Looks Like Randall Park Has a Pretty Damn Good Directorial Debut with “Shortcomings”

June 16, 2023

If you were in around Channel 101 in the early 2010s, chances are you got to enjoy one Randall Park in any number of absurdist parodies of procedurals or some other genre defying short form series that got voted on week after week.

Park has since hit the big time with fronting Fresh Off the Boat for six seasons and even showing up in the MCU. Now, Park is taking next step up with his very first feature as a director with Shortcomings, an adaption of the graphic novel of the same name by Adrian Tomine. It has all the makings of a delightful, incredibly nuanced rom com, perhaps in the vein of the brilliant Elaine May, by following the romantic quests of three friends, two of whom are supposedly an item, that ponder the blurry edges of Asian American identity.

Park has a cracking cast to play with that includes Justin H. Min, Sherry Cola (who is going to have a banner 2023 with this and Joy Ride), and Ally Maki. See for yourself how Randall Park might just be on to a career in the director’s chair with Shortcomings with the official trailer here.

See the Full Breadth of Big Mouth’s Human Resources In Its First Full-Length Trailer

It was kind of the tease of the last season of Big Mouth that there is more to the world of Hormone Monsters and Shame Wizards than what we’ve seen terrorize or inspire the human teens going through the nightmare that is puberty. Thus, that will be the core of the spin-off series Human Resources.

The world of Human Resources will explore all sorts of Depression Kitties, Logic Rocks, Grati-Toads, and much much more and how off-the-rails their world is as well. Per usual with Big Mouth (or shall we say the Big Mouth Cinematic Universe), it’s stacked with a bright, shining, star studded voice cast that includes Aidy Bryant, Nick Kroll, Maya Rudolph, Brandon Kyle Goodman, David Thewlis, Randall Park, Keke Palmer, Lupita Nyong’o, Rosie Perez, Ali Wong, Helen Mirren, Henry Winkler, Janelle Monáe, and Hugh Jackman.

Get a full, rollicking taste of what that’s all going to be like (maybe even more raunchy than Big Mouth?) in this trailer here, then look for all episodes to drop on Netflix on Fri. Mar. 18th.

In support of the wonderful organization Young Storytellers (a group dedicated to sharing the stories of young people), The Biggest Show returns once more to the Theatre at Ace Hotel to have some of the brightest stars including Randall Park, Chelsea Peretti, Max Greenfield, and Kaitlin Olson acting out scripts written by fifth graders.

Randall Park Forms Production Company, Imminent Collision, and Signs First-Look Deal With 20th Century Fox TV

This is good news on a couple of counts.

1) Randall Park, along with company partners Michael Golamco and Hieu Ho, are out to “comedy-forward stories from Asian American perspectives for all audiences”. This very well may be the shot in the arm that Asian representation in mainstream media needs.

2) We first came across Randall Park at a little thing called Channel 101, a home for fiercely indie, short form TV for several years now, started by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab eons ago (it would seem). It’s wonderful to see him rise up to having his own production banner and we’ll be intrigued to see if any of that weird goodness from Channel 101 will find its way to Imminent Collision.

With all of that in mind, we can’t wait to see what Imminent Collision is cooking up for us all.

Watch “Art Prison” From Paul Isakson and Tom Kauffman, the Latest Adult Swim Special

Paul Isakson and Tom Kauffman as well as director Danny Jelinek have been responsible for some of the best stuff on Channel 101 over the years (including Everything, Sex Teenagers).

Now, they’ve got a full fledged TV pilot in the form of an Adult Swim TV special called Art Prison. Of course, it’s a show about a prison specifically designed for artists.

It’s wonderfully ridiculous, meta, and so damn funny as well as tangentially commenting on art, art criticism, the prison industrial complex, storytelling etc. Also, if you’re a big fan of Fresh Off the Boat’s Randall Park, he’s playing the lead by the way.

So, give it a watch and enjoy on AdultSwim.com here.

