Pick of the Day: Sarah Squirm (in LA) 9/14

September 7, 2022
News
sarah squirm

It wasn’t too long ago that Sarah Squirm was the talk of the town here in LA, dazzling crowds with her subversive, sarcastic, body-horror fueled comedy. Then, she got SNL and got to take that to a national level. Of course, that amounts to her having to relocate to NYC and seeing her less regularly out her in Los Angeles.

Thus, you should never pass up the chance when Sarah rolls into town and, as chance would have it, there are indeed a few tickets left for the late show that she’s has slated for Wed. Sept. 14th at Zebulon. The 7PM show is sold out, though you can sign-up for the waitlist, but there are tickets still available for 10PM at $18.54 a pop. Go get them right here right now or you will regret it for, perhaps, the rest of your life.

Sarah Squirm is returning to back to LA as part of the leg of her international Live & in the Flesh tour this year. Squirm will have just returned stateside from the UK and triumphantly take the stage with herself and all of her subversive grotesque hilarity at Zebulon, the last place she had a show in LA before she got brought up to the majors at SNL.

Wed. Sept. 14th is the date that you got to mark down for Sarah Squirm: Live & in the Flesh with a 7PM PT & 10PM PT show. The early show is already sold out with a wait list available for sign-up, but you can buy tickets for the late Sarah Squirm show at 10 for $18.60 right now right here. No matter which one you go for, you better act fast before you don’t have any chances at all to get tickets.

Pick of the Day: Sarah Squirm: Live + In The Flesh (in NYC) 2/11

You’ve seen her and been charmed by her take downs of Colin Jost and her wild characters on SNL for weeks now and, we hope like us, that one Sarah Squirm AKA Sarah Sherman has captured your veiny, throbbing, heart.

As her time is currently dedicated to Saturday Night Live, there might not be so much time where you can catch Sarah throw one of her spectacular body-horror-comedy extravaganzas centered around much of her stand-up and DIY multi-disciplinary art. You should really take any chance that you possibly can to catch her and whatever the hell she has up her beautiful patchwork-sewn or hand-painted sleeve.

Sarah will be Live + In the Flesh at NYC’s TV Eye on Fri. Feb 11th for an early 8PM ET & late 10:30PM show. Currently, tickets are sold out, but watch @sarahsquirm on socials closely as there could be tickets released or there be a stand-by line or even another show or shows added.

Pick of the Day: Rod Stewart Live: The Return of James Austin Johnson and Sarah Squirm (in LA) 10/27

News

It was only a few short weeks ago that LA comedy favorites James Austin Johnson and Sarah Squirm were plucked to be on SNL and blazing a trail ever since. SNL is taking a week off and letting them do whatever they want, which, thankfully, includes coming back to LA and getting in on shows here once more.

One of them will be the show that JAJ help found, Rod Stewart Live, now happening at Permanent Records Roadhouse in the Eastside’s Glassell Park this coming Wed. Oct. 27th at 8PM PT. They’ll be joined by an equally fantastic bill of Solomon Georgio and James Adomian and RSL co-hosts Sam Wiles and Zach Pugh.

The show is only $10 (proof of vaccination required). Go get your tickets here before they sell out (they usually sell out anyway and we bet this’ll go even faster.

Aristotle Athari, James Austin Johnson, and Sarah Sherman (AKA Sarah Squirm) Are the Newest SNL Cast Members

News
aristotle athari, james austin johnson, sarah sherman, sarah squirm, Saturday Night Live, snl

The latest additions to the comedy institution that is Saturday Night Live is three of the LA comedy scene’s favorites. Aristotle Athari who we hope you would know from Goatface Comedy and James Austin Johnson who we’d hope you know from him doing some of the best characters/impressions in comedy right now @shrimpjaj and Sarah Sherman (AKA Sarah Squirm) who we’d hope you know from being the ringleader of Helltrap Nightmare will be the three new featured players for this season of SNL that starts back up this Saturday, Oct. 2nd.

Athari, Johnson, and Sherman might be the most well rounded additions that SNL has had in awhile as they are all multi-disciplinary comedians that all excel doing stand-up, characters, and working behind the scenes to create some of the most unique and hysterical content out there. They’ve all got their own streak of absurdity that, in so many ways, is as beautiful as it is funny. Go down a YouTube/IG rabbit hole if you’re not familiar with them already.

