Other than trying to watch Maria’s social media feeds to see if you can watch her workshop her new hour over coffee with her or during her runs at The Clubhouse, you can watch her along with a great line-up of stand-ups and support the Freedom for Immigrants charity on August. 27th at Highland Park’s Hi Hat (5043 York Blvd., Los Angeles, CA).

As far as we can see, you need to go to this if you can. Tickets are $40 (21+ only) and you can (and very much should) get them here. Don’t be surprised if they sell out.

Peacock has already been off-to-the-races in terms of putting on a great weekly Thursday stand-up show in the heart of Atwater Village.

This Thursday is very special as you can see that the writers of Conan are assembling on to one show WITH Conan sidekick and announcer, the one and only Andy Richter hosting. Did we mention that it’s only a $5 suggested donation to attend? OK, we mentioned it now. So, make a reminder on your phone for #TeamPeacock (or PeaCoco?) at Club Tee Gee this Thurs. 6/27.

Once upon a time, Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer used to take the stage together at UCB to do something called Crash Test. It was a live show where Paul and Rob got to do whatever the hell they wanted (i.e. an aggro-version of musical chairs, accidentally talking to celebrity assistants in the crowd, going over Vin Diesel’s real FB page, etc.) in between great stand-ups. Eventually, that led to an entire comedy special that they did on a glass bus.

It has been more than couple of a years since Huebel and Scheer have dove into this wondrous chaos, but that’s all changing as they will be reprising Crash Test again at Largo Thurs. May 30th at 8:30PM. Go get your tickets now as we have no doubt that this will be something special.

If you missed his run at Dynasty Typewriter a few months back, you have another chance to catch the brilliant Eddie Izzard (and a better chance with way, way more seats available) and his new hour WUNDERBAR this Summer at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.

His last tour took him to dozens of countries and saw him do his act in more than a few languages. There’s no telling how Izzard will top himself this time.

Tickets are $55-$85 and you can (and very, very much should) get them here.

Tickets are $12 and you best get them here.

The jokes of Ryan Conner kind of sneak up on you as it has in LA for years. He may seem mild mannered in appearance and has a calm, approachable presence, but his writing and delivery are impeccable and hidden-in-the-seams of his very natural cadence (on top of having a fascinating life story).

His tradecraft was put on display in this set from last week’s Corden and it does not disappoint. Please watch and enjoy it here.

Here Is Brody Stevens’ Set on Conan

Brody Stevens should have gotten to do a lot more things for how purely funny he is. In the last several days, you might have scoured the Internet to watch Brody do his thing, which is what we all should have been doing more of when he was around, and saw something like his set on The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail.

For us, we immediately wanted to rewatch and share his set from 2012 on Conan.

It’s special for a few reasons:

1) It is one of his first big time stand-up performances on TV
2) It is one of his first late night spots
3) Most importantly, it’s one of the first times that a national audience got to see Brody be Brody, i.e. the in-the-moment-performance-art-jock that people knew and loved (and thankfully JP, Conan, and Team Coco let that happen in this set).

We weren’t able to find the set outside of the context of Enjoy It!, but we asked the good folks at Team Coco about it and they now have the set for you to watch and enjoy right here.

Oh, you might notice that he indeed jokes about being cut out of Judd Apatow’s Funny People in this set. Judd Apatow found the footage of Brody in Funny People and actually brought everything full circle by showing it on Conan this week.

Now, she’ll be taping a half hour over at the Lyric Hyperion on Thurs. Mar. 28th at 8PM with the great Kira Soltanovich opening. Admission is FREE and you can get more details and RSVP here.

FYI, you might want to be careful googling what’s on the flyer if you don’t already know what it is.

Hampton Yount Keeps It Fantastically Silly and Dark on Third Album “Able.”

March 5, 2019

Hampton Yount has always been able (pun intended?) to keep the balance of comedically pushing towards the dark side in all of his material and keeping an unmistakable silliness about it all. Hopefully, you’ve gotten a taste of that in watching his stand-up over the years, hearing his riffing on the new MST3K, or listening to him on Suicide Buddies.