Ali Wong and Randall Park Will Star in a Rom Com Feature That They Co-Wrote for Netflix

Ali Wong and Randall Park Will Star in a Rom Com Feature That They Co-Wrote for Netflix

This romantic comedy will follow a bit of a star crossed lovers archetype as both protagonists, though in love with each other, grow up in very different circumstances.

What has us excited is the possibility of Ali bringing her comedic sensibilities that you saw on her Netflix special, Baby Cobra, and Randall bringing his from Channel 101 to a modern romantic comedy. This project will be co-written by Grimm staff writer and playwright Michael Golamco as well, which could add yet another unique flavor here.

With the creative latitude one might get at Netflix, such a unique rom com, whatever that may be, could be very possible.

When you think of Michael Bolton doing a TV special for Valentine’s Day, there are a certain set of images that come to mind.

However, when you add Comedy Bang! Bang! and The Lonely Island into the mix, you get a sort of doubling down on the man, the myth, and the legend that is Michael Bolton.

See what CBB and The Lonely Island teaming up with Bolton actually looks like in the trailer for Michael Bolton’s Big, Sexy Valentine’s Day Special.

If that already has you going, you can go watch the whole thing on Netflix right now.

Seeso’s newest series (yep, they’re keeping the brand spankin’ new content rolling) Hidden America with Jonah Ray finally has a preview. When first seeing various images of it, it does indeed look like any one of those dozens of travel shows that fill up hours of cable TV programming.

Yet, there’s something a little off in this preview clip as Fresh Off The Boat’s Randall Park is running a new “vegan” restaurant.

We can’t wait for more mischief like this to start streaming on Thursday, June 2nd on Seeso.

Scheer-RL Visits Casey Wilson and Eminem’s First Time on TRL and That Time P. Diddy Tried To Run a Marathon

Paul Scheer’s recreation of some of the craziest episodes of MTV’s Total Request Live continues on Scheer-RL with awkward conversations between host Carson Daly and guests who had, at the time, never been on TRL before like Celine Dion and Eminem paired with Mark Wahlberg. There was also a time where P. Diddy ran on a treadmill during an interview in preparation for running a marathon.

On top of that, Casey Wilson plays Celine Dion, Terry Crews and Katie Lowes play P. Diddy and Britney Spears, and Randall Park and Joe Lo Truglio play Eminem and Mark Wahlberg, which turns out to be as ridiculous and great as you think it would be.

Randall Park Talks Playing Kim Jong-un and “Fresh Off The Boat”

The international incident surrounding The Interview largely put James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg in headlines for a few weeks. However, not nearly enough was said of the man who played the North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, Randall Park.

He now plays one of the stars on ABC’s Fresh Off The Boat and you’ve probably seen him on various Channel 101 shows,

He chats with Paul F. Tompkins on the latest episode of Speakeasy about what he went through with The Interview as well as being in the race-barrier breaking Fresh Off The Boat.

Michaela Watkins, Randall Park, Lake Bell, Paul Scheer, and More Join “Wet Hot American Summer” Series at Netflix

It’s fantastic that almost the entire original cast of Wet Hot American Summer is returning to do the upcoming Netflix series.

It’s also pretty great that they’ll have some new “members” with some of indie comedy’s favorite players including Michaela Watkins, Randall Park (who you saw as Kim Jong-Un in The Interview), Lake Bell, John Slattery, Jayma Mays, Paul Scheer, and Rob Huebel.

It would almost seem that the first poster alone for this new Wet Hot American Summer will be barely able to contain this even bigger, great ensemble cast.

“The Interview” Gets a New Trailer with More Kim Jong-Un

Despite the declarations by North Korea against The Interview starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, there is a brand new trailer today that the North Korean government will not likely be happy with either since more of their current leader Kim Jong-Un is featured.

We couldn’t care less what North Korea thinks about it. as we get to see more of Randall Park, who we hope you’ve seen in Channel 101, Newsreaders, Veep, and so much more, plays the role Kim Jong-Un.

Give it a watch here.
