TCB Debriefing 7/7-7/20: Bob Newhart, Emmys Noms, Hulu Comedy Specials

July 20, 2024
News
a different man, a24, adam perason, anime, bill burr, bob newhart, comics to watch, d'arcy carden, futurama, hulu, inside out 2, jay johnston, jennifer lawrence, joe's pub, ledge theatre, margaret cho, netflix, rachel bloom, rick and morty, roy wood jr, sebastian stan, sunny nights, tenacious d, variety, will forte, z-suite

1. R.I.P. Bob Newhart, 1929-2024. Never forget that Newhart had the first #1 Billboard charting comedy album with The Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart. Honestly, can’t remember the last time that happened since then.

2. Noms for this year’s Primetime Emmys were announced this week, which saw Ryan Gosling get nominated for breaking a bunch of times on SNL and The Bear getting a record number of nominations as a comedy with almost no comedy in it (don’t get it twisted– it’s a brilliant, astounding, paradigm shifting sort of show). Thank goodness What We Do in the Shadows got nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. Their honors are long overdue.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES NOMINEES:
Abbott Elementary
The Bear
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Hacks
Only Murders in the Building
Palm Royale
Reservation Dogs
What We Do in the Shadows

Full list of Emmy noms here.

3. Hulu, alongside Amazon, is gunning for Netflix’s big comedy fish, which, this week, includes Bill Burr and Roy Wood Jr. At one time, getting an HBO special was the gold standard for comedians, then it shifted to a Netflix special. The time for some new standard might be nigh.

4. Sebastian Stan and Adam Pearson (who we hope you would have seen in Under the Skin) take a different approach to facing off in A Different Man, the latest dark comedy from A24 and director Aaron Schimberg. This very well could be a hallmark episode of The Twilight Zone, but with what seems like a hilariously satirical twist. Please enjoy the trailer for A Different Man here, then look for it in limited release this Fall.

5. Inside Out 2, at $1.37 billion in global box office, is now the second highest grossing animated film of all time (Collider) only to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Don’t be surprised if it gets #1 and if Disney Pixar has to figure out how to do sequels that cover Riley’s college and early twenties.

6. Oof, what a time for Tenacious D to cancel a tour and put all creative endeavors on hold because Kyle Gass said “Don’t miss next time,” referring to the recent assassination attempt of Donald Trump, during a concert. It almost seems like they will actually have to legitimately come up with the greatest song in the world to fix this mess.

7. Rachel Bloom‘s high concept comedy special, “Death, Let Me Do My Special” is going to find it’s way to Netflix (Variety). It’s kind of criminal that Bloom has gone this long without top billing after Crazy Ex-Girlfriend went off the air.

8. Star Wars, one of the most popular franchises of all time, went anime and now it’s Rick and Morty, one of the most popular animated franchises in the 21st century. Thursdays at midnight, starting on Aug. 15th, Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith will be a bit more stylistically animated and probably even zanier with this anime bent to the series from Takashi Sano. Adult Swim will be airing both English and Japanese language versions. Take a gander at the trailer here.

9. Futurama just keeps Futurama-ing (perfectly skewering the present time thousands of years in the future) and we like it that way. Peep the trailer for season 12 here, due out July 29th on Hulu.

10. The one and only Margaret Cho has just been bestowed the Vanguard Artist-in-Residence at Joe’s Pub that will allow her to handpick and personally curate a fair chunk of programming at one of NYC and NYC comedy’s most cherished stages (THR). Maybe this’ll lead to Cho opening up her own venue at some point?

11. There’s quite a bit major reshuffling in LA comedy theaters over the last couple of weeks. The Ledge Theatre in LA is coming to a close at the end of this month with The Pack Theater relocating from The Broadwater in Hollywood to their current space in Los Feliz. There’s a lot of dust to be pardoned here, but make sure to go support the Ledge while you still can and patronize the Pack when it gets up and running just a few doors down from The Clubhouse.

A post shared by The Ledge Theatre (@ledge_theatre)

12. Variety announced it’s first Comics to Watch line-up that would have to forego a victory lap at JFL Montreal. Hats off to this year’s picks Asif Ali, Ralph Barbosa, Jackie Fabulous, Rachel Feinstein, Tina Friml, Troy Iwata, Preacher Lawson, Leslie Liao, Nathan Macintosh, and Saul Trujillo, all comics that you have probably seen on TV more than a few times already or come up endlessly in one of your social media feeds.

