Pick of the Day: In Unit Laundry with Simon Gibson and M.K. Paulsen (in LA) Tuesdays Starting 7/19

Leading into 2020, it was a time where not only was there so much live comedy to go see, but one could treat themselves to seeing the very funny likes of Simon Gibson and M.K. Paulsen all the time. Having been roommates, doing a podcast together, being on a reality show about JFL, and more, Simon and M.K. are perhaps, LA comedy’s favorite odd couple.

Smack dab in the middle of 2022, we’re getting back to the volume of comedy that we had almost three years ago and part of that return is M.K. and Simon having a weekly stand-up showcase at the newly refurbished Lyric Hyperion. Called In-Unit Laundry, Simon and M.K. will gather their favorite comedy folks from the scene (and whatever good folks are in town) Tuesdays at 8PM PT at 2106 Hyperion Ave.

They’re kicking off this weekly run on Jul. 19th and tickets are only $10 if you buy them in advance here.

With an inaugural line-up of Joel Kim Booster, James Adomian, Kylie Brakeman, Solomon Georgio, Erik Rivera, and Steph Tolev, it’s a show that damn well better not miss.

Pick of the Day: Femmes the Rules (in LA) 12/14

Even though so much time has passed since the last Femmes the Rules, the live comedy show where men get interrupted, it seems as though, in 2021, that men haven’t learned to shut up when they need to be shutting up.
Thank goodness that Femmes the Rules is making a come back to feature female/non-binary comedians getting the full license to interrupt a male comedian during their set however they please (including a 3-strike rule), then get to do their set free of any interruptions. All hail Sammy Mowrey and Bailey Norton for bringing this crucial show from the pre-pandemic era all the way to The Airliner on Tues. Dec. 14th at 8PM PT.

On this first post-lockdown Femmes the Rules will be:

Molly Kearney and Mike Joyce
Holmes Holmes and Simon Gibson
Amy Silverberg and Danny Palumbo

Tickets are $5 right now, so go get ’em while you can right here.

Watch Trailer for “Inside Jokes”, Amazon’s Docu Series on Trying to Get JFL New Faces

For several years, a much sought after milestone for comedians was getting the title of being a Just For Laughs Montreal New Face. Though it’s a list intended largely for industry types, it has been established as a marker for who to watch out for, especially with stand-up.

Thus, comics compete intensely for the limited number of slots they hand out every year up in Montreal for the hope that they can call themselves a New Face whether they ends up being an actual big break or not (even if they’ve had a good amount of exposure and success already).

Inside Jokes follows a handful comics (including folks we really dig such as Simon Gibson, MK Paulsen, Rosebud Baker, and Robert Dean) on this journey and you can get a taste of it right here. It premieres on Amazon Prime starting on Fri., Nov. 30th.

Oh, if you want a spoiler to how ends up getting to be a New Face, here’s the list for your convenience.

In case you haven’t noticed in LA, there has been a lot of comics doing more extended sets for various submissions to networks or streaming services (or maybe just do an extended set because stage time is a precious commodity out here). That means a lot of our favorite comics in LA that don’t normally get to do a half hour or more are also doing a half-hour or even a hour coming up.

This includes:

Robert Buscemi taping an hour @ Lyric Hyperion Fri., Nov. 24 9PM FREE w/RSVP
Half hours from Dan Telfer, Brandie Posey, Lisa Curry, and Kyle Clark @ The Clubhouse 9PM Sat. Nov. 25 FREE
Half hours from April Richardson & Eliza Skinner @ UCB Franklin Sun. Nov. 26th 11PM $5
Half hours from Simon Gibson & MK Paulsen @ The Clubhouse Wed. Nov. 29th 8PM FREE
An extended set from Joe Kwaczala @ Nerdmelt Showroom Thurs. Dec. 7th 9PM $8 in adv., $10 at door

Go to all of these please. Links for more details and tickets above.

If you want to ring in 2017 at an indie comedy show, look no further than Backyard Bootlegs at Cafecito Organico in Silverlake. The likes of LA favorites like Brodie Reed, Erin Lampart, and Richard Bain will join hosts Simon Gibson and Devin Blake for a lovely night of stand-up.

Best of all, the show starts at 8PM this Saturday, so you won’t have to worry about the show being interrupted by the LA New Year’s countdown and/or you can make it to another party before 2017 arrives. More details here.

Forged from the fires of going up every night around LA over the last few years, Simon Gibson has made himself into a masterfully self-deprecating joy to watch.

Thanks to Honora, the rest of the world will now get to see Gibson via a stand-up special available on BitTorrent for free. It’s all above board; don’t worry.

Please enjoy it here.