We truly hope they get to weave their voices in making SNL something new and subversive and thrilling (like Bowen Yang has gotten to do in the last year).

Look for their debut on SNL this Saturday, Oct. 2nd at 11:30PM ET/8:30PM PT on NBC (and streaming on Peacock).

Welcome to the cast!

Pick of the Day: The Sarah Vaccine Live + In the Flesh (in LA) 9/23

September 6, 2021
News
brain dead studios, courtney pauroso, dynasty handbag, jamel johnson, la comedy, maylee todd, natalie palamides, sarah squirm, sarah vaccine

Sarah Squirm‘s epic, delightfully twisted short, The Sarah Vaccine, is getting it’s very own in-person night, which is perfect for all of us waiting for that booster shot.

Squirm will be “IN THE FLESH” as will a fantastic line-up of comedians and performers from every freaky little corner in LA. That’ll include Jamel Johnson, Natalie Palamides & Courtney Pauroso, music from Maylee Todd, and a Dynasty Handbag original video (and there might be more to come). This sure-to-be-never-forgotten evening will take place at Brain Dead Studios on Fairfax, which rose from the long smoldering ashes of Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theatre on Thurs. Sept. 23rd at 8PM PT.

Tickets are $14, all said and done, and you really best get them here.

Pick of the Day: HELLTRAP NIGHTMARE (in LA) 8/28

July 16, 2021
News
helltrap nightmare, la comedy, sarah squirm, zebulon

THE world’s premier horror comedy extravaganza known as HELLTRAP NIGHTMARE is crawling out from the cocoon it has been quarantining in and putting up its first show in so, so very long.

HELLTRAP NIGHTMARE’s ringleader Sarah Squirm will be leading off the show once again in its new-ish home, Zebulon, between Atwater and Frogtown. Throughout lockdown Squirm and HELLTRAP NIGHTMARE put on several stacked variety comedy live-stream fundraisers that were probably some of the virtual shows throughout the entirety of quarantine.

All these months later, on Sat. Aug. 28th w/doors at 8PM PT, all the cleverly engineered and devised grotesque body horror and socio-political humor will rise once more to all of our collective enjoyment in what sure as hell feels like the end times.

Tickets are on sale now for $12.30 and you can and very, very much should go get them here.

Please Enjoy Sarah Squirm’s Hysterical Grotesque Voyage “The Sarah Vaccine” (and Also Get Actually Vaccinated)

America currently hovers at just over 48% fully vaccinated against COVID-19 despite Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson vaccines being readily available to the majority of Americans at this very moment.

Rather than obsess over the reality of science and the disparity of vaccine hesitancy (especially in the face of lack of access to the most effective vaccines in several dozens countries around the globe), why don’t you dive into the wildly absurd, marvelously horrifying, and hilarious world of Sarah Squirm’s latest work, “The Sarah Vaccine”? We could go into lurid detail about it, but we’ll let you just enjoy the 13 minute ride (which, if you love I Think You Should Leave, we think you’ll love).

Why worry about protecting yourself against one of the deadliest viruses in our lifetime when you can go out with a really messy bang? Find out with watching The Sarah Vaccine, fresh from Means.TV, the very first worker owned streaming service.

Also, seriously, get vaccinated against COVID-19 if you haven’t already. Cases are already ticking back up worldwide.

*NOTE: if you have to go back into the office to work for some reason, you should probably go watch this in your car on break.

Pick of the Day: The Big One (in LA) 7/2

June 28, 2021
News
broderick baumann, Carly Kane, comedy show, Holmes Holmes, la comedy, Meg Indurti, Molly Kearney, sarah squirm, will miles

The grand tradition of house shows in LA is alive and well and ever burgeoning. There’s a whole crop of Chicago comics that just moved to the fair city of Los Angeles and are already getting a house show going in an increasingly hip part of town, Highland Park.

