One of our favorite Sunday stand-up show/cookout/hangs was the Golden Hour co-hosted by MK Paulsen and Kyle Berseth featuring Simon Gibson.

However, they had to go on hiatus for awhile because they lost out on their venue, even though it was a DIY, makeshift space made from a parking lot/loading dock.

We’ll, we’re happy to announce that Golden Hour is returning this Sunday, July 15th with the same great stand-up, free hot dogs, and basking under the LA sunset/dusk, but doing so in Mid-City at START LA (2266 Venice Blvd., Los Angeles, CA).

The first line-up is a doozy with Daniel Rugg Webb, Maggie Maye, Sheng Wang, Megan Gailey, and Moses Storm on top of it being MK’s birthday.

So, make this your plans for this Sunday. Doors open at 7PM. Get more details here.

As you probably well know by now, San Francisco gets some really dazzling line-ups for their comedy festivals. If you think about who’s playing SF Sketchfest, Clusterfest, and The Barbary Comedy Tent at Outside Lands, it’s a real treasure trove of comedy on a pretty regular basis.

This year’s Barbary line-up for Outside Lands is no exception as you can see above.

If you live or will be in the SF area on August 10th-12th, you’ll probably want to go to this. Passes are on sale now starting at $149.50 for a single day and $375 for a 3-day pass.

In case you didn’t know, Netflix has actually had stand-up specials on their platform for years. So, in further shining a light on comedians from around the world, they’re bringing them altogether under one banner. We’re glad this is happening as the last “global comedy event” was the wonderful Stand Up Planet hosted by Hasan Minhaj that unfortunately had one Bill Cosby as a major consultant and advisor on it.

There is no name for the series yet, but it will be coming out in 2019, presumably like all other Netflix stand-up series where everyone gets their own “episode”. We sincerely hope that they don’t pick a horribly generic name like The Standups or Comedy Lineup this time around.

Jim Jefferies’ Latest Special “This Is Me Now” Is Coming This Friday

Uncategorized
jim jefferies, netflix, stand up, this is me now

The last time Jim Jefferies seem to reach another level in comedy here in America was when he went on a rant on gun control in a comedy special.

With his next special “This Is Me Now” coming to Netflix on July 13th on the heels of his current weekly satirical show on Comedy Central, we’re intensely curious as to what Jefferies will be serving up. There are undoubtedly higher expectations this time around, considering that there is a trend right now for comedy to have a message of some sort, and Jim likes taking on traditionally controversial topics.

There is a teaser for This Is Me Now, but there are no actual bits from the special in it. As far as we can tell, Jim is poking fun at the fact that he has to “grow up” with his comedy while, in actuality, doing just that.

The Dresden (1760 N. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles, CA) in Los Feliz is a pretty much an LA landmark with its long standing music showcases (Marty and Elayne specifically) and beautiful dining room and, of course, being prominently featured in Swingers.

On Monday, July 16th, they’ll be adding a comedy show to their recent repertoire as The Dresden Comedy Hour with Matt Lieb and Drew Platt will be making its debut.

Their inaugural line-up is solid with Solomon Georgio, Debra DiGiovanni, and John Michael Bond and the show itself is FREE. Not that you need an excuse to go to The Dresden (or maybe you do if you’ve been “over it” for awhile), but you should dip into the Dresden to catch what should be a nice, tight stand-up show.

Please Give Sam Jay’s Debut Album “Donna’s Daughter” a Listen

Many people around the country might have had their first taste of Sam Jay through her writing on SNL (along with the occasional cameo in an episode here and there). Those lucky enough to have seen her stand-up (there’s 15 minutes of on Netflix now FYI) know that Sam’s comedy is as honest, vulnerable, and fierce as it can be.

We’ve actually said that she very well could be a Patrice O’Neal for these times. After listening to her debut album, Donna’s Daughter, we’ll double down on everything we’ve said above. Jay doesn’t shy away from the complexities of discovering her sexuality, her divorce, and her take on politics/Trump. Her delivery and cadence are so unique and forceful, you can’t help but want to hang on every phrase.

Throughout the album, Sam also has interludes (reminiscent of interludes on a rap album) giving an even more intimate look into chats she has had surrounding the jokes and stories in her hour. Though we’ve heard comedy mixtapes before, this is still a refreshing way to listen to an hour of stand-up.

Donna’s Daughter is available now from Comedy Central Records on iTunes and on “all the other sh*ts too!”

Netflix’s 1st Batch of 15 Minute Stand-Up Specials, The Comedy Lineup, Is Definitely Binge Worthy

July 5, 2018
Uncategorized
comedy lineup, netflix, stand up

If one of Netflix’s main goals in producing original content is to make things that you can’t help but watch more of, then they succeeded yet again with their first round of 15 minute stand-up specials with The Comedy Lineup.

Specials from Michelle Buteau, Ian Karmel, Taylor Tomlinson, Phil Wang, Sam Jay, Sabrina Jalees, Jak Knight, and Tim Dillon all began streaming this week and are offer a delicious morsel of stand-up from a well curated line-up (that’s pretty intersectionally represented in so many different ways). It’s more to enjoy than an average stand-up set on television that isn’t a special and, as is Netflix’s style, done looser to allow the comics to be who they really are. Once more, Netflix is blazing a trail in the stand-up arena and it’s hard to imagine them slowing down any time soon.

In fact, The Comedy Lineup is so enjoyable that you’ll forgive how generically bland the name of the whole series sounds.

So, binge away through two hours worth of stand-up this 4th of July (and the rest of the week that you’re probably treating kind of like a holiday) as The Comedy Lineup is now streaming at Netflix.

W. Kamau Bell’s Private School Negro, Wherein He Delightfully Proves Trump Is Racist, Is Now Streaming on Netflix

June 26, 2018

For a couple of years now, W. Kamau Bell has been primarily focused on his critically acclaimed CNN series United Shades of America. Just in case you forgot, Bell is a very fun stand-up to watch even though he’s a very overtly political comedian (having a warm, inviting demeanor might be a good place to start when doing effective political comedy these days).

His new hour Private School Negro is a great reminder how jubilant and jovial Kamau can be while delving into potentially divisive material and still make it all work. Even though he spends several minutes on a bit focused on Trump undeniably being a racist (and his supporters who say you can’t really call him a racist), it’s done up in such a playful way that those exhausted on Trump humor might still enjoy it.

Another way that Kamau deals with talking about politics and race so well in this special is that he brings humanity to it, specifically in sharing stories about raising his daughters who are biracial. It’s both sweet and offers perspective in what is, often times, mostly an ideological fight.

All in all, Kamau has made a political comedy special that is very much of the time, but, thankfully, has some legitimate hope in it.

W. Kamau Bell: Private School Negro is now streaming on Netflix.

Here’s the First Trailer for Netflix’s 15 Minute Special Series “The Comedy Lineup”

Here’s your first look at the first batch of Netflix’s stand-up experiment of having 15 minute specials (though they could have tried to come up with a much-less-generic-sounding name).

As you can see, Michelle Buteau, Ian Karmel, Taylor Tomlinson, Sam Jay, Phil Wang, Sabrina Jalees, Jak Knight, and Tim Dillon are all up to bat who we’re all really on board for.

Also, you might notice in the trailer that rear close up angle on the comics, which is intriguing and has us curious how that’ll play out on the specials.

Look for this edition of The Comedy Lineup on July 3rd on Netflix.
