Mark Hamill, Neil Patrick Harris, Jack Black, Bill Hader, Joel McHale, and Jerry Seinfeld Might Guest Star in New MST3K

The likeliness that this will happen beyond MST3K creator Joel Hodgson getting interest from the names above probably will be greater if you donate in the final 30 hours of their Kickstarter campaign.

On top of the amazing cast and guest writers that Hodgson has announced, Joel has played what will is, we’re guessing, his final card before the Kickstarter campaign to revive Mystery Science Theater 3000 finishes.

Indeed, Jack Black, Mark Hamill, Neil Patrick Harris, Bill Hader, Joel McHale, and Jerry Seinfeld have expressed interest and Joel has even called out to the likes of Amy Poehler, Amy Schumer, Lily Tomlin, and Tina Fey to come on the show if they’d like.

We’ll all have a better picture of what the status of the guest star list will be for MST3K when the Kickstarter ends. By the way, they have reached their 9 episode goal and are shooting for their final stretch goal of $5.5 million. As of this post, they’re at $4,524,412 with less than a day and half to go.

Help them reach 12 full episodes here.

Dan Harmon, Justin Roiland, Dana Gould, and More to Guest Write for MST3K Revival

So, make the 12 episode goal happen already.

As if having the perfect cast of Jonah Ray, Baron Vaughn, Felicia Day, Hampton Yount, and Patton Oswalt wasn’t a cherry on top of Mystery Science Theater 3000 coming back, Joel Hodgson announced this morning that they’ll have a stellar guest writing staff:

Here’s a list of writers who have already agreed to come help out:

  • DAN HARMON, the incredible mind who created Community, hosts the Harmontownpodcast, and co-creator of the very funny Rick & Morty.
  • JUSTIN ROILAND, the other creator of Rick & Morty, as well as a very talented voice actor/comedian/artist, and a huge MSTie.
  • ROB SCHRAB, an original remote writer for MST3K, co-founder of the seminal Channel 101… and now, director of the next Lego Movie.
  • NELL SCOVELL, a long-time collaborator and friend, will be “in the house” too. She’s currently writing on the The Muppet Show but has worked on The Simpsons, Newhart andIt’s Garry Shandling’s Show, among others.
  • ERNIE CLINE, the New York Times best-selling author of Ready Player One, which will soon be a movie from Steven Spielberg! If you’ve read RP1, you know how good Ernie is with cultural references.
  • PAT ROTHFUSS, the New York Times best-selling author of The Name of Wind, has offered to have a “story breakfast” with me and go over “story beats” for the next series… and a few of you can join us!
  • PAUL & STORM, the hilarious musical act, W00tstock founders and stars, musical contributors to Despicable Me 2, my good friends and the hosts for Friday’s live “Final Countdown Telethon” will be contributing riffs and some special music!
  • DANA GOULD, the brilliant comedian and former Simpsons writer, who will also probably appear on camera as well for a cameo or two. But actually, that gets into the area of our Guest Cameos, which is a topic I want to save for tomorrow.
  • ROBERT LOPEZ, the EGOT-winning songwriter from Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon andFrozen, has offered to write some original songs for us!

The main writing staff was handpicked by Hodgson and, like pretty much everything with this revived MST3K, he was glad to bring in new blood. He added in this announcement:

So, our next staff writers are mostly people I’ve met in my travels, who I thought were funny and who have a knack for movie riffing. They come from all walks of life:

  • One is a teacher at a Montessori school,
  • One works in a bookstore,
  • One does graphics for a college,
  • One is in advertising,
  • One writes for a women’s online magazine,
  • One has a local public radio show,
  • One does IT for a design firm…

For the MST3K loyal, Joel also has got you covered:

Pretty cool, huh? I’m excited to have so many new faces and voices helping out. But I also want to make sure it’s not “too” new – you know, even as the show changes, I want to make sure we’re honoring MST3K’s past.

So, like I said, we’ve now made offers to all of MST’s original writers. While it seems like most of them won’t be available to join us, at least for now, I still hope they’ll decide to join us later. We’ll always be glad to have them back, even if it’s just for an episode or two when they can spare some time.

And actually, I’m happy to tell you that a few MST veterans have agreed to come back and “Pitch” in – not just as writers, but in other creative departments too – to make sure MST3K still has the spirit of the little cowtown puppet show you know and love:

  • CHARLIE ERICKSON,or, as he’s now known in the international DJ scene, Chuck Love, was the musical genius behind the original MST3K theme song, as well as the arranger of the haunting “MST3K Love Theme.” Charlie will be back to work on some new arrangements for us… and hopefully some new music, too!
  • BEEZ McKEEVER, MST3K’s original “Prop Diva,” will return to design special costumes for the bots. (Watch for her special line in the credits: “Robot Fashions created by Miss Beez of Duluth!”)
  • CRIST BALLAS, our original MST3K hair and makeup designer – and a long time friend – will also be joining us in that department, as well as plying his real trade: creating Academy Award-winning special effects makeup!

And finally…

  • PAUL CHAPLIN – old “Pitch” himself! – the veteran writer (over 144 MST3K episodes!) will be back demonstrate his mastery of “the craft we call riff”… and more important, to show the newer MST3K writers how we did it back in the day!

