well as keep them around at YouTube instead of being lured somewhere else.

The amount and how it will be divvied up has yet to be determined, but seeing that YouTube has to increase their spending in order to compete online is yet another sign of the migration of viewership from TV to the Internet.

Also, YouTube’s stars might just have a budget soon to make funny viral videos outside of their rooms away from the front of their computers a little more often.

Through the power of the Internet, YouTube will be hosting a live improv streamed online on Aug. 1st and Aug. 2nd from Tokyo, London, and Los Angeles.

Led by Lloyd Ahlquist of Epic Rap Battles of History, suggestions will be given online and improvisers from around the world will do short from improv games that will be later cut up into a web series.

With the aid of the Internet, we wonder if people will be able to give better suggestions than “your mom”.

Microsoft In Talks to Partner with France’s Internet Video Site Dailymotion

If this potential partnership happens with Dailymotion and Microsoft and Dailymotion gains serious traction in the States, you’ll have to seriously think about where to upload your sketches and parody videos between them and YouTube, Vimeo and Funny or Die or whether to do all four.

It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility if, in a few years, there were bidding wars for hosting funny viral videos between them all much like studios do for scripts, projects, and properties.

YouTube To Crack Down on Bogus Video Views

Supposedly, this will only affect a relatively minimal amount of videos on YouTube, but the result has yet to be seen, though it would be hard to see why comedy sketches and web videos would get docked views.

Perhaps, everyone who did a Harlem Shake video will get a few thousand views taken off?

Google Planning To Put YouTube Into Cars

The plan for web video watching while driving is a scary prospect considering that so many great web series could be the cause of car accidents. Luckily, with this technology unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the driver can only watch YouTube through the car’s system while in park (that’s not to say you can’t still watch it on your phone).

In theory, coupled with hands free cars also from Google, that you’ll be able to watch something like Bo Burnham’s special what. while you’re in traffic (have you watched what. yet? It’s fantastic)

Also, you can buy the album version if you want to pay in some way for this great performance.

The nearly three week comedy festival that is SF Sketchfest every year is a must for so many comedy fans, but, of course, there are those of us that are just unable to make it for whatever reason.

Luckily, they just started a YouTube channel where they’re going to upload clips of the festival for all to see including, just at this moment, panel with Bruce Campbell and Pinky and The Brain.

‘SNL’ Launches First YouTube Channel Internationally with ZEFR

So, online, you’ll be able to watch old clips of SNL on YouTube so long as you’re not in the U.S. You’ll have to go Yahoo for that if you’re stateside.

However, we wonder if the digital shorts and sketches from the latest season will still just be on Hulu and whether this will be too many different places online to watch the show or if it will make it easier for anyone, anywhere to watch whatever they want from SNL.

It’s kind of surprising that it has taken this long for YouTube to put together it’s on film festival, but they’re heading up to Toronto this November and holding their very own “Buffer Festival” featuring the best and brightest of YouTube.

We’re assuming that there will be a livestream of panel on YouTube comment threads that will be subjected to the stereotypical YouTube comment thread.
