The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 261: Linzy Beltran & Comedia Por Todo

June 25, 2025
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
fringe, hollywood fringe, linzy beltran, race comedy, solo show

At the same time, comedy can indeed speak truth to power and also express joy from one’s unique perspective, but it can be quite the balancing act to do both at the same time. One Linzy Beltran manages the feat with a bold stroke of unabashed silliness with her solo show El Mago Loco, currently playing at the Hollywood Fringe. For this week’s TCB Field Report, we explore Linzy’s own explorations within and outside herself to bring to the stage a show that’s crucial, playful, and kind-of-not-really-a-magic-show that has a magician as the main character.

June 11, 2025
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
edinburgh fringe, erica bitton, solo show

Almost always, the work that goes into a deeply personal solo show is almost entirely invisible. There are years of work and reworking and giving up and getting re-obsessed that drive a person to create something possibly so unique and inspiring and hilarious and then perform over and over and over and over again only to have audiences marvel an hour at a time. Erica Bitton and her work with her amazing solo show Vacuum Girl has gone through all of its peaks and valleys all the way to the marvelous place that it is now. We talk to her all about it on this week’s TCB Field Report.

This week’s TCB Field Report has a frank conversation with beloved LA scene staple Lindsay Adams on her constant quest to better herself as both a comedian and a person. Pick of the Day: A Tale of Two Titties: Stupid Cancer Fundraiser (in NYC) 5/7

April 29, 2024
News
cancer, julia johns, nyc comedy, solo show, storytelling

While there is a wave of solo shows that are coming around right now as Edinburgh Fringe and various other Fringe festivals are on the horizon, you might wonder which ones to put your money and time into and which one’s to, perhaps, skip.

Well, Julia Johns’ A Tale of Two Titties is certainly in the category of solo shows you’ve got to watch. Over the last few years, Johns, a cancer survivor, has made, possibly, the most delightful show that you could make about going through such an awful experience and a unique one at that since it’s illustrated personally by her. It’s ultimately a joyful, hopeful show that’s bristling with several refreshing brushes of silliness that might be the perfect blend of what one might need to see on stage right now.

For New Yorkers, the amazingly titled A Tale of Two Titties will be playing at Littlefield come Tues. May 7th at 8PM. Tickets are $15.08 and will be raising funds for Stupid Cancer, an org dedicated to “empowering adolescents and young adult cancer patients”.

Get get tix right here right now.

Natasha Vaynblat: Childless Freak (in LA) 5/21

April 22, 2024
News
los angeles comedy, natasha vaynblat, solo show, stand up comedy, ucb

Following a humdinger of a debut stand-up album, We’re All Dads Here, NYC’s Natasha Vaynblat is onwards to a brand new hour, this time focused on the beautiful idea of not having kids (should be such a more popular notion these days, to be honest).

And, as a bonus, Vaynblat will be in LA to work on this hour as a treat for Angelenos that don’t have access to seeing her playful wit in action on a nightly basis. So, on Tues. May 21st at UCB Franklin, Natasha will be doing the gorgeously named Childless Freak with a trio of splendid openers, Sam Taggart, Alexa Loftus, and Ashley Brooke Roberts. Tickets are only $10 and you ought to get them here.

Pick of the Day: Katrina Davis: Not Funny: A Collection of Stories and Untold Joke Origins (in LA) 4/5

April 1, 2024
News
katrina davis, los angeles comedy, solo show, stand up comedy, storytelling

It’s touching to see that Katrina Davis, though she has left LA for NYC, is going to be back in the City of Angels plenty for the foreseeable future. Davis was beloved in the LA scene and we have no doubt she’s making quick work of the NYC comedy scene.

Come this Friday, April 5th, Davis will be the main attraction at The Elysian with a very special hour show that mixes storytelling, stand-up, and illustration with the idea that those in attendance will get the back story on some of her bits.