Called The Big One, it is set to happen the first Friday of the month (and hopefully not accompanying “the big one” earthquake?) and the inaugural show is set for Fri. Jul. 2nd at 7PM PT thanks to Meg Indurti, Molly Kearney, Carly Kane, and Broderick Baumann. Their first line-up will that includes lots of folks from the Paris of the Midwest that have made their home West including Holmes Holmes, Will Miles, and Sarah Squirm.

Tickets are $15. Address will be provided upon purchase. Go get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: Sarah Squirm + River L. Ramirez + Zhe Zhe 6/21

June 18, 2021
News
brooklyin, ny comedy, river l ramirez, sarah squirm, zhe zhe

Recently, we overheard an audience member comment that Sarah Squirm‘s comedy is perfect for the tenor of the times. Honestly, her comedy has been perfect for the zeitgeist for years now and her ultra-sarcastic, meta, wildly colorful, horror-core, anti-establishment, hellbent feminist humor is even more on point these days.

Thus, if you’re in NYC, you should get yourself to The Bell House this coming Mon. Jun. 21st at 7:30PM ET. That is the date and time to catch Sarah’s very special evening in Brooklyn. She’ll be joined by other boundary pushing comedic luminaries, River L. Ramirez and the band Zhe Zhe. Tickets are only $20 and, while it’s a full vaccinated event, there will be no distancing, so you can enjoy being packed like the most squished sardines at a comedy venue like you used to do.

Go get your tickets right now right here.

Pick of the Day: Safe Housing 4 Nori Reed 9/5

News
benefit show, jes tom, Jessica Henderson, Joe Castle Baker, kate berlant, lgbtq, Meg Stalter, naomi ekperigin, nori reed, patti harrison, safe housing, sarah squirm, Spike Einbinder, trans lives matter

Nori Reed is a great comedian that blessed LA with her presence in moving down from SF not too long ago. She is also a trans woman who, tragically, is in need of safe housing due to being forced out earlier this month by a bigot she was living with.

So, there is a big benefit live-stream comedy show next month that aims to raise enough money to help her live and thrive in a space that she deserves. Safe Housing 4 Nori Reed will take place on Sat. Sept. 5th at 8PM PT/11PM ET and feature a terrifically stacked line-up of Kate Berlant, Patti Harrison, Naomi Ekperigin, Meg Stalter, Spike Einbinder, Sarah Squirm, Joe Castle Baker, Jes Tom, Jessica Henderson, and more TBA.

You can get more details on the show and where to donate here and in the flyer below.

Pick of the Day: Weirdo Night with Dynasty Handbag 8/30

News
blasia discoteca, dynasty handbag, hedia maron, Morgan bassichis, patti harrison, sarah squirm, smiling beth, weirdo night, zebulon

The beloved Weirdo Night with Dynasty Handbag at Zebulon is doing a virtual edition of their monthly gathering of all sorts of weirdo performers from all sorts of wondrous corners of performance (though it’s mostly in and around comedy). The live-stream will be in support of the performers on the show as well as Zebulon, which is probably still one of LA’s hippest venues after all these months in lockdown.

For this virtual edition of Weirdo Night, the line-up includes:

  • Blasia Discoteca
  • Hedia Maron
  • Morgan Bassichis
  • Patti Harrison
  • PonySweat
  • Sarah Squirm
  • Smiling Beth

It’s one of the most uniquely, splendid nights in all of LA, which is something we don’t say lightly. This latest Weirdo Night is set for Sun. Aug. 30th at 7PM PT/10PM ET. Go get tickets for $22.60 here.

Pick of the Day: Comedy for Navajo & Hopi COVID Relief 5/17

May 15, 2020
News
benefit event, brian bahe, comedy show, dan licata, hopi, jes tom, jo firestone, larry owens, navajo, sarah squirm

Though vastly underreported, one of the hardest hit groups by the COVID-19 in America is Native Americans. For many tribes, their reservations are vastly underserved and lacked many essential resources and services without threat of a pandemic including running water, access to medical services, and even a scarcity of grocery stores.

Of the many, many causes you can support, this might be a good one to give your money to. And, as luck we have it, you can specifically support COVID-19 relief for the Navajo Nation and Hopi Reservation via joining in for a splendid evening of live-streamed, innovative comedy.

