Pick of the Day: Festivus: Seinfeld Trivia Extravaganza & Airing of Grievances (in NYC) 12/23

December 19, 2023
News
festivus, nyc comedy, seinfeld, trivia

Festivus, the Seinfeld-ian holiday that’s inclusive of all the veritable Grinches during the holiday season, is on 12/23 (AKA the eve of Christmas Eve). It does strike us as strange that one of the most celebrated sitcoms of all time has its own holiday and that there are not more comedy shows that integrate it right around this time of year.

Thankfully, there’s, at the very least, a Seinfeld-themed trivia night that’s dedicated to Festivus. Head to Midtown Manhattan (a feat of strength unto itself?) to Slattery’s Midtown Pub at 5PM to not only test your Seinfeld depths of knowledge, but also enjoy a customary Airing of Grievances.

Reserve a spot (w/$20 item min.) for Festivus: Seinfeld Trivia Extravaganza & Airing of Grievances here.

TCB Debriefing 10/10/23: Joe Pera, Kiss Me Kosher Postponed, WGA Ratified, Matt Rogers Tour, The Thin Man, Seinfeld, Garbage Pail Kids,

October 10, 2023
News
brad pitt, comedy special, garbage pail kids, have you heard of christmas, joe pera, kiss me kosher, margot robbie, matt rogers, seinfeld, the thin man, wga

1. If you need a sense of peace, a sense of calm, some warmth, and a belief in humanity all delivered in the form of a comedy special, please look no further than Joe Pera’s brand new hour special Slow & Steady. Akin to pretty much everything Joe does, Pera shows a beautiful side to comedy that comes from a place of simplicity and a certain sense of worldly innocence as well as a cheeky self-awareness of his whole persona. Thankfully, Slow & Steady is streaming free on YouTube for you to enjoy over and over anytime you want.

2. Kiss Me Kosher, an irreverent rom com set in Tel-Aviv that has a secret Israeli/Palestinian romance has postponed its U.S. release (Deadline). Sadly, it’s probably going to be quite awhile before that sees a U.S./wider release.

3. The WGA overwhelmingly ratified their new contract with AMPTP (CNN) and thank goodness there is any sort of good news today at all.

4. Forget all your other holiday traditions because Matt Rogers: Have You Heard of Christmas? is going on tour in celebration of the Have You Heard of Christmas? album (which should be an instant holiday classic). Go get tickets here immediately because they’ll probably be sold out by the time the holiday season starts.

5. Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt’s production banners are in cahoots to remake the comedy classic The Thin Man (Variety). No word on casting, but we would be fine with a sort of Babylon reunion with Robbie and Pitt sharing top billing.

6. Jerry Seinfeld says something might be happening regarding the end of legendary eponymous sitcom Seinfeld (EW). Details are scarce beyond that, but maybe this will provide enough mishegoss to guarantee another season of Curb Your Enthusiasm as well.

7. There was an adaptation of cult favorite card series, The Garbage Pail Kids, with the likes of David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, and Josh Bycel in the works. With the WGA side of the strike over, the project appears to still be alive (Deadline). Keep the fingers crossed that it survives the other side of the strike.

8. We’ll leave you with this: now is a great reminder that the equation “tragedy + time = comedy” is true for bother audiences and the comedians.

Watch a Magnificent Tribute to the Elaine Dance from Seinfeld by Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Jacobson

Sure, this happened months ago and aired over a week ago, but the highly respected Priori Dance Company that Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer enlisted to do a high art tribute to Julia Louis Dreyfus’ famous Elaine dance on Seinfeld for JLD’s Mark Twain Prize ceremony is something that we wanted to make sure you absolutely knew about, just in case you didn’t.

It’s truly magical. Enjoy it here.

It’s a new episode of Between Two Ferns. You ought to know the drill by now for one of the Internet’s most beloved web series/anti-talk shows.

We will say that Galifianakis and co. take Jerry Seinfeld to task in pretty much every way possible (other than maybe torching a limited edition Porsche right in front of him). For a twist, there’s a cheeky contrast in tone with Cardi B.

See it for yourself here.

There are few guests on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee that go as far back with Jerry as Garry Shandling.

Pretty much every step of each their comedy careers was in sync from playing The Comedy Store to their own hit sitcoms. Thus, making a drive and a stroll down memory lane was pretty fantastic. This is actually one of the best episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

Chaz Stevens on Mission to Erect Gay Festivus Poles at State Capitols Across the U.S.

Just to hit the whole “a Festivus for the rest of us” message home, the Festivus pole has just gotten an upgrade.

Chaz Stevens is not only spreading the non-religious holiday celebration of Festivus, the celebration popularized by Seinfeld by erecting Festivus poles, but adding a disco ball and rainbow colors to it in support of gay rights.

So far, he’s actually gotten them put up in a handful of state capitols including the one in Oklahoma City, OK and we can definitely see this catching on.

Don’t be surprised if this becomes a popular holiday decoration soon.

Festivus Was a Real Thing Created by a Seinfeld Writer’s Dad

Though it wasn’t quite like the Festivus that we all have come to know and love.

Festivus is the holiday celebration that offers though that are put off by most other traditional holiday season celebrations incepted by Seinfeld several years ago. As it turns out, the celebration had source material in Seinfeld writer Dan O’Keefe’s father Daniel O’Keefe, which the imaginations of fellow writers Alec Berg and Jeff Schaeffer ran wild with.

Daniel O’Keefe did made up the inclusive Festivus, which did have an airing of grievances, but a much more sobering vibe than the Festivus presented on Seinfeld as there were no feats of strength.

Point to truth being stranger than fiction.

If there’s a real life Central Perk, this is a logical step for Hulu.

Over a week from now, Hulu will have an exhibition of a real apartment replicated after the one from Seinfeld as part of Hulu securing online streaming rights to every single episode of the legendary series starting Jun. 24th. Visitors will have a chance to look up close and around for a few days only.

To answer your question, you’ll also be able to slide into Jerry’s apartment like Kramer.

Anyone feel like Hulu and Netflix are amassing their armies for some sort of all out content war?

In a big, reportedly $130 million deal, Hulu will be exclusively offering all 9 seasons of Seinfeld on SVOD.

On top of that, they’re getting ready to unveil their highly anticipated comedy series “Difficult People” starring Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner, executive produced by Amy Poehler this Summer. This is all in addition to landing streaming rights to AMC shows and Empire.

We’re sure this is just the tip of the iceberg of what Hulu is trying to get going and the start of people trying to borrow people’s Hulu passwords.

The beloved holiday tradition created by legendary sitcom Seinfeld, Festivus, has grown steadily in popularity over the years.

There’s an entire site dedicated to it and the numerous traditions to observe such as the feats of strength. Now, Tumblr has put up their version of Christmas lights by making a Seinfeld-esque version of their logo and temporarily enabling you to have a Festivus Mode if you’re a Tumblr user, which enables the Seinfeld theme to play while you scroll.

For however many times we’ve heard Mariah Carey’s  All I Want For Christmas Is You played anywhere recently, we’re more than happy to get in the Festivus mood with some fun bass and synth.

The YouTube star Miranda Sings (created by Colleen Ballinger) was Jerry Seinfeld’s guest on the latest episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee and, besides the Super Bowl edition, is the closest thing to an episode of Seinfeld we’ve seen on the show (i.e. it gets pretty awkward over nothing but minutia).

After watching it, this episode could be entitled “The Eye Roll” in the universe of Seinfeld.