Entitled Not Funny: A Collection of Stories and Untold Joke Origins, we’re sure that there will be more than plenty of laughs as well as plenty of cathartic feels throughout the entirety of the show. Tickets are $16 and you best go get them here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 207: Chloe Radcliffe & Doing a Solo Show About You Cheating

March 13, 2024
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
chloe radcliffe, solo show

Chloe Radcliffe has been taking radical honesty and capturing of the full breadth of the human experience to a new level with, rest assured, plenty of jokes, in her astounding solo show, CHEAT. Radcliffe shares, in the hour, an in-depth journey of her pattern of cheating and really getting into the nitty gritty of perhaps why it might be happening (and that’s she still human and is not solely defined by her faults). It’s a hysterical, beautiful, and heart-wrenching show that really needs to be seen and heard and we’re so lucky that we got to talk to Chloe on this week’s TCB Field Report all about what openly talking about cheating as the sole basis for a show (and doing it so well) is really like.

Follow Chloe @chloebadcliffe across socials and get tickets to her latest performance of CHEAT if you’re in LA on Tues. Mar. 26th @ 7:30PM.

Pick of the Day: Writing on the Stall (in NYC) 3/27-4/13

March 5, 2024
News
bathroom graffiti, caitlin cook, musical comedy, nyc comedy, solo show

Just as we got to do with Jacqueline Novak‘s lauded Get On Your Knees, we have had the esteemed privilege of seeing Caitlin Cook‘s brilliant conceived and developed musical solo show, Writing on the Stall, completely sourced from years and years collecting/seeing/cataloging images of bathroom graffiti.

Even from seeing bits of it projected on a makeshift screen on the rooftop level of a parking garage, Cook has had managed to beautifully span a hilarious emotional odyssey stitched together through sharpie-d and scratched non-sequiturs that has garnered acclaimed at the big time at Edinburgh Fringe as well as touring all throughout the U.S.

Cook and Writing on the Stall is getting another Off Broadway run that will stretch from Mar. 27th to Apr. 13th, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 9PM at the lovely Soho Playhouse in NYC. Tickets are $46.50 and you really REALLY not miss out on seeing the show if, somehow, you haven’t seen it already.

Pick of the Day: CHEAT (in LA) 3/3

February 23, 2024
News
cheat, chloe radcliffe, la comedy, solo show

While comedy certainly does have the power to demystify the things that we don’t necessarily want to talk about or deem unsavory and being vulnerable is certainly part and parcel to that, how vulnerable is any single comedian willing to get to shine a comedic light on what’s so often kept in the dark?

Well, one Chloe Radcliffe, in one of the most radical acts of honesty we’ve seen in a comedic performance, has put together a beautiful, heart-wrenching, and hilarious solo show about how she has cheated in almost every relationship she has ever been. It’s the rare piece of comedy (and, if we’re to really mull it over, art) that shows humanity in its entire spectrum, transgressions to transcendence and everything in between and a wondrous journey to show that people are more than they often great/awful things they do. Simply called CHEAT, it’s undoubtedly one of the best solo shows/hours we’ve seen in recent memory and you should definitely go watch it ASAP wherever it’s playing.

For Angelenos, you’ll have another chance come Sun. Mar. 3rd at 7PM at The Elysian. Tickets are $20 and you can (and should) go get them here right now.

Pick of the Day: Ian Farley: Oil & Water (in LA) 2/18

February 14, 2024
News
clown, Ian Farley, los angeles, solo show

While clowning is still a burgeoning scene here in LA, it very clearly has its stars (you’ve probably seen Natalie Palamides in something at this point).

As with any artistic scene, there are those next in line, those who have been upping and coming for quite some time and are, frankly, due for their time in the limelight.

Ian Farley is one such figure who is so devilishly good at clowning and, in particular, brilliant at wringing every single iota of a laugh out a bit. As such, you really ought to not miss when he puts on his solo show, a collection of painstakingly crafted characters, wonderfully called Oil & Water at The Lyric Hyperion this Sun. Feb. 18th at 9:30PM.

Tickets are only $12 and, honestly, it’s worth so much more than that. Go get ’em here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 201: Ian Farley & Coming Up with a Show on the Spot

January 31, 2024
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
clown, devising, Ian Farley, process, solo show

Not that this podcast is a stranger to taking big swings or chatting with characters that might as well be from another galaxy, but, for a podcast that ostensibly pulls back the curtain, we go above and beyond with this episode by devising a show with a comedian live on tape.

