Pick of the Day: The Improvised Shakespeare Company (in LA) 8/14

August 3, 2021
News

The fate of improv, as things are opening back up and vaccinated audiences and performers are finding their ways back to each other, is still quite foggy. Stand-up, with only one performer on stage, was slightly easier to navigate when it come to having safety protocols, but having a whole improv team of people that were often going to be right next to each other (if not outright embracing or jostling one another) takes on a whole other level of consideration for COVID-19 measures when doing live shows.

Fortunately, we’re at a point where, as mentioned before, there is a way forward, which means we’ll be able to see the likes of the astounding feats of The Improvised Shakespeare Company. An entire troupe dedicated to making a Shakespearean play hilariously out of thin air while using the Bard’s own particular language has seen The Improvised Shakespeare Company around the globe (and even have Sir Patrick Stewart sit in with them from time to time) and find a home as the prestigious Largo at the Coronet Theatre.

So, they are gearing to returning to the Largo stage this month, specifically on Sat. Aug. 14th at 7PM PT & 9:30PM PT to dazzle us all again and you shouldn’t miss out. The $46 ticket ($35 plus $11 service fee) might just be worth it. Go get them before they inevitably sell out here.

Largo at the Coronet Theatre Will Offer Limited Run of Pre-Taped Shows Starting Next Month

The venerable Largo at the Coronet Theatre, like every other live performance venue in the LA area, is still prohibited from putting on shows indoors with a live audience. Largo has been lucky enough to have episodes of Conan tape at the theatre as a way to have both Conan record his episodes in a theater  and support Largo when they have no ticket sales coming in.

Having had more than a few weeks of Conan performing live, they’ve opted to put together some live performances of their own in their beautiful, rustic theatre.

Per Largo’s mailing list:

Following health and safety protocols, we have been shooting intimate sets by some of our favorite singer-songwriters and performers, and we cannot wait to share these with you!

Our goals here are simple and align with the mission we’ve had over the last 27 years: We want to offer to you our special brand of intimate Largo content showcasing amazing performing artists of all kinds bringing their light into our lives. In doing so we also commit to their financial support as well as that of our small crew and giving back to local and national organizations in need. Proceeds from the Live From Largo series will support Los Angeles non-profits including efforts for voting, hunger and homelessness, like #whenweallvote #lafoodbank #foodonfoot and others.

They haven’t announced the line-up of performers, but knowing that Largo has a storied history of being a place where the likes of Zach Galifianakis, Fiona Apple, Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt, Jon Brion, and more perform, we have no doubt that they’ve got some of their favorites that are very likely some of your favorites line-up for this Live at Largo series.

“Tickets” for this start at $60 for four shows and you can get in on Live at Largo here.

Conan Will Start Taping Episodes at Largo at the Coronet Theatre (Though with No Audience and Remote Guests)

July 2, 2020
News

It has been months since late night hosts have taped an episode of their show from an actual stage. Kimmel, Colbert, and Meyers have done their best to gussy up their homes and Samantha Bee has just been doing her show from the woods. John Oliver is utilizing a giant blank white wall in his home and Hasan Minhaj has been going entirely with a virtual background, which isn’t too far from an actual episode of Patriot Act.

However, Conan O’Brien is going to break new ground yet again (he was pretty on the ball about doing bits while sheltered at home during the start of quarantine) as he will begin taping episodes of Conan for TBS from the long standing, revered comedy and music venue, Largo at the Coronet Theatre. They’ll be maintaining all safety protocol along government and industry regulations along with not having a live audience and bringing in guests for interviews remotely over Zoom. Limited crew and staff will be present.

This is a very noteworthy move as Conan will not only be back on stage once again to do Conan, but this will undoubtedly keep Largo’s doors open since they’ve had to go dark this entire time during lockdown with no idea (especially with the re-closing of dine-in restaurants in LA county) of when they would get to reopen and do so safely.

Also, in addition to Conan taping at Largo, the monthly Team Coco show, Moses Storm & Friends will do a Twitch live-stream at The Coronet as well starting July 9th. Again, there will be no audience present, but you will get to see live comedy from one of the most rustic looking auditorium in all of Los Angeles.

We don’t really think we need to do much convincing here.

After all, it is a live reading of cult classic Plan 9 From Outer Space presented by Dana Gould that features David Koechner, Jonah Ray, Paul F. Tompkins, Bobcat Goldthwait, Janet Varney, puppets by the talented Pam Severns, and so much more at Largo.

You’ve probably read all of that on the flyer, but, in case you needed it, we wanted the repetition to sink in the notion how awesome this night will be.

Tickets are still available at $30 a pop here.