This Comedy for Navajo & Hopi COVID Relief features some of most dynamic comedians around such as Larry Owens, Jo Firestone, Sarah Squirm, Dan Licata, Jes Tom, and host/event organizer Brian Bahe. A line-up like this will give you a night you will never forget as there’s no real telling what they’ll do, but, whatever it may be, it’s going to be like nothing you’ve seen before.

So, please support the Navajo and Hopi and enjoy what should be one hell of a comedy show for this benefit on Sunday at 5PM PT/8PM ET. Tickets are $10-$30. Please go get them here.

SYFY’s Magical Girl Friendship Squad Has Quite the Cast

May 14, 2020
News
ana gasteyer, anna akana, christine baranski, eric bauza, helen hong, magical girl friendship squad, manny jacinto, matteo lane, quinta brunson, sarah squirm, syfy

(via Deadline)

Before we even get into the series’ premise, for something that was part of a late night animation block on SYFY that’s now getting upgraded into its own short-form series, it has a pretty stacked cast:

The series leads are Quinta Brunson and Anna Akana along with regulars Ana Gasteyer and Matteo Lane.

Recurring characters will be voiced by Christine Baranski, Manny Jacinto, Helen Hong, Eric Bauza, and Sarah Squirm/Sherman.

Guest voice stars will include Jason Mantzoukas, Paget Brewster, Vella Lovell, Jamie Loftus, and Patti Harrison.

Multiple characters will be voiced by Stephanie Sheh (Sailor Moon), Taylor Ortega (Kim Possible) and Daisy Hobbs ( Broadway’s Aladdin)

Pretty swell for a show that only has six 15 minutes episodes ordered, right?

With such a cast, we’re very, very intrigued to seem them in an anime comedy that has “two young women, Alex (Brunson) and Daisy (Akana), who are destined to save the Universe…as soon as they figure out how to pay their rent.”

This could raise the profile of SYFY and their late night Adult-Swim-ish animation block TZGZ where Kelsey Stephanides’ Magical Girl Friendship Squad got its start. It also could further SYFY’s reach into comedy, an area they’ve been seemingly flirting on and off with over the years whether it be with the sci-fi/pop culture series Reactor or the genre bending Happy starring a deranged Christopher Meloni.

We have no doubt that animation will be a big part of new (and old) shows and content that gets made while this pandemic continues on and, as such, we like seeing things like Magical Girl Friendship Squad be part of SYFY’s programming slate.

Sarah Squirm and her Helltrap Nightmare gang (Scott Egleston, The Shrimp Boys-Luke Taylor, Wyatt Fair and David Brown) has charmed us for a number of years now (so much that she has made our 100 Best List in 2017 and 2018).

Her mastery of blending the grotesque and the comedic is something to behold (and so damn funny). Helltrap Nightmare became and stayed a cornerstone show for comedy that was “out there” in Chicago as you can read in a lovely farewell piece in the Chicago Tribune.

So, we’re thrilled to her that she’s making the move to LA and bringing all of Helltrap Nightmare with her, starting with a date at Dynasty Typewriter. Please go get your tickets now for $10 before they kick up to $15 on the day of.

Sarah Squirm, the ringleader of comedy collective Helltrap Nightmare, does her group proud with a full fledged Adult Swim infomercial that summons her fluid and hair covered imagination and wit to give a “modest proposal” for what the ideal woman should look like.

Even though you’re probably not working right now because of the holidays, we’ll still give you a NSFW warning (though if your work is down for taking the patriarchy they might be cool with it) and a recommendation to perhaps not eat or have just eaten before watching this. The gross out humor is in peak form here and used expertly.

Though Halloween will be over, you can keep the spirit alive with Chicago’s own Helltrap Nightmare, a surrealist, horror comedy show (seemingly in the same oozing vein of The Heart, She Holler) coming to the Lyric Hyperion next month.

Also, it might be a perfect night for the show as it’ll be exactly a year to the day after, well, you know, the 2016 election was over.

The line-up includes:
-host Sarah Squirm, The Shrimp Boys, and Scott Egleston, all from Chicago
-Ruby McCollister from NYC
-LA’s own Jamie Loftus, Bruce Bundy, and Lyra Hill.

Tickets are $10 and you can (and should, if you dare) get them here.