If you haven’t gathered in recent episodes, TCB’s Jake Kroeger is now also the Artistic Director at Lyric Hyperion and tapped the hysterical Ian Farley to do a show next month and captured the creative process of working out what the hell his show is going to be on a podcast. Ideally, coming up with this show is this crackling and fun (part of the reason we have Ian both on the pod and doing a whole show by himself).

Pick of the Day: Jack Tucker: Comedy Standup Hour (in NYC) 2/29-3/30

January 12, 2024
News
jack tucker, nyc comedy, parody, soho playhouse, solo show, stand up comedy, zach zucker

If you’re a loyal reader of what’s written here at TCB, you’ve probably seen us badger you about watching Stamptown, the wildest transcontinental comedy variety show in existence. Led by Jack Tucker, the rambunctious stand-up-comedy-uncanny-valley alter-ego of Zach Zucker, Stamptown somehow always pushes its own boundaries, joyfully going off the rails with the best clown, sketch comedy, stand-up, dance, music, etc. etc.

Now, Zuck—we mean Tucker has his very own solo endeavor getting a nice big run at The Soho Playhouse where he’ll get truly run amok with beautiful comedic chaos (as well as what must be the most sound cues of any comedy show of all time). Jack Tucker: Comedy Standup Hour will be running from the very end of February on the 29th through Mar. 30th, Wed.-Sat. (except for the 3/6 & 3/9). Tickets are $46.50 and you best go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Not That Bad (in LA) 1/11 & 1/14

January 10, 2024
News
catherine mccafferty, la comedy, not that bad, solo show

As we all stare off into the far reaches of what 2024 might be, there’s a lot to worry about both globally and the things that are happening right at this very moment right in front of us all. Catherine McCafferty‘s solo show covering a lot of the lowlights of her life, but done so with humor and grace in a way that beautifully shows what it’s like to be on the other side of the worst times of your life.

McCafferty already took this for a run at the world famous Edinburgh Fringe and is continue to fine tune it and it’s a special sort of thing that you shouldn’t miss out on. The two latest performances of Not That Bad are at the Lyric Hyperion on Thurs. Jan. 11th at 9:30PM and Sunday Jan. 11th at 7:30PM. Tickets are only $10 right now and you best go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Julian Velard Is In the Middle of Something (in LA) 12/10

December 1, 2023
News
julian velard, los angeles comedy, musical comedy, solo show

Julian Velard is many a thing including a masterful pianist with golden pipes with wit and panache to match. He’s also middle aged and in, well, the middle of figuring things out.

Part of figuring it out is doing an entire beautiful and hilarious and vulnerable and raw solo musical show about the whole ordeal of being in the middle of your life/getting your ducks in a row/figuring out how the hell the future is going to work out. We’ve seen the show and Julian hits a wonderful comedic and emotional nerve with his premise where something like This Is 40 or a deluge of sitcoms about being middle aged missed the mark.

So, don’t miss the next time Julian Is In the Middle of Something, which just happens to be pretty close to the middle of this month, Sun. Dec. 10th at 9:30PM at the Lyric Hyperion in fact. Tickets are $15 and you really ought to go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Jackie Johnson How To Find a Second Husband (in LA) 12/13

November 15, 2023
News
jackie johnson, los angeles comedy, solo show

We’ve all been on a journey over the last few years, haven’t we? It’s a question/statement so obvious that it’s borderline offensive (and dismissive of the million different ways in which the world feels like it’s going up in flames).

That said, the stories that people have lived through are often undeniably captivating and, if it’s someone who is undeniably hilarious and raw like Jackie Johnson (of Natch Beaut fame and a frequent hysterical UCB star in pre-pandemic days) sharing her story/solo show How To Get a Second Husband of being a divorcée (that will include stellar choreo from award winning choreographer Kathryn Burns) is something that we highly suggest you go see (also the early show sold out and a late show was added).

So, you best get your tickets here at $25 a pop and clear your calendar to be at The Broadwater for Wed. Dec. 13th for 9:30PM.