13. Those missing Darcy C’Arden and Will Forte on the reg, fret not, as they will be the stars of a dramedy following a tanning business gone out-of-control called Sunny Nights (Deadline). One tiny detail is that it’ll be streaming on Aussie streamer, Stan, so, umm, you’re going to have to find a way to get access to that.

14. Jennifer Lawrence is staying in the comedy lane with Why Don’t You Love Me? (Indiewire). It’ll be from A24, so, as a comedy, you can count on reality probably being bent in some way shape or form (and we’re here for it).

15. Upcoming Tubi comedy series, Z-Suite (has nothing to do with zombies unfortunately), possibly sounds like a PG-rated update of The Lord of the Flies (Deadline) with Gen-Z’ers suddenly in charge at a NYC ad agency.

16. We’ll leave you with this: Mr. Show might play differently with Jay Johnston with being a Jan. 6th insurrectionist.

It was our hope that the biggest and brightest names in comedy would be coming out to do big fundraiser in the fight against COVID-19. Indeed, they have and continued to do so.

The latest star-studded comedy fundraiser is Americares’ COVID Is No Joke that will air LIVE on covidisnojoke.org and Americares YouTube channel at 5PM PT/8PM ET on Fri. May 1st.

COVID Is No Joke will be a jam-packed hour of a comedy variety live-stream spanning stand-up, stories, sketches, etc. from the likes of:

Elizabeth Banks, Ike Barinholtz, Jack Black and Tenacious D, Wayne Brady, D’Arcy Carden, Kristin Chenoweth, Tom Cotter, Mackenzie Davis, Mark Duplass, Will Ferrell, Gal Gadot, Kyle Gass, Linda Hamilton, Chelsea Handler, Mindy Kaling, Kerri Louise, Jonathan Mangum, Patton Oswalt, Natalia Reyes, Adam Scott, Finn Straley, Paige Weldon, Jenny Yang and more with actor/director/producer and Americares own Tony Goldwyn set to host.

That line-up really spans so many different corners of comedy and even includes names of comedians that we really dig that you ought to know going forward.

The funds raised will go to providing essential equipment and support (including mental health) for frontline health workers here in the U.S. and across the globe. $100K worth of donations has already been guaranteed FYI.

You can support Americares now or during the event by making a donation on americares.org or by texting “JOKE” to 20222 to make a $25 donation.

It has been six years since we last got a record for Jack Black and Kyle Gass, the comedic rock duo better known as Tenacious D.

The wait for said record might just be over as a tour will definitely and a new record might possibly happen later this year.

The tour has 10 dates thus far ranging from San Bernardino to Washington D.C. and tickets will go on sale this Friday morning. Watch the animated announcement here.

Perhaps, if all goes well, another Festival Supreme will happen 2019 or 2020?

Jack Black Confirms That a Tenacious D Post-Apocalyptic Rock Opera Is in the Works

While on Conan, Jack Black confirmed that Jables and KG will return in the not so distant future with a Tenacious D comedy rock opera. After some considerable time off and a foray into jazz, it’s about time for a new hour or so of Tenacious D.

Black didn’t give up too many details, but just the notion that it’s underway should be exciting enough.

As it is “post-apocalyptic rock opera”, it should also be the perfect soundtrack for our time.

The likes of Weird Al Yankovic, Tenacious D, Rachel Bloom, Trevor Moore, and more have brought the art of musical comedy to a point where they warrant an entire TV special honoring their works over the years.

So, College Humor and IFC are doing just that with the very first CollegeHumor’s Comedy Music Hall of Fame. The great Paul F. Tompkins will be presiding as the host and there will be retrospectives, interviews, and new videos to be seen.

The festivities can be seen on IFC on Fri. Jun. 19th at 10PM.

Here’s an announcement as proof of all of the above.

Weird Al, Tenacious D, Grand Budapest Hotel, and Joan Rivers All Win at This Year’s Grammys

February 9, 2015
Uncategorized
alexandre desplat, grammys, grand budapest hotel, joan rivers, mandatory fun, tenacious d, weird al yankovic

In the gigantic crowd of Grammy nominees, finding the comedy winners might be a little difficult, especially since they’re never all announced during the telecast.