As it stands now, the Kickstarter for MST3K has raised $4,190,969 and are almost at its 9 episode goal of $4.4 million. There’s only 56 hours to go (just over two days) and it’d be great, especially with all the above info, if they could get to the $5.5 million goal so there will be 12 new feature length episodes.

Back MST3K here.

If you’ve been further wondering what Baron Vaughn as Tom Servo and Hampton Yount as Crow T. Robot might sound like when in action for the new Mystery Science Theater 3000, look no further than their “leaked auditions” for Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Funny or Die.

As we suspected, they look like they’re going to do just fine.

Well, that didn’t take long from when we first posted about it this morning.

Yep, the goal of $3,300,000 was just surpassed moments ago and there will be at least 6 new episodes of the new MST3K.

The cast of the new Mystery Science Theater 3000, as it stands now, will have Jonah Ray as host, Felicia Day as Mad, Hampton Yount as Crow, Baron Vaughn as Servo, and, now, the one and only Patton Oswalt as an evil henchmen. More specifically, series creator Joel Hodgson announced that Patton is set to be TV’s Son of TV’s Frank who will be reporting to Kinga Forrester (Felicia Day).

That’s pretty stellar and we have no idea why a network wouldn’t get behind this.

Still, we can have 12 episodes of MST3K if the $5.5 million goal is reached by Dec. 11th.

The MST3K Revival Has Almost Reached Its 4-6 Episode Goal on Kickstarter

Hodgson and company have raised of $3,190,406 of $3,300,000 as of this post.

Ultimately, so many of us would like to see over $5.5 million raised for the new Mystery Science Theater 3000 in order to see 12 episodes featuring Jonah Ray, Baron Vaughn, Hampton Yount, Felicia Day, and a yet to be announced “evil henchmen”.

The Kickstarter campaign is inching closer to that goal, but it’s even closer to the 2nd tier goal of making 6 new MST3K episodes. There are 11 days left on the campaign and given how fast people contributed in the first go around of Joel Hodgson’s Kickstarter launch, we’re sure this is definitely within the realm of possibility.

FYI, there are only two $400 donation packages left where you can get a personalized voicemail from the new MST3K crew. Get in on all of it here.

We’re going to venture a guess that both the MST3K loyal and newcomers to Mystery Science Theater 3000 will be pleased with this news.

As the Kickstarter to bring back MST3K has already reached its initial goal and speeds towards its stretch goals, creator Joel Hodgson has announced the folks that will being playing the roles of Mad, Crow T. Robot, and Tom Servo as well go into some detail over the dynamics of this new iteration of MST3K.

Earlier today, Joel sent the update out that Felicia Day will be playing Mad (specifically Kinga Forrester, the daughter of Dr. Clayton Forrester), Hampton Yount will be filling the role of Crow T. Robot, and Baron Vaughn will be the next Tom Servo.

With Jonah Ray as the host, this almost rounds out a pretty swell cast, but, there seems to be a new role for an evil henchmen waiting to be announced.

Based off of who he got so far, we’re sure Joel has got someone great lined up for that role and that’s all the more reason that the Kickstarter should raise as much as it can to make as much new MST3K as possible.

The Return of MST3K Is Officially Funded and Jonah Ray Will Be Its New Host

Yep, this all makes sense to us.

Only a few days after Mystery Science Theater 3000 creator Joel Hodgson announced a Kickstarter campaign to bring back MST3K, the $2 million goal to make 3 brand new episodes of the show has been reached.

With thousands of dollars pouring in literally by the minute, reaching the original goal was inevitable. Now, with 25 days left on the campaign, the stretch goal of $5.5 million for 12 new episodes of MST3K seems very attainable.

The other bit of great MST3K news should even make it seem more enticing to have more and more new feature length episodes.

Announced this morning, Jonah Ray will be the new host of the new MST3K, complete with jumpsuit and all. This is a pretty fitting choice given that Jonah’s a huge MST3K fan as well as having the hosting thing down per Nerdist podcasts and The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail.

So, knowing all of that, please keep contributing to the campaign as much as possible to make this new season of MST3K as big as possible.

Paul Feig’s Other Space, his upcoming Yahoo series, is starting to shape up as it’s gathered up a great cast in Joel Hodgson and Trace Beaulieu from a famous comedy series set in space, Mystery Science Theater 3000, in addition to a great bunch in Eugene Cordero, Neil Casey, Milana Vayntrub, Conor Leslie, Bess Rous, and Karen Soni.

Feig is going to delve into what it would be like if man explored most of the universe is the type, which leaves plenty of room for echoes of Undeclared and Freaks and Geeks.

We’re absolutely looking forward to this when it comes around next year.

National Geographic Is Having Rifftrax Riff on April Fools’ Day

You read that right. The National Geographic Channel is going to having some of it’s programming commented or, more appropriately, riffed on by none other than riff masters from Rifftrax comprised of former members of MST3K.

So, if you’re not busy pulling a prank on someone else, you should probably watch this on April Fools’ Day.