Pick of the Day: Alex Edeman: Just for Us (in LA) 11/10-11/26

November 3, 2023
News
alex edelman, dtla, just for us, los angeles comedy, mark taper forum, solo show, storytelling

Alex Edelman’s Just For Us is probably one of the most acclaimed live solo shows of this year (and last year) considering its several extensions Off Broadway and then ascending to Broadway. Edelman’s hilarious and captivating tale of sneaking into White Nationalists meetings as a Jewish person is already shot and scheduled to be released as a special, but it’s going on the road first.

One of Edelman’s first stops will be here in LA at the Mark Taper Forum in DTLA that, as far as comedy in recent memory goes, only Mike Birbiglia has played. It’s a big run, but don’t rest on your laurels to buy tickets because they’ll likely get bought up very, very fast.

So, Just For Us is set to run from:

1/10-11/26

Tues-Sat @ 8PM PT

Sat. matinee @ 3PM PT

Sundays @ 2PM PT & 7PM PT

*Dark on Thanksgiving

*No matinee on 11/11

*Fri. Matinee 11/26 @ 3PM PT

Tickets are $40-$150 and stop reading this go get them now right here.

Pick of the Day: MY DEAD WEDDING: A Funeral for my Wedding (in NYC) 10/28

October 23, 2023
News
chet siegel, nyc comedy, solo show, union hall

Long long ago, in a world before COVID and industry strikes, there was a thing called Above Average where came across the delightful, yet dark sketch comedy stylings of one Chet Siegel. Now, that we’re on the other side of those things (well, the SAG-AFTRA strike is still happening), Above Average isn’t around anymore and the entire world has been turned upside down, pulled inside out, and burned several times.

As such, Chet is continuing to develop her comedic solo show that is both a solo show and an “immersive nervous breakdown” centered on the concept of having a funeral for her wedding (Chet’s ex-fiance dumped her twice during the pandemic) and trying to get some semblance of how you get over anything. A funeral for a wedding sounds like the hysterically perfect name for this current chapter of history and has our interest more than peaked off of that concept alone.

Here’s Chet giving a bit of an explanation as she was developing this at Ars Nova.

A post shared by Ars Nova (@arsnovanyc)

If your tastes are on the dark side (of comedy) as well as getting into the feels mixed in with hard laughter, we’d urge you to shell out $15.64 and find your way to Union Hall on Sat. 10/28 at 5PM (guessing the dress code would be “darkest black tie possible”?) for Chet’s My Dead Wedding.

Pick of the Day: EDINBURGH POSTVIEW FESTIVAL (near LA) 10/15

October 5, 2023
News
edinburgh fringe, los angeles comedy, public displays of altadena, solo show

If you just so happen to not have several thousands of dollars lying around this Summer to head on to Edinburgh, Scotland for the world famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival, you might wonder how you’d ever get to have enough dough to ever actually catch even a bit of the hundreds upon hundreds of shows that descend upon the city in August every year.

Well, if you’re in LA, you’re in a bit of luck as many who have embarked to the Fringe (and subsequently made it back in one piece) are doing another exclusive performance of their shows in a place almost as mountainous as Edinburgh (Altadena). Yes, Public Displays of Altadena is having an entire day/night of LA based Fringe shows featuring the exuberant comedy and comedy adjacent talents of Mark Vigeant, Claire Woolner, Brianna Ahlmark, John Norris, George Aivaliotis, Maddie Widdoes, and Liz Toonkel.

Instead of $$$$, this Edinburgh Postview Festival will only run you $60 for the whole thing (or $10-$15 per show), which is such a grand deal. PDA is hosting this Edinburgh Postview Festival on Sun. Oct. 15th from 12PM to 10:30PM. Get more details, schedule, and, most importantly, tickets right here.

Pick of the Day: Live After Death: a comedy show about grief and loss! (in LA) 10/13 & 10/14

September 22, 2023
News
Ben Wasserman, live after death, los angeles comedy, solo show

The hysterical and poignant Ben Wasserman did get to bring his very special solo show, Live After Death, to LA to mix unfettered silliness with deep healing from grief and loss, but had to do it in a traditional theater, an atypical set up for his show which was largely performed at a funeral home.