This third album Able. (in the trio of Unbearable and Bearable) is the tightest and most focused offering from Hampton thus far. It’s a very, very fun ride through the whole hour no matter how dark the territory in his material (political, personal, or otherwise) gets. The album cover really hits home this album’s satirical mischief.

So, this Tuesday, Able. comes out on Audible (release on other platforms to come soon) and you can (and very much should) pre-order/get it here.

Steph Tolev stepped foot in LA with her brash, colorful, unapologetic, yet always playful stand-up had us doubled over laughing instantly. She’s one of Canada’s latest great comedy exports and this new hour I’m Not Well is the evidence to back that up.

Her gruff voice, spirited delivery, and unabashed honesty all get painted with her beautifully explicit, personal stories and observations. No matter how blue it gets, there is an undeniable charm to it all (even when she talks about bringing back creepy aunts). Even hearing some of these bits again, we still find ourselves with a wide smile and a big chuckle.

I’m Not Well comes out this Friday from Comedy Records and you can get/pre-order it on iTunes here.

It has been a few years since Sara Schaefer’s great debut album Chrysalis and the care and attention to detail and structuring in this new hour Live Laugh Love that has been put in within that time is evident.

Altering between a running joke of a song and personal observations and grand stories of how everyday minutia is fraught with the divisiveness of our times, Schaefer offers up another album that really gets deep into the humor of the human experience.

It’s a real, satisfying journey of self-discovery that she takes on (especially that Hobby Lobby story) and few other comedy albums right now are going this deep.

So, please get Live Laugh Love right now right here.

As you probably know by now, the beloved Brody Stevens passed away. It has affected so many people as Brody was a part of so many different circles, scenes, groups, etc. and had such strong connection with all of them.

In light of his struggles with mental health, there will be a festival at The Comedy Store in Brody’s honor that will benefit Brody’s family and mental health awareness foundations.

This first Enjoy It! Brody Stevens’ Festival of Friendship: A Night of a Thousand Loving Friends of Brody Stevens will take place next Tuesday, March 5th at The Comedy Store, presented by Sam Tripoli, Sarah Mello, and JC Coccoli.

From the looks of it, this will be a recurring thing and we can’t think of a better way to remember Brody for years and years to come.

Tickets for the main room shows are now available here and here, respectively.

One of Culver City’s gems has been The Secret Show, a monthly stand-up show located in the speakeasy style bar at The Blind Barber. It’s always packed (they actually had to do an early and late show because they had such big turnouts) and Chappelle has taken such a shine to the place, he’ll occasionally do a very intimate night there.

So, as there is now a Blind Barber in Highland Park (5715 N Figueroa St.), the Secret Show is now expanding over there starting Mon., Mar. 11th at 8PM.

Of course, the show will still be invite only. However, you can sign-up for their mailing list to get said invite at barbershowhp@gmail.com.

With a line-up of Maria Bamford, David Gborie, Joe Zimmerman, Dan Boulger, Brian Moote, Jono Zalay, and Logan Guntzelman, we really think you ought to get on that list.

Ryan Stout Makes the Case for Jokes Being Jokes and Ends Up With Another Sharp, Funny Album with “Man In The Suit”

February 5, 2019
Uncategorized

Where Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette, amongst several other layers, deconstructs comedy in a way that points out some natural flaws, Ryan Stout takes a stand to defend the art and craft, effectively reconstructing it with his latest hour, and album called Man In The Suit.

Throughout, Stout manages to make his case for jokes being taken at face value as jokes (as opposed to being censored for offensiveness by anyone) on this record all while doing what he does best: play mental chess vs. the audience with his incredibly clever and dark jokes. Like Bill Burr, he hits points that you may disagree with, but usually gets you laughing anyway because that is what he primarily cares about. Stout might even be more calculated than Burr on Man In The Suit with how he pushes and pulls his audiences right to where he wants them.

The discourse between political correctness and comedy will never end (what subjective arguments in art are ever truly over?), but, at the very least, Stout gave us another fine hour of comedy in the process.

Man In The Suit just dropped today and you can (and should) get here.