So, we’ve hunted through all them and found 2015 Grammy winners in or somehow connected to comedy.

Best Comedy Album-Weird Al Yankovic “Mandatory Fun”
Best Spoken Word Album-Joan Rivers “Diary of a Mad Diva”
Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media-Alexandre Desplat “The Grand Budapest Hotel”
Best Metal Performance-Tenacious D-“The Last In Line”

Honestly, there are no surprises here and we’re glad to see Yankovic cap off his 2014 Billboard #1 album with a Grammy win.

Now you can go enjoy the rest of your evening with Better Call Saul and Last Week Tonight.

Here Are The Comedy Nominees for The 2015 Grammys

Uncategorized
everything is awesome, grammys, jim gaffigan, joan rivers, louis ck, mandatory fun, obsessed, oh my god, patton oswalt, sarah silverman, tenacious d, tragedy plus comedy equals time, we are miracles, weird al yankovic

The Grammys have just announced the majority of the nominees for their 83 categories, which include Best Recording Package, Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package, Best Album Notes, Best Contemporary Christian Music Album, and Best Comedy Album.

Of course, we’re only concerned with comedy here rather than how an album is packaged or what music is playing in your local chapel’s gift shop, so the nominees for Best Comedy Album are:

“Mandatory Fun”-Weird Al Yankovic
“Obsessed”-Jim Gaffigan
“Oh My God”-Louis C.K.
“Tragedy Plus Comedy Equals Time”-Patton Oswalt
“We Are Miracles”-Sarah Silverman

Honestly, it’ll be hard to tell who’s going to win as Silverman has an Emmy for We Are Miracles, Yankovic scored #1 Billboard spot with Mandatory Fun, and Oswalt, C.K., and Gaffigan are critically and commercially amongst the top tier of funniest people in comedy right now.

Also, we’d like to note that Joan Rivers got nominated posthumously in the Best Spoken Word Album category for “Diary of a Mad Diva”, Tenacious D got nominated for Best Metal Performance for covering Dio’s “The Last in Line”, and Tegan & Sara and The Lonely Island’s “Everything Is Awesome” from The Lego Movie got nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

See the full list, if you dare, of nominees here.

Tenacious D Give a Tour of Their Festival Supreme Haunted House/Maze and Rock the House on Conan

You’re seeing a lot of Tenacious D in the news and deservedly so. They’ve announced their worldwide tour and the second edition of their comedy and music festival, Festival Supreme, is tomorrow.

On their appearance Conan, Jack Black goes into how he funded the festival as well as going through a map of the haunted house/maze, one of only many attractions coming tomorrow afternoon at The Shrine near USC.

Then, of course, no Tenacious D appearance on late night would be really complete without Jack Black and Kyle Gass rocking one of their tunes live, which, in this case, happens to be their song “History”.

Tickets for most of these shows running through two continents from Nov. 30th-Feb. 14th are now on sale.

Exposition Park will no longer be the site of the 2nd Festival Supreme, but don’t worry as this does not mean it’s cancelled. The date is the same, the mind blowing, amazing line-up is still the same, and, actually, they’re in the same part of town.

The Shrine Expo Hall and Grounds, another gigantic LA venue, will be the home for this year’s Festival Supreme, which is literally a brief walk from Exposition Park on the south side of the USC campus (The Shrine is on the north side).

Tickets are still on sale for $99.

We don’t know exactly what they have planned, but we can only hope it’s as big and crazy as they can possibly imagine.

Tenacious D’s Festival Supreme Is Happening This October on Santa Monica Pier

Boasting the likes of Sarah Silverman, Mr. Show, Tig Notaro, Zach Galifianakis, Eric Idle, Reggie Watts, Fred Armisen, Princess (Maya Rudolph’s Prince cover band), Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Neil Hamburger, and more in addition to the comedy rock gods duo Tenacious D themselves, Jack Black and Kyle Gass are putting together quite the one day comedy rock festival.

Called Festival Supreme, it’s going to take place at the Santa Monica Pier Sat. October 19th, and if you have the dough (tickets go from $99-$250), you can be part of what could be pretty amazing.

Coupled with the LA Podcast Festival taking place two weeks before also in Santa Monica, you might want to stay on the west side of LA for comedy in October.