Thankfully, Wasserman’s return to Los Angeles with Live After Death is going to happen at Death Doula LA, a different sort of family planning service that guides individuals and their families through the end of life. Wasserman’s show is special as is with truly getting you to have you double over laughing and also “feel all the feels” between absurd bits and cathartic sharing of stories and remembering of loved ones that we’ve lost. It will undoubtedly be something, even more so, that one shouldn’t miss at a venue that deals with death on a day-to-day basis.

Ben has Fri. Oct. 13th and Sat. Oct. 14th at 7:30PM set for two exclusive performances of Live After Death with LA comedy darlings Reshma Meister and Camirin Farmer opening the shows respectively. Tickets are $15 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: How to Start a Fire with Sydnee Washington (in NYC) 9/20

September 6, 2023
News
nyc comedy, solo show, storytelling, Sydnee Washington, union hall

Though Sydnee Washington has indeed returned to NYC, she is far from a prodigal daughter. It was wondrous having her comedic spirit in and around LA for her limited stint, but, alas, her heart is in New York and is at home.

To mark her momentous homecoming, Sydnee is putting up her fantastic solo show, How To Start a Fire, once again at Union Hall. For the uninitiated, yes, the title is literal (and a little metaphorical as well) and a damn great collection of stories from Sydnee’s early years leading up to the eponymous event.

Welcome Sydnee back to NYC and please enjoy/re-enjoy this solo show on Wed. Sept. 20th at 10PM. Tickets are $18.98 and you can and should go get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: Kyle Ayers-Hard to Say (in LA) 9/15

August 24, 2023
News
elysian theater, hard to say, kyle ayers, los angeles comedy, solo show, trigeminal neuralgia

With the coming and going of the Edinburgh Fringe, there has been a big wave of solo shows that have come through LA and NYC in preparation to do it almost every night for a month. Thus, we have seen dozens and dozens of solo shows and, as you’d imagine, we have our favorites.

Kyle Ayers, who has been one of the funniest people in LA for years now, has also had to deal with the Trigeminal Neuralgia, a brain disease so painful that it has been nicknamed “Suicide Disease” (as it is reportedly the disease with the highest suicide rate). Ayers, even though he still has to navigate his condition everyday, came up with an absolutely hysterical, gripping, and cathartic solo show, Hard to Say, around how this has affected everything in his life and how it seems like he’s just going to have to live with it.

We got to see a performance of it months ago and was floored from start-to-finish, both with laughter and tugging at heart strings.

Lucky for Angelenos that Kyle is doing his show again at The Elysian on Fri. Sept. 15th at 7:30PM with the marvelous Joel Kim Booster opening. Tickets are $15 and that’s such a novel price to see Ayers doing an astounding show about Trigeminal Neuralgia while still very much having it. Please go get them right now right here.

Pick of the Day: Arti Gollapudi Performs the Real Book Like a Real B*tch (in NYC) 8/8

August 3, 2023

Arti Gollapudi, joe's pub, musical comedy, nyc comedy, solo show, storytelling

One of the most marvelously spirited comedians in NYC, Arti Gollapudi, is bringing her past and present to the very immediate future in what should be a beaming delight of a raunchy, yet classy affair at NYC’s venerable Joe’s Pub.

For what she’s calling “Arti Gollapudi Performs the Real Book Like a Real B*tch“, Gollapudi will be doing jazz standards with some of her favorite musicians throughout the city (canteenkilla, Talk Bazaar, Syl Dubenion, and Koa Ho) while weaving in her stories of trying to find love and chronic uterus pain and everything else in between in the life and times of Arti. Very special guests El Kempner (Palehound) and Karolena Theresa will be joining her throughout the evening too.

So, get your best jazz attire, get your $15 tickets (plus 2 drink or 1 food item min.), and head to NoHo to the one and only Joe’s Pub on Tues. Aug. 8th at 7PM to catch what will likely be the most unforgettable night of jazz and comedy that you’ve seen in quite some time.

A spirited, hysterical performer, Mark Vigeant, has been making his mark on the LA comedy scene in the short time that he’s lived in Los Angeles. In fact, Vigeant is about to go international as he is taking his lauded solo show, Mark Pleases You, for his debut run at the renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

This week’s TCB Field Report gets into Mark’s long journey in taking his darkest moments and sourcing joy in the form of a vibrant, silly solo show and why you one should go across the planet to perform said show as much as you physically can.
